Bats in Blinds!
Bats are getting injured or even squished by roll up blinds
and power awnings that provide shade to homes in the
summer. The BC Community Bat Program is actively seeking
assistance to assess how common this is and address it
accordingly.
Bats are important wildlife that provide natural insect pest
control. “Most people install exterior roll up blinds and power
awnings on the south or west side of their house to help create
shade and cool their house. The last thing they want to
do is harm bats as a result of their action,” says Elodie Kuhnert,
Kootenay Community Bat Project regional coordinator.
“However, over the last few years, we’ve been getting reports in
southern BC of bats being attracted to the shutter housing or
box into which the blinds or awnings roll into. Bats are accidentally
and unintentionally getting squished or injured when
the blinds are rolled up and then they fall out dead when the
blinds get rolled down”.
The BC Community Bat Program aims to collect additional
reports to assess the prevalence of this issue. According to
Kuhnert, if it is determined that such incidents are frequent,
the program intends to engage with manufacturers. The goal
is to explore potential design changes, ensuring that awnings
and blinds no longer pose a threat to these important animals,
turning them into unintentional hazards.
Nine of the 15 species that live in British Columbia are listed
as at risk of disappearing. “We only have insect eating bats in
BC. They control nocturnal insect populations and help cycle
nutrients from wetlands to forests, “says Kuhnert.
Bats differ from mice in their behavior; they do not construct
nests, nor do they chew or scratch to access buildings, as
rodents often do. According to Kuhnert, some bats are drawn
to small, secure spaces in human-made structures, making
awning or shade boxes appealing to them. To address this, a
potential solution involves modifying the awning box design
by incorporating features like broom bristles or a cap to seal
the entry gap, effectively preventing bats from entering.
Bats are in trouble as they face many threats including
white-nose syndrome (WNS), a disease that has killed millions
of bats since 2016. WNS does not affect people or pets.
If you have seen bats roosting in your summer roll up
blinds, shades, or awnings in the past years, please contact the
BC Community Bat Program at https://bcbats.ca/got-bats/
dontsquishbats/, email info@bcbats.ca or call 1-855-922-2287.
SUDOKU
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid,
broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a
sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each
row, column and box. Each number can appear
only once in each row, column and box. You
can figure out the order in which the numbers
will appear by using the numeric clues already
provided in the boxes. The more numbers
you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
Magazine Drive Month
Flipping through a magazine remains a favourite pastime for
folks who frequent the Nelson Public Library, evidenced by the
popularity of the Library’s collection of 80 different magazine
titles, from Adbusters to Zoomer.
March is Magazine Subscription Drive month, a chance for
individuals, organization, and businesses to get behind the initiative—and,
potentially, get their name on the cover of The Rolling
Stone!
“We’ve worked hard to offer a wide range of topics,” says coordinator
Heather Dahlgrin. “If you have an interest in fashion,
finance, history, gardening, news—the list goes on—there will be
a magazine looking for a sponsor.”
The library has 80 different magazine titles. Sponsors choose
from the library’s list of magazines, pay for an annual subscription
and, in return, get their name or the name of a business or
organization on the front cover—and a tax receipt.
“It’s interesting that, in this digital age, physical magazines are
just so popular. Sponsoring a magazine is a great way to show
your friends and neighbours that you support the library,” says
Dahlgrin. “Folks who prefer their magazine in digital form—and
there are many!—are welcome to support our digital magazine
collection through a donation as well.”
Folks interested in becoming a magazine sponsor are encouraged
to drop in to the Library, call 250-352-6333, or email
library@nelson.ca. Although the drive happens every March,
sponsors are welcome to come on board at any time of the year.
Nelson Adventure Speaker Series
The Nelson Adventure Speaker Series is pleased to announce
that mountain historian and award-winning author Bernadette
McDonald will be visiting Nelson to promote her new book,
Alpine Rising: Sherpas, Baltis, and the Triumph of Local Climbers
in the Greater Ranges.
Bernadette will speak on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at 7pm at the
Prestige Lakeside Resort, located at 701 Lakeside Drive. Doors
will open at 6:15pm. Alpine Rising is the first comprehensive
history of the contributions of Sherpas and other local climbers
to high-altitude mountaineering, on Everest and beyond. The
ground-breaking book launches March 1 in North America, with
translated editions publishing simultaneously in France, Germany,
Italy, Poland, South Korea, Spain, and Slovenia.
