THE 2023-24 MARCHING DRAGONS

The Green Dragon Foundation is proud to support these students by helping to provide a new truck for the band program.

Dear Friends,

This year, The Green Dragon Foundation celebrates its 15th anniversary. Even though our

mission statement was crafted in 2008, Ben Franklin penned the first draft nearly 300 years

earlier when he wrote, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” We could not

agree more and hope you feel the same way!

All costs associated with special events and receptions are underwritten by generous

individuals and businesses specifically for that purpose. The 2022-23 Annual Report

and Honor Roll of Donors are made possible through gifts provided by members of

The Green Dragon Foundation’s Board of Directors.

Since 2008, we have distributed outright support to the Lewisburg Area School District of

more than $2.5 million; and we have secured an additional $900,000 for 25 permanent

and four quasi-endowments, the income from which distributes more than $30,000 annually

for district priorities.

In 2022-23, the foundation gave $158,774 (including in-kind contributions) to LASD for a

variety of programs and projects across grades K-12. A partial list includes completion of

the high school greenhouse; support for elementary literacy through Kelly Kindergarten

Kick-Off; partial funding for the new band truck; funding for a bluegrass workshop for

middle and high school choral students; STEM program support at Kelly and Linntown

schools; funding for the K-8 Food Insecurity program; and continued support for our most

vulnerable students through the “Lifting Up Lewisburg” Quasi-Endowment.

None of these accomplishments would be possible without the generous support of

parents, grandparents, district employees, alumni, businesses, and other friends. You have

our deepest gratitude for your “investment in knowledge” and we hope you share our pride

in what we have accomplished together.

Thank you. And here’s to the next 15 years!

Sincerely,

Robert J. Kallin

THE GREEN DRAGON FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2022-23 1

Our 2023-24 school year began with our annual fullstaff

Convocation in August. This rite of entry into our

academic year is a wonderful tradition at LASD. We

enjoyed hosting 240 staff in a gathering to recognize

our successes and milestones, refocus our work for

the coming year, and celebrate a genuine esprit de

corps. I framed the year with a theme calling to mind the

“3Rs.” While I date myself by sharing that it was not the

familiar Reading and Writing and Arithmetic idiomatic

expression from yesteryear, it was an intentional

reference to three “Rs” that now occupy center stage

in our contemporary world of public education—namely

routines, rituals, and relationships.

Our schools have returned to routines, the steady and

reliable structures providing the framework, stability, and

security known by all to define us and our daily work.

Everything from daily schedules and in-person classes,

to bus and food services and a traditional school

calendar assure us all we are indeed going forward as a

healthy and viable public education system in service to

our local Lewisburg community.

Our return to rituals at every level involves intentional

efforts to again enjoy all those pieces that collectively

create memories and sustain the enjoyment and pride in

our schools. We have been able to provide assemblies

and special programs. Our student clubs are active

again at both middle school and high school. We hold

sporting contests with our families and fans present.

We return to hosting music concerts, fall plays, and our

spring musical and art show, and sharing these with

appreciative audiences. With support from The Green

Dragon Foundation, our teachers receive resources for

programs and introduce new learning opportunities that

will likely become rituals. Our supporting organizations,

including PSA, LAMA, All Sports Booster Club, Alumni

Association, and of course the GDF, are our active

partners in all our efforts.

These wonderful organizations help form a marvelous

aspect of that third “R” – relationships. We focus on

strengthening relationships within our schools and

A MESSAGE FROM

THE SUPERINTENDENT

ask teachers to cultivate caring relationships with our

students and their families. We focus staff development

toward building cultures of empathy and caring for our

students and for one another. We also work closely

with our community partners in not only creating but

sustaining and strengthening viable relationships

through effective communication and positive

cooperation toward shared goals and dedicated efforts.

