The Cat House
Whilst we’re talking of unusual abodes,
the Cat House in Henfield in East
Sussex is so called because back in the
18th century, the owner decorated his
house with cats to seek revenge for the
death of a beloved canary believed to be
killed by the cat of Nathaniel Woodard,
founder of the famous Woodard schools
(Ardingly, Lancing and Hurst) and who
lived nearby.
The Chichester Road Gang
Centurion Way is an 8.5 km cycle
route in West Sussex that follows the
old Chichester to Midhurst railway
line. As you arrive on the outskirts of
Chichester, you are met by an army of
spade-wielding Roman workers called
the Chichester Road Gang. They’re made
from empty oxygen gas cylinders.

Wonderful churches
You don’t have to be religious to be in
awe of some of our amazing churches.
Like Lullington Church in East Sussex,
which is the smallest church in Sussex,
and one of the smallest churches in
the country, being 16 feet square, and
seating only about 20. Berwick Church
is just a short drive from Lullington
and is decorated in the most incredible
paintings by the Bloomsbury Set.
Whilst over in West Sussex, Hardham
Church near Pulborough is covered
with Medieval frescoes and the English
Martyr’s Church in Worthing has an
identical copy of the Sistine Chapel on
its ceiling!
Now that’s weird but
wonderful.
North Laine, Brighton
Grab a
Sussex
Bargain
From flea markets and emporiums to
charity and vintage shops, Sussex is a great
place to look for that perfect retro find or
money saving bargain
Brighton and Lewes
The obvious place to start your bargain
hunt is in the North Laine district of
Brighton. Tucked away in these narrow
streets, you’ll find dozens of retro stores,
several flea markets and all sorts of Bric
a Brac shops. But if you don’t find what
you’re looking for here, don’t despair,
just head over to the Original Brighton
Flea Market in Upper St James’s Street
in Kemptown which is another great
place to go for that retro bargain.
The Original Brighton Flea Market folk
also have a sister store in Lewes, in an
old Methodist church in Market Street.
You know you’re in for a treat as soon
as you arrive because there are usually
a number of random items on the
forecourt. Dive in for the rummage of
your life. There is vintage clothing, old
records, home wares, art and furniture,
jewellery and lots, lots more.
