HVL honors Veterans throughout the year. The flag memorial across from the Community Center is a beautiful and constant reminder of their contribution. Rumor has it that everyone survived the Annual Haunted Hayride and no one ran away scared and screaming! To quote a friend of mine, “It was a Spooktacular Success!” This event has grown in popularity each year. This year, the event included eleven trailers and drivers, over twenty decorated houses on the route, and seven nonprofit vendors who sold food and provided activities and games for people as they waited for their turns on the hayride. Even though the weather tried to complicate the evening, Over one thousand people enjoyed this year’s hayride experience! A contest was held for the best-decorated house. The winners chosen by the community were the Davis family, first place; the Paolello family, second place; the Egan Family, third place. Christy and Todd Milders are November’s Garden Club Yard-of-the-Month winners. Every year in early November the gate is opened to lower the lake so that maintenance can be performed on docks and the shoreline. Even though the sluice gate is open, boats have been put in storage for the winter, and the colorful trees have finally lost their leaves, the Civic Club is planning several activities for the winter months. The tree lighting around the gazebo will be on Dec. 2 at 4:30 P.M. And to start the New Year out right, that invigorating Polar Plunge at the Beach will be on Jan. 1 from 11:30 A.M. to 1 P.M. Several awesome volunteers are needed to put on this huge event, and all of the help was greatly appreciated. The weather was a bit chilly but sunny. All who came enjoyed the music, food, and some German beer! Congratulations to the recently wed couples Heather McWethy and Luke Spade, and Emily Vonderheide and Cody Vaught. Best Wishes for a long, happily married life! My son Mark Zimmer recently celebrated his fortieth birthday with family. We watched the Bengals game and enjoyed food, cake, and ice cream. Condolences to the family of Andy Hornbach who recently passed on to his heavenly home – I’m sure he is frying up some chicken for his heavenly family to enjoy! Happy Thanksgiving to all. The staff greatly appreciates the firefighters donating their time to educate students. Learning about fire safety is not only educational but also fun as children have the opportunity to sit in the fire trucks, help spray hoses, and honk the truck horn. A special thank you to Skip Stutz for coordinating this year’s fire safety day with Sally Bertram, academy director. Steve and Candy Feller of Guilford and Frank and Raelene Niehoff of Bright celebrated their anniversaries in Hawaii, where they spent ten beautiful days in Kona and Oahu. The Fellers celebrated fifty years of marriage and renewed their wedding vows during their recent trip to Hawaii. They were married at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Negangard’s Corner on Dec. 23, 1973, the same church where Mrs. Feller’s parents, Gordon and Vivian (Hillman) Burcham, were married.
