Hassan Sharif remains an indelible force within the realm of contemporary 

art, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate with profound 

impact and influence. Born on 1 January 1951 in the United Arab 

Emirates, Sharif’s artistic journey and intellectual contributions have solidified 

his reputation as a pivotal figure in the development and proliferation 

of conceptual art within the Gulf region. 

Based in Dubai, Sharif’s multifaceted 

practice encompassed a wide array 

of mediums, from sculpture and installation 

to performance and drawing. 

His innovative approach to artmaking 

transcended conventional boundaries, challenging 

established norms and redefining 

the parameters of artistic expression. Sharif’s 

unwavering commitment to experimentation 

and exploration earned him the title of 

“father of conceptual art in the Gulf,” a testament 

to his groundbreaking contributions 

and visionary perspective. 

In addition to his prolific artistic practice, 

Sharif was also a dedicated writer, articulating 

his thoughts, ideas, and philosophies 

with eloquence and insight. His writings 

provided invaluable insights into his creative 

process, offering readers and fellow artists 

a deeper understanding of his artistic vision 

and intellectual pursuits. 

Sharif’s enduring impact on the art world 

is further evidenced by the inclusion of his 

work in major public collections across the 

globe. Institutions such as the Guggenheim 

New York, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Centre 

Pompidou, Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern 

Art, Tate Modern, and Sharjah Art Foundation 

have recognized the significance of his 

contributions, preserving his artworks for 

future generations and ensuring his legacy 

endures. 

Through his founding of Al Marijah Art 

Atelier and his mentorship of emerging artists, 

Sharif played a pivotal role in shaping 

the artistic landscape of the United Arab 

Emirates. His dedication to fostering creativity, 

nurturing talent, and championing the 

transformative power of art has left an indelible 

mark on the cultural fabric of the region. 

Hassan Sharif’s life and work serve as a 

testament to the profound impact of artistic

boundless possibilities of artistic exploration

PROGRAMMES AND PARTNERSHIPS 

FOR 2024 EDITION

January 2024 – Art Dubai today 

announces details of the programming 

and partnerships for its 17th 

edition, which will take place at Madinat Jumeirah, 

Dubai from 1 to 3 March, (previews 

on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 February). 

Art Dubai’s 2024 will feature an expanded 

programme of collaborations with local and 

international partners, underscoring the fair’s 

position as the meeting point for the Global 

South’s creative communities and its mission 

to redefine the role an art fair can play in 

supporting local and regional ecosystems. 

Programme highlights will include major new 

commissions and premières by internationally 

renowned artists and the most extensive 

education, talks and thought-leadership programme 

of any international art fair. 

Since its founding, Art Dubai has been 

committed to working with institutional and 

commercial partners to develop new commissioning 

models and long-term innovative, 

high-impact cultural programming. These 

collaborations place particular emphasis on 

education and digital technologies, which 

are cornerstones of Art Dubai’s extensive 

year-round programming; they play a crucial 

role in shaping the future of Dubai’s cultural 

infrastructure, as well as responding to some 

of the most important issues of our time. 

Pablo del Val, Art Dubai’s Artistic Director 

commented:

Thought-leadership 

In the 21st century, extreme weather - from 

floods, droughts and storms to smog - is no 

longer limited to “the developing world,” 

but is now happening everywhere. Meanwhile, 

the threat of extinction elicits urgent 

innovations — and imagination. Over two 

days, Art Dubai’s flagship transdisciplinary 

summit the Global Art Forum will present 

the cultures, technologies, sciences and 

initiatives around extreme weather and extreme 

change with many of the world’s most 

compelling artists, architects, academics, 

curators, and thinkers. Entitled “Whether or 

Not,” Global Art Forum 17 is organised by 

Commissioner Shumon Basar and Curator 

Nadine El- Khoury, and will take place on 29 

February and 1 March 2024. Speakers contributing 

to the forum include Dr. Stephanie 

Rosenthal, Director, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, 

Samir Bantal, Director, AMO at Office of 

Metropolitan Architecture, Rotterdam, Anne 

Holtrop, Founder, Studio Anne Holtrop, Bahrain, 

Monira Al Qadiri, Artist, Kuwait and Berlin, 

Gabriel Alonso, Artist and Researcher, 

Madrid, amongst others. 

Supporting Art Dubai’s commitment to 

scholarship, Art Dubai Modern and Collector 

Talks are presented in partnership with 

Dubai Collection, the first institutional art 

collection for the city of Dubai. Art Dubai 

Modern Talks will highlight the artistic links 

made possible by Soviet geopolitics of the 

Cold War, shifting the focus from Western 

metropoles and focusing the conversations 

on the impact of Soviet education and exhibitions 

on artists from the Middle East, South 

Asia, and Africa. Though these East-East 

and South-South networks may no longer be 

obvious today, they were critical to the formation 

of modern art in the region. Bringing 

together a culturally diverse group of curators, 

scholars, and gallerists, each panel will 

highlight the personal stories of the artists 

represented in Art Dubai Modern. They will 

also provide historical context to the unique 

grouping of artists in the section, revealing 

why these works remain valuable and relevant 

to audiences, collectors, and institutions. 

Individual and institutional collectors 

are driving cultural shifts in emerging cultural 

centres. With a focus on topics including 

philanthropy, corporate support for the arts 

and institutional collecting, Art Dubai Collector 

Talks will shed light on the unique forces, 

strategies and passions that are shaping 

global arts and culture.

Education 

Reinforcing the fair’s longstanding commitment 

to education, professional development 

and thought-leadership will be the 

largest-ever programme of talks, workshops 

and events, taking place across all five days 

of the fair. 