These same dedicated efforts are readily recognized

in the purpose and passion of The Green Dragon

Foundation. Foundation members’ genuine interest

and generous support of our students and our schools

has never been more evident. Their work illustrates

their stated mission, and the organization has indeed

enhanced our students’ experiences and assisted our

staff in myriad ways. We have been the beneficiaries

of their tireless work on our behalf. Whether it is public

campaigns to provide programs, concerted fundraising

to provide or enhance facilities, endowments to enrich

our programs, or provisional support for student needs

through Lifting Up Lewisburg, our relationship with

the GDF remains valued and steadfast. We continue

to thrive with the support of our community and the

foundation, and we remain grateful for this wonderful

relationship. With our partnership we truly aspire to

realize the GDF’s visionary words, “Unique Community-

Unlimited Opportunity.”

ABOUT US

The mission of The Green Dragon Foundation is to enhance our student experience, assist our teachers and staff,

and enrich our community by raising funds to support the priorities of the Lewisburg Area School District.

2022-23

IN REVIEW

Thanks to loyal and dedicated donors and

volunteers, the hard work of The Green Dragon

Foundation’s Board of Directors, Lewisburg Area

School District leadership, faculty and staff, the GDF

raised $402,242 during the last school year.

The additional revenue your gifts provide creates

exceptional opportunities for all Lewisburg students

and helps meet the needs of the most vulnerable

students. Endowments provide even greater

long-term support for our students; major gifts can

underwrite larger projects; and as annual support

increases, so do opportunities for our students.

The GDF is governed by a 25-member board of

directors (including advisors), led by executive

director Ann Glock. GDF benefited from the work of

56 volunteers who provided 358 hours of service.

Volunteers and the essential work that they provide

are a key factor that enables GDF to fulfill its mission.

We invite you to join our team! Contact the GDF

office at (570) 522-8433 or by email at: annglock@

greendragonfoundation.org to learn about volunteer

opportunities.

GIFTS TO LASD

Through the generosity of parents, alumni, businesses, and friends,

The Green Dragon Foundation supports Lewisburg Area School District

students, faculty, and programs in a variety of ways. In 2022-23, the

GDF provided or invested a total of $227,516 to benefit current or

future LASD students. GDF distributed $158,774 ($137,123 financial

and $21,651 in-kind) to the LASD and endowed an additional $68,742

for future programmatic support. These gifts will enhance and enrich

educational opportunities for all current students in the Lewisburg area

and for future generations.

LOOKING AHEAD

TO 2024

The GDF will continue to raise much-needed funds to

support the Lewisburg Area School District’s priorities.

Additionally, we will focus on helping meet the needs of

the most vulnerable students in our school community

who are supported through the Lifting Up Lewisburg

Quasi-Endowment.

The GDF Board of Directors, advisors, and volunteers

continue soliciting gift commitments for capital

improvement projects, multi-year support of LASD

programs, long-term investment through endowments,

and planned giving opportunities for future support.

In 2024 we will see the culmination of some of our efforts,

including the Dragons’ Den and the LAHS Greenhouse,

and we look forward to working with LASD administrators

to identify new fundraising priorities.

ADDY RUMMEL:

Why I Serve

The Green Dragon Foundation is fortunate to have

many talented board members who have served the

organization over the past 15 years. Board members

and advisors faithfully attend quarterly or monthly

committee meetings in addition to board meetings

six times a year. Some board members take on

additional responsibilities that enable the foundation

to increase its support for education in Lewisburg.

One of the board members who goes the extra mile

is Addy Rummel.

Addy started as a volunteer with GDF in 2021.

Executive director Ann Glock knew that Addy’s

professional background in fundraising would make

her an asset to the organization. Addy began as a

board advisor serving on the Fund Development

Committee. She has been an integral part of

the SMART goal subcommittee which monitors

fundraising progress. Addy became a voting board

member in August 2022. Additionally, she chairs the

Special Events Committee, leading our volunteers

in planning events such as the Dragons’ Den 5K,

Kindergarten Grill-Out, and the Donor and Volunteer

Recognition Reception.

In addition to her GDF responsibilities, Addy is also

a devoted mother of four children in the Lewisburg

Area School District: Nora (9), Lulu (7), Cece (5), and

Austin (5). She and her husband Justin are originally

from Central PA and returned to the area in 2019

after living in the Washington D.C. area for 13 years.