During her Nelson appearance, Bernadette will present photos
and share anecdotes from Alpine Rising, which took three
years to complete. As the founding Vice President of Mountain
Culture at the Banff Centre (including serving as the director of
the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival for 20 years), Bernadette
had unprecedented access to historical records to write this
book, as well as to the world’s most accomplished alpinists and
their descendants.
Alpine Rising is already being heralded as an essential read
for mountain culture enthusiasts; one that will forever change
the way we see the history and legacy of mountaineering in the
Greater Ranges.
Notably, A Book Lover’s Emporium, will be onsite selling books
at the event. Bernadette will sign books immediately following
her presentation. For more information, media assets, or to
arrange an interview with Bernadette McDonald, contact NASS
founder Jayme Moye: jaymemoye@gmail.com, 250-551-5792.
Between Futility and Future
Oxygen Art Centre is delighted to offer the workshop series
entitled “Between Futility and Future” with visiting B.C.-based
artists Alexis Hogan and Chris Dufour. The series entangles ecologically-centered
practices of ink making, dyeing, and plantbased
film developing alongside the use of the body.
Comprised of four workshops in total over spring break,
workshops take place in the evenings from March 26, 2024, to
March 28, 2024, from 6:30 – 8:30 PM, and in the afternoon on
Friday, March 29, 2024 from 3:00 – 5:00 PM. The series builds off
the duo’s social practice, which includes working with invasive
species, making charcoal, community-led sciences, permaculture
and studying the places where queerness and ecology meet.
This series of workshops invites participants into studio-based
explorations where
the artists are
encouraging the
tangling of different
elements
of their creative
and physical disciplines.
The goal of
this commingling
is to create a new
vernacular with
which to carry the
ongoing dialogue
on grief, futility,
anxiety, movement,
and rupture that
lives in the roots of
their collaborative
practice.
Interested participants
are encouraged
to attend all
four workshops,
but attendance
at all sessions is
not required. The
Salmo Ski Hill - Winter Fun
With winter’s crisp embrace, Salmo
Ski Hill in the West Kootenay unveils
a snowy playground for all skill levels.
Beyond a top-tier spot for night skiing,
this cherished family hill has been at
the heart of the community for over six
decades.
“Nothing beats a fresh snowfall and
that night air — it’s phenomenal,” says
Margaret MacDonald, Salmo Ski Club
Board Treasurer and a nearly 20-year
volunteer with the non-profit society that operates the hill.
From 1,000 vertical feet, the top of Main Run offers skiers and
snowboarders a spectacular view of Salmo’s lights at night before
they descend the fully lit run, groomed but with mixed terrain. That
bird’s-eye perspective captures the essence of Salmo Ski Hill, a community-operated
mountain committed to making skiing and snowboarding
affordable and accessible for all.
Fresh off the heels of a retrofit project completed in January 2023,
Salmo Ski Hill is revving up for the season with upgraded facilities,
showcasing a triumph of community dedication. With support from
Columbia Basin Trust, the renovation prioritized the lodge and
patrol building, breathing new life into original structures from the
1960s and enhancing energy efficiency to cut operational costs.
The value extends beyond an approximate 45 per cent savings on
electrical bills during the winter season. The updated appearance
and improved in-building comfort will also cement the lodge’s future
use with increased rental frequency year-round. The overhaul, led
by Herzig Construction, included a new roof, soffits, facia, siding,
upgraded plumbing and electrical systems, wheelchair-accessible
bathrooms and a covered deck for all-season enjoyment.
“In recent years, we’ve realized how much people love being
outdoors,” adds MacDonald. “The newly expanded deck provides
more outdoor space and increased visibility and comfort for parents
watching their children ski, as it’s slightly elevated from the elements.
The space also alleviates congestion inside the lodge.”
Established in 1962, the ski hill is steered by the passionate volunteers
of the Salmo Ski Club, with 25 volunteer ski patrollers and
12 core volunteers, some of whom are third-generation enthusiasts.