The A.R.M. Holding Children’s Programme 

is now in its fourth year and the 2024 edition 

will be the largest to date, reaching more 

than 15,000 students in over 100 schools in 

what is the most ambitious such education 

programme in the UAE. Each year, an artist 

is selected to develop the workshops, which 

begin at Art Dubai before expanding to private, 

government, and special educational 

needs schools across all seven Emirates. 

Goa-based artist Sahil Naik has been selected 

to develop the 2024 programme and 

his sculptural, architectural and arts education-based 

practice will take participants 

on a journey through creation using dioramas, 

memory and the built environment as 

sources of inspiration. Centring on themes of 

ecology and nature, these workshops will invite 

children to explore the central question: 

“How do younger generations imagine future 

cities, and what they will comprise?” 

Aimed at nurturing emerging talent and 

future cultural leaders, the fair will continue 

to run Campus Art Dubai (CAD) professional 

development and traineeship programme. 

Celebrating its 11th year, the initiative is 

designed to provide recent graduates with 

mentorship, masterclasses and hands-on 

experience across diverse departments at 

the fair. Additionally, participants will benefit 

from curated tours of leading cultural organisations 

in the city, providing practical insights 

and a clear pathway for them to enter 

and thrive within the dynamic art scene. 


New Commissions 

This year’s Art Dubai Commissions will 

feature a series of new performances, films 

and activations focusing on topics of hope, 

community and the power of art to help us 

navigate challenging times. Complementing 

Art Dubai’s Bawwaba gallery section, and 

curated by Emiliano Valdes, participating 

artists hail from the Global South, and will 

explore various aspects of the healing process, 

creating spaces for contemplation and 

introspection, socially-oriented practices 

that engage with local communities as well 

as creating nurturing and liberating experiences. 

The Swiss Wealth Management Group Julius 

Baer, lead partner of Art Dubai will present 

a newly commissioned digital installation 

by Canadian-Korean artist Krista Kim. ‘Heart 

Space’ is an immersive experience that will 

allow guests to connect with one another 

through the universal language of the human 

heartbeat. In real-time, each visitor’s unique 

heart rhythm will be visualised through 

hypnotic patterns and meditative shapes 

displayed across a dynamic LED canvas. 

The installation puts forward the concept of 

‘oneness’ where participants come together 

to create a social fabric harnessing the power 

of art and technology. Heart Space is a 

continuation of Kim’s ongoing exploration 

into the creative potential of screens as digital 

instruments of wellbeing and longevity, 

and is part of Julius Baer’s NEXT universe, 

which explores investment thematics around 

the emergence of megatrends across arts, 

science, and technology. This is the second 

major digital commission by Julius Baer to 

debut at Art Dubai, following the acclaimed 

collaboration with Refik Anadol in 2023. 

Inaugurating a new partnership with Art 

Dubai, returning partner Piaget will debut 

a new exhibition ‘The House of Gold’ at Art 

Dubai 2024. Spotlighting gold as the ultimate 

luxury and a symbol of perfection, central to 

the brand’s philosophy, the presentation will 

showcase a series of high-end jewellery and 

watches, patrimony pieces and private collections 

in a bespoke booth featuring newly 

commissioned artworks, workshops and immersive 

experiences.

positions her as a trailblazer in the

distinguished alumna of Zayed University, 

where she majored in visual 

arts, Belhamar further honed her 

creative acumen at the prestigious 

Rhode Island School of Design, earning an 

MFA degree in textile design in 2017. Her 

educational journey provided her with a 

solid foundation in design principles, which 

she seamlessly integrates into her practice, 

creating captivating fabric and paper wall 

installations that engage viewers on both visual 

and tactile levels. 

Belhamar’s artistic oeuvre is characterized 

by a profound exploration of surface, 

pattern, and spatial dynamics. Her meticulous 

printing and projecting techniques 

breathe life into her creations, transforming 

two-dimensional designs into intricate 

three-dimensional structures that challenge 

perceptions and evoke a sense of wonder. 

Through her innovative use of materials and 

techniques, Belhamar invites viewers to reconsider 

their relationship with the built environment, 

prompting contemplation on the 

intersection of memory, identity, and space. 

Having exhibited extensively in the UAE 

since 2009, Belhamar’s work has garnered 

acclaim both locally and internationally. Her 

recent exhibitions at the 1stdibs gallery in 

New York and the Art: Process & Practice 

SEAF exhibition at Warehouse 421 in Abu

GROUNDBREAKING ARTISTIC 

ENDEAVOR IN DUBAI: INLOCO 

STORAGE PREMIERES WITH FILIPPO 

MINELLI’S “THE IDEALISED CITY” 

Inloco Initiative has set the stage for a 

revolutionary art representation with the 

grand opening of Inloco Storage in Dubai. 

The inaugural event introduces an entirely 

novel form of artistic expression, headlined 

by the first solo exhibition in the UAE by contemporary 

artist Filippo Minelli, titled “The 

Idealised City.” 

Minelli’s avant-garde approach, rooted in 

the concept of art intervention, promises a 

profound exploration of urban and cultural 

transformations that shape identity in the 

post-globalization era. Drawing inspiration 

from a culmination of experiences working in 

rapidly evolving landscapes worldwide, Minelli 

crystallized his vision after the insightful 

Inloco Talks 2023. This event brought 

together urbanists, architects, curators, and 

other professionals, providing Minelli with a 

platform to deepen his understanding of the 

intersection between identity and space. 

