and partnerships for its 17th<br />

edition, which will take place at Mad<strong>in</strong>at Jumeirah,<br />

Dubai from 1 to 3 March, (previews<br />

on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 <strong>February</strong>).<br />

Art Dubai’s <strong>2024</strong> will feature an expanded<br />

programme of collaborations with local and<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational partners, underscor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fair’s<br />

position as <strong>the</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t for <strong>the</strong> Global<br />

South’s creative communities and its mission<br />

to redef<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> role an art fair can play <strong>in</strong><br />

support<strong>in</strong>g local and regional ecosystems.<br />

Programme highlights will <strong>in</strong>clude major new<br />

floods, droughts and storms to smog - is no<br />

collection for <strong>the</strong> city of Dubai. Art Dubai<br />

Modern Talks will highlight <strong>the</strong> artistic l<strong>in</strong>ks<br />

made possible by Soviet geopolitics of <strong>the</strong><br />

Cold War, shift<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> focus from Western<br />

metropoles and focus<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> conversations<br />

on <strong>the</strong> impact of Soviet education and exhibitions<br />

on artists from <strong>the</strong> Middle East, South<br />

Asia, and Africa. Though <strong>the</strong>se East-East<br />

and South-South networks may no longer be<br />

obvious today, <strong>the</strong>y were critical to <strong>the</strong> formation<br />

of modern art <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region. Br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r a culturally diverse group of curators,<br />

scholars, and gallerists, each panel will<br />

highlight <strong>the</strong> personal stories of <strong>the</strong> artists<br />

represented <strong>in</strong> Art Dubai Modern. They will<br />

also provide historical context to <strong>the</strong> unique<br />

group<strong>in</strong>g of artists <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> section, reveal<strong>in</strong>g<br />

why <strong>the</strong>se works rema<strong>in</strong> valuable and relevant<br />

to audiences, collectors, and <strong>in</strong>stitutions.<br />

Individual and <strong>in</strong>stitutional collectors<br />

Re<strong>in</strong>forc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fair’s longstand<strong>in</strong>g commitment<br />

to education, professional development<br />

and thought-leadership will be <strong>the</strong><br />

largest-ever programme of talks, workshops<br />

and events, tak<strong>in</strong>g place across all five days<br />

of <strong>the</strong> fair.<br />

The A.R.M. Hold<strong>in</strong>g Children’s Programme<br />

is now <strong>in</strong> its fourth year and <strong>the</strong> <strong>2024</strong> edition<br />

will be <strong>the</strong> largest to date, reach<strong>in</strong>g more<br />

than 15,000 students <strong>in</strong> over 100 schools <strong>in</strong><br />

what is <strong>the</strong> most ambitious such education<br />

programme <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE. Each year, an artist<br />

is selected to develop <strong>the</strong> workshops, which<br />

beg<strong>in</strong> at Art Dubai before expand<strong>in</strong>g to private,<br />

government, and special educational<br />

needs schools across all seven Emirates.<br />

Goa-based artist Sahil Naik has been selected<br />

to develop <strong>the</strong> <strong>2024</strong> programme and<br />

his sculptural, architectural and arts education-based<br />

practice will take participants<br />

feature a series of new performances, films<br />

Art Dubai’s Bawwaba gallery section, and<br />

explore various aspects of <strong>the</strong> heal<strong>in</strong>g process,<br />

creat<strong>in</strong>g spaces for contemplation and<br />

The Swiss Wealth Management Group Julius<br />

Baer, lead partner of Art Dubai will present<br />

a newly commissioned digital <strong>in</strong>stallation<br />

by Canadian-Korean artist Krista Kim. ‘Heart<br />

<strong>Space</strong>’ is an immersive experience that will<br />

allow guests to connect with one ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

through <strong>the</strong> universal language of <strong>the</strong> human<br />

heartbeat. In real-time, each visitor’s unique<br />

heart rhythm will be visualised through<br />

hypnotic patterns and meditative shapes<br />

displayed across a dynamic LED canvas.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>stallation puts forward <strong>the</strong> concept of<br />

