Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe 

even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining 

establishments. Well we’re shifting into the holiday shopping 

season and it’s only fitting that this column follows suit. 

We’ll give you the skinny on the clothes we try on, the candles 

we smell, the snacks we sample, who we bumped into and, you know, 

the general lay of the land PLUS where to find the best gifts this season. 

The place: The Days Sustainable Apparel on Washington Street 

right next to Shore Soaps in Cape May. This shop offers pieces all 

crafted from upcycled materials and plant-based textiles. They’ve also 

ventured into partnerships with places like the Boarding House and 

Out There Coffee to create products from old linens, pillow cases and 

coffee bags. There’s plenty of cool items to check out here. 

The owners: Alexa D’Amico and husband Shaun Guglielmi opened 

the Days Sustainable Apparel in 2022. They chose Cape May as their 

first store’s location thanks to its history, art, culture, and early childhood 

vacations Alexa took with her family. Alexa studied at the Fashion 

Institute and developed a brand that’s focused on ethical practices from 

sourcing their products to the treatment of employees. It’s not all about 

running a business but making a difference through educating buyers. 

She and Shaun aim to combat the detrimental impacts fast fashion has 

on the environment and create a well-rounded shopping experience. 

The clothes: Many of the products they carry are made from upcycled 

materials including beach towels. They have a range of terrycloth 

items like hats, bags, clutches and for this holidays season, stockings 

to hang on the chimney with care! You’ll also want to check out tees 

made from hemp — very comfortable and lightweight. The Days also 

has a few dresses made from hemp that can be casual or dressed up for 

a night out. Maybe with an upcycled skateboard deck necklace? They’re 

hand cut and finished in Pennsylvania, designed in New Jersey. 

The takeaway: The Days Sustainable Apparel is open Wednesday- 

Sunday from 10am-6pm. If you can’t make it over during open hours, 

shop online at thedaysapparel.com and they’ll ship your order to you. 

This is a great place to pick up some presents for the environmentalist 

in your life, the fashionista who practices sustainability, or someone 

you want to pick up a cute and fun outfit for and feel good about who 

you’re shopping with.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

It’s called a “Hawk Watch” platform, but 

that elevated wooden structure is much 

more. Those in attendance are equal 

opportunity observers. Anything with 

feathers and a few things without are 

grist for our mill. Snapping turtles, Southern 

Gray Tree Frogs, Green Darner dragonflies. If 

it’s within binocular range, it has our interest. 

Take today, bluebird conditions and SSW 

winds, hardly hawk watching conditions. 

But there is always something to appreciate. 

Today it was scores of Tree Swallows cutting 

cookie-cutter patterns over the platform. 

There were Monarch butterflies, White Ibis, 

and a White crowned Sparrow. 

Hawks, yes, a few. Lots of Cooper’s 

Hawks, a few harriers, Red-tailed and Redshouldered 

Hawks and a late Osprey and 

later Broad-winged Hawk. The showstopper 

was the multiple flocks or “kettles,” of Turkey 

Vultures, swirling in thermals, rising aloft. 

Not necessarily attractive up close, but at a 

distance, vultures are the picture of grace and 

aerial finesse. “It’s like Zen,” one newcomer to 

the hawk watch assessed. And it is. The flight 

of vultures is mesmerizing, soothing. The 

opposite of haste and hurry. 

From now until early December, vultures 

can be counted upon to enliven the skies. 

In their wheeling ranks, you will find burley 

Red-tailed Hawks, elegant Red-shouldereds 

and the odd eagle or two, all drawn to the rising 

bubble of air the vultures seek. 

Vultures are bellwethers. You find vul- 

tures, you find hawks. Out on Bunker Pond, 

the ranks of migrating ducks are filling nicely. 

Gadwall, in their tasteful gray attire, tends 

to hug the northern shore. Elegant Pintails 

cluster mid-pond, Green-winged Teal hug 

the shores. Wigeon and Mallards space 

themselves out. While most observers gush 

about the colors of waterfowl, the mix of duck 

sounds is equally gratifying. 

Mallards quack. Gadwall’s quack is muffled. 

Teal squeal. Shovelers snort and wigeon 

whistle, a comical two-note toot. Eurasian 

Wigeon emits a held single note. Canada 

Geese? Well, you guess. The great thing about 

November are the numbers of real live wild 

Canada’s that come to town. Arriving in classic 

echelon formation the birds breast the 

water with a whoop and a whoosh. 