Addy also serves as a committee chair for the

Lewisburg Elementary PSA and is on the board of the

Lewisburg Children’s Museum.

When asked about serving on the GDF board,

Addy stated, “I love being part of a community that

works to enhance the student experience in our

district. In our short time in Lewisburg, we’ve had the

opportunity to meet many of the individuals that help

make this community so great.”

Addy’s willingness to take on new tasks has made

her an essential member of the GDF team in a short

amount of time. The foundation is grateful to Addy

for her enthusiasm and dedication to education in

Lewisburg.

The LAHS Marching Dragons are on the move. From

their busy fall season to parades in the spring, their

mobility is essential. When it became apparent that the

22-year-old band truck could not safely and reliably

serve the needs of the band, LASD asked The Green

Dragon Foundation to raise funds for its replacement.

During marching band season, the truck is used each

weekend to transport band equipment to away football

games or home games at Bucknell University. The

equipment includes large percussion instruments,

rolling panels for the field show, and color guard flags.

The truck also pulls the band trailer, which is used to

transport additional band equipment. The truck is used

for local trips such as performances at Knoebel’s or

out-of-state multi-day trips the music department takes

every three years.

The LASD asked GDF to raise $30,000, about half

of the funds needed to purchase the new truck. The

foundation’s Fund Development Committee partnered

with the Lewisburg Area Music Association to identify

potential donors and raise funds at the district-wide

ExtravaBANDza concert in March 2023. Through

small and large donations from parents, former band

students, and local businesses, within a short amount

of time, the fundraising goal was met. The truck was

ordered to arrive for the beginning of the school year,

in August 2023. The vehicle was delivered early and

made its debut at the Union County Veterans’ 4th of July

Parade.

LAHS Band Director Dan Schwanger expressed his

gratitude saying, “The new truck is already in use for the

Marching Dragons and we have been very happy with

it. Students are utilizing the new vehicle’s features and

have been able to load/unload successfully for events.

The new truck is a huge improvement over the old one

in terms of hauling power, drivability, and fuel efficiency,

plus added safety features like a backup camera and

better mirrors help driver visibility. We are grateful and

excited to use the new truck to drive our equipment

to Washington DC in November, and its dependability

gives us peace of mind.”

Planning Your Gift

Financial gifts to The Green Dragon Foundation, a

501(c)(3) organization, make a difference for current

and future Lewisburg Area School District students

and facilitate opportunities for learning and growth

that would not otherwise be possible. It is through

the generosity of gifts like yours that our students are

served by GDF. Below is a list of the many ways a gift

can be made or planned.

• Outright Gift of Cash

• Matching Gift

• In-Kind Gift

• Outright Gift of Appreciated Securities

• Outright Gift of Real Estate

• IRA Assets

• Bequest

• Gift of Retirement Assets

• Gifts of Insurance Policy Proceeds

• Charitable Gift Annuity

• Charitable Remainder Trust

• Charitable Lead Trust

OUTRIGHT GIFTS OF CASH

The most common method of providing a gift, a cash

gift to GDF, is tax-deductible. You may donate online at

www.greendragonfoundation.org or you may send your

donation to: The Green Dragon Foundation, 115 Farley

Circle, Suite 306, Lewisburg, PA 17837.

A VARIETY OF

WAYS TO DONATE

MATCHING GIFTS

Does your company have a matching gift program? Many

employers will match charitable contributions made by

their employees. If your company has a matching gift

program, you could double or possibly triple your gift

quickly and easily.

IN-KIND GIFTS

Contributions of goods or services to either GDF or LASD

can provide an ideal giving opportunity for both donor

and recipient.

BEQUESTS AND OTHER PLANNED GIFTS

Bequests are provisions in wills to leave a gift to GDF.

Charitable bequests are fully deductible from the estate

and can significantly reduce estate taxes on the balance

of the estate. Bequests may be specified as a gift of cash

or securities, real estate, or other property. Alternatively,

they may take the form of a percentage of the total estate.

A donor may consider a residuary bequest, which is a gift

of all or a portion of one’s estate after other conditions

are met.