‘oneness’ where participants come toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

to create a social fabric harness<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> power<br />

of art and technology. Heart <strong>Space</strong> is a<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>uation of Kim’s ongo<strong>in</strong>g exploration<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> creative potential of screens as digital<br />

<strong>in</strong>struments of wellbe<strong>in</strong>g and longevity,<br />

and is part of Julius Baer’s NEXT universe,<br />

which explores <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>the</strong>matics around<br />

<strong>the</strong> emergence of megatrends across arts,<br />

science, and technology. This is <strong>the</strong> second<br />

major digital commission by Julius Baer to<br />

Inloco Initiative has set <strong>the</strong> stage for a<br />

revolutionary art representation with <strong>the</strong><br />

grand open<strong>in</strong>g of Inloco Storage <strong>in</strong> Dubai.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>augural event <strong>in</strong>troduces an entirely<br />

novel form of artistic expression, headl<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> first solo exhibition <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE by contemporary<br />

artist Filippo M<strong>in</strong>elli, titled “The<br />

Idealised City.”<br />

M<strong>in</strong>elli’s avant-garde approach, rooted <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> concept of art <strong>in</strong>tervention, promises a<br />

profound exploration of urban and cultural<br />

transformations that shape identity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

post-globalization era. Draw<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>spiration<br />

from a culm<strong>in</strong>ation of experiences work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

rapidly evolv<strong>in</strong>g landscapes worldwide, M<strong>in</strong>elli<br />

crystallized his vision after <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>sightful<br />

Inloco Talks 2023. This event brought<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r urbanists, architects, curators, and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r professionals, provid<strong>in</strong>g M<strong>in</strong>elli with a<br />

platform to deepen his understand<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>tersection between identity and space.<br />

“The subject came to me after work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

various cities on different cont<strong>in</strong>ents, which,<br />

like <strong>the</strong> place I was born, are rapidly chang<strong>in</strong>g<br />

landscapes that cont<strong>in</strong>ually remix references.<br />

However, I developed <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stallation<br />

after Inloco Talks 2023, where urbanists,<br />

architects, curators, and o<strong>the</strong>r professionals<br />

shared ideas about identity space and<br />

city-mak<strong>in</strong>g. It was a great opportunity to<br />

deepen my understand<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong>ir th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and f<strong>in</strong>d connections between it and my past<br />

research,” says Filippo M<strong>in</strong>elli.<br />

M<strong>in</strong>elli’s artistic practice challenges <strong>the</strong><br />

conventional construction and deconstruction<br />

of narratives that frame recognition. “The<br />

Idealised City” delves <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> role of architectural<br />

and urban elements <strong>in</strong> personal and<br />

collective self-formation with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context of<br />

our globalized world. The exhibition draws<br />

on historical perspectives, juxtapos<strong>in</strong>g Leon<br />

Battista Alberti’s Renaissance ‘Ideal City’<br />

with Al-Farabi’s ‘Virtuous City’ (Mad<strong>in</strong>at al-<br />

Fadilah), explor<strong>in</strong>g modern urbanism and its<br />

departure from past models.<br />

Influential figures such as Khaled Al Alawadi,<br />

Associate Professor of Susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />

