It’s a spot where sweet meets savory. Along with Glazed Crullers and Chocolate Long Johns, customers can get falafels, gyros and burgers. “When people first come here, they don’t know what to think. Falafels aren’t what one expects to see in a donut shop,” said Sweet Spot Café owner Mario Badra. Badra learned how to make donuts in his parents’ donut shop. He also learned treasured family recipes for Falafels, Hummus Dip and Baba Ghanoush. He admits some people thought he was nuts when he started selling falafels and gyros in his donut shop. But the concept worked and customers love it. “When my parents started out with a donut shop in the late 1970s and early ‘80s, a donut shop was just a donut shop. Last July, he opened an O’Fallon location. Similar to the original, the O’Fallon Sweet Spot features display cases filled with freshly baked donuts, pastries and muffins, plus a cozy dining area with limited seating. When the weather warms, there’s also a patio. Above the counter is the menu board, which showcases the savory selections available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. “I didn’t want to be just opened in the morning. I wanted to be versatile, so I could be open throughout the day,” Badra said. “I also wanted to provide my customers with more – a one-stop shop where they could have their savory and their sweet. The café does that. You can stop for a donut and espresso; get a donut or carry out donuts by the dozen; or grab a gyro, a burger, or falafel – whatever you like. Then, get a donut for dessert.” On the donut side, you can get classic yeast-raised and cake donuts as well as pastries and the Fried Croissant, think of it as the love child of a puff pastry and a donut. It’s a flaky-on-theoutside and soft-on-the-inside decadent treat that is definitely worth the calories. Looking for something other than a donut for breakfast? How about a three-egg omelet, pancakes, breakfast burrito, or breakfast sandwich? Diners with heartier appetites can dig into the Country Fried Steak Platter or Biscuits and Gravy. “We’re heavy on the café side,” Badra said, noting that on the lunch and dinner side, sandwiches and burgers are standouts, especially the gyros. There are a dozen different burgers to choose from, including a Turkey Burger and a Glazed Donut Cheese Burger, of course. “Our burgers use fresh beef and are dressed with veggies that are cut fresh every day. Nothing is frozen. And just like our donuts, our burgers and everything else are made fresh from scratch.” That includes the house-made Baba Ghanoush, which is available as a vegetarian main dish or a side. The fries and onion rings are great, but the baba ghanoush, with its smoked eggplant, tahini, olive oil, lemon juice and garlic, is the taste of the Mediterranean that makes Sweet Spot Café truly unique.
