Cut squash into 8 large pieces. Place cut side<br />
up in a 15x10x1” baking pan. Cut 1/4” off tops<br />
of onions and garlic bulbs. Place cut side up in<br />
baking pan. Brush with oil; sprinkle with thyme.<br />
Cover tightly and bake at 350° for 1 1/2 - 2<br />
hours or until vegetables are very tender. Uncover<br />
and let stand until lukewarm. Remove peel from<br />
squash and onions; remove soft garlic from skins.<br />
Combine vegetables, broth and cream in small<br />
batches in a blender or food processor until<br />
smooth. Transfer to large saucepan. Add parsley,<br />
salt & pepper. Heat through (do not boil). Garnish<br />
with thyme or pumpkin seeds if desired.<br />

In the days when ice cream sundae cost much less, a<br />
10-year old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a<br />
table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. “How<br />
much is an ice cream sundae?”<br />
“Fifty cents,” replied the waitress.<br />
The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and<br />
studied a number of coins in it. “How much is a dish of plain<br />
ice cream?” he inquired.<br />
Some people were now waiting for a table and the<br />
waitress was a bit impatient. “Thirty-five cents,” she said<br />
brusquely.<br />
The little boy again counted the coins. “I’ll have the<br />
plain ice cream,” he said.<br />
The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the<br />
table, and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream,<br />
paid the cashier and departed. When the waitress came<br />
back, she began wiping down the table then swallowed hard<br />
at what she saw. There, placed neatly beside the empty<br />
dish, were two nickels and five pennies—her tip.<br />

1 cup shortening<br />
1 cup light brown sugar<br />
3 eggs, well beaten<br />
1 1\2 cups molasses<br />
6 cups bread flour<br />
1 1\2 tablespoons ground ginger<br />
2 1\4 teaspoons salt<br />
1 1\2 teaspoons baking soda<br />
1 teaspoon cinnamon<br />
Cream shortening and add sugar, eggs, and<br />
molasses. Sift dry ingredients and add them<br />
to the first mixture. Chill and roll out, not<br />
too thinly. Cut into shapes for hanging.<br />
Bake at 350 degrees until dry but not crisp,<br />
about 15 minutes. Add a frosting if desired.<br />

3/4 cup oil<br />

3/4 ounce of lemon extract<br />
(maybe more)<br />
5 cups of flour<br />
3 teaspoons baking powder<br />
1 cup of orange juice (no pulp)<br />
Using a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, mix together the oil and sugar, then add eggs and then<br />
the lemon extract and orange juice. Add baking powder and when that is mixed in add flour. The dough will<br />
be very sticky. After it is all mixed, let it stand in the refrigerator for about an hour. This will make handling<br />
the dough much easier. (Usually while one batch is in the fridge now is a good time to make a 2nd batch).<br />
Roll out the dough into balls about the size of golf balls. Bake on non-stick cookie sheets or grease<br />
regular cookie sheets with a non-sticking baking spray like PAM. Bake in a preheated oven at 350* for<br />
about 10-12 mins (baking times will vary based on ovens). The cookies will start to crack open on the tops<br />
when they are done and they will brown on the bottom. They will not brown on the top so be careful not to<br />
overcook them. Place on a wire rack to cool.<br />
Make a frosting of confectionery sugar and lemon extract and just enough milk for the right consistency<br />
for the glaze. Sprinkle with non parels or a half slice of maraschino cherries.<br />

INGREDIENTS<br />
3 Cranberries (for garnish)<br />
1/2 Tablespoon White Granulated Sugar (for garnish)<br />
1 1/2 Ounces Citrus Vodka<br />
1/2 Ounce Elderflower Liqueur<br />
1 Ounce White Cranberry Juice<br />
1/4 Ounce freshly squeezed Lemon Juice<br />
DIRECTIONS<br />
Skewer 3 cranberries and dust them with sugar. Gently tap off<br />
any excess sugar and set aside.<br />
In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, pour the citrus vodka,<br />
elderflower liqueur, and white cranberry and lemon juices.<br />
Shake well.<br />
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with the cranberry<br />
skewer.<br />

Mmmmm! Tender flaky cookie-buns crammed with cranberries, raisins,<br />
honey, nuts... bake ‘m easy with Fleischmann’s Yeast and this new nokneading<br />
no-rising refrigerator recipe! Great for Christmas giving!<br />
Scald 1 cup milk: cool to lukewarm. In large<br />
bowl combine 4 cups unsifted flour, 1/4<br />
cup sugar. 1 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon<br />
grated lemon peel. Cut in 1 cup (2 sticks)<br />
Fleischmann’s Margarine until like coarse meal.<br />
Dissolve 1 package Fleischmann’s Active Dry<br />
Yeast in 1/2 cup warm water (105 O -115 O F.).<br />
To flour mixture add yeast, lukewarm milk and<br />
two beaten eggs. Combine lightly.<br />
Cover dough tightly: refrigerate for at least<br />
2 hours (or up to 2 days). When ready to<br />
bake your Christmas Canes, prepare the<br />
filling. Combine 1-1/2 cups finely chopped<br />
cranberries,1/2 cup sugar, ccp raisins, 1/2 cup<br />
chopped Planters Pecans, ‘5 cup honey and<br />
1-1/2 teaspoons grated orange peel in a pan.<br />
Cook over medium heat: bring to a boil and<br />
cook for about 5 minutes. Cool.<br />

Divide dough in half. On a floured board, roll<br />
out half of the dough into 18”x15” rectangle.<br />
Spread one half of the filling on dough. Fold<br />
dough into a three-layer strip 15 inches long.<br />
Cut dough into 15 strips. Hold ends of each<br />
strip and twist lightly in opposite directions.<br />
Pinch ends to seal. Place on greased baking<br />
sheets. Shape top of each strip to form a cane.<br />
Repeat with remaining half of dough and filling.<br />
Bake in a hot oven (400 O F.) 10-15 minutes or<br />
until done. Cool on<br />
wire racks. Before<br />
serving, frost with<br />

‘Tis the Season<br />
Getting through the holidays, both mentally and physically, can be a very<br />
stressful endeavor. The greatest gift, that not only affects you but others<br />
as well, involves either starting a workout program or keeping the<br />
commitments to your current workouts.<br />
Working out regularly helps maintain the energy level required for all the<br />
hustle and bustle of the season. It also keeps your metabolism<br />
revving to help burn off those celebration calories.<br />
Discovering that discipline not deprivation is the key to<br />
comfortably enjoying the holidays and is the building block<br />
for success throughout the year.<br />
Healthy, helpful hints for holiday survival:<br />
• If the holidays have you time deprived and you<br />
cannot get to the gym…<br />
• Throw on your hat and mittens and go for a brisk walk.<br />
• The lower body is the biggest calorie-burning muscle group,<br />
so do exercises at home that involve it. (ex. squats and lunges)<br />
• Try to designate your day of indulgence and eat healthy on<br />
the days leading to and then following your “special day.”<br />
• Drink lots of water, especially if you are consuming beverages<br />
containing alcohol.<br />
• Organize a buddy system for your walks. It helps to<br />
keep you in check.<br />
• A little taste of this and that is much better than a lot of this<br />
and that. Stop eating just before you start feeling full.<br />
• Moving away from the table is helpful to remove the<br />
temptation of continuous snacking.<br />
• Keep this phrase in mind: “Moderation and movement<br />
will help you to maintain.”<br />
WINTER DRIVING TIPS:<br />
1. Drive slowly - Adjust your speed<br />
down to account for lower traction<br />
2. Increase your following distance -<br />
This increased margin of safety<br />
will provide the longer distance<br />