Urbanism at Khalifa University, and George<br />

Katodrytis, Professor of Architecture at <strong>the</strong><br />

American University of Sharjah, <strong>in</strong>spired Inloco<br />

Talks 2023. They explored Dubai’s dynamic<br />

landscape, transformative power, and<br />

leadership <strong>in</strong> shap<strong>in</strong>g modern cityscapes.<br />

“The Idealised City” confronts <strong>the</strong> homogeneity<br />

prevalent <strong>in</strong> urban development<br />

globally, contrast<strong>in</strong>g it with <strong>the</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>ct cultural<br />

and historical identities of ancient city<br />

centers, now relegated to tourist attractions.<br />

This stark dichotomy forms <strong>the</strong> foundation<br />

for question<strong>in</strong>g contemporary <strong>in</strong>terpretations<br />

of ‘au<strong>the</strong>nticity’ and ‘collective identity.’<br />

M<strong>in</strong>elli’s exhibition also reflects on <strong>the</strong> profound<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence of Bedou<strong>in</strong> traditions and<br />

nomadic practices <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gulf Region’s urban<br />

development. These elements emerge<br />

as alternative perspectives to traditional<br />

preservation methods, enrich<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> contemporary<br />

landscape.<br />

Through <strong>the</strong> medium of photography, video,<br />

and <strong>in</strong>stallation art, Filippo M<strong>in</strong>elli crafts<br />

an immersive environment that seamlessly<br />

Q.Your upcom<strong>in</strong>g exhibition, “Before Nature (I Am Both Created<br />

and Destroyed),” draws <strong>in</strong>spiration from Dubai’s natural<br />

materials. Can you delve <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> specific aspects of <strong>the</strong><br />

land’s tapestry that have <strong>in</strong>fluenced your work, and how do<br />

you explore <strong>the</strong> ancient tales concealed with<strong>in</strong> its golden<br />

dunes?<br />

Dubai is well-known for its modern metropolis but I wanted to<br />

explore and unearth <strong>the</strong> landscape which envelops and lies beneath<br />

<strong>the</strong> city, to discover and connect with <strong>the</strong> deeper history<br />

of this place. For me this <strong>in</strong>vestigation is a means of connect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with our ancestors – <strong>the</strong> humans who lived and navigated this<br />

terra<strong>in</strong> over millennia, but also <strong>the</strong> stones, soil, and sand which<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir bodies <strong>in</strong>evitably merged with. When I create a rubb<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from stone, it is a means of <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g myself to <strong>the</strong> physical<br />

place – a k<strong>in</strong>d of ask<strong>in</strong>g permission to create an artwork from<br />

it. When I’m ready to beg<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> work emerges pretty quickly, as<br />

<strong>the</strong> earth and I collaborate to create it. The four “Translations”<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> this exhibition were created from four dist<strong>in</strong>ct stone<br />

formations which protruded out of <strong>the</strong> gravel and sand <strong>in</strong> Wadi<br />

Shawka.<br />

Q.The pieces “Small Monuments (2023)” <strong>in</strong>volve stones from<br />

significant global locations. How does your artistic process<br />

change when work<strong>in</strong>g with stones from different parts of <strong>the</strong><br />

world, and what message or narrative are you aim<strong>in</strong>g to convey<br />

through this exploration?<br />

Regardless of where I am <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, I always start by ask<strong>in</strong>g<br />

permission of <strong>the</strong> stones which I’m drawn to. If it feels will<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

collaborate with me, I br<strong>in</strong>g it <strong>in</strong>to my studio and study it fur<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

Each stone has a face, a will, and an <strong>in</strong>dividuality, and upon<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g it, I’m able to understand how best to work with it. I always<br />

beg<strong>in</strong> by ask<strong>in</strong>g myself - ‘what is <strong>the</strong> smallest action I can<br />

take to best reta<strong>in</strong> or express its true essence?’ Some sculptures<br />

take years to fully realize, and o<strong>the</strong>rs take hours – perhaps some<br />

stones are shy and o<strong>the</strong>rs are gregarious.<br />

I aim to communicate two ma<strong>in</strong> ideas –<br />

1. That everyth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this world exists <strong>in</strong> a constant state of<br />

change. “Th<strong>in</strong>gs” as we know <strong>the</strong>m are more like events.<br />

