Principal says social
media ‘can be positive’
• By Sasha Watson
IAIN MURRAY may be the
new kid on the block at Hornby
High School, but he can already
see the effects of social media on
his students.
In October, a Hornby youth
survey was passed out at the
school and more than 300 students
answered questions about
social media, youth offending
and mental health.
Said Murray: “What we have
noticed is that youth these days
are used to the instant gratification
that comes with social
media.
“Their brains are conditioned
to ‘want it now’, and they are
less willing to work hard for
what they want because it is
right there on the screen in an
instant.”
Murray said while using social
media can be positive during
school time, it was about “finding
a balance” between social
media and focusing on learning.
“We have also seen that with
the presence of social media,
the ability to concentrate for
more than 10 to 15 minutes has
significantly diminished.”
Murray was appointed by the
school’s boards of trustees as
principal in April at the beginning
of term two, and is striving
to push students to better their
attendance, sociability and education
outcomes.
He hails from Westland High
School in Hokitika, where he
was the principal for four-and-ahalf
years.
About the move to Hornby,
Murray said: “I love it so far – it
is very similar to working at my
prior school, with similar values
and good people. I love watching
and growing both teachers and
students. I also fit into management
positions well.
“Students are students wherever
you go – you gotta love
them. The community is supportive,
which is heartwarming,
and they want what is best for
the students. We do too.”
He has 10 years of experience
in leadership throughout Canterbury
schools, having been
principal at both Cheviot Area
School and Emmanuel Christian
School.
Murray also worked in
Thailand for a year as executive
principal for Silver Fern International
School.
His position at Hornby follows
the departure of Robin Sutton,
who had been principal for
about seven years.
Said Murray: “I’m planning
to stay a while. I look forward to
seeing the students become successful
in whatever success looks
like for them, whether it be academically,
socially or sporty.
“The goal is to really lift
education in a way that gives
students different pathways
to go through. Another of my
immediate focuses is to boost
regular attendance at school as
studies show a direct correlation
between student achievement
and attendance rates.
“In the simplest of terms, if
you attend school, you learn.”
A PRINCIPAL’S PRINCIPLE: Murray is focused on
boosting attendance, lifting education and providing
students with a range of different opportunities.
Meeting
to form
new patrol
committee
A NEW committee will be
formed following Halswell Ward
city councillor Andrei Moore’s
request for more community
patrol volunteers.
Moore said the committee
will be founded at a community
meeting on Wednesday,
November 29 from 7pm at Te
Hapua Halswell Centre.
The Waipuna-Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board
had identified the need for more
support in the area earlier this
year, and to get an allocation of
Better Off funding, the board
requested expressions of interest
to be sent to Moore.
Said Moore: “We are on the
right track to getting enough
people to form an effective
committee but would definitely
benefit from more.
“Anyone interested in being
part of it is invited to come along
to the meeting.”
Community patrols are organised
and operated by their local
communities and volunteers,
and work closely with police and
other agencies to assist in building
safer communities.
New patrol volunteers are
provided with full training and
are asked to contribute four
hours per month at a time that
suits.
• Expressions of interest
can be sent to Andrei.
From near-$1m price bump to $10k
loss: Cone home feels resale pain
• By Nikki Preston
A CLEVERLY renovated midcentury
cone-shaped home that
was given an award-winning
makeover to bring it into the 21st
century has sold for the second
time in just over a year, but for
slightly less.
The 1970s home at Westburn
Tce, Ilam, sold for $1.3 million
– $10,000 less than the previous
owners picked it up for at auction
in September last year.
The property was put back
on the market at the end of
September due to a change in
circumstances.
The three-bedroom, two-bathroom
home passed in at auction
in mid-October but sold a few
weeks later at a fixed price.
Harcourts Gold listing agent
Cameron Bailey, who marketed
the home for the second time
with Charlie Horncastle, said
it was a good price and showed
that good properties in good
locations still hold their value.
Bailey, who had earlier
described it as an “uber cool”
home, said a mix of buyers had
been looking at the property including
families, executives and
downsizers. He could not reveal
who the new owners were.
The property underwent a
sympathetic 14-month renovation
by the previous owner,
Angelique Armstrong, a wellknown
Christchurch interior
designer.
Armstrong picked up the
home for $461,000 in 2017 for
herself, and her hard work
scored the home an award for
the best renovation project in
the 2021 TIDA NZ Renovation
of the Year Awards as well as a
near-$1m price bump when she
sold last year.
It comes as family homes in
Ilam continue to net surprising
prices at auction.
A three-bedroom, onebathroom
home on an
impressive 1315sq m section, also
on Westburn Tce, sold under
the hammer for $1.46m earlier
this month with five people
competing for it.
