Welcome to the February 2024 edition of The 

Mosborough, Ridgeway & Owlthorpe Doorsteppa! 

We hope everyone has had a fantastic start to the year, 

managed to shake off the post Christmas blues, and got 

through ‘Dry January.’ For all of us here at Doorsteppa 

it has been another busy month - getting to know some 

new faces locally, and also catching up with some 

clients who we’ve been dealing with for over 15 years! 

Our local Travel Counsellor, Lisa Byers, is back with a 

guide to where the best places to travel are in 2024, as 

well as what the best time’s are to do so. Deciding 

where you take your next holiday can be quite 

daunting. There’s so many decisions to be made, so 

check out the guide in our Travel Section on page 32. 

As well as many other useful and entertaining features, 

we also have a review by The Sticky Beak Blog! The blog 

aims to sample food, wine and beer in local restaurants 

to uncover hidden treasures. They found themselves in 

The Sitwell Arms, Renishaw recently and we have the

Dinner In The Wild Boar Lounge at 

the Sitwell Arms Hotel, Renishaw 

A Dining Review by The Sticky Beak Blog 

It hasn’t been that long since 

Mummy, His Nibs and me were at 

the beauful building that is The Sitwell Arms Hotel and 

Restaurant in the village of Renishaw, but The Man and I 

found ourselves back here to sample the new menu. 

Having parked the jalopy in one of the many spaces, we 

sauntered through the main entrance doors. Straight 

ahead is the impressive, tradional bar, with a lounge 

area to the right. I should just menon for all the furparents 

out there that dogs are allowed in the garden 

and in the lounge bar. The Trans-Pennine route runs 

directly at the side of the venue, so if you plan to walk all 

the way to Rother Valley and back (!) you’ll certainly be 

ready for some nourishment and refreshment. Non-fur 

parents will also be happy to know that your bairns are 

welcomed at The Sitwell Arms to dine with you. 

Aer being seated, we were offered water for the table. I 

also ordered a glass of Shiraz, and His Nibs had a pint of 

Madri. 

As soon as he clapped eyes on the Black Pudding and 

Pulled Pork Frier (£7.95), The Man Bird knew what he 

was having for starter; I took a lile longer to decide, 

eventually I chose to have the prawns with Smoked 

Scosh Salmon, Marie Rose sauce and Pink Peppercorns, 

as I had seled on the Beef Wellington (£28.75) for my 

main course. His Nibs opted for the Twice-cooked Pork 

Belly, £18.50. 

No-one can accuse this team of being sngy with the 

poron sizes – my plaer was fully loaded with a 

generous pile of plump, succulent Prawns that were 

bound in a tangy, fresh herb boosted Marie Rose sauce 

and several ribbons of silky Smoked Salmon that had 

been carefully arranged next to them. The frier was 

obviously made as a larger dish and sliced as-and-when 

needed, and the base and sides were deliciously crispy, 

which provided a fantasc contrast to the soer, 

two-tone inside. Sandwiched between two paler layers of 

sweet, juicy Pulled pork was a darker central seam of 

full-bodied, earthy Black Pudding. As with mine, this 

was a wonderful first course. 

I had requested my Beef Wellington be cooked on the 

rarer side of medium/rare and this was exactly what I 

got. Both the beef and the pastry melted in my mouth; 

Chef had done an excellent job here. I loved the root 

vegetables too; they were sweet, fragrant and intense 

enough to stand up to the meat and wine-pimped sauce’s 

tastes. His Nibs and I both commented on how sublime 

the Dauphinoise Potatoes were as we cut through the 

crisp, golden outer and chomped the so, floury spuds 

that had been zhuzhed up with Cream, Cheese and Garlic 

– yummy!! 

His Nibs’ face was a picture when the HUGE slab of Belly 

Pork got placed before him. The crackling was top-notch; 

so good, in fact, that I only got one piece: greedy-guts ate 

the rest! Is nothing sacred?! 

Other members of The Wild Boar restaurant team had 

checked we were happy with our meals as we’d been 

making our way through them – we definitely were! 

Our tummies were prey full and in all honesty we 

should’ve skipped pudding; but when I spied Lemon 

Posset with Lemon Curd and Shortbread (£6.95) I was 

a -goner! Swily behind me, Him Indoors, quickly 

ordered the Salted Caramel and Chocolate Tart with 

Raspberry Sorbet and Vanilla Cream (£6.95). It’s no 

wonder I spend a good chunk of me in the gym! 

I smiled like a loon when I saw that my Lemon Posset was 

served in one, garnished with fresh Strawberries, 

Raspberries, Blueberries and a single, whole Physalis. The 

Chef had got the consistency bang on: not runny so as to 

drip off the spoon, but not so thick that it was clarty. I 

popped some of the Lemon Curd on top of the 

Shortbread – a genius move, if I say so myself, as the 

flavours complimented each other marvellously! 

The Man Birds’ tart (no, not me, you cheeky things!) had 

a beaufully delicate, scalloped edge whose pale colour 

only seemed to intensify the darkness of the filling. When 

he took the inial mouthful, he was pleased to discover 

that both flavours were superbly disnct and that the 

Salted Caramel was exactly that. Again, a superb offering 

from Chef and his team!

What is a Collier? from Colliers and I 

This month we featre an exact om the book Colliers and I, 30 Years Working 

Among Derbyshire Colliers by F.J. Metcalfe, Rector of Killamarsh, published 

in 1903. Metcalfe Avenue in Killamarsh is named aſter him. 