I love the spectacle of November migrants. 

Bring binoculars and dress warmly. A northeast 

wind is best. Migrating seabirds like a tail 

wind. For daily, real-time count numbers go 

to njaudubon.org and click on “Watches.” It’s 

the next best thing to being there.

Many of our holiday activities are 

dictated by tradition, but, “tradition” 

is always in flux — look 

at the ruckus that ensued when 

Queen Victoria embraced the foreign 

custom of the Christmas tree. 

Queen Victoria could not help bucking 

tradition from the beginning of her reign — 

the marked contrast between her and her predecessors 

startled the London establishment. 

She was a young woman assuming a role 

usually played by old men. Victoria was also 

the first monarch crowned after the Reform 

Act of 1832, designed to amplify the role of the 

average (male) citizen in government. Private 

coronations, witnessed only by Parliament 

and the nobility, were a thing of the past. For 

the first time, the public was invited to view 

the procession of the new ruler, and reportedly 

due to a lack of planning, many things 

went awry. Lord Rolle fell down the stairs, the 

music was mediocre, and the coronation ring 

was too small. Her subjects did not seem to 

mind. Thanks to the new railroads bringing 

in tourists from outside of London, 400,000 

came to celebrate. The weather was lovely, the 

fireworks were a hit, and the four-day fair in 

Hyde Park gave a boost to the local economy. 

Victoria’s new Christmas traditions were similarly 

popular. When she and her German husband, 

Albert, brought them to Buckingham 

Palace, religious conservatives objected, but 

when an 1848 image in the “Illustrated London 

News” showed the royal family around their 

Christmas tree, her subjects were charmed, 

and the new tradition took hold. Victoria’s 

reign also saw the reduction in postage from 

one penny in 1840 to a half-penny in 1870, 

which helped to popularize the sending of 

Christmas cards, a tradition which is fading in 

favor of digital holiday messages. 

Your traditions may also be in flux, so you’ll 

need some flexibility planning your Cape May 

holiday. Maybe you love the entire West Cape 

May Christmas parade, but the visiting fiveyear-old 

only wants to stay for 45 minutes.

change that tradition to a play like “A Tuna 

Christmas” at Cape May Stage November 

15-December 30 (capemaystage.org) or East 

Lynne Theater Company’s revue, “Lennie’s 

Christmas Extravaganza,” December 7, 8 and 

9. Let older kids skip “Santa’s Trolley Ride” 

with mom and dad in favor of the “Ghosts of 

Christmas Past” on their own — a little independence 

is a great gift.

A man from my gym asked me out and I 

agreed. Then he texts me with the following 

proposition: “I bought us tickets to the late 

show at the Borgata. I made reservations at 

Peter Shield’s Inn (PSI) for 8pm. That will 

give us plenty of time to get to Atlantic City 

and we can stay at my sister’s after.” I said no. 

I told him that is not appropriate for a first 

date, especially the overnight arrangements. I 

barely know him. I said, “Let’s just stick with 

dinner or an afternoon at Cape May Winery.” 

I’ve heard nothing since. Did I do something 

wrong? — Confused 

Dear Confused 

Of course you did nothing wrong. It sounds 

like “Jim” already had you in a relationship in 

his head. There’s no cure for the fact that you 

broke his bubble of reality. The best thing to do 

is to pretend he never asked you out when you 

do run into him again. Be pleasant but don’t 

offer any alternative get togethers. People 

with those kinds of unrealistic expectations 

are best left to their own devices.

came to the shelter when his owner could no 

longer care for him. He is a happy pup who 

loves attention. Zeke is learning proper leash 

manners and enjoys his brisk walks. He also 

loves car rides and is crate trained. Zeke would 

make a wonderful companion for a family 

with older children. 

BISQUICK is an eight-year-old girl who came 

to the shelter as a stray. She is quickly becoming 

a favorite of volunteers and staff. Bisquick 

is an energetic, social girl who loves to play in 

the baby pool. Her leash skills are good and 

she enjoys a walk with new smells and sights. 

This sweet girl would do well in a home with 

older children. 

COOPER is an energetic boy who loves to 

splash around in the pool. He has excellent 

leash skills and is a people-pleaser. Cooper 

lived with children previously, but needs to 

be the only pet in his new home. He is cratetrained 

which will help with his transition. He 

is also up to date on all vaccinations, neutered 

and housetrained.

to allow him to roam as he pleases. Other cats, 

dogs and children would be fine, too!