“The subject came to me after working in 

various cities on different continents, which, 

like the place I was born, are rapidly changing 

landscapes that continually remix references. 

However, I developed the installation 

after Inloco Talks 2023, where urbanists, 

architects, curators, and other professionals 

shared ideas about identity space and 

city-making. It was a great opportunity to 

deepen my understanding of their thinking 

and find connections between it and my past 

research,” says Filippo Minelli. 

Minelli’s artistic practice challenges the 

conventional construction and deconstruction 

of narratives that frame recognition. “The 

Idealised City” delves into the role of architectural 

and urban elements in personal and 

collective self-formation within the context of 

our globalized world. The exhibition draws 

on historical perspectives, juxtaposing Leon 

Battista Alberti’s Renaissance ‘Ideal City’ 

with Al-Farabi’s ‘Virtuous City’ (Madinat al- 

Fadilah), exploring modern urbanism and its 

departure from past models. 

Influential figures such as Khaled Al Alawadi, 

Associate Professor of Sustainable 

Urbanism at Khalifa University, and George 

Katodrytis, Professor of Architecture at the 

American University of Sharjah, inspired Inloco 

Talks 2023. They explored Dubai’s dynamic 

landscape, transformative power, and 

leadership in shaping modern cityscapes. 

“The Idealised City” confronts the homogeneity 

prevalent in urban development 

globally, contrasting it with the distinct cultural 

and historical identities of ancient city 

centers, now relegated to tourist attractions. 

This stark dichotomy forms the foundation 

for questioning contemporary interpretations 

of ‘authenticity’ and ‘collective identity.’ 

Minelli’s exhibition also reflects on the profound 

influence of Bedouin traditions and 

nomadic practices in the Gulf Region’s urban 

development. These elements emerge 

as alternative perspectives to traditional 

preservation methods, enriching the contemporary 

landscape. 

Through the medium of photography, video, 

and installation art, Filippo Minelli crafts 

an immersive environment that seamlessly 

extends into the digital realm. “The Idealised 

City” beckons viewers to engage with 

profound themes of introspection, authenticity, 

and the representation of reality in the 

ever-evolving digital age. Inloco Storage in 

Dubai is a testament to the convergence of 

art, urbanism, and cultural dialogue, setting 

a new benchmark for the global art scene.

CONVERSATIONS 

Q.Your upcoming exhibition, “Before Nature (I Am Both Created 

and Destroyed),” draws inspiration from Dubai’s natural 

materials. Can you delve into the specific aspects of the 

land’s tapestry that have influenced your work, and how do 

you explore the ancient tales concealed within its golden 

dunes? 

Dubai is well-known for its modern metropolis but I wanted to 

explore and unearth the landscape which envelops and lies beneath 

the city, to discover and connect with the deeper history 

of this place. For me this investigation is a means of connecting 

with our ancestors – the humans who lived and navigated this 

terrain over millennia, but also the stones, soil, and sand which 

their bodies inevitably merged with. When I create a rubbing 

from stone, it is a means of introducing myself to the physical 

place – a kind of asking permission to create an artwork from 

it. When I’m ready to begin, the work emerges pretty quickly, as 

the earth and I collaborate to create it. The four “Translations” 

paintings in this exhibition were created from four distinct stone 

formations which protruded out of the gravel and sand in Wadi 

Shawka. 

Q.The pieces “Small Monuments (2023)” involve stones from 

significant global locations. How does your artistic process 

change when working with stones from different parts of the 

world, and what message or narrative are you aiming to convey 

through this exploration? 

Regardless of where I am in the world, I always start by asking 

permission of the stones which I’m drawn to. If it feels willing to 

collaborate with me, I bring it into my studio and study it further. 

Each stone has a face, a will, and an individuality, and upon 

finding it, I’m able to understand how best to work with it. I always 

begin by asking myself - ‘what is the smallest action I can 

take to best retain or express its true essence?’ Some sculptures 

take years to fully realize, and others take hours – perhaps some 

stones are shy and others are gregarious. 

I aim to communicate two main ideas – 

1. That everything in this world exists in a constant state of 

change. “Things” as we know them are more like events. 

Ie. even a stone, a symbol of permanence, is a process of 

minerals slowly eroding over millions of years. By understanding 

and embracing this impermanence, I hope to better 

accept my own mortality. 

2. Humans have gotten used to controlling and shaping the 

world to suit our needs. I choose to shape my materials according 

to their personalities, rather than imposing my will 

as the artist. Thus, my sculptures are are asymmetrical and 

organic. Even my measured, straight marks are irregular 

upon close inspection. Michelangelo saw the angel hidden 

in his block of marble, but I see the story of the stone’s violent 

creation, and millenia of stillness. My process of marking 

and forming each stone integrates its spoken memories 

of these moments.

to the evocative “Rain Paintings (2023)” capturing the essence of 

childhood memories, each piece is a collaboration between the artist and 

the forces of nature. 

In the sculpture “Unbroken Column (2023),” Samimi pays homage to ancient 

structures, questioning the endurance of contemporary aspirations 

against the backdrop of Dubai’s modernity. Guided by Zen Buddhism and 

Sufi Mysticism, his artistic process delves into the relationships and tensions 

between human and non-human ancestors, creating a profound and 

immersive experience in this exhibition.

CONVERSATIONS 

Q.”Rain Paintings (2023)” is described as a poetic homage to 

your childhood in rural Hawai’i. Could you share more about 

how these artworks capture the essence of nightly rain and 

its significance during challenging times? How does personal 

experience weave into your artistic narratives? 

During traumatic times , the sound of the rainfall was a lullaby 

and source of comfort, washing away the darkness of this world. 

