DIRECTION | SUSTAINABILITY www.iod.com/scotland IoD’s Sustainability Ambassadors are here to help Sustainability is no longer viewed as a ‘nice to have’ in business strategy. The ability to articulate a clear position in respect to sustainability issues can give businesses the edge, help attract and retain team members in a difficult recruitment market, potentially offer new strategic opportunities and reduce business risks. Many businesses are using sustainability to drive growth and move to positions of a ‘new normal’ with a focus on continued but sustainable growth, resilience in supply chains and the ability to embrace new opportunities presented by the low carbon (net zero) and circular economy. Next steps Working out how and where to start can be a real challenge. For those companies already progressing, identifying the next steps can often seem bewildering. The world of sustainability is full of jargon and targets, but it need not be complicated. The drivers to incorporate sustainability in your business may vary but often include regulatory, investor and consumer demands. Formal systems and accreditations such as ESG (environmental, social, and corporate governance) and B-Corp certification, among others, can help, but may not be appropriate for all. The key is to articulate a clear and authentic position which can be reflected in the way your business operates. How the IoD can help The IoD is here to help its members. On a UK basis the IoD publishes papers and manages events focused on the sustainability issue. It has got off to an early start in January 2024 by publishing a paper titled ‘Grasping the Net Zero Opportunity’ and presenting a case study of Turley Advisors, ‘Empowering the whole business to achieve net zero’. These resources are available free of charge on the IoD website. Click here IoD Scotland’s role IoD Scotland, via a network of regional Sustainability Ambassadors, can offer support and can connect you to others that may be able to help. These Ambassadors have a broad range of experience and act as a conduit to help your network with other members. IoD Scotland members are encouraged to contact the National Lead and Regional IoD Sustainability Ambassadors, or they can be accessed via the regional Branch Chairs who are happy to help. IoD Scotland Sustainability Leads working with the Regional Branches offer events, with networking opportunities and the chance to hear from experts in the field as well as case studies from members. Following on from the success of the seminar organised by the Aberdeen Branch in October 2023, a second Sustainability Seminar and Opportunity saw the co-Chairs of the Highlands and Islands IoD Branch, Alison Wilson and Clare Winskill, meet up with members 24th January. The event included updates from the manufacturing, transportation, hospitality, renewable and finance sectors and concluded with a tour of Uile-bheist’s state-of-the-art sustainable distillery and brewery.