Ie. even a stone, a symbol of permanence, is a process of<br />

m<strong>in</strong>erals slowly erod<strong>in</strong>g over millions of years. By understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and embrac<strong>in</strong>g this impermanence, I hope to better<br />

accept my own mortality.<br />

2. Humans have gotten used to controll<strong>in</strong>g and shap<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

world to suit our needs. I choose to shape my materials accord<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to <strong>the</strong>ir personalities, ra<strong>the</strong>r than impos<strong>in</strong>g my will<br />

as <strong>the</strong> artist. Thus, my sculptures are are asymmetrical and<br />

organic. Even my measured, straight marks are irregular<br />

upon close <strong>in</strong>spection. Michelangelo saw <strong>the</strong> angel hidden<br />

<strong>in</strong> his block of marble, but I see <strong>the</strong> story of <strong>the</strong> stone’s violent<br />

creation, and millenia of stillness. My process of mark<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and form<strong>in</strong>g each stone <strong>in</strong>tegrates its spoken memories<br />

of <strong>the</strong>se moments.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> symbolic “Small Monuments (2023)” crafted from stones worldwide<br />

to <strong>the</strong> evocative “Ra<strong>in</strong> Pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs (2023)” captur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> essence of<br />

childhood memories, each piece is a collaboration between <strong>the</strong> artist and<br />

In <strong>the</strong> sculpture “Unbroken Column (2023),” Samimi pays homage to ancient<br />

structures, question<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> endurance of contemporary aspirations<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> backdrop of Dubai’s modernity. Guided by Zen Buddhism and<br />

Sufi Mysticism, his artistic process delves <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> relationships and tensions<br />

between human and non-human ancestors, creat<strong>in</strong>g a profound and<br />

Q.”Ra<strong>in</strong> Pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs (2023)” is described as a poetic homage to<br />

your childhood <strong>in</strong> rural Hawai’i. Could you share more about<br />

how <strong>the</strong>se artworks capture <strong>the</strong> essence of nightly ra<strong>in</strong> and<br />

its significance dur<strong>in</strong>g challeng<strong>in</strong>g times? How does personal<br />

experience weave <strong>in</strong>to your artistic narratives?<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g traumatic times , <strong>the</strong> sound of <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>fall was a lullaby<br />

and source of comfort, wash<strong>in</strong>g away <strong>the</strong> darkness of this world.<br />

Even now, I often return to my memories of <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>. Each of<br />

<strong>the</strong>se pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs recall a different aspect of <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>, embody<strong>in</strong>g<br />

its many forms and expressions, and each has been left out <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong> at some po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> its creation. Thus, <strong>the</strong>y are a collaboration<br />

with <strong>the</strong> very force which <strong>in</strong>spired <strong>the</strong>m, shaped both by<br />

my hands and those of Nature. In <strong>the</strong> early days of plann<strong>in</strong>g this<br />

exhibition, my first thought was to share some of Hawaii’s ra<strong>in</strong> –<br />

my ra<strong>in</strong>– with <strong>the</strong> desert.<br />

All of my work i make is deeply personal and I f<strong>in</strong>d by delv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>se memories, I’m able to access truths and concepts that<br />

are universal. Each work is a k<strong>in</strong>d of memento mori, conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

my emotional space which surrounded its creation, as well as<br />

expressions of my life on this planet.<br />

Q.The sculpture “Unbroken Column (2023)” is crafted from<br />

limestone segments, pay<strong>in</strong>g tribute to ancient religious<br />

structures <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region. What symbolism does this sculpture<br />

carry, especially <strong>in</strong> juxtaposition to Dubai’s modernity,<br />

and how does it reflect <strong>the</strong> connection between ancient traditions<br />

and contemporary aspirations?<br />

This sculpture was conceived when I saw an image of a s<strong>in</strong>gle<br />

column stand<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> 2500 yr old ru<strong>in</strong>s of Pasargade, <strong>the</strong><br />

palace of K<strong>in</strong>g Cyrus <strong>in</strong> Iran. I’ve never been to <strong>the</strong> country of<br />

my fa<strong>the</strong>r’s birth, but I’ve always been fasc<strong>in</strong>ated with its history<br />

and ru<strong>in</strong>s. Just as ancient peoples created monuments which<br />

commemorate <strong>the</strong>ir story on this earth and <strong>the</strong>ir spiritual beliefs.<br />