“It wouldn’t be the same without our volunteers; it’s what keeps us
affordable,” insists MacDonald. “Our only paid staff are the liftees and
ski/snowboard instructors. We make it a point to hire local youth,
offering them their first job, providing employable training like first
aid, and preparing them for the real world.”
Boasting its own ski team and school, the hill has been a valuable
asset to the region, attracting about 9,000 skier/snowboarder visits
per season from across the West Kootenay, all while operating on
volunteer power Monday-Thursday evenings and full days on Saturdays
and Sundays. The hill not only attracts families for a fraction of
the cost of larger resorts, but also the hardcores who head to Salmo
for some nighttime laps after a full day shredding at Red Mountain
or Whitewater.
“I think the ski hill brings economy into our community as well as
sport and physical fitness opportunities,” says MacDonald. “Without
the ski hill in Salmo, our kids wouldn’t have a place to learn. It’s one
thing if you live closer to a bigger hill, but proximity aside, the affordability
ensures kids throughout the region can enjoy winter sport.”
As the Salmo Ski Hill opens its gates for the season, it does so with
a renewed sense of pride. The project wasn’t just about renovating
buildings; it also revitalized a legacy, ensuring that the spirit of community,
inclusivity and recreation continues to thrive for generations.
Plant Operator Program
Entry into an exciting and rewarding career in the industrial sector
is only a short program away at Selkirk College. Teck Trail Operations
is one of the world’s largest fully integrated zinc/lead smelting
and refining complexes. To make it function on a daily basis, the
intricate operation requires a community of dedicated employees
with a wide variety of trades, skills and education. A foundational
position at Teck is process operator, a versatile job that can be
launched through the 24-week Plant Operator Program.
“Treating it as the start of something helps you be motivated to
learn more and ultimately be better at your job,” says Ariel Poznikoff,
a program alumna from the Class of 2016 who recently received her
seven-year sticker at Teck. “If you put in effort, there are all kinds of
opportunities for you here. It’s the same for the program, what you
put in is what you get out.”
When Poznikoff graduated high school from Castlegar’s Stanley
Humphries Secondary, she did not have her sights set on a career in
heavy industry. She started in Selkirk College’s School of University
Arts & Sciences, but after working in a local garden supply store
decided to pursue a horticulture degree from Kwantlen Polytechnic
University. She emerged with a trusted green thumb, but found herself
drawn to the process side of the sector.
The Plant Operator Program prepares students for entry level
work in a variety of industrial settings ranging from wastewater
treatment to hydro dams and breweries to pulp mills. Gaining
knowledge and developing skills required to operate, monitor
and troubleshoot control equipment, process operators are vital
positions.
Poznikoff was drawn to the Selkirk College program because of its
diverse curriculum and career opportunities. Once she graduated
and was hired by Teck, she put her education to good use. Starting
on the floor crew of the Sulfide Leeching Plant, she has filled a variety
of roles. With a constant thirst for knowledge, Poznikoff has not
stopped learning and is currently an operator instructor within the
plant she started in.
Key Partnership for Career-Ready Education
The Plant Operator Program is offered out of Nelson’s Silver
King Campus where it started in the early-1990s. Partnering and
in constant consultation with employers such as Teck, the program
is sculpted towards providing bedrock education that suits the
region’s industrial sector.
“In so many areas of our operations, Selkirk College graduates are
key to our success,” says Scott Calvin, Teck’s superintendent of HR
planning & talent management. “The Plant Operator Program is a
great example of this synergy with well-educated graduates getting
an opportunity to start careers. We put high value on our relationship
with the instructors and the college.”
Julie-Claire (JC) Hamilton is the instructor who has been guiding
cohorts through the Plant Operator Program since 2018. A Red
Seal electrician who earned her formal education on the Silver King
Campus, she began teaching the electrical portion of the Women
in Trades Program in 2008. With a wealth of real-world experience
and diverse knowledge of a variety of trades, Hamilton helps learners
realize what is possible.
“It’s exciting when a new class begins and you get to mentor this
diverse group of students who are eager to challenge themselves,”
says Hamilton. “There are so many opportunities for our graduates
and Teck is the ultimate destination for many of them. Having
an industry partner of this scale in our backyard that supports
post-secondary is so important to the overall success of our region.”