For more detailed information about charitable planned gifts

and the most advantageous ways to make them, please

contact The Green Dragon Foundation at (570) 522-8433 or

annglock@greendragonfoundation.org.

Reduce your Taxes

DONATE IRA ASSETS TO

THE GREEN DRAGON FOUNDATION

TURN YOUR REQUIRED DISTRIBUTIONS INTO CHARITABLE DONATIONS

The Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), also known

as the Charitable IRA Rollover, continues to be a tax-savvy

way to give for those who qualify. If you’d like to give to

help provide educational opportunities for Lewisburg area

students, the QCD can help you leverage your support—

and minimize your taxation.

This provision allows those who qualify to exclude

transfers of IRA assets made directly to The Green

Dragon Foundation from their taxable income and count it

toward their required minimum distribution.

To support Lewisburg students by making a QCD,

you must:

• Be 70 ½ years or older at the time of the gift

• Have a traditional or Roth IRA

• Transfer funds, not exceeding $100,000 per

year, directly from your IRA to GDF

Benefits include:

• Gifts make an immediate impact by advancing

GDF’s mission

• Gifts count toward your required minimum

distribution, now beginning at age 72

• Gifts are not included in, and therefore not taxed as,

income for federal tax purposes

• Gifts simulate an itemized income tax charitable

deduction for non-itemizers

• Gifts can be directed to support educational, cultural,

or athletic programs

HOW CAN I MAKE A QUALIFIED CHARITABLE

DISTRIBUTION TO SUPPORT GDF?

QCDs are easy; a simple letter of instruction to your

IRA administrator begins the process. We will provide

one for you, or you can visit the GDF website at

www.greendragonfoundation.org to download and

print the IRA form and instructions to share with your

IRA account administrator.

It’s important to consider your tax situation before

deciding whether to make a charitable contribution

from your IRA. Be sure to work closely with your

financial representative or tax advisor to determine

whether this tax provision is right for you.

This information is not meant as tax or legal advice. Tax laws are complex and

subject to change. Please consult a professional tax advisor to determine how

this law affects your situation.

FUNDING FOR FUTURE

GENERATIONS

OF STUDENTS:

The P. Joseph Keller Endowment

A named endowment is a unique way to remember

a loved one or honor an individual who has made a

significant impact in your life or in the community. Funds

can be directed to support programs that are important to

or reflect the interests of the person for which it is named.

The P. Joseph Keller Endowment was created in

February 2023 by Wayne and Sharon Stump (Class

of 1968) in honor of their great friend, Joe Keller, a

retired LASD high school teacher. The Stumps want to

ensure there are funds available to provide exceptional

educational opportunities for Lewisburg students, in

honor of Joe, who taught high school biology for 30 years

and helped with the school’s performing arts productions.

The fund supports STEM programs and the Performing

Arts for K-12 students in the LASD.

Joe began his teaching career at LAHS in 1960

and retired in 1990. He was a great teacher and is

remembered fondly by students for the positive impact

he had on their educational experience. He provided all

students, whether in his class or not, with understanding

and guidance. Joe continues to live in Lewisburg and is

active in the community.

Wayne described their reason for creating the

endowment saying, “Sharon and I established the Joe

Keller Endowment because Joe’s 30 years of teaching

demonstrated his dedication to professionalism, students

and Lewisburg Area High School. His interests in the

performing arts allowed Joe and Linda Dodd to co-direct

and establish the school musicals. Joe has continued

to be a very kind and caring member of the Lewisburg

community who was very involved through many

volunteer activities. We have been close friends and truly

appreciate his kindness and friendship all these years.”

The Green Dragon Foundation is proud to assist the

Stumps in creating this endowment to honor their friend

and assist future generations of students.

ENDOWMENTS: SUPPORTING STUDENTS

NOW AND IN THE FUTURE

An endowment is a gift that will provide funding in

perpetuity for the Lewisburg Area School District. The

principal funds are preserved, while a small percentage

(usually 4 percent) of funds is available each year for

distribution to the LASD. It is a perfect way to establish

an enduring legacy in honor or memory of a loved one. It

also creates a stream of permanent funding and can be

structured to benefit the donor’s particular interest.