I created a tribute to my own. It is both a pillar which unites heaven<br />

and earth, and a means of spiritual transmission to my ancestors<br />

from <strong>the</strong> region and beyond. I don’t speak <strong>the</strong> language of<br />

my ancestors, but this monument is carved with many marks, a<br />

wordless prayer offered to <strong>the</strong>m. In <strong>the</strong> midst of Dubai’s modern<br />

architecture devoted to commerce and progress, it is crucial we<br />

reach back <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> past and honor <strong>the</strong> people who walked this<br />

earth long before us, but also realize that all civilizations eventually<br />

crumble. It provokes <strong>the</strong> question: <strong>in</strong> 2500 years, what will<br />

rema<strong>in</strong> of this modern city?<br />

As I worked on this sculpture I recalled Omar Khayyam’s poem<br />

on impermanence: ““The Worldly Hope men set <strong>the</strong>ir Hearts<br />

upon Turns Ashes--or it prospers; and anon, Like Snow upon <strong>the</strong><br />

Desert’s dusty Face Light<strong>in</strong>g a little Hour or two--is gone.”<br />

Zen Buddhism and Sufi Mysticism. How do <strong>the</strong>se philosophical<br />

foundations shape your approach to creat<strong>in</strong>g art, particularly<br />

<strong>in</strong> terms of <strong>the</strong> relationships and tensions between<br />

human and non-human ancestors?<br />

The most essential part of my practice is those moments of<br />

deep concentration when <strong>the</strong> artist Kamran Samimi dissolves.<br />

It is <strong>the</strong>se brief seconds, m<strong>in</strong>utes which save me, help<strong>in</strong>g me to<br />

cope with <strong>the</strong> constant barrage of suffer<strong>in</strong>g which fills this earth.<br />

Zen and Sufism both emphasize a direct experience with Nature<br />

and God, and this is what I seek when I work, a k<strong>in</strong>d of merg<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with my materials and a space of solace. As <strong>the</strong> zen say<strong>in</strong>g<br />

goes: “When you do someth<strong>in</strong>g, burn yourself up completely,<br />

leav<strong>in</strong>g no trace of yourself.”<br />

Additionally, each of <strong>the</strong>se traditions present a view of reality <strong>in</strong><br />

which <strong>the</strong>re is no separation between th<strong>in</strong>gs, a worldview which<br />

I have also gleaned from <strong>in</strong>digenous cultures throughout my life<br />

<strong>in</strong> Hawai’i. I see <strong>the</strong> source of all of my materials -both <strong>the</strong> raw<br />

and manufactured - as extend<strong>in</strong>g from nature. When one spends<br />

quiet time observ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> natural world, it becomes very clear<br />

how <strong>in</strong>extricably l<strong>in</strong>ked each of us is with <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d, <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong><br />

soil, and of course, <strong>the</strong> stones.<br />

a stunn<strong>in</strong>g transformation under <strong>the</strong><br />

skilled hands of artist Rubab Zahra. Zahra,<br />

renowned for her mastery <strong>in</strong> Arabic calligraphy,<br />

<strong>in</strong>tricately adorned <strong>the</strong> vehicle with<br />

phrases like “Drive your Senses” and “Start<br />

a new Journey,” captur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> essence of<br />

Bestune’s design philosophy.<br />

Add<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> artistic fervour was a live<br />

mural pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g by <strong>the</strong> exceptionally talented<br />

stands as a poignant portrayal commissioned by Sir Henry Tate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> late 19th century. This article delves <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

wife, Amy Hislop, <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g reflects <strong>the</strong><br />

