Welcome to the <strong>Feb</strong>ruary <strong>2024</strong> edition of The<br />

<strong>Barlborough</strong>, Clowne & Renishaw Doorsteppa!<br />

We hope everyone has had a fantastic start to the year,<br />

managed to shake off the post Christmas blues, and got<br />

through ‘Dry January.’ For all of us here at Doorsteppa<br />

it has been another busy month - getting to know some<br />

new faces locally, and also catching up with some<br />

clients who we’ve been dealing with for over 15 years!<br />

Our local Travel Counsellor, Lisa Byers, is back with a<br />

guide to where the best places to travel are in <strong>2024</strong>, as<br />

well as what the best time’s are to do so. Deciding<br />

where you take your next holiday can be quite<br />

daunting. There’s so many decisions to be made, so<br />

check out the guide in our Travel Section on page 40.<br />

As well as many other useful and entertaining features,<br />

we also have a review by The Sticky Beak Blog! The blog<br />

aims to sample food, wine and beer in local restaurants<br />

to uncover hidden treasures. They found themselves in<br />

The Sitwell Arms, Renishaw recently and we have the<br />

full review in our Food & Drink Section on page 14.<br />

A Dining Review by The Sticky Beak Blog<br />

It hasn’t been that long since<br />

Mummy, His Nibs and me were at<br />

the beauful building that is The Sitwell Arms Hotel and<br />

Restaurant in the village of Renishaw, but The Man and I<br />

found ourselves back here to sample the new menu.<br />

Having parked the jalopy in one of the many spaces, we<br />

sauntered through the main entrance doors. Straight<br />

ahead is the impressive, tradional bar, with a lounge<br />

area to the right. I should just menon for all the furparents<br />

out there that dogs are allowed in the garden<br />

and in the lounge bar. The Trans-Pennine route runs<br />

directly at the side of the venue, so if you plan to walk all<br />

the way to Rother Valley and back (!) you’ll certainly be<br />

ready for some nourishment and refreshment. Non-fur<br />

parents will also be happy to know that your bairns are<br />

welcomed at The Sitwell Arms to dine with you.<br />

Aer being seated, we were offered water for the table. I<br />

also ordered a glass of Shiraz, and His Nibs had a pint of<br />

Madri.<br />

As soon as he clapped eyes on the Black Pudding and<br />

Pulled Pork Frier (£7.95), The Man Bird knew what he<br />

was having for starter; I took a lile longer to decide,<br />

eventually I chose to have the prawns with Smoked<br />

Scosh Salmon, Marie Rose sauce and Pink Peppercorns,<br />

as I had seled on the Beef Wellington (£28.75) for my<br />

main course. His Nibs opted for the Twice-cooked Pork<br />

Belly, £18.50.<br />

No-one can accuse this team of being sngy with the<br />

poron sizes – my plaer was fully loaded with a<br />

generous pile of plump, succulent Prawns that were<br />

bound in a tangy, fresh herb boosted Marie Rose sauce<br />

and several ribbons of silky Smoked Salmon that had<br />

been carefully arranged next to them. The frier was<br />

obviously made as a larger dish and sliced as-and-when<br />

needed, and the base and sides were deliciously crispy,<br />

which provided a fantasc contrast to the soer,<br />

two-tone inside. Sandwiched between two paler layers of<br />

sweet, juicy Pulled pork was a darker central seam of<br />

full-bodied, earthy Black Pudding. As with mine, this<br />

was a wonderful first course.<br />

I had requested my Beef Wellington be cooked on the<br />

rarer side of medium/rare and this was exactly what I<br />

got. Both the beef and the pastry melted in my mouth;<br />

Chef had done an excellent job here. I loved the root<br />

vegetables too; they were sweet, fragrant and intense<br />

enough to stand up to the meat and wine-pimped sauce’s<br />

tastes. His Nibs and I both commented on how sublime<br />

the Dauphinoise Potatoes were as we cut through the<br />

crisp, golden outer and chomped the so, floury spuds<br />

that had been zhuzhed up with Cream, Cheese and Garlic<br />

– yummy!!<br />

His Nibs’ face was a picture when the HUGE slab of Belly<br />

Pork got placed before him. The crackling was top-notch;<br />

so good, in fact, that I only got one piece: greedy-guts ate<br />

the rest! Is nothing sacred?!<br />

Other members of The Wild Boar restaurant team had<br />

checked we were happy with our meals as we’d been<br />

making our way through them – we definitely were!<br />

Our tummies were prey full and in all honesty we<br />

should’ve skipped pudding; but when I spied Lemon<br />

Posset with Lemon Curd and Shortbread (£6.95) I was<br />

a -goner! Swily behind me, Him Indoors, quickly<br />

ordered the Salted Caramel and Chocolate Tart with<br />

Raspberry Sorbet and Vanilla Cream (£6.95). It’s no<br />

wonder I spend a good chunk of me in the gym!<br />

I smiled like a loon when I saw that my Lemon Posset was<br />

served in one, garnished with fresh Strawberries,<br />

Raspberries, Blueberries and a single, whole Physalis. The<br />

Chef had got the consistency bang on: not runny so as to<br />

drip off the spoon, but not so thick that it was clarty. I<br />

popped some of the Lemon Curd on top of the<br />

Shortbread – a genius move, if I say so myself, as the<br />

flavours complimented each other marvellously!<br />

The Man Birds’ tart (no, not me, you cheeky things!) had<br />

a beaufully delicate, scalloped edge whose pale colour<br />

only seemed to intensify the darkness of the filling. When<br />

he took the inial mouthful, he was pleased to discover<br />

that both flavours were superbly disnct and that the<br />

Salted Caramel was exactly that. Again, a superb offering<br />

from Chef and his team!<br />

What is a Collier? from Colliers and I<br />

This month we featre an exact om the book Colliers and I, 30 Years Working<br />

Among Derbyshire Colliers by F.J. Metcalfe, Rector of Killamarsh, published<br />