“ Having lived and worked unceasingly day and night 

among colliers for thirty years, I feel I need offer no 

apology for making posive statements about their 

characters, their manners and their customs as a 

whole, and as divided into classes, and as individuals. 

The general idea of colliers as expressed by those 

who know nothing about them is absolutely wrong. I 

have oen been asked how I can live among such a 

rough, unculvated, half savage lot as colliers? 

There could not be a more false judgement. 

The rough, unculvated, half savage element is to be 

found among all classes of society. The aristocracy 

are not free from scandals, and there have been 

many revelaons of such scandals in the public press 

that thousands of colliers would be ashamed of. 

There is no class of men more interesng, no class 

among whom are to be found more of Nature’s 

gentlemen, than among the colliers, and it is among 

them that I am proud to reckon my best and truest 

friends. They have their faults and in these pages I 

shall not hide them. They have their virtues, and it is 

one intenon of this work to proclaim them.

All colliers have a very great opinion of their own 

importance, neither will they admit that anyone 

knows anything about what ‘a day’s work’ is but 

themselves. As to anyone knowing what work is, if 

they don’t go to the pit, why it’s absurd. It is quite 

one of the faceous remarks if they see anyone, not a 

collier, gardening a bit to say, “I see yer do a bit o’ 

wark somemes”. No one is so easily offended as a 

collier, and he takes precious good care to let you 

know it, although it will very likely be months before 

you will find what he imagines you have done to him, 

and then, as likely as not, it has been caused by the 

idle tale of some gossiping woman. 

One of the worst features of a collier is that he finds 

its very hard to forgive, and he never forgets even an 

imaginary injury, and if at any future me a quarrel is 

renewed, he brings up all the past with as much 

vigour as the new offence. On the other hand they 

do not easily forget a kindness done to them or their 

families. 

As a whole colliers are, as they pride themselves in 

being, ‘rough and ready’. They are not parcularly 

choice in their manner of speech, and when talking 

together use much language that would shock the 

ears of the most fasdious, but is thought nothing by 

them, and they would deeply resent it if you gently 

suggested to them that they were swearing.” The 

collier almost always has a hobby, a dog, a pigeon, 

some kind of flower, a bike; a collier’s hobby must be 

something that will bring about compeon. You 

never find a collier with a ‘dead’ hobby, he must be 

able to say to his companion “I bet thee I can win 

thee” to his companion. 

If colliers are free of speech they are also free with 

their money. A collier hates to be thought mean by 

the companions among whom he moves, he will 

spend his last penny treang his mate, if he has to 

pawn his shirt next morning to buy a loaf of bread. 

He shews up best in me of trouble and danger, and 

worst at a football match where his feelings are so 

excited and uncontrollable that he can shew no 

pleasure or even toleraon for the good play of the

very suspicious, and always ready to impart unworthy

Clemas, oen hailed as the "Queen of the 

Climbers", is a beloved fixture in many UK gardens. 

Its enchanng flowers, ranging from delicate, star 

shaped blossoms to bold, dramac blooms, can 

transform fences, walls, and trellises into living art. 

But clemas, like many plants, needs pruning, and 

understanding the pruning requirements of your 

parcular clemas will depend on its pruning 

group. 

Clemas are categorized into three main pruning 

groups: 1, 2, and 3. These groups are determined 

by the plant's flowering me and the age of the 

flowering wood. 

Group 1 clemas bloom early in the year, 

flowering on the previous year's growth. These 

variees, like the alpine clemas, produce flowers 

in late spring and are generally the least 

demanding in terms of pruning. Pruning, if 

necessary, should be done immediately aer 

flowering. The goal is to remove dead or weak 

stems and to shape the plant, but heavy pruning is 

not needed. If le unpruned, these clemas can 

become a tangle of old wood with few flowers. 

Group 2 clemas flower in late spring or early 

summer on short shoots developing from the 

previous year's growth and oen have a second, 

less vigorous flush in late summer on the current 

year's growth. Examples include the popular 

variees like 'Nelly Moser' and 'Miss Bateman'. 

Pruning for Group 2 should be light, focusing on 

removing dead and weak stems in late winter or 

early spring, so February is the perfect me. You 

can also lightly prune aer the first flowering to 

encourage a more robust second bloom. 

Group 3 clemas flower on the current year's 

growth, producing blooms from mid to late 

summer unl the first frost. This group includes 

variees like 'Jackmanii' and 'Sweet Autumn 

Clemas'. They require more extensive pruning, 

cut back almost to ground level (15-30 cm above 

the ground) in February. This encourages strong 

new growth and a profusion of flowers at a 

manageable height. 

Why prune at all? It’s important because it 

rejuvenates the plant by encouraging new growth, 

which is essenal for flowering, parcularly in 

Group 2 and 3 clemas. It helps maintain the 

shape and size of the plant, prevenng it from 

becoming unruly and tangled. Regular pruning also 

allows for beer air circulaon through the plant, 

reducing the risk of fungal diseases. 

When pruning, always use clean, sharp tools to 

make clean cuts. This prevents damage to the 

plant and reduces the risk of disease. Aer 

pruning, it's beneficial to apply a balanced ferlizer 

and mulch to provide nutrients and maintain soil 

moisture. 

With the right pruning techniques, your clemas 

will be a stunning feature in your garden, 

showcasing its floral beauty season aer season.
