HUB Closing 

The Nelson Committee on Homelessness (NCH) has had to make 

the very difficult decision to terminate the lease for the current 

Coordinated Access HUB (HUB) location at 521 Vernon Street in 

March 2024. Plans are underway to ensure the closure of the HUB 

will not affect providing services to the community. 

Every effort was made to keep the doors open, however, with the 

end of a two-year Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) grant and 

the significant decrease in federal government funding, along with 

the significant increased costs in rent and overhead, it is impossible 

to sustain the service at this location moving forward. 

NCOH partners are aware that the closure of the HUB will have 

a significant impact on the vulnerable population, peers and frontline 

workers. Many people have contributed with compassion and 

heart to the operation of the HUB over the years it has existed; providing 

hundreds of people with warmth, food and health services 

in this community. So much appreciation goes to everyone who has 

contributed to this vision of many needed services under one roof. 

We will continue to advocate for funding and support for a HUB 

program for this community. We are working diligently to find a 

new location that is suitable to the host the drop-in resource and 

referral centre with extended services that will be sustainable over 

the long-term. We hope that this unfortunate circumstance is a 

short pause in a longer-term solution for these essential services 

We acknowledge that there is a lot of work to do in partnership to 

stand up another HUB service to which we are determined to make 

happen. We are requesting that NCOH’s member organizations, 

and the community, come together to collaborate and strategize 

on potential opportunities and sustainable funding sources. Please

Short-Term Rental Update 

B.C. is facing a housing crisis, with a shortage of all forms of 

attainable housing, including long-term rentals. 

The rise of short-term rental of entire homes is taking away 

much needed homes for British Columbians. Data shows that 

more than 16,000 entire homes are being used as short-term rentals 

for the majority of the year in B.C. This is making it more challenging 

to find affordable long-term rentals. 

Many local governments have taken action to regulate

We are deeply saddened to announce that Eric Jorgensen 

suddenly collapsed and died while out on a sunny mountain 

bike ride with a good friend on December 23, 2023. 

His large family and close friends were very important to 

Eric, and he especially loved being a dad. He had an ever-ready 

smile and a clever wit. He was a comedic storyteller. Eric established 

and maintained solid friendships and was a very loyal 

and supportive person. He was eager to share information and 

was always interested in talking to people of all ages. 

Eric was a valued member of the Argenta and Nelson communities. 

He played mandolin with the Argenta Old Time 

Band, sang in the Makado and performed in several Nelson 

musical productions. Recently, he was a member of the Cottonwood 

Singers. He was a self-taught fine woodworker and 

enjoyed crafting pieces for his family and friends. 

While born in Eugene, Oregon, he was raised in Nelson, BC 

where he had a Kootenay boyhood: skating on the backyard 

rinks, building tree forts, and entertaining the neighbours with 

his antics. He was encouraged by his father to enjoy the local 

mountains and lakes. From an early age, he loved to bike and 

in recent years developed a passion for cross-country skiing. 

After attending L.V. Rogers High School, he worked as a lift 

operator at Whitewater Ski Hill and was a tree planter across 

BC and Alberta. 

He also studied at the University of Victoria Music Faculty 

as a trumpet player. This began his lifelong passion for classical 

and choral music.

27, 1946, in Pincher Creek, 

Alberta to Rachel and Willard 

Dwyer. 

David grew up in Lundbreck 

and graduated University of 

Alberta in 1969 with a degree 

in Mechanical Engineering. 

He formed Dwyer Engineering 

and Construction. David 

married the love of his life, 

Helen in 1971 in Calgary. 

David was very proud and 

involved with his three sons 

Shawn, Ryan, and Colin in all 

their activities. 

While semi-retired 

David 

went back to 

University of 

Calgary and 

got his MBA in 

1989. 

David travelled 

extensively 

for work 

and pleasure. 

He loved to learn about the 

people and land wherever he 

went. 

