Celebrating Robbie Burns Day 

Robbie Burns Day, observed annually on January 25th, is a celebration 

of the life and works of Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet. 

This day, also known as Burns Night, is marked with traditional Scottish 

festivities that honor the legacy of the beloved bard. From lively 

gatherings to poetic readings and the iconic Burns Supper, the day is 

a cultural extravaganza that brings people together to celebrate Scotland’s 

rich literary heritage. 

Born on January 25, 1759, in Alloway, Ayrshire, Robert Burns left 

behind a remarkable body of work that continues to resonate with 

readers worldwide. Some of his most celebrated works include “Auld 

Lang Syne,” a New Year’s Eve staple, and “To a Mouse,” a poignant 

reflection on the human condition. Burns’s ability to use the Scots dialect 

in his writing contributed to the authenticity and uniqueness of 

his voice. 

One of the central elements of Robbie Burns Day is the Burns Supper, 

a festive event held in honor of the poet. The supper typically 

includes traditional Scottish fare, such as haggis, neeps (turnips), and 

tatties (potatoes). The evening unfolds with the reading of Burns’s 

poetry, including the “Address to a Haggis,” a humorous and eloquent

2023 Safety Improvement Award 

Staff at the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) are 

celebrating after bringing back a prestigious 2023 Safety Improvement 

Award from this year’s BC Municipal Safety Conference. 

The accolade recognises the RDKB’s transformational efforts in 

improving safety practices, experience ratings, and most importantly, 

reducing injuries, illnesses, diseases, and fatalities within its 

community. 

Colin MacAskill, RDKB’s Safety Advisor, who joined the organization 

in 2022, highlights the significance of the award, stating, “This 

was a team achievement and the recognition reinforces the RDKB’s 

continual improvement in health and safety.” 

Award eligibility was open to any local government within BC, 

encompassing cities, villages, townships, districts, municipalities, 

and regional districts. A reduction of 15 percentage points or more in 

safety incidents over the past four years was required, with the current 

experience rating no greater than +20%.

Oxygen Art Centre 

presents a series of community 

art events entitled 

Lost Cat! Taking place 

during the Spring 2024 

semester, the series offers 

free art-making sessions 

with local artists. 

The third workshop of 

the series takes place on 

Saturday, February 24, 

2024, from 1:00 to 3:00 

PM at Oxygen Art Centre. 

Writer and educator 

Rayya Liebich leads the workshop, which will guide participants 

in altered book and poetry practices. 

This all levels, all ages workshop is for anyone who likes to 

create and doesn’t want to be bound by rules! Using the container 

of a hardcover discarded book, participants will be 

introduced to a variety of artistic mediums (blackout poetry, 

book folding, collage, stenciling, stamping, and more) to 

transform their book into a unique creation. 

This hands-on and fun project reveals infinite possibilities 

of creative play, celebrates divergent thinking, and results in 

artworks as diverse as the people who made them. Inspiring 

examples and a wide array of materials will be provided. 

The public are invited to attend the third Lost Cat! event at 

Oxygen Art Centre on Saturday, February 24, 2024, from 1:00 

to 3:00 PM. All materials provided. No experience necessary. 

Interested participants are expected to take part in the full 

two-hour session. Contact Oxygen Art Centre with any questions 

about the sessions or access needs to the facility.

New Book Club 

If your New Year’s resolve is to grow in understanding of 

Indigenous culture and history, start your year right by joining 

the Nelson Library’s new book club. Indigenous Reads Book 

Club will include a monthly meeting along with a curated 

selection of books written by Indigenous authors that explore 

the truth of Indigenous history and the richness of Indigenous 

culture. New learners are welcome to come to one or to all five 

meetings. 

Each meeting’s conversation will revolve around a specific 

theme, such as MMIWG2S (Murdered, Missing Indigenous 

Women, Girls, Two Spirit); Residential Schools; Indigenous 

History; Indigiqueer; and Indigenous Humour. Copies of the 

book assigned to each conversation can be found at the front 

desk anytime we are open and read before each meeting. 

The new book club has evolved out of the library’s new strategic 

framework which includes a commitment to diversity, 

equity and inclusion, with a promise that “truth, reconciliation, 

Indigenization and decolonization inform our programs, 

services and policies.” 

Adult Services Coordinator Melodie Rae Storey says that the 

Indigenous Reads Book Club is one way to start a relationship 

with Indigenous peoples. “I believe in the power of Indigenous 

literature as a good first step to understanding. The artistry 

of the authors, the humor woven through the darkness, the 

power of their storytelling is an educational experience, but 

also just an immense pleasure for any book lover.” 

Indigenous Reads Book Club runs from January to May at 

the Nelson Library.

Annora left this world abruptly 

and accidentally in hospital, 

to the enduring heartbreak of 

partners and friends, family, and 

communities. 

Annora came into this world at 

home, mid-argument. From the 

start, Annora was an opponent 

of convention and rules. Any 

one of us was no match for her 

will, head on. We took turns. 

Annora’s spirit was big, strong, 

and joyful. She loved to play 

with reactions. Her art was far 

beyond her age and usually beyond 

the imagination of ‘official’ 

adults. She would inevitably, 

ineluctably, press The Big Red 

Button in any circumstance. 

Annora was a generous friend. 

Being comforted by Annora was rich and deep and 

wholly healing. Raven-like, Annora collected things 

from the people in her life, and kept these ‘shiny 

objects’ – mugs, forks, sweaters – all around the nest. 