Victorian ethos of express<strong>in</strong>g sentiment<br />

through art. Tate, a man of accomplishment,<br />

would have undoubtedly cherished <strong>the</strong><br />

hub <strong>in</strong> Dubai’s newest cultural district<br />

<strong>in</strong> Al Quoz 1, transports visitors through<br />

<strong>the</strong> pages of history and lets <strong>the</strong>m step <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>the</strong> world of ancient Egypt <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first-ever<br />

immersive show to tell <strong>the</strong> story of Hatshepsut,<br />

<strong>the</strong> first female pharaoh of <strong>the</strong> empire.<br />

This extraord<strong>in</strong>ary visual experience, on<br />

show until 18 <strong>February</strong>, blends historical<br />

facts with mesmeriz<strong>in</strong>g storytell<strong>in</strong>g and flies<br />

us back more than 3000 years. Hatshepsut,<br />

datasets of ocean life by talented media artist<br />

its historical roots to become a global<br />

celebration of love, affection, and<br />

connection. While <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>s of this romantic<br />

holiday are shrouded <strong>in</strong> legend and myth, its<br />

contemporary significance is unmistakable:<br />

a day dedicated to express<strong>in</strong>g love, cherish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

relationships, and celebrat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> human<br />

heart’s myriad emotions.<br />

Historically, Valent<strong>in</strong>e’s Day traces its l<strong>in</strong>eage<br />

to ancient Rome, where mid-<strong>February</strong><br />

marked <strong>the</strong> Lupercalia festival—a pagan<br />

celebration of fertility. As Christianity spread,<br />

<strong>the</strong> holiday underwent a transformation, with<br />

St. Valent<strong>in</strong>e emerg<strong>in</strong>g as its central figure.<br />

Legend has it that Valent<strong>in</strong>e, a Roman priest,<br />

defied Emperor Claudius II’s decree prohibit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

young men from marry<strong>in</strong>g, believ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle men made better soldiers. For his<br />

defiance, Valent<strong>in</strong>e was martyred, and his<br />

feast day was set for <strong>February</strong> 14th. Over<br />

time, <strong>the</strong> celebration evolved from religious<br />

observance to a more secular, yet deeply romantic,<br />

occasion.<br />

Today, Valent<strong>in</strong>e’s Day is synonymous with<br />

tokens of affection—heart-shaped chocolates,<br />

fragrant roses, and sentimental cards.<br />

It’s a day when lovers exchange gifts, share<br />

<strong>in</strong>timate d<strong>in</strong>ners, and create memories that<br />

delve deeper <strong>in</strong>to how <strong>the</strong> narrative of Jorge A., <strong>the</strong> Guatemalan<br />

farmer, and landscapes affected by climate change <strong>in</strong>fluenced<br />

your artistic exploration <strong>in</strong> this body of work?<br />

The story was an anchor for my artistic exploration. I wanted to<br />

highlight both <strong>the</strong> light and <strong>the</strong> dark. But, more importantly, <strong>the</strong><br />

journey of resilience and strength. The landscapes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pieces<br />

are a powerful metaphor for <strong>the</strong> wider shifts happen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> our<br />

world. In “Fly Like Dandelions,” I wanted to capture <strong>the</strong>se devastation<br />

and hope, aim<strong>in</strong>g to make people feel, understand, and<br />

appreciate <strong>the</strong> human spirit <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> face of adversity.<br />