Bailey, who sold the home with
colleague Catherine Aitken,
said the recently renovated home
on a large section was bought by
a family.
CONE: The Ilam home was renovated by interior
designer Angelique Armstrong.
“It’s just one of those areas
where you are getting great value
for money. You are getting a
location that is still really close
to town, it’s got some cool houses
in there – there’s a mixture of
character houses and some midcentury
houses.”
Harcourts Grenadier listing
agent Andrew Steel also sold a
four-bedroom, two-bathroom
brick home in Ilam that netted
the owners $252,000 more than
they had expected.
The Coniston Ave home
attracted plenty of attention as
soon as it hit the market and
within days the owners accepted
an offer of $950,000, bringing the
auction forward. There were six
bidders in the auction room last
week and the property eventually
sold under the hammer for
$1.202m.
Steel earlier told OneRoof
well-presented properties in
good areas tended to always be
in demand and that people
liked Ilam because it was close to
the university. – NZ Herald
Farewells and
for 2024
Tēnā koutou katoa, warm greetings to you all
The school year is rapidly coming to an end, senior students
are on examination leave and NCEA well underway, we have
completed our 2023 senior prizegiving and on Friday the 8th
of December finish the year celebrating the Year 7 to 10 final
prize giving assembly.
Our students and staff have shown huge resilience over
the past three years under some difficult and challenging
conditions, lockdowns, NCEA date changes which continue,
rostering home of students and so forth, so well done to our
staff and students.
Enrolments for 2023 are again increasing with students
enrolling from both contributing schools, other regions and
overseas, as a result the expected roll for 2024 is expected to
be in excess of 900 students at our Kura. We are working
with the Ministry of Education to urgently address the issues
of space to cater for the rapidly increasing roll.
At the final senior assembly of 2023 we said farewell to our
year 13 cohort. Our seniors will all be missed as they head
into the wonder world and the exciting challenge ahead for
them. All students who have passed through Hornby High
School are part of our wonderful whānau and are welcome
to come back to visit any time. We also thanked our Head
Rotary club
supports
mobile eye
testing unit
• By Sasha Watson
THE ROTARY Club of
Hornby has donated $4000
towards a mobile eye testing unit
for the South Island.
The total cost of the mobile eye
unit project, which was launched
by Rotary District 9999 with
Blind Low Vision NZ, sits at the
$400,000 mark.
Said Rotary public image coordinator
for New Zealand and
the Pacific Liz Courtney: “The
mobile van will cost $180,000.
“Then it will need to be customised
to fit in the specialist equipment,
which will cost another
$200,000.”
Said Blind Low Vision chief
executive John Mulka: “Early
detection and screening are key
to prevent vision loss, so the aim
is to have the mobile unit on the
road by mid-2024 to offer rural
communities free eye health
checks and raise awareness of the
importance of eye care.”
To date, rotary clubs have raised
$50,0000.
to first go to New York for the
Youth Grand Prix ballet finals
and, in July, Tamison would
like to go to a summer school in
Winnipeg on a scholarship she
was offered last year.
“Then, we will come home for
a bit before leaving to go to each
of the schools in Europe.”
Tamison, a Convergence
Dance Studios student, was also
offered a fourth scholarship to
the Australian Ballet School in
Melbourne, which Soppet said
was “not being ruled out”.
To help fund the trip, a
Givealittle page called ‘Ballet
Beyond Boundaries: Supporting
Tamison’s Dance Destiny’ was
set up last week, with a goal
of $25,000.
“Every contribution, no
matter the size, would get her
closer to her dreams,” said
Soppet.
The decision comes after
Tamison was recruited at the
Youth America Grand Prix
ballet competition, held in
Sydney in September, after
competing against more than
200 dancers aged 12-14.
Tamison was called back for
further judging after three days
of performing and attending
both classical and contemporary
masterclasses, where the junior
grand prix title was officially
awarded to her by consensus of
a four-judge panel.
Said Soppet: “Though
winning competitions is
amazing, making people
feel something through her
dancing is the real triumph and
something Tamison strives for.”
DREAM BIG: Tamison Soppet will head to the Royal Ballet
School in London, John Cranko Ballet in Germany, and
Princess Grace Dance Academy in Monaco on scholarships
of up to four weeks. PHOTO: INSPIRED DANCE IMAGES
Start a new
Christmas tradition
What could be better than starting some new family traditions this year? Christmas traditions are memories
in the making and help spread a little festive cheer whether with your loved ones or out in the community.
10 great ideas to help make Christmas a magical time of the year
1. Create a Christmas playlist with some of
your favourite carols and songs – play it
loud and every day, if that’s your thing.