Even now, I often return to my memories of the rain. Each of 

these paintings recall a different aspect of the rain, embodying 

its many forms and expressions, and each has been left out in 

the rain at some point in its creation. Thus, they are a collaboration 

with the very force which inspired them, shaped both by 

my hands and those of Nature. In the early days of planning this 

exhibition, my first thought was to share some of Hawaii’s rain – 

my rain– with the desert. 

All of my work i make is deeply personal and I find by delving 

into these memories, I’m able to access truths and concepts that 

are universal. Each work is a kind of memento mori, containing 

my emotional space which surrounded its creation, as well as 

expressions of my life on this planet. 

Q.The sculpture “Unbroken Column (2023)” is crafted from 

limestone segments, paying tribute to ancient religious 

structures in the region. What symbolism does this sculpture 

carry, especially in juxtaposition to Dubai’s modernity, 

and how does it reflect the connection between ancient traditions 

and contemporary aspirations? 

This sculpture was conceived when I saw an image of a single 

column standing from the 2500 yr old ruins of Pasargade, the 

palace of King Cyrus in Iran. I’ve never been to the country of 

my father’s birth, but I’ve always been fascinated with its history 

and ruins. Just as ancient peoples created monuments which 

commemorate their story on this earth and their spiritual beliefs. 

I created a tribute to my own. It is both a pillar which unites heaven 

and earth, and a means of spiritual transmission to my ancestors 

from the region and beyond. I don’t speak the language of 

my ancestors, but this monument is carved with many marks, a 

wordless prayer offered to them. In the midst of Dubai’s modern 

architecture devoted to commerce and progress, it is crucial we 

reach back into the past and honor the people who walked this 

earth long before us, but also realize that all civilizations eventually 

crumble. It provokes the question: in 2500 years, what will 

remain of this modern city? 

As I worked on this sculpture I recalled Omar Khayyam’s poem 

on impermanence: ““The Worldly Hope men set their Hearts 

upon Turns Ashes--or it prospers; and anon, Like Snow upon the 

Desert’s dusty Face Lighting a little Hour or two--is gone.” 


Q.Your artistic process is described as being informed by 

Zen Buddhism and Sufi Mysticism. How do these philosophical 

foundations shape your approach to creating art, particularly 

in terms of the relationships and tensions between 

human and non-human ancestors? 

The most essential part of my practice is those moments of 

deep concentration when the artist Kamran Samimi dissolves. 

It is these brief seconds, minutes which save me, helping me to 

cope with the constant barrage of suffering which fills this earth. 

Zen and Sufism both emphasize a direct experience with Nature 

and God, and this is what I seek when I work, a kind of merging 

with my materials and a space of solace. As the zen saying 

goes: “When you do something, burn yourself up completely, 

leaving no trace of yourself.” 

Additionally, each of these traditions present a view of reality in 

which there is no separation between things, a worldview which 

I have also gleaned from indigenous cultures throughout my life 

in Hawai’i. I see the source of all of my materials -both the raw 

and manufactured - as extending from nature. When one spends 

quiet time observing the natural world, it becomes very clear 

how inextricably linked each of us is with the wind, the rain, the 

soil, and of course, the stones.

The iconic quote by Van Gogh, “There is 

nothing more truly artistic than to love people,” 

sets the stage for an exploration of the 

intersection between love and artistic creation. 

Love, a universal theme, has found its 

resonance in literature, paintings, and the 

lives of real-life artistic couples. Georges 

Polti’s “The Thirty-Six Dramatic Situations” 

attests to the centrality of love, with over half 

of the situations involving this profound emotion. 

Literature, a vast repository of human experiences,

ancient Greek mythology to Udmurt tales, 

the essence of love permeates through the 

pages of time. Pygmalion, Ovid’s narrative 

about a sculptor who falls in love with his

From being the first to mass-produce 

vehicles in China to achieving an annual 

production of over four million high-end cars, 

trucks, and buses, FAW has solidified its position 

as one of the world’s largest vehicle

stands as a poignant portrayal commissioned by Sir Henry Tate in the late 19th century. This article delves into the 

nuances of this masterpiece, exploring the historical context, artistic evolution, and the personal narratives that converged 

to create this intimate scene from the past. 

Set against the backdrop of the early 

Roman Empire, “A Foregone Conclusion” 

unfolds a narrative of courtship, 

portraying a man fervently offering 

an engagement ring to his beloved. 

Alma-Tadema’s meticulous attention to detail 

captures the expectant gaze of the lady 

and her attendant, subtly suggesting that 

the outcome of this proposal is already predetermined—a 

‘foregone conclusion.’ The 

artist’s exploration of Roman courtship rituals 

aligns with the societal norms prevalent 

during the depicted era. 

Historian Barrow contextualizes Alma-Tadema’s 

courtship scenes within the framework 

of Roman law and practice. During the 

depicted time, marriages among women of 

high birth often transpired at a young age, 

driven by political alliances and social advantages. 

Barrow notes that love interests 

frequently developed post-marriage through 

the acquisition of illicit lovers. While this historical 

insight enriches the interpretation, it 

is essential to recognize that Sir Henry Tate, 

the commissioner, likely saw the painting as 

a heartfelt tribute to his wife’s affection. 

Commissioned by the founder of the Tate 

Gallery, Sir Henry Tate, “A Foregone Conclusion” 

serves as a unique window into the 

personal life of this self-made businessman. 