His company was one of his 

passions. 

David lived life to the fullest 

through his company, family

and a host of nieces, nephews, 

cousins, and colleagues.

the passing of Ronald 

James Reber on January 

25, 2024. 

Ron was born to James 

Ferdinand Reber and 

Mildred Isabelle Reber 

(Grant) on December 

25 1947 in Cobourg 

Ontario. 

Ron is survived by his 

loving spouse Sunnie 

Wichmann, his 

children Lee-Ann Lukacs(Frances), 

Mike Reber 

(Jennifer) and Jason Wichmann, 

his grandchildren 

Reed Gilbert, Cazimir Lukacs, 

Nyasha Lukacs, Kasia Lukacs, 

Ania Lukacs, Lorelei Reber 

and Julian Reber and great 

grandchildren Rhett Gilbert 

and Dorian Lukacs and many 

nieces, nephews, cousins and 

friends. Ron was predeceased 

by his parents and his sister 

Isabelle. 

Ron grew up in the Ontario. 

His life took him from the 

tobacco fields to gold mining 

sector of Ontario, then to a 

life in the Canadian Airforce 

being a helicopter mechanic 

which took him west to Moose 

Jaw, Sask where he started his 

family. He was then taken further 

west to Alberta and north 

to the Arctic where he worked 

in varying roles in the Oil and 

Gas sector, making many lifelong 

friendships. This is also 

where he met his life partner. 

The next several years 

were spent driving truck and 

being available to those who 

needed him. Ronald’s spare 

time would be spent reading, 

enjoying time with friends or 

possibly enjoying a good or 

not so good sci fi show. He 

enjoyed them all. After all 

the children had grown, they 

moved further west to his last 

home in Meadow Creek B.C. 

where he enjoyed easing into 

his retirement years with his 

loving spouse. Ron loved life 

in Meadow Creek. 

As those who knew him understood 

he was a quiet, kind 

and humble man who affected 

his close world with his heart 

and friendship. He asked for 

nothing and gave all he could, 

more than he should at times. 

Ronald James Reber will be 

missed and remembered by 

all those that survive him. 

We are all so happy to have 

experienced you in our lives. 

Thank you.

Pottery Throw Down on CBC 

Alice Gibson nurtured her passion for creating beauty from 

clay in the bustling ceramics studio on Selkirk College’s Victoria 

Street Campus where she developed confidence at the pottery 

wheel that has propelled her onto the national stage. 

Chosen as one of 10 amateur potters in a nationwide search, 

Gibson is a contestant on The Great Canadian Pottery Throw 

Down that premieres on CBC Gem and CBC television on February 

8. Graduating from the 10-month Ceramics Program with 

the college’s Class of 2023, the Penticton native is a cast member 

on the eight-episode show that’s hosted by Canadian actress Jennifer 

Robertson and features Seth Rogen as a guest judge. 

“It’s a feel-good show, I think everyone can find a little reason 

to watch,” says the 22-year-old. “It could be for the ceramics or 

for the people, but it’s a special show. The care, the passion and 

the creativity that went into all this… it was magic.”

even watch the trailer, I have never seen myself on television 

before… it’s such a foreign concept to me. I am very excited that

Captain Kangaroo Trail 

Selkirk College alumna Sarah Meunier’s passion for outdoor 

recreation and leadership in creating quality rides for the region’s 

mountain biking community has landed Castlegar at the top of a 

prestigious global list. 

At the end of 2023, Trailforks released its top-10 rated mountain 

bike trails from across the planet. A high quality trail management 

system for outdoor enthusiasts in a variety of sports, 

the Trailforks app collected input from its users and the 4.4 kilometre 

mountain bike trail in the Merry Creek recreation area 

dubbed “Captain Kangaroo” was rated number-one. 