Or plan a pre-Christmas sing-along
evening – don’t forget to supply the song
sheet so everyone can join in too.
2. Get into the spirit of Christmas by getting
together with family or friends to help
decorate each other’s houses – turn up
the music, drink the wine and go all out
to deck the halls.
3. Make and send homemade Christmas
cards – there’s nothing more exciting
than getting mail, right? Or how about
writing some generic ones and dropping
them into your nearest retirement
home to brighten up an elderly person’s
Christmas.
4. Buy your family Christmas tee-shirts or
Santa hats to wear on the day and don’t
forget to take a family selfie.
5. Fill a shoebox with gifts for a child, wrap
it with a bow, and deliver to the nearest
community gift tree – check with your
local library and label with age and
gender.
6. Have a yearly family, friends or neighbour
outdoor games night with drinks and
nibbles leading up to the big day – think
Pétanque, hoopla, mini golf, giant chess,
or croquet.
7. Take a leaf out of Iceland’s traditional
‘Jolabokaflod’ or Christmas Book Flood,
and give a book as a gift on Christmas
Eve each year – don’t forget to write
inside the cover who it’s from and the
date.
8. Make a list of must see Christmas movies
to watch a week before Christmas day
and tick off the ones you’ve watched.
Don’t forget the popcorn and hot
chocolate or nibbles and wine.
9. Make and give a handmade ornament
as a gift each year – the lucky receiver’s
Christmas tree will be covered with
beautiful, handmade memories.
10. Make homemade hot chocolate on
Christmas Eve or on Christmas morning
to drink while the presents are being
opened – decorate with whipped cream,
grated chocolate, marshmallows, or
crushed candy canes.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Christmas is a great time for passing down recipes that are tried and true becoming
traditional family favourites. The owner of this recipe says her mum used to make
the pudding on Christmas Eve and would take the bowl and wooden spoon around
everyone in the house to stir the mixture and make a wish.
Make a Wish Christmas Pudding
You will need:
• 1 ½ tbsp butter
• 1 ½ tsp baking soda
• 1 ½ cups of boiling water
• 1 ½ cups flour
• 1 ½ cups mixed fruit or sultanas
• ¾ cup sugar
Method:
1. In a glass or stainless steel bowl,
melt the butter (over hot water)
and dissolve the baking soda.
2. Add the boiling water and
sugar.
3. When cool, add flour and
mixed fruit.
4. Stir all the ingredients together
and make a Christmas wish.
5. Cover bowl with a tea towel and
allow to stand overnight.
The next day:
• Place mixture into a greased
bowl or ice-cream container,
cover with tinfoil and place in a
pot of water, just deep enough
so the bowl doesn’t float.
• Boil pudding for four hours and
check regularly to make sure
the water has boiled dry. Top
up carefully with extra water if
required.
• Serve with heaps of Chantilly
cream!
Chantilly
Cream
You will need:
• 1 x bottle of cream
• ½ tsp vanilla essence
• 1 tbsp icing sugar to
sweeten
Method:
Put cream, vanilla essence
and icing sugar in a bowl and
whisk until light and fluffy with
softly formed peaks. Cover and
refrigerate until ready to serve.
‘Modest’ hybrid system leaves GX lacking
One of the first Japanese station
wagons sold in this country when
launched in 1966; fast forward
to 2023 and now the Corolla is
among the last.
Traditional body styles such
as wagons have been obliterated
here over the last decade, by
the seemingly never-ending
obsession Kiwi new-car buyers
have with SUVs, and these days
they are bombarded with choice.
For almost a year, the trimmed
down Corolla lineup sold here
including the wagon, were all
www.drivesouth.co.nz
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
powered by Toyota’s popular
hybrid-petrol electric power
train. The ‘go all hybrid’ is being
driven on two fronts; one is
buyer demand, with the other
being Toyota’s push to reduce
the carbon footprint of their new
vehicle sales in New Zealand.
There’s a likeable sophistication
about the styling of this hybrid
Corolla wagon with the lower
grille showcasing its extra width
and LED headlights that wrap
around and delicately blend
into the front guards. Only
one model, the $36,995
Japanese-built entry-level
GX being road tested
here, is available on our
market.
Recently it received a
useful and long overdue
power bump from
90kW to 103kW. It is
now smoother and more
refined than the hybrid
Incorporating
best motorbuys
system it replaces, but a fair
chunk of this goes out the door
under full throttle. The newfound
heft is most noticeable
in town driving, where the test
wagon coasted for longer periods
on flat terrain in EV mode only
at speeds of up to 50km/h.