Presented as a wedding gift to his second 

wife, Amy Hislop, the painting reflects the 

Victorian ethos of expressing sentiment 

through art. Tate, a man of accomplishment, 

would have undoubtedly cherished the 

painting as a symbol of his enduring love for 

Amy, who was 31 years his junior. The intimate 

scene depicted by Alma-Tadema becomes 

a testament to the timeless nature of 

love and commitment. 

Alma-Tadema’s oeuvre underwent a noticeable 

transformation over the years. While 

earlier works, such as “An Audience at 

Agrippa’s,” depicted grand historical events 

on a large scale, his later pieces, including 

“A Foregone Conclusion,” embraced smaller, 

domestic scenes. The shift in scale is 

accompanied by a departure from elaborate 

historical settings, with Alma-Tadema incorporating 

fewer statues and artifacts. Instead, 

he opts for a more intimate focus, often featuring 

a limited number of figures against a 

backdrop of sea and flowers—a departure 

from his earlier, more expansive compositions. 

Alma-Tadema’s frequent visits to Italy, 

particularly the ancient sites of Pompeii and 

Herculaneum, played a crucial role in shaping 

his artistic vision. The painter, who meticulously 

documented his journeys through 

photography, drew inspiration from the Italian 

landscape. “A Foregone Conclusion” 

bears witness to this influence, as Alma-Tadema 

recreates the Italian setting with the inclusion 

of figures seated on a marble bench, 

a semi-circular exedra, and the distant sea, 

adorned with vibrant flowers. 

By the time Alma-Tadema painted “A 

Foregone Conclusion,” he had ascended 

to prominence in the Victorian art world. 

Elected as a Royal Academician in 1879, 

his stature was further solidified with a major 

exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery three 

years later. This recognition paved the way 

for his enduring legacy, with Sir Henry Tate 

later commissioning another work, “A Silent 

Greeting,” as a companion piece to the celebrated 

“Foregone Conclusion.” 

“A Foregone Conclusion” by Alma-Tadema 

is not merely a canvas adorned with 

strokes of paint; it is a testament to the intersection 

of personal narratives, historical context, 

and artistic evolution. Sir Henry Tate’s 

commissioning of this work as a wedding 

present adds a layer of intimacy to the painting, 

while Alma-Tadema’s departure from 

grand historical scenes in favor of smaller,

The Hatshepsut experience reveals 

the untold story of the woman who 

would be king. In their newest experience, 

kanvas, the creative and immersive 

hub in Dubai’s newest cultural district 

in Al Quoz 1, transports visitors through 

the pages of history and lets them step into 

the world of ancient Egypt in the first-ever 

immersive show to tell the story of Hatshepsut, 

the first female pharaoh of the empire. 

This extraordinary visual experience, on 

show until 18 February, blends historical 

facts with mesmerizing storytelling and flies 

us back more than 3000 years. Hatshepsut, 

the audacious pharaoh queen, hailing from 

the celebrated Eighteenth Dynasty of ancient 

Egypt, defied conventions, dared to 

transcend traditional roles by stepping into 

the shoes of kings and thus left an indelible 

mark on the legacy of pharaohs. 

The ultimate goal of Ram Nath, the show’s 

producer was to introduce us to the once 

nearly erased legacy of this trailblazing pharaoh 

queen who has sculpted Egypt into an 

era of unprecedented prosperity in trade, 

culture and architecture. 

kanvas, the new media art and event hub 

in Al Khayat Art Avenue serves as the perfect 

backdrop for this extraordinary experience, 

a perfect fusion of entertainment and 

education that unravels the enigmatic saga 

of the queen who dared to be king. 

The groundbreaking Hathsepsut experience 

followed a series of exceptional artplugged-in 

exhibitions over the past year, 

embodying the core mission of kanvas: to 

become an integral player on the cultural 

canvas of the Middle East and bring innovative 

art forms closer to a broader audience. 

Building on the narratives of past experiences, 

their upcoming shows promise a visual 

feast for art enthusiasts. 

First in line is a retrospective solo exhibition 

of the visionary contemporary visual 

artist, Kristel Bechara titled “A Symphony 

of Shadows and Light” coinciding with Art 

Dubai, the region’s largest art fair. In her new 

vernissage, Bechara pushes her boundaries 

to embrace new dimensions of advanced 

technologies. 

That will be followed by a trailblazing 

data visualization project titled „What Lies 

Beneath” which delves into the mysterious 

depths of the oceans. The unprecedented 

visual experience, redesigned and upgraded 

for kanvas, is crafted from open-source 

datasets of ocean life by talented media artist 

and motion graphic designer, Susan Kosti. 

The original work was commissioned by 

NSW Destination for Vivid Sydney, one of the 

largest digital art festivals of the world.

Valentine’s Day celebrated annually 

on February 14th, has transcended 

its historical roots to become a global 

celebration of love, affection, and 

connection. While the origins of this romantic 

holiday are shrouded in legend and myth, its 

contemporary significance is unmistakable: 

a day dedicated to expressing love, cherishing 

relationships, and celebrating the human 

heart’s myriad emotions. 

Historically, Valentine’s Day traces its lineage 

to ancient Rome, where mid-February 

marked the Lupercalia festival—a pagan 

celebration of fertility. As Christianity spread, 

the holiday underwent a transformation, with 

St. Valentine emerging as its central figure. 

Legend has it that Valentine, a Roman priest, 

defied Emperor Claudius II’s decree prohibiting 

young men from marrying, believing 

single men made better soldiers. For his 

defiance, Valentine was martyred, and his 

feast day was set for February 14th. Over 

time, the celebration evolved from religious 

observance to a more secular, yet deeply romantic, 

occasion. 