The spring intake for the Plant Operator Program cohort begins
on March 11 and applications are now being accepted. You can
learn more at: https://selkirk.ca/programs/industry-trades-training/plant-operator-certificate
Firesmart Activities
From educating residents on how to lower the risk of wildfire,
to reducing the amount of vegetation that could fuel a fire, there
are many ways a community can act to keep the threat of wildfire
at bay. Now, 10 communities in the Columbia Basin are undertaking
such projects with support of nearly $1.8 million provided
through a partnership between the Province of British Columbia
and Columbia Basin Trust. Tailored specifically to the Basin,
this program is one aspect of the Province of BC’s Community
Resiliency Investment Program. Partners include the Ministry of
Roy Lake
ROY LAKE
With heavy hearts the family of Roy
Lake must announce his passing in the
early hours of January 30th, 2024.
It is impossible to distill in a few paragraphs
the life of someone who lived
so long and so beautifully, who met
his challenges with so much grace
and loved his people and this place so
deeply.
Roy was born in Kaslo B.C. to Ethel (nee
Rowe) and Stanley Lake and brought
home to the family farm in Johnson’s
Landing where he grew up along with
his brother Alvin and his sisters. Doreen
and Colleen. Many visitors came to the
Lake home in Johnsons Landing and
have passed on stories of the kindness,
generosity, hard work, and resourcefulness
of the Lake family.
Roy attended school in Johnson’s Landing
and was able to complete grade
8 before duty called and he started
working to help support his family.
We were told that as a young man he
seemed to have been born capable and
found a solution for every problem as
he worked on the family farm and in a
few places around the Lardeau Valley.
As a teenager he started work with the
Highways Department building roads
in the East and West Kootenays and in
the Boundary region, always coming
back to the Landing between assignments.
In 1958 Jane Wells, a pretty city girl
from California, came to visit some of
the Quaker families in Argenta. She
caught his eye; his steady kindness,
good humour and grounded, gentle
nature convinced her that life would be
better here and in 1960 they were married
in Argenta. To their delight, babies
Margaret, Catherine, and Duncan soon
The Coldest Night of the Year is a winterrific
family-friendly walk to raise money for local
charities serving people experiencing hurt, hunger,
and homelessness. Team up, fundraise, walk, ...
because it’s cold out there.
Pennywise alternates between walking for Nelson CARES
and Castlegar Community Services, both of whom help
serve those in need in our more rural areas as well as in
their larger communities. This year we walk for Castlegar.
Since 2011, the Coldest Night of the Year has raised over $96,000,000
across Canada in 166 communities – 100% of net proceeds stay local
to support our CNOY charity partners.
Thank you for your donations and encouragement.
It is really cold out there.
followed; Roy had a special way with
babies, they always calmed in his arms.
When family was imminent Roy and
Jane purchased land at the head of
Kootenay Lake and began farming. The
Lake Ranch became a busy intersection
for people from both sides of the
Lardeau Valley. Many people came by
to ask for help solving a problem, to
find work, to borrow a tool. Roy was the
local expert on how to help with anything
from a sick or struggling animal,
putting a waterline, building a barn or
making just about anything grow. He
was generous with his time and his advice.
People who knew him well took
delight in his mischievous streak and
twinkling sense of humour.
When farming was no longer a viable
option Roy pivoted to working his
woodlot and logging for the remaining
years of his working life. In retirement
he was down to just one cow and enjoyed
having extra time to indulge his
love of gardening. Although there was
always plenty of back and forth about
how things should be done in the gardens
Roy and Jane had a magic touch
and could make anything grow. Together
they grew beautiful flower and
vegetable gardens in Meadow Creek
and in Kaslo. Nothing made him happier
than to share his produce or enjoy a
meal with family that came entirely
from his place.
Roy cared deeply about community
and wanted to see his neighbours
thrive. He believed in cooperation and
was inquisitive and open to a changing
world. He was a lifelong member of the
NDP and diligently watched the news
to stay abreast of events.
Forests, BC Wildfire Service and Columbia Basin Trust, which is
administering the funding. “FireSmart activities are a key component
to improving the resiliency of communities across BC,” said
Bruce Ralston, Minister of Forests. “As we navigate the challenges
posed by increasing wildfire risks, supporting funding for communities
to engage in FireSmart activities is not just an investment;
it’s a commitment to our collective safety and resilience.”