Its star doesn’t shine so
brightly on the open road where
acceleration for overtaking
slower traffic is on the leisurely
side. Engaging the transmission’s
Sport mode puts a bit more
spring in its performance step in
these situations, but only does,
if you will excuse the pun, a
passable job. I could only wonder
how good this wagon would be
with the excellent 135kW 2.0-litre
petrol electric hybrid system
used in the Corolla Cross SUV.
People in the UK would know, as
it’s used in the high spec Corolla
touring wagon sold in that part
of the world.
The 1.8-litre hybrid system
used in the GX that’s the subject
of this review features in more
modestly equipped Corolla
wagons Toyota serves up to
the Brits. The 2.0-litre hybrid
offers a much larger dollop
Ratings out of 10: Performance 6; Handling 7; Build
Quality 7; Comfort 6; Passenger and Load Space 6; Styling
7; Value for money 7; Road test average consumption 5.6L
/100km; Safety – ANCAP not rated.
Overall points out of 10: 7
of performance, enabling it
to charge through the 0 to
100km/h dash in 7.5 seconds.
That’s about 3 seconds quicker
than the 1.8-litre hybrid. A CVT
automatic provides a consistently
seamless and pleasant – but far
from gear shifting – regime.
This is the largest Corolla
wagon so far, although a roofline
that slopes away steeply toward
the rear of the vehicle does
compromise load height. Like
the Corolla hatch, rear seat
space is tight, especially head
and leg room. Overall it isn’t
a commodious load hauler of
people or cargo. A refreshed
cabin features pleasant yet hard
wearing fabric seats, and smart
key entry with push button start.
Toyota’s excellent Safety Sense
technology package is standard
with impressive pedestrian and
cyclist detection capabilities.
Other noteworthy inclusions are
autonomous emergency braking,
all speed dynamic radar cruise
control, plus a bunch of other
safety tech you wouldn’t expect
to find in a small wagon in this
price bracket.
Handling is a vast
improvement on the Corolla
wagons that have come before.
Generally, the suspension
reacts quickly to sudden and
unexpected changes in direction
by the driver, or instigated
without warning by sub-standard
road surfaces.
Less engaging steering than
the Corolla hatch reflects the
fact that the wagon is tuned
for the Japanese market. Their
drivers prefer steering with a
softer, more comfortable feel,
rather than setups with sporty
aspirations and intent. While
both the handling and steering
of the wagon lack the crispness
of the hatch, it works fine in a
vehicle focused on practicality
and versatility.
Mission Without Borders
visit the Sechka’s house
with support to lift them
out of poverty.
Families in Ukraine
need your help!
The Sechka family live in a rural area
of Sarny region, western Ukraine, in
an old dilapidated house. Mykhailo,
40, and his wife Nadiya, 31, work hard to
provide for their family. They face a massive
challenge as three of their five children have
severe disabilities. One of their daughters
is unable to walk at all. The health of
their children means they need medical
examinations, check-ups, and treatment.
Which costs money.
Mykhailo used to work in forestry, but
when the war began, he lost most of his
wages then he had to quit. Since then, he
has focused on farming and keeps cows,
pigs, geese, and poultry to survive.
Son Mieko loves his parents and sees they
are hardworking. Mykhailo must cultivate
a lot of land to grow forage for the animals,
and vegetables and grain for the family. He
was using an old tractor that he bought 15
years ago. The tractor is 50 years old and
required constant repair. Mykhailo says that
after each working day he had to repair it
and it wasn’t worth the money. Since then,
the old tractor became a place where Mieko
and his siblings play.
Despite Mykhailo and Nadiya’s efforts,
the family’s situation became very difficult.
The loss of income, health issues and the
ongoing war has taken its toll.
Mieko’s family need help with resources,
such as tools and machinery, so they can
grow food for themselves.
Right now, the Ukrainian economy
is shrinking, and inflation is rising. So,
supporting families just like Mieko’s with a
self-sufficiency project will be a lifeline.
Mieko’s anxiety and uncertainty and have
resulted in physical and psychological
issues. There is no doubt that the impact
of war will be felt by his family and many
others for years to come.
Support MiSSion Without BorderS
At Mission Without Borders, we regularly reach
out to Kiwis who respond by giving, praying,
and offering their unwavering support.
If you would like to help, here are
some ways we can make a difference
together:
1. A gift of $30 will supply an emergency
food and hygiene parcel to help
displaced and vulnerable people in the
Ukraine.
2. Sponsor a family: we have families
in Ukraine waiting right now for
sponsorship. You can enable and
encourage a whole family to lift
themselves out of poverty and become
self-sufficient for $45 a month.
3. Consider donating towards a selfsufficiency
project for a family like
Mieko’s. This will give them the
opportunity to not only survive but
thrive ‒ $25 will provide a packet of
seeds to grow life-sustaining fruits
and vegetables.