Today, Valentine’s Day is synonymous with 

tokens of affection—heart-shaped chocolates, 

fragrant roses, and sentimental cards. 

It’s a day when lovers exchange gifts, share 

intimate dinners, and create memories that 

endure lifetimes. Yet, beyond the chocolates 

and roses lies a deeper essence: the celebration 

of love in all its forms. It’s a day that 

reminds us of the profound human need to 

connect, to feel cherished, and to express 

our deepest emotions unabashedly. 

However, as with any widely celebrated 

occasion, Valentine’s Day has its share of 

critics. Some argue it’s overly commercialized, 

reducing love to mere commodities. 

Others point out that love should be celebrated 

every day, not just on a designated 

date. While these critiques hold merit, 

the essence of Valentine’s Day transcends 

commercialism. At its core, it serves as a 

poignant reminder to pause amidst life’s 

hustle and reflect on the love that enriches 

our lives—be it romantic, platonic, or familial. 

Furthermore, Valentine’s Day has evolved 

beyond romantic love. In recent years, the 

concept of ‘Galentine’s Day’ has gained 

traction—a day preceding Valentine’s, where 

women celebrate their female friendships 

and empowerment. Similarly, ‘Palentine’s 

Day’ acknowledges the importance of platonic 

friendships, emphasizing that love isn’t 

confined to romantic partnerships. 

In essence, Valentine’s Day, with its rich 

tapestry of history and contemporary interpretations, 

remains a testament to love’s enduring 

power. It encourages us to celebrate 

connections, cherish memories, and above 

all, recognize love as the universal language 

that binds humanity. As we exchange tokens 

of affection and whisper sweet nothings, let’s 

also embrace the day’s deeper message: 

that love, in all its myriad forms, is truly the

affected by climate change, Jinchi merges Persian calligraphy with abstraction, symbolizing

for migrant experiences. Rooted in Mashhad, Iran, and with a background in civil engineering and 

classical calligraphy, Jinchi weaves personal and global narratives, offering a profound exploration of

Q.The series “Fly Like Dandelions” was inspired by the New 

York Times article on the Great Climate Migration. Could you 

delve deeper into how the narrative of Jorge A., the Guatemalan 

farmer, and landscapes affected by climate change influenced 

your artistic exploration in this body of work? 

The story was an anchor for my artistic exploration. I wanted to 

highlight both the light and the dark. But, more importantly, the 

journey of resilience and strength. The landscapes in the pieces 

are a powerful metaphor for the wider shifts happening in our 

world. In “Fly Like Dandelions,” I wanted to capture these devastation 

and hope, aiming to make people feel, understand, and 

appreciate the human spirit in the face of adversity. 

Q.Your work merges traditional calligraphy techniques with 

abstraction, using Persian characters to depict trees and tree 

trunks. How does this fusion allow you to delve into the complexities 

of perception, reality, and meaning, especially in the 

context of climate change’s impact on landscapes? 

The use of Persian characters adds cultural depth, symbolizing 

the connection between language and nature. By portraying 

trees through this lens, I am trying to highlight the vulnerability of 

ecosystems affected by climate change. The interplay between 

traditional script and abstract representation allows for reflection 

on the evolving relationship between humans and the environment, 

this helps the viewers contemplate the changing meanings 

embedded in the landscapes around us.

Q.The color palette in your paintings, particularly the use of 

black, grey, and blue, holds symbolic meaning. Could you 

explain how these colors express notions of devastation and 

hope within the context of your artistic narrative? 

Choosing these color palettes is second nature to me. The darker 

tones convey urgency and devastation, while blue adds hope 

and resilience. The dusty, muted dystopian tones in my paintings 

reflect the dark moments of our current climate crisis, symbolizing 

loss and extinction. 

Q.The dandelion, transformed into a calligraphic symbol, 

seems to carry significant metaphorical weight in your work. 

How does this delicate imagery serve as a representation of 

resilient migrants and their experiences of displacement and 

determination to navigate new paths? 

Like the dandelion’s dispersing seeds, migrants adapt and thrive 

in diverse environments, embodying the human spirit’s despite 

challenges. It is the universal human experience of seeking a 

way forward despite uncertainties and changes. 


Q.Coming from Mashhad, Iran, and with a background in civil 

engineering and classical calligraphy, your work reflects a 

unique intersection of culture and diverse influences. How 

do these varied aspects of your background contribute to the 

intricate emotional and narrative layers in your art, particularly 

in addressing themes of migration and climate change? 

Artists bring their collective life experience into their art. This 

series is a life lived starting in Mashhad to present time. There 

is always clues in my art influenced by calligraphy, educational 

background and diverse cultures I have experienced. This series 

called Fly Like Dandelions reveals the layers of of migration 

and climate change effecting us globally. At the end we are all 

dandelions.

meets to observe World Cancer Day. 

It’s a poignant reminder of the global 

impact of cancer and the collective 

effort required to combat this pervasive disease. 

Initiated by the Union for International 

Cancer Control (UICC) and supported by 

organizations, governments, and individuals 

worldwide, this day serves as a platform to 

raise awareness, encourage prevention, and 

promote early detection and treatment. 

Cancer knows no boundaries; it affects 

individuals regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, 

or socioeconomic status. The statistics 

are staggering. According to the World 

Health Organization, cancer is the second 

leading cause of death globally, accounting 

for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020 alone. 

Behind these numbers lie countless stories 

of pain, resilience, hope, and loss. 