The Green Dragon Foundation is focused on matching

donor interests to the academic, arts, athletic, and

support program opportunities that exist throughout

the district. To accomplish this goal, the GDF seeks

support for program-specific endowments, both general

and named, the income from which will support LASD

programming for the life of the fund. Endowment funds

allow our educators to be creative and innovative and can

therefore more fully engage students.

The GDF continues to work with donors to create

named endowments. To date, GDF has collaborated with

donors to establish 18 named permanent endowments.

Additionally, GDF has created seven endowments which

cover specific areas that LASD has identified. Four

quasi-endowments are invested but both their income

and principal may be spent as needed. The stories on the

following pages demonstrate how funds distributed from

these endowments were used to benefit students during

the 2022-23 school year. The impact on our students and

teachers cannot be underestimated.

If creating an endowment for the benefit of current and future

Lewisburg area students meets your philanthropic goals,

please contact the GDF for more information.

THE GREEN DRAGON FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2022-23 9

During the 2022-23 school year, The Green Dragon Foundation allocated funding to benefit Lewisburg area

students from 24 endowed funds. These funds have reached the minimum criteria to begin disbursing monies

to support their intended purpose—enhancing LASD programs, projects, and capital improvement projects. The

following stories highlight many of the programs that received funding from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023.

THE MILES MCKENNAN FOREMAN MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT

Lewisburg Studio

This flexible, district-wide endowment supported a variety

of programs. The Kelly Swim Program received $330.

This important program enables all 2nd grade students

to receive swimming instruction. $508 was provided for

the publication of Tarasque, LAHS’ literary magazine, for

which over 30 students submitted original literary and art

works for publication.

Tarasque is produced each spring. English teacher and

Tarasque advisor Tyler Russell thanked GDF saying,

“It made all the difference for us to be able to focus

on including even more art and writing in this year’s

This fund provides support to strengthen and maintain

programs primarily for poetry and the visual arts, including

photography, video, film, painting, drawing, ceramics,

and sculpture and, secondarily, to meet needs of the band

and performing arts. These are the types of activities that

enriched Miles’ education while he was a student at LASD

schools.

$1,382 was distributed from this fund to provide new

photography equipment for the Photojournalism class

at LAHS. Students in the class are responsible for creating

the LAHS yearbook and taking photos at numerous school

events throughout the year. Students benefited from new

cameras, zoom lenses, and storage equipment.

PROGRAMMING IN THE GARDEN: FARMBOT GENESIS XL

GDF approved funding for a farming robot to be used

in the new greenhouse to integrate technology and

agriculture. Students will program the FarmBot to

perform tasks that include watering, weeding, and

harvesting. Classes began using the greenhouse in fall

2023; we look forward to seeing what the students will

produce – literally!

The following endowments supported the FarmBot:

$1,600 from The Quasi-Endowment for Science; $1,091

from The GDF Endowment for STEM Programs, and

$384 from The Nathaniel Hafer ’96 and Christopher

Hafer ’99 Endowment for LAHS Science Curriculum.

THE GDF ENDOWMENT FOR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Tarasque. With lots of beautiful full-color layouts and more

printed pages than ever, we couldn’t be prouder of the

finished book. Thanks to the generous support of The

Green Dragon Foundation, we were able to curate,

edit, and publish a beautiful showcase of the incredible

creative work happening at Lewisburg Area High

School.”

DIROCCO FUND FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

This fund was created by friends of former Lewisburg Superintendent

Dr. Mark DiRocco to provide funds for training and educational

opportunities to enhance professional skills for administrators,

teachers, and staff.

$1,444 was distributed to purchase mindfulness books for each

teacher at Kelly Elementary. The books, Breathe Like a Bear, Peaceful

Like a Panda, and Listen Like an Elephant, will be classroom resources

to help teachers incorporate mindfulness into daily class routines as

well as their work with students individually. The resources will also help

students deliver morning mindfulness messages each week.