Q.Your work merges traditional calligraphy techniques with<br />

abstraction, us<strong>in</strong>g Persian characters to depict trees and tree<br />

trunks. How does this fusion allow you to delve <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> complexities<br />

of perception, reality, and mean<strong>in</strong>g, especially <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

context of climate change’s impact on landscapes?<br />

The use of Persian characters adds cultural depth, symboliz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> connection between language and nature. By portray<strong>in</strong>g<br />

trees through this lens, I am try<strong>in</strong>g to highlight <strong>the</strong> vulnerability of<br />

ecosystems affected by climate change. The <strong>in</strong>terplay between<br />

traditional script and abstract representation allows for reflection<br />

on <strong>the</strong> evolv<strong>in</strong>g relationship between humans and <strong>the</strong> environment,<br />

meets to observe World Cancer Day.<br />

It’s a poignant rem<strong>in</strong>der of <strong>the</strong> global<br />

impact of cancer and <strong>the</strong> collective<br />

effort required to combat this pervasive disease.<br />

Initiated by <strong>the</strong> Union for International<br />

Cancer Control (UICC) and supported by<br />

organizations, governments, and <strong>in</strong>dividuals<br />

worldwide, this day serves as a platform to<br />

raise awareness, encourage prevention, and<br />

promote early detection and treatment.<br />

Cancer knows no boundaries; it affects<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividuals regardless of age, gender, ethnicity,<br />

or socioeconomic status. The statistics<br />

are stagger<strong>in</strong>g. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> World<br />

Health Organization, cancer is <strong>the</strong> second<br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g cause of death globally, account<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for nearly 10 million deaths <strong>in</strong> 2020 alone.<br />

Beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>se numbers lie countless stories<br />

of pa<strong>in</strong>, resilience, hope, and loss.<br />

The <strong>the</strong>me for World Cancer Day often<br />

posed by cancer. Whe<strong>the</strong>r it’s highlight<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> importance of early detection, ad-<br />

vocat<strong>in</strong>g for equitable access to treatment,<br />

or emphasiz<strong>in</strong>g prevention through healthy<br />

lifestyles and vacc<strong>in</strong>ation, each <strong>the</strong>me underscores<br />

QUOZ ARTS FEST <strong>2024</strong>:<br />

11th Edition saw a weekend of over 200 cultural activations and live<br />

music performances from morn<strong>in</strong>g to midnight<br />

More than 35,000 visitors of all ages<br />

and from all walks of life attended<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>2024</strong> edition of Quoz Arts Fest,<br />

<strong>the</strong> region’s highly anticipated arts<br />

and culture festival. The 11th edition, supported<br />

by Dubai Culture and Arts Authority<br />

(Dubai Culture) as Strategic Partner, took<br />

place on 27 & 28 January, transform<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

lanes of Alserkal Avenue and <strong>the</strong> Al Quoz<br />

<strong>Creative</strong> Zone <strong>in</strong>to a bustl<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>clusive<br />

hive of arts, culture, food and music.<br />

Quoz Arts Fest <strong>2024</strong> featured more than<br />

30 live performances, 16 art exhibitions, 9<br />

art <strong>in</strong>stallations, over 75 food and retail concepts,<br />

and numerous community activations<br />

and workshops, from morn<strong>in</strong>g till midnight,<br />

creat<strong>in</strong>g an emotionally resonant festival experience<br />

for everyone. S<strong>in</strong>ce its <strong>in</strong>ception<br />

London-based Japanese artist Yuri Suzuki,<br />

sound <strong>in</strong>stallation. Basma Choir’s mesmeris<strong>in</strong>g<br />

celebration of Arabic music and heritage<br />

<strong>in</strong> response to Suzuki’s ambient sound<br />

<strong>in</strong>stallation was much-loved by attendees,<br />

draw<strong>in</strong>g a crowd for each of <strong>the</strong>ir hourly performances.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r popular standout work at Quoz<br />

Arts Fest <strong>2024</strong> was <strong>the</strong> light <strong>in</strong>stallation Still<br />

from knowledge possessed by nomadic<br />

Bedou<strong>in</strong>s and orig<strong>in</strong>ally commissioned for<br />

of a car <strong>in</strong>to a sonic sculpture through a<br />

site-specific spoken word performance, also<br />

a pioneer<strong>in</strong>g force <strong>in</strong> Arab contemporary<br />

dance, put on a visually stunn<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