The theme for World Cancer Day often 

varies, reflecting the multifaceted challenges 

posed by cancer. Whether it’s highlighting 

the importance of early detection, ad- 

vocating for equitable access to treatment, 

or emphasizing prevention through healthy 

lifestyles and vaccination, each theme underscores 

the urgency and importance of 

addressing cancer globally. 

Awareness is a cornerstone of World Cancer 

Day. By fostering a deeper understanding 

of cancer, its risk factors, and its impact, 

we empower individuals to take proactive 

steps toward prevention and early detection. 

Education campaigns, public seminars, and 

media coverage are pivotal in disseminating 

accurate information and dispelling myths 

surrounding cancer. 

Equally crucial is the emphasis on prevention. 

Adopting a healthy lifestyle, avoiding 

tobacco, limiting alcohol consumption, 

maintaining a balanced diet, and engaging 

in regular physical activity can significantly 

reduce the risk of developing certain types 

of cancer. Furthermore, vaccination against 

viruses such as HPV and Hepatitis B can 

prevent infections that may lead to specific 

cancers. 

However, for those already grappling with 

cancer, timely diagnosis and access to quality 

treatment are paramount. World Cancer 

Day serves as a reminder of the inequalities 

in cancer care worldwide. While advancements 

in research and treatment have revolutionized 

cancer care in many high-income 

countries, disparities persist, with many lowand 

middle-income countries lacking adequate 

resources and infrastructure. 

As we commemorate World Cancer Day, 

let us reflect on the progress made, celebrate 

the stories of survival and resilience, 

and recommit ourselves to the ongoing 

fight against cancer. It’s a day to unite, inspire 

change, and work collectively toward 

a world where cancer no longer poses a 

threat to our loved ones or future generations.

MORE THAN 35,000 ATTEND 

QUOZ ARTS FEST 2024: 

11th Edition saw a weekend of over 200 cultural activations and live 

music performances from morning to midnight 

More than 35,000 visitors of all ages 

and from all walks of life attended 

the 2024 edition of Quoz Arts Fest, 

the region’s highly anticipated arts 

and culture festival. The 11th edition, supported 

by Dubai Culture and Arts Authority 

(Dubai Culture) as Strategic Partner, took 

place on 27 & 28 January, transforming the 

lanes of Alserkal Avenue and the Al Quoz 

Creative Zone into a bustling and inclusive 

hive of arts, culture, food and music. 

Quoz Arts Fest 2024 featured more than 

30 live performances, 16 art exhibitions, 9 

art installations, over 75 food and retail concepts, 

and numerous community activations 

and workshops, from morning till midnight, 

creating an emotionally resonant festival experience 

for everyone. Since its inception 

the festival has become known for bringing 

together a wide range of the creative communities 

of the UAE and the region and al- 

lowing them to intersect and create shared 

dialogue. 

A Celebration of the region’s contemporary 

art scene 

The festival launched on the morning of 

27 January with a slew of major public installation 

artworks, including French-Tunisian 

artist eL Seed’s larger-than-life mural, ‘Collection 

of Moments’, on the facade of his studio; 

‘Red Flags’ by Anahita Razmi, courtesy 

of CARBON 12, featuring a series of vividly 

colourful banners and flags across various 

sites; ‘Every Color is a Shade of Black’ by 

Hamra Abbas and curated by Lawrie Shabibi, 

exploring colour in the context of faith, 

identity, race, and beauty. 

Within Concrete, ‘Echoes of Nature’ by 

London-based Japanese artist Yuri Suzuki, 

invited visitors to play with the interactive 

sound installation. Basma Choir’s mesmerising 

celebration of Arabic music and heritage 

in response to Suzuki’s ambient sound 

installation was much-loved by attendees, 

drawing a crowd for each of their hourly performances. 

Another popular standout work at Quoz 

Arts Fest 2024 was the light installation Still 

from Here by PHI Studio, drawing inspiration 

from knowledge possessed by nomadic 

Bedouins and originally commissioned for 

the Noor Riyadh Light Festival. Tanzanian-born 

artist Dipesh Pandya’s transformation 

of a car into a sonic sculpture through a 

site-specific spoken word performance, also 

surprised festival visitors, creating a point 

of artistic connection. Sima Dance Company, 

a pioneering force in Arab contemporary 

dance, put on a visually stunning and 

emotional performance that stole audiences’ 

hearts.

Music with Passion & Purpose 

In the evening, crowds were brought to 

their feet by Sudanese fusion artists MarSimba’s 

blend of Sudanese lingo and African 

beats, and the remixed South Asian DJ sets 

of UAE-based Stick No Bills, who was accompanied 

by musicians playing traditional 

South Asian instruments such as the sitar, 

tabla, and harmonium. Festival-goers were 

in awe of millennial artist Usha Jey’s hybrid 

performance of hip-hop and Bharatanatyam 

ft. Mithu and Janu, while enthused by the return 

of Big Hass, a Dubai-based hip-hop DJ 

as emcee and show-runner. 

The second day of Quoz Arts Fest saw a 

huge turnout for the highly anticipated live 

music performances by The Synaptik and 

Friends, helmed by the Palestinian-Jordanian 

rapper at the forefront of a popular wave 

of Arabic rap and trap, effortlessly merging 

singing and rapping to explore issues such 

as migration and social inequality. His participation 

was invigorated with performances 

by Maysa Daw, who captured the crowd with 

songs exploring her personal experiences, 

as well as DJ Sotusura, Egyptian rapper 

Feluka, and pioneer of the ‘Amman sound’, 

Shbash. 

