Page 6B THE BEACON December 2023 AURORA By Randy Turner Community Correspondent aurora@goBEACONnews.com Hello Beacon readers, This has been a fast month with a lot of activity, and I do not see things slowing down. First I must report on the Aurora Farmers Fair- early reports are that this was a good one. I did my part and did a take-home of the famous Italian sausages with peppers and onions. Of course, an elephant ear was included. These are my wife’s favorites, and she was happy with both. I got my favorite- fried bologna from the Aurora First Presbyterian Church. Phee Ellinghausen has served me many of these over the years. The carnies bring a lot of temptations, but I prefer the home cooking of parks dearborn county O ur local food booths. The elephant ears were served by Brewer and Clement Concessions this year. They were originally the product of Eagle Concessions, but the owner Art Carroll passed away after last year’s Fair. Art’s were the best! A new “Mouse Game” was on the street, featuring numbers, not the colors previously used. It got a lot of attention, and I’m sure they will be back. Grand Marshalls, “Harley of Cochran” were very highly received. The Lions’ tee shirts that featured them, sold out in all sizes, with only a few small and 3xl leftover. Harley of Cochran did very well on their raffle booth as well. Their parade float featured a Harley on it, with guest Frank Linkmeyer on the bike. Frank and his brother Bob were longtime parade participants. Brother Bob Linkmeyer is no longer with us, so this was a very classy the Dearborn County Parks Foundation. A Gift For all Seasons! www.dearborncountyPARKS.com Communities move by Harley of Cochran to include Frank. As we said, they are always thinking of others. THANKS to a great bunch of guys! The only bad event of the parade was actually on George Street as people were leaving the parade area, trying to get on US 50. Someone pulling a trailer was sitting on the railroad tracks as a train was coming. People in all directions were screaming for them to get off the tracks, and the crossing arm came down on their trailer. As they pulled off the tracks, the arm slapped against the train engine, breaking and flying into the air- it was that close. The train rolled to a stop, and thankfully no one was injured. The Lions extend a “ROARING THANK YOU” to all attending the Fair, even on the one rainy night, the sponsors who make it possible, and the important part of clean up. Hitting on the subject of trains, longtime Aurora resident Jim Sedler said that he likes to watch the trains and noticed that we see mostly eastbound trains. He had a theory- he thinks the loaded trains are eastbound, and once Grand Marshals Harley of Cochran on a float in the Farmers Fair Parade. I need to pass CONGRATS to Jim Jung and his teammates on the 1972 Lawrenceburg Football team for their recent recognition by the Lawrenceburg High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Having played against them and also seeing many other Tiger teams, I still think this was Coach Meador’s best group. A welldeserved honor, playing in a time with no class tournaments and very little media attention. The Aurora High School Museum opened at its new location, 320 Second Street. They have more viewing space, stop in and take a look! What will happen? Nov. 17 will be another “Get Wined and Dined Night” in Aurora, from 5-9 P.M. Main Street Aurora will also be promoting “Small Business Saturday” shopping for the holiday season. Be the first to get your SWAG bags, as they are loading them with goodies, and downtown business holiday coupons. Only fifty bags will be handed out that night. Another fifty will be handed out on Nov. 25 to coincide with fourteen ribbon cuttings at new businesses. So do not miss out! Next Beacon Ad Deadline Nov. 27 Scott Petty introducing the KISS tribute band. The “AURORA PRE-TUR- KEY 5K WALK/RUN” will happen on Nov. 22 at 5:30 P.M. Gabbard Park will be the hub of activities. St. Mary, St. Lawrence, and St. Teresa are holding these benefits to aid St. Vincent De Paul / Clearing House / Lawrenceburg Food Pantry / Dillsboro Food Pantry. A second run is scheduled for Nov. 23 at 9 A.M., at the St. Leon Legion. Second Helping Awards with a 20% discount for participating in both races! And of course “MIRACLE ON MAIN STREET” will kick off on Nov. 26 at 6 P.M. at the Aurora Christmas Tree Lighting. Each weekend in December will feature events at the Aurora Lions Club. David and Judy Hizer said that good Christmas Elves are needed to help put things in order. They start putting their “Dickens Village” display together on Nov. 18, and all help is welcomed. On weekends from Dec. 2 through Sunday, Dec. 17, Christmas events are scheduled for the kids. “Breakfast With Santa” on Saturday mornings at 9 A.M. and 11 A.M. Reservations are needed, by calling 812-926-1100. Open Santa visits are from 1 P.M. to 4 P.M. each Saturday and Sunday. Keep watch for the other events that will happen. That’s all I have for now. One sunny day this past month, without warning, I found myself in the unfortunate circumstance of having to be in three places all at once at exactly 4 P.M. Thank goodness for cell phones to delegate responsibilities and the ability to multi-task! I mention this because I am constantly amazed at how often this happens. I am sure we all have a long list of fall fun that we have had the joy to participate in and an equally long list of the fun we missed. (Yes, I am still sore about that pumpkin festival I missed!) Pioneer Days, an interactive kid-friendly display of all things “pioneer”, was a huge success. Organized by the Dearborn County Historical Society, one could learn about honey bees, roping a cow, teepees, quilting, and other musical entertainment. Abe Lincoln came to visit, reciting the Gettysburg Address and the pre-inaugural speech given in Lawrenceburg on Feb. 12, 1861. Funny how his words still ring true today. Lawrenceburg Main Street was a scurry of activity for the haunted wine walk. Wine and ghost stories? Why not? With winter quickly approaching, let’s not forget that the ice rink will be open starting Nov. 18 through Jan. 14. Need a job?