Music with Passion & Purpose<br />

In <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g, crowds were brought to<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir feet by Sudanese fusion artists MarSimba’s<br />

blend of Sudanese l<strong>in</strong>go and African<br />

beats, and <strong>the</strong> remixed South Asian DJ sets<br />

of UAE-based Stick No Bills, who was accompanied<br />

by musicians play<strong>in</strong>g traditional<br />

South Asian <strong>in</strong>struments such as <strong>the</strong> sitar,<br />

tabla, and harmonium. Festival-goers were<br />

<strong>in</strong> awe of millennial artist Usha Jey’s hybrid<br />

performance of hip-hop and Bharatanatyam<br />

ft. Mithu and Janu, while enthused by <strong>the</strong> return<br />

of Big Hass, a Dubai-based hip-hop DJ<br />

as emcee and show-runner.<br />

The second day of Quoz Arts Fest saw a<br />

huge turnout for <strong>the</strong> highly anticipated live<br />

music performances by The Synaptik and<br />

Friends, helmed by <strong>the</strong> Palest<strong>in</strong>ian-Jordanian<br />

rapper at <strong>the</strong> forefront of a popular wave<br />

of Arabic rap and trap, effortlessly merg<strong>in</strong>g<br />

s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g and rapp<strong>in</strong>g to explore issues such<br />

as migration and social <strong>in</strong>equality. His participation<br />

was <strong>in</strong>vigorated with performances<br />

by Maysa Daw, who captured <strong>the</strong> crowd with<br />

songs explor<strong>in</strong>g her personal experiences,<br />

as well as DJ Sotusura, Egyptian rapper<br />

Feluka, and pioneer of <strong>the</strong> ‘Amman sound’,<br />

Shbash.<br />

Quoz Encore, which has already become<br />

a ma<strong>in</strong>stay of <strong>the</strong> festival, returned for its<br />

sophomore cycle, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> more than<br />

80 entries by homegrown bands look<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for <strong>the</strong>ir big break. Twenty-four were shortlisted<br />

and auditioned, and twelve bands /<br />

musicians were f<strong>in</strong>ally selected to perform<br />

at Quoz Arts Fest this year. Quoz Encore<br />

has fast become a showcase of <strong>the</strong> most<br />

promis<strong>in</strong>g homegrown emerg<strong>in</strong>g musicians<br />

Hamra Abbas developed <strong>the</strong> concept “Every Color<br />

is a Shade of Black” over several years, start<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

‘Kaaba Picture as a Mispr<strong>in</strong>t’ (2014). Us<strong>in</strong>g cyan, magenta,<br />

and yellow (CMYK) to symbolize <strong>the</strong> Kaaba’s<br />

identity, she concluded that every color is a shade of<br />

black. This framework connects her work, explor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

color about faith, ideology, race, identity, desire, beauty,<br />

gender, and personal relationships. Abbas, tra<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>in</strong> sculpture and m<strong>in</strong>iature pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, resides between<br />

Boston and Islamabad. Her work has been exhibited<br />

globally, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> Victoria and Albert Museum<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Asia Society Triennial.<br />

and spirituality. Featur<strong>in</strong>g twelve artists<br />

and collectives, <strong>the</strong> exhibition transcends diverse<br />

contexts, reveal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> porous nature<br />

of urban and rural spaces. Gill <strong>in</strong>vites viewers<br />

to perceive ecology as a convergence<br />

of cultural, natural, and spiritual realms. The<br />

affected by climate change, J<strong>in</strong>chi uses Persian characters for “trees”<br />

to create fad<strong>in</strong>g depictions of tree trunks, merg<strong>in</strong>g traditional calligraphy with<br />

abstraction. Her color palette reflects devastation <strong>in</strong> black and grey, with blue<br />

embody<strong>in</strong>g hope. Dandelions, symboliz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> nuanced nature of migration,<br />

drift across <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs as calligraphic seed pods, represent<strong>in</strong>g resilient migrants<br />