The program supports a range of projects. For example, actions
may include hiring a FireSmart coordinator, developing plans
to treat wildfire fuels, carrying out innovative fuel management
Roy was predeceased by his wife Jane
and by his son Duncan, also by his
brother Alvin and sister Doreen. He is
survived by his sister Colleen Braconnier
and his daughters Margaret Murphy
(Kevin) and Catherine Lake and by
his daughter-in-law Yvonne Boyd. He
is also survived by his beloved grandchildren
Connor, Erin and Kate Murphy,
Anna, Jesse and Aidan Sparks, Andrea
and Danan Lake and great grandchildren
Claire, Mabel and Arturo Murphy-Massara
and Meredith Warwick. He
will be deeply missed by many others.
Many thanks to Dr Shier and to the staff
of Victorian Hospital of Kaslo for their
genuinely loving care during the last
years. It has meant so much to know he
was in good hands.
Roy and Jane both took particular delight
in watching new growth emerge
from the cold dark winter into the
warmth of spring.
Please join us when a celebration of
both their lives will be held in Argenta
in the spring.
activities or providing training on how to do FireSmart assessments.
In the program’s first intake in winter 2023, 20 projects
received $2.5 million. Here are a few examples:
Spreading the FireSmart message in Elkford :To reduce wildfire
risk in the community, the District of Elkford is hiring a
FireSmart Coordinator, who will promote FireSmart principles to
residents and contractors.
“The new FireSmart Coordinator will educate the residents
of Elkford on how to incorporate FireSmart principles into their
properties,” said Enzo Calla, Director of Fire & Emergency Services.
“They will also work with the District’s Planning and Development
Services department on how to incorporate FireSmart
principles into new developments.”
To the benefit of the entire Lardeau Valley: The Lardeau Valley
Opportunity LINKS Society is taking a number of actions to minimize
the hazards of wildfire in the valley. With this funding, it’s
hiring a part-time FireSmart Coordinator. In addition, it’s doing
fuel management on 10 hectares of the forested land around Jewett
Elementary School in Meadow Creek, creating a demonstration
site that will increase wildfire resilience for the school and
immediate area, as well as educate the extended community.
“Through a multifaceted approach, our project aims to address
the valley’s priorities and plans for wildfire resiliency,” said
Chelsey Jones, Executive Director. “While ensuring the safety and
well‐being of the surrounding neighborhoods, the fuel management
location also offers an invaluable opportunity to educate
the public on FireSmart practices and promote the importance
of proactive wildfire prevention within the broader community.”
Safer spaces near Rosebery: Near Rosebery on Slocan Lake,
10 hectares of Crown land is benefiting from FireSmart fuel-reduction
practices like removing secondary growth, brush and
downfall. The project is being spearheaded by the Rosebery Community
Association.
“Building upon successful community FireSmart activities over
the past several years, this prescription will reduce fuel sources
for natural‐ and human‐caused fires and limit the spread of fires
that do occur,” said Kay Schweitzer, Chair. “This will immediately
reduce wildfire risk for some of the community’s most heavily
used recreational and residential areas and create a defendable
and accessible fire break through the middle of the community.”
The Shuswap Band targets hazards: To reduce the danger
introduced by influences like Douglas fir ingrowth and the
encroachment of common juniper, the Shuswap Band is undertaking
wildfire risk-reduction treatments on 31 hectares of Crown
land near the Shuswap reserve and surrounding community.
“The Shuswap Band, historically stewards of the land, has a significant
recent history of land management in the local area with
respect to forest fuel management and ecosystem restoration.
This project follows several years of successful activities,” said
Sierra Stump, Lands Manager. “With this treatment, forest fuel
loading will be significantly decreased, reducing the intensity and
rate of spread of wildfire and decreasing the threat to the adjacent
surrounding community infrastructure.”
The program builds on a previous partnership between the
Trust and the Province, which aimed to help Basin communities
build wildfire resiliency while recovering from the economic
impacts of the pandemic. Through it, 29 projects in the Basin
received $3.1 million and created 293 jobs.