in 1903. Metcalfe Avenue in Killamarsh is named aſter him.<br />

“ Having lived and worked unceasingly day and night<br />

among colliers for thirty years, I feel I need offer no<br />

apology for making posive statements about their<br />

characters, their manners and their customs as a<br />

whole, and as divided into classes, and as individuals.<br />

The general idea of colliers as expressed by those<br />

who know nothing about them is absolutely wrong. I<br />

have oen been asked how I can live among such a<br />

rough, unculvated, half savage lot as colliers?<br />

There could not be a more false judgement.<br />

The rough, unculvated, half savage element is to be<br />

found among all classes of society. The aristocracy<br />

are not free from scandals, and there have been<br />

many revelaons of such scandals in the public press<br />

that thousands of colliers would be ashamed of.<br />

There is no class of men more interesng, no class<br />

among whom are to be found more of Nature’s<br />

gentlemen, than among the colliers, and it is among<br />

them that I am proud to reckon my best and truest<br />

friends. They have their faults and in these pages I<br />

shall not hide them. They have their virtues, and it is<br />

one intenon of this work to proclaim them.<br />

All colliers have a very great opinion of their own<br />

importance, neither will they admit that anyone<br />

knows anything about what ‘a day’s work’ is but<br />

themselves. As to anyone knowing what work is, if<br />

they don’t go to the pit, why it’s absurd. It is quite<br />

one of the faceous remarks if they see anyone, not a<br />

collier, gardening a bit to say, “I see yer do a bit o’<br />

wark somemes”. No one is so easily offended as a<br />

collier, and he takes precious good care to let you<br />

know it, although it will very likely be months before<br />

you will find what he imagines you have done to him,<br />

and then, as likely as not, it has been caused by the<br />

idle tale of some gossiping woman.<br />

One of the worst features of a collier is that he finds<br />

its very hard to forgive, and he never forgets even an<br />

imaginary injury, and if at any future me a quarrel is<br />

renewed, he brings up all the past with as much<br />

vigour as the new offence. On the other hand they<br />

do not easily forget a kindness done to them or their<br />

families.<br />

As a whole colliers are, as they pride themselves in<br />

being, ‘rough and ready’. They are not parcularly<br />

choice in their manner of speech, and when talking<br />

together use much language that would shock the<br />

ears of the most fasdious, but is thought nothing by<br />

them, and they would deeply resent it if you gently<br />

suggested to them that they were swearing.” The<br />

collier almost always has a hobby, a dog, a pigeon,<br />

some kind of flower, a bike; a collier’s hobby must be<br />

something that will bring about compeon. You<br />

ST GILES CHURCH BELL’S PROJECT<br />

The Church was awarded a National Heritage Loer Grant at the end<br />

of the summer that will enable the bells to be repaired and rng once more.<br />

To achieve this goal, however,<br />

there’s always another ‘list’ of<br />

things that sit alongside such a<br />

venture. Over the next 18<br />

months we plan to do other<br />

activities that will introduce the<br />

church, its grounds and<br />

heritage to a wider audience.<br />

This project main aim is to<br />

restore the peel of bells<br />

contained within the bell tower<br />

of a Grade 2* listed building.<br />

This means the church is in the<br />

top 3% of the nation’s top<br />

building of historical interest.<br />

The condition have been<br />

assessed by conservators and<br />

an assessment of the bells,<br />

structures etc has been fully<br />

documented.<br />

The aims of the project<br />

- restore the bells (not listed<br />

individually)<br />

- instigate new a new team of<br />

bell ringers<br />

- research the bells history<br />

- research the Treble Bob peel<br />

- support activities that reflect<br />

the heritage of St Giles in the<br />

community for past 1,000 years<br />

- support community learning<br />

about our grade 2* heritage<br />

building<br />

- hold activities to develop<br />

learning and research of the<br />

church itself<br />

- learn how bells are cast and<br />

strung with manufacturers and<br />

learn about a rare heritage skill<br />

that just about exists.<br />