Strangers were friends not yet met, her whole 

life. Last October, Annora brought three mandarin 

oranges along – one for each of the two of them, and 

one for the new friend they might just meet. 

Annora wanted the world to be better than it was, 

and battled with courage, chocolate and good coffee 

against institutional violence, toxic capitalism, and 

oppression. These are difficult battles, and Annora felt 

the wounds of others deeply. There are many losses in 

the battles against inhumanity. 

The list of those that mourn is very long. Annora is 

survived by their partners Maddy and Ethan, mother 

Shauna, sister Elysha (Colin), brother Keenan, other 

mother Tara (John), nephews Tristan and Charlie, 

grandparents Ken and Patricia, great aunt Holly, and 

father Robert (Laverne), and her extended family. 

They are deeply mourned by friends Emily, Hunter, 

Andrea, Jemma, Innana, Scarlett, and many more 

across many communities. 

We are deeply grateful for the wisdom, grace 

and comfort that have come to us from our 

extended family, from this community and 

from Annora’s communities. We expect to have 

a celebration of life in the spring.

passing of our beloved brother Jeff due to natural 

causes on January 4, 2024 in his 77 th year.

support over the last 30+ years, when Jeff 

relocated from Etobicoke, Ontario, where he 

grew up.

It is with our great honour to send 

off our beautiful Mom to meet her 

Heavenly Father. Diana Lorraine Pilla 

(Wakeham) passed away on Tuesday, 

January 2, 2024. She was 81 

years of age. 

Diana, youngest of two daughters, 

was born October 24, 1942, in Victoria 

BC to Bill and Dorothy Wakeham. On October 6, 1962, Diana 

married James Leo Pilla. They lived in beautiful BC but spent the 

majority of their married years in Castlegar, where they raised 

their 3 children, Darren, Grant and Wendy. 

Diana worked in the banking industry, most of her career was 19 

years at the Credit Union as a personal loans clerk in the latter 

years. She was a member of the CWL for almost 53 years, some 

of those years as president while she lived in Quesnel. She served 

wholeheartedly, impacting many lives with her faith, love and 

compassion. One of Mom’s greatest gifts was her gift of hospitality; 

anyone was welcome for a hot cup of something, a homemade 

meal and some goodies, surrounded by abounding kindness. 

Diana will be lovingly remembered by her 3 children, Darren Pilla 

(wife Nicole), Grant Pilla (wife Elaine), and Wendy Delcourt (husband 

Grant); her 7 grandchildren, Megan, James, Allyshia, Craig, 

Eric, Hannah and Madison; her 5 great-grandchildren, Rosie, Lucius, 

Tobias, Nathaniel and Abbey; her beautiful sister, Barbara 

Wade and endless extended family and friends. 

Some words of wisdom Diana shared: 

There is more to life than cleaning, play more! 

Life is always better with an extra hot cup of tea! 

Family is the truest blessing! 

Always be kind! 

“MOM we have learned that there is nothing more special in life 

than the love of a Mother and Father and the power of example. 

The power of love. The power of truth. The power of faith. The 

power of understanding and the power of discipline! We will love 

you forever Mom and we will be seeing you again one day!” 

Diana’s celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 10th 

from 12:30 - 2:30pm at St. Rita’s Hall at 513, 7th Avenue Castlegar.

1/8 cup ground cumin 

1 tablespoon garlic powder 

1 tablespoon paprika 

1 tablespoon sea salt 

Put ingredients into a jar and shake. 

DRY ONION SOUP MIX: 

2/3 cup dried, minced onion 

3 teaspoons parsley flakes 

2 teaspoons onion powder 

2 teaspoons turmeric 

1 teaspoon celery salt 

1 teaspoon sea salt 

1 teaspoon sugar 

1/2 teaspoon ground pepper 

Mix all ingredients in a jar, then give the jar a good shake. I’d 

recommend shaking the jar to mix the ingredients well before 

each use. Use 4 tablespoons in a recipe in place of 1 packet of 

onion soup mix. Store this in a dry, cool place. 

RANCH: 

5 tablespoons dried minced onions 

7 teaspoons parsley flakes 

4 teaspoons salt 

1 teaspoon garlic powder 

Mix together and store in air tight container. 

For Dressing: Mix 2 tablespoons dry mix with 1 cup mayonnaise 

and 1 cup buttermilk or sour cream. 

For Dip: Mix 2 tablespoons dry mix with 2 cups sour cream 

or Greek Yogurt. 

Mix up a few hours before serving so the flavours all blend.

If you have questions on the latest changes to the Agricultural 

Land Commission Policy on residences in the Agricultural 

Land Reserve, here is a rundown. 

Effective December 31, 2021, the ALR Use Regulation, s. 

34.3 permits one additional residence if the following conditions 

are met: 

At the time construction of the additional residence begins 

there is only one residence on the parcel; and 

On a property 40 ha or less, once constructed there will be a 

principal residence with total floor area of 500 m 2 or less and 

one residence with a total floor area of 90 m 2 or less, if permitted 

by local government bylaw; OR 

On a property larger than 40 ha, where there is a lawfully 

constructed principal residence*, one 186 m 2 additional residence 

may be permitted, (if permitted by local government 

bylaw. 

*a lawfully constructed principal residence refers to a residence 

that pre-dates the legislative changes made on February 

22, 2019 under Bill 52 or a residence larger than 500 m 2 

as approved by the ALC and constructed with appropriate