“At first I was shocked because I didn’t know it was going to 

happen,” says Meunier, who is the executive director of the nonprofit 

Castlegar Parks & Trails Society (CPTS). “But, it’s based on 

user ratings, so out of 600,000-plus trails in the world on Trailforks, 

Captain Kangaroo was chosen as the best. It is a substantial 

accomplishment, it’s legitimate and we are very proud.” 

A graduate of the Recreation, Fish & Wildlife Program, Meunier 

began volunteering with CPTS while still a student on the 

Castlegar Campus. After graduation in 2013, she started working 

seasonally as a maintenance crew lead and trail builder. Meunier 

has been the executive director of CPTS since 2020 in a parttime, 

year-round role. 

The society is a charitable non-profit organization that builds 

and maintains environmentally sensitive, non-motorized, mountain 

biking and on-foot traversable trails. Working on projects 

like the Trans Canada Trail through the greater Castlegar area 

and the bike park in Millennium Park, CPTS has been actively 

building new mountain biking trails in the Merry Creek area. 

The genesis of Captain Kangaroo started in 2018 when Meunier 

and legendary local trail builder Dave Sutton began scouting 

missions in the Merry Creek area. Once a line was chosen 

and volunteer David J. Hall helped secure funding to hire a crew 

specifically for trail construction, work started on what would 

become the 4.4 kilometre downhill trail and accompanying 

upward traverse. The intensive project was led by Meunier with 

trail crew members Evan Dux, Jason Carmichael, Jack Allen and 

Clarke Morris. The effort has paid off with the Trailforks recognition 

that also includes top trails in locations from Whistler to 

Vermont and New Zealand to Czech Republic. 

“Captain Kangaroo isn’t just a trail—it’s a rite of passage,” states 

the Trailforks website. “Its flawless flow and ridiculously smooth

sections make it a trail masterpiece that showcases jaw-dropping 

alpine views along the way—that is, if you can even tear your 

eyes away from the trail.” 

Quick to give credit to all the paid crew and volunteer team 

that helped make Captain Kangaroo a reality, Meunier says there 

was literally a labour of love element to the creation of the trail. 

Meunier and Sutton began a romantic relationship seven years 

ago, spending “date outings” in area forests working on trails and 

enjoying the outdoors. 

“It’s been pretty cool to work with Dave,” says Meunier, who 

is a heli-ski guide and volunteer ski patrol during the winter 

months. “He is a very talented mountain biker who started building 

trails at a very young age. He saw that Nelson and Rossland 

had all these trails, so he took it upon himself to start building 

more trails in Castlegar. His vision and initial leadership really 

helped build the mountain biking scene in Castlegar. It took us a 

long time to just have enough quality to be even be considered a 

mountain biking destination.” 

Building and maintaining trail systems requires a massive 

amount of work behind the scenes. In her role as executive director, 

Meunier carries out a variety of tasks from GPS mapping 

and grant writing to negotiations with private land owners and 

government to ecosystem knowledge and surveying. For this, 

Meunier is grateful for the education she received in the twoyear 

Recreation, Fish & Wildlife Program. 

“I have always enjoyed school, as long as I am interested in 

the topic,” says Meunier, who is originally from Quebec and first 

came west for snowboarding in the Rockies. “The program was 

amazing with great instructors and practical skills in the field. 

It was more than absorbing information, getting to practice the 

skills was very valuable and the way I prefer to learn.” 

Now that Meunier has helped land Captain Kangaroo atop the 

world, she is both excited and cautious about the future. With 

responsible land stewardship serving as a foundation, she will 

guide CPTS enthusiastically into its next chapter. 

“What we lack in quantity compared to some other locations 

in our region, we definitely have in quality,” she says. “We have 

some very passionate and talented people in our community that 

consistently show up to help develop and maintain these trails. 

I’m pleased that more people will get to discover Castlegar and 

all the amazing recreation that is available here.”

The origins of Valentine’s Day are not entirely clear, and the 

holiday has evolved over centuries with various cultural and