- Promote heritage skills where<br />

possible<br />

- design an exhibition that can<br />

tell the story of the Treble Bob<br />

and book about St Giles<br />

Within the project we will be<br />

seeking to support, train and<br />

restart the Band and a Tower<br />

Captain role. If sufficient<br />

interest is shown amongst<br />

existing bell ringers and<br />

potential trainees then the bells<br />

at St Giles may be rung once<br />

again on a regular basis.<br />

But what is the Treble Bob – for<br />

the general layman like myself<br />

I’d like to know more about how<br />

the story of the Treble Bob<br />

came about, its meaning and<br />

connection with the church. It’s<br />

certainly a cultural identity that’s<br />

been around for a while. A<br />

plaque in the tower 1801<br />

records a Treble Bob event.<br />

Within planned activities with St<br />

Giles school will be a resident<br />

artist helping to interpret the<br />

church and grounds for the<br />

children and Forest School<br />

practitioners to help them.<br />

For the wider community wildlife<br />

activities to show the<br />

importance of such places as a<br />

green oasis – natural history is<br />

just as important to get over to<br />

people since often these places<br />

have changed little in hundreds<br />

of years and support rarer flora<br />

and fauna. From this we hope<br />

to create a wildlife trail<br />

concentrating on the grounds<br />

and building itself.<br />

We plan to create a few<br />

podcasts for social media so<br />

other communities can learn<br />

about the site plus create a 21 st<br />

century photographic record of<br />

everything in the church,<br />

outside and the grounds.<br />

Hopefully a local photographic<br />

group and students from the<br />

local secondary school in<br />

Eckington will be involved;<br />

supporting them on their GCSE<br />

and A level projects.<br />

At the end of the project we aim<br />

to have a small exhibition about<br />

the restoration with supporting<br />

printed materials such<br />

children’s activity sheets.<br />

We shall keep updating local<br />

social media, church website<br />

etc so everyone can see<br />

progress.<br />

Local Chronicle<br />

This month Lee Rowley M.P. gives us an update on the<br />

plans for the new Train Station in Killamarsh ….<br />

“Late last year, aer three years of campaigning, we<br />

won the campaign to re-open the Barrow Hill line to<br />

passenger traffic. That will mean when it opens, for<br />

the first me in 60 years, that passenger trains will<br />

stop again at Staveley / Barrow Hill and Killamarsh.<br />

This idea first got going back in 2021 and, over the<br />

succeeding two and a half years, working with the<br />

County Council, Network Rail and the South<br />

Yorkshire Mayor, we have put together a prey<br />

detailed proposal about how to re-open the line<br />

once again. With the freeing up of capital money<br />

from the cancellaon of HS2, the Government<br />

confirmed it would fund the staons at Killamarsh<br />

and Staveley / Barrow Hill.<br />

Since then, Network Rail have been connuing to<br />

work on the business case and the detail – inevitably<br />

all of these projects take me and need a lot of<br />

background work!<br />

The current stage will be finished in the early Spring<br />

and that should mean that, later this year, we have a<br />

clear plan for when it will happen and when we start<br />

seeing things like planning permissions going in and<br />

the like. The staons won’t be immediate but, with<br />

the good news that it has been agreed in principle,<br />

we are taking this forward – and hopefully it won’t<br />

be too long.<br />

Geng the staons opened is going to be a big job<br />

for North East Derbyshire’s MP, too and that’s why I<br />

regularly try to catch up with both Network Rail and<br />

Ministers to keep tabs on progress. There’s also a<br />

prey important interacon with the Staveley Town<br />

deal (which will fund addional facilies at Staveley /<br />

Barrow Hill staon) where we need to make sure that<br />

the project mings all work together well.<br />

So, a massive step forward last year in terms of<br />

geng a commitment to do this. Now, the hard work<br />

starts in terms of converng it into real life staons!<br />

And, then, in the future and when we've got Staveley<br />

and Killamarsh staons open, we need to try for<br />

some other staons elsewhere on the line, too.”<br />
