You’ll feel frustrated if life isn’t going at 100mph but there’s a reason

Group were proud to announce that 

since the formaon of our group we 

have raised £20,191.61 for Weston 

Park Cancer Charity. 

On Saturday 2 nd of December, we held 

our annual Christmas Coffee Morning 

to raise funds for Weston Park Cancer 

Charity.and thanks to our wonderful 

supporters we are delighted to say we 

raised £1,000 and counng. 

Thank you to all those who supported 

us as always by baking cakes, coming 

along for a coffee and cake, buying 

raffle ckets, purchasing the gis and 

cras we had on sale and for making 

donaons. 

We would like to thank Killamarsh 

Methodist Church for hosng our 

event and for pung on their cra stall

International Hug Day - January 21 st 

Hugging, a simple act of physical touch, is more than just 

a comforng gesture. It plays a significant role in our 

psychological and physical health. 

Hugging releases oxytocin, known as the "love 

hormone," which enhances social bonding, reduces 

stress, and promotes feelings of happiness and trust. It 

also smulates the producon of serotonin and 

dopamine, neurotransmiers that help regulate mood 

and combat depression. Embracing others can alleviate 

feelings of loneliness and isolaon, fostering a sense of 

belonging and emoonal well-being. 

From a medical standpoint, hugs have been linked to 

lower heart rates and blood pressure, contribung to 

heart health. The reducon in stress levels, thanks to the 

decreased corsol producon during a hug, also bolsters 

the immune system. For individuals dealing with illness 

or emoonal distress, a hug can offer substanal comfort 

and a sense of empathy. 

But what about those of us who are not so keen on 

physical contact. Is there any way we can get the benefits 

of hugging without all the…hugs? I’m pleased to tell you 

that there is.

The History of New Year Resolutions 

It’s that time of the year again – so we take a look at the histor of New Year’s Resolutions 

On the 1 st of January, many of us will be making New 

Year’s resoluons as we do every year. But did you 

know the very first New Year’s resoluons date back 

to over 4,000 years ago. The first recorded people to 

celebrate a New Year were the ancient Babylonians. 

second Friday in January – less than two weeks into 

the year and which is known as Quiers’ Day. 

Their New Year celebraon was a twelve day fesval 

called Akitu which began at the start of the spring 

planng season in March. During their celebraons, 

Babylonians would make resoluons to their gods and 

if they kept their word their gods would grant them a 

favour or luck in the coming year, and they would also 

pledge their loyalty to the King and make promises to 

pay their debts and return borrowed items to their 

righul owners. 

It’s believed that the New Year offers a blank slate – 

an opportunity to get things right. When we set New 

Year’s resoluons, we are ulising a very important 

concept called self-efficacy, which means that by 

aspiring to a goal and following it through we have a 

sense of control of what is happening in our life. 

Figures show that about 30% of people don’t bother 

to make a New Year’s resoluon because they know 

they won’t keep to it. And, of course modern 

resoluons are very different and exercising more, 

healthier eang and losing weight were the three 

most popular New Year’s resoluons in 2023. 

But how successful are we at keeping our New Year’s 

resoluons ? 

While some people love the tradion of seng a goal 

each January 1 st , others argue it’s a waste of me 

since most resoluons fail by mid-March. 

About 23% of people don’t even make it through the 

first week, and most people toss in the towel by the

It’s suggested that we may be thinking too big, we're 

not considering the 'why' behind them, and the fact 

that we may not be ready for change. 

Research shows that 46% of people do keep 

resoluons for at least six month, and 8% keep them 

for the enre year. That 8% might seem small, but 

people who choose to make a New Year's resoluon 

are 10 mes as likely to keep them over those who 

pursue improvement in another way. 

However, according to a survey, an esmated 2 in 3 

people in the U.K. (66%) will be seng themselves 

New Year's resoluons in 2024. That's 35 million 

people taking deliberate steps to beer themselves as 

the year kicks off. 

So if you are making your own New Year’s resoluons 

for 2024, whatever they are, will you be amongst the 

8% or the 92% ?

Garden 

When the outlook is cold and bleak pour a mug of 

hot chocolate and start planning for Spring. 

We’d all like a dream garden right? But is your 

dream garden the same as your neighbour’s? 

Probably not. Whether you’re designing a garden 

from scratch or remodelling the one you have 

there is no ‘one size fits all’ garden design. Unless 

you can afford to have the professionals in - and 

they can be worth every penny - you’ll need to 

apply a lot of thought to the process. We’ve 

created this brief guide to give you a kick-start. 

Budget Be clear about this. There’s no point 

coming up with a grand design if you can’t afford 

to carry it through. 

Time If you work full me and have an acve 

social life you’ll need to think ‘low-maintenance.’ 

Consult your family What do they want from the 

garden. Small children will want a space to play; 

the adults might want a space to eat and 

entertain; you might want to grow your own veg, 

or herbs. 

Is it possible? How big is the garden? How much 

sun does it get? It’s no good planning lots of 

flowerbeds if the garden is in deep shade for most 

of the day. How can you compromise so that 

everyone is happy? 

What shape is your garden? Each shape presents 

its own challenge. Square can be boring and needs 

to be broken up using lots of curves. Long and thin 

can be disguised by dividing it into imaginary 

rooms linked by a winding path. Slopes can be 

challenging, especially if they’re steep but could 

be made into a feature by terracing or 

incorporang a waterfall. 

Firm up your ideas Do you want grass or paving? 

How much should be devoted to borders or 

flowerbeds? Will you need a new fence or would 

you rather have a natural hedge. Will you need 

professional help with any hard landscaping? 

Make a scale plan Measure all the major distances 

in your garden. It’s a good idea to take them from 

a fixed point, such as the corner of your house. Try 

1/4 or 1/2 inch = 1 foot if you’re not metric and 

1cm or 2cm = 1m if you are. When complete make 

several copies and draw all your ideas on to the 

plans unl you come up with one you really like. 

Because it’s to scale you can now carry out your 

plans with confidence. Happy Gardening!