Quoz Encore, which has already become 

a mainstay of the festival, returned for its 

sophomore cycle, bringing in more than 

80 entries by homegrown bands looking 

for their big break. Twenty-four were shortlisted 

and auditioned, and twelve bands / 

musicians were finally selected to perform 

at Quoz Arts Fest this year. Quoz Encore 

has fast become a showcase of the most 

promising homegrown emerging musicians 

of all ages, genres, and languages, and a 

platform from which to grow. 

Inclusive & Inspired 

The 11th edition of Quoz Arts Fest 2024 

stood out for its inclusivity during the entire 

weekend, with performers, participants, and 

visitors of all ages, backgrounds, and cultural 

interests, coming together and fully immersing 

themselves in the myriad activities. 

Children and their families enjoyed a 

dedicated lane of arts and activities, while 

foodies of all ages and tastes sated their appetites 

thanks to the variety of international 

culinary food offerings from pop-ups, food 

trucks, and permanent restaurants and cafes 

at Alserkal Avenue.

showcasing the fusion of simplicity, functionality,

SKYGARDEN HOUSE, VIETNAM 

In the heart of Nha Trang, Vietnam, Pham Huu Son Architects have crafted a masterpiece on a 

challenging 100 sq.m plot of land. SkyGarden House, constructed in 2023, stands as a testament to 

innovative urban design, addressing the constraints of limited space while embracing the lush tropical 

surroundings of Central Vietnam.

ARCHITECTURAL WONDERS 

Harmony with Nature: 

The design ingeniously integrates a large, 

detached roof, resembling waves, offering 

ample shade to the structure below. This 

not only provides thermal comfort but also 

extends its protective reach over paddocks 

and internment areas for large animals. The 

architecture harmonizes with the environment, 

creating a symbiotic relationship between 

the built and natural elements. 

Spatial Innovation: 

Utilizing the sloping terrain, the architects 

created two platforms with varying 

elevations to house the hospital’s facilities. 

Divided into six distinct blocks, the spacing 

between them allows for cross ventilation, 

fostering a pleasant microclimate. The staggered, 

vertical windows contribute to the dynamism 

of the facades, adding an aesthetic 

appeal to the functional design. 

Solar Protection Marvel: 

Standing at an impressive seven-meter 

high, a solar protection structure made of solid 

ceramic bricks filters the intense sunlight, 

reflecting the region’s climatic challenges. 

With a serpentine shape, this element not 

only shields the interior but also serves as a 

visually striking feature, separating the public 

and private sectors of the building. 

Bioclimatic Oasis: 

Designed as an oasis in the desert, the 

Unileão School Veterinary Hospital incorporates 

passive bioclimatic strategies to 

mitigate the effects of the semi-arid climate. 

The architects have created generous and 

pleasant spaces that prioritize sustainability, 

making this building not only a functional 

educational space but also an architectural 

marvel that thrives in harmony with its surroundings.

Hamra Abbas developed the concept “Every Color 

is a Shade of Black” over several years, starting with 

‘Kaaba Picture as a Misprint’ (2014). Using cyan, magenta, 

and yellow (CMYK) to symbolize the Kaaba’s 

identity, she concluded that every color is a shade of 

black. This framework connects her work, exploring 

color about faith, ideology, race, identity, desire, beauty, 

gender, and personal relationships. Abbas, trained 

in sculpture and miniature painting, resides between 

Boston and Islamabad. Her work has been exhibited 

globally, including at the Victoria and Albert Museum 

and the Asia Society Triennial.

“Sheher, Prakriti, Devi” is a groundbreaking 

exhibition curated by artist and 

photographer Gauri Gill. Expanding on her 

“Rememory” series, the show explores the 

interconnectedness of dynamic cities, nature, 

and spirituality. Featuring twelve artists 

and collectives, the exhibition transcends diverse 

contexts, revealing the porous nature 

of urban and rural spaces. Gill invites viewers 

to perceive ecology as a convergence 

of cultural, natural, and spiritual realms. The 

curated works, including pieces by Chamba 

Rumal, Chiara Camoni, and others, 

showcase the beauty and truths found in 

the mundane to the transcendental. Gill acknowledges 

artists who persist outside traditional 

art networks, fostering a dialogue on 

dualistic worlds—depleted and regenerative, 

colonial and Indigenous, mundane and 

magical. The exhibition, supported by ZEISS 

and J. Safra Sarasin (Middle East) Ltd., is a 

unique celebration of diverse voices in art.

Third Line, “Before Nature (I Am Both Created 

and Destroyed),” draws inspiration from 

the UAE’s natural materials. Translations 

(2024) explores Dubai’s architecture through 

organic shapes inspired by the local mountains. 

Small Monuments (2023) features 

stones from global locations transformed 

into unique canvases, while Rain Paintings 

(2023) pays homage to Samimi’s Hawai’i 

childhood. The centerpiece, Unbroken Column 

(2024), crafted from limestone, reflects 

on ancient religious structures in the region. 

The exhibition delves into the interplay between 

age-old traditions and modern aspirations, 

connecting viewers to hidden forces 

shaping their existence. 

“FLY LIKE DANDELIONS” BY POURAN JINCHI

Pouran Jinchi’s latest series, “Fly Like Dandelions 9” (2023), draws inspiration 

from the New York Times article “Great Climate Migration.” Depicting landscapes 

affected by climate change, Jinchi uses Persian characters for “trees” 

to create fading depictions of tree trunks, merging traditional calligraphy with 

abstraction. Her color palette reflects devastation in black and grey, with blue 

embodying hope. Dandelions, symbolizing the nuanced nature of migration, 

drift across the paintings as calligraphic seed pods, representing resilient migrants 

navigating new paths amid climate change’s profound impact.