THE MARYELLEN (CARTER)

AND RICHARD L. KEYSER

ENDOWMENT

The Keysers created this endowment to give Lewisburg

area students exceptional educational opportunities like

the ones the couple enjoyed as students in Lewisburg

schools.

This fund supports programs and initiatives for preschool and

elementary students to master literacy skills. These skills are crucial

building blocks for student success. The fund was created in 2016 by

Lily and Dave Openshaw in memory of Lily’s parents.

$1,032 was provided from this endowment to support elementary

reading during the summer Kelly Kick-Off program. Students who

are entering kindergarten are invited to spend several weeks over

the summer working on their pre-reading skills. Kelly teacher Lisa

Erdley expressed her gratitude, saying, “It truly makes a difference for

those timid students who often are ‘overpowered’ by their stronger

classmates. It also helps calm the new school/new school year jitters

and get students back into the school frame of mind!”

$2,000 was distributed to provide a bluegrass

workshop for middle and high school choral students.

Colebrook Road, a contemporary bluegrass quintet from

Harrisburg, worked with students during the morning and

afternoon, exposing them to bluegrass, Appalachian folk,

and country music. In the evening a concert was held for

parents and the public. Middle school music teacher Sarah

Tiede, who organized the event, felt that it was a great

experience for the middle school choral students to work

with a professional group, learn about different music

genres and collaborate with high school chamber choir.

The Keyser Endowment also provided $1,784 to support

the LAHS spring musical students’ trip to NYC. The

students were grateful to resume the trip to Broadway this

year after it was cancelled for several years due to Covid.

Approximately 50 students spent several hours exploring

experience of enjoying live theater in the city is something

these students will never forget. The trip was also funded

THE LAHS GROWTH OPPORTUNITY AND

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT (GOLD) PROGRAM

After becoming aware of national statistics on teen

suicide, depression, and anxiety, several LAHS teachers

led by Claire Gault and Hillary Cree developed the GOLD

program for female and non-binary freshmen to help them

manage the unique challenges facing teens today. GOLD’s

focus was to foster empowerment, coping strategies and

community building through a fun and judgement free

“night in”. Over 40 students participated in the event

which included empowering speakers from the Lewisburg

community, small and large group sessions, and handson

creative activities. Feedback from students was very

positive, such as “I felt so connected”, “I am so glad I

came”, and “I felt like I was making a difference”. The

next GOLD program is being planned for the 2023-24

school year.

The GOLD Program received $4,402 from a variety

of sources, including Uniquely the Same - The Jusko

Endowment ($478). This endowment, created by

the Jusko family, provides funding for programs that

support the social, emotional, and physical wellbeing

of each student. Funding also came from the Lifting

Up Lewisburg Quasi-Endowment ($1,723) which

provides funding for the district’s most vulnerable

students. Remaining funding came from The Josephine

K. Machamer Steele Endowment ($210) and gifts

specifically designated for this purpose.

THE PAT COLLINS ENDOWMENT

This fund supports technology education, providing the types of hands-on

activities that Pat Collins ’49 enjoyed when he was a student in LASD schools.

He created this endowment to share his love of building and woodworking

with as many students as possible.

$2,311 was distributed to give eighth graders from Donald H. Eichhorn

Middle School the opportunity to visit SUN Area Technical School. Students

experienced hands-on activities in the various technical areas to learn what it

is like to attend SUN; most worked on a project to take home.

Principal George Drozin thanked the GDF saying, “Without the hands-on

portion of the trip to SUN, 99% of our students would have gone and zoned

out throughout. The engagement of the students, because of the hands-on

opportunities, made the trip a worthwhile learning experience for the kids.”

An additional $1,283 was distributed for the purchase of a laser printer for the

business and technology department at LAHS. See page 13.

THE LOIS J. HUNTER ENDOWMENT

This endowment provides annual funding to support district-wide science, music, performing

arts, and social/emotional health programs. It was created in 2019 by David M. Hunter Jr. in

memory of his wife, Lois.

$391 was provided to support LAHS choir students (left to right) Katie Kelley, Jonah Carney

and Summer Evans, who were accepted to the National Association for Music Education’s

All-Eastern Mixed Chorus Ensemble. The funding assisted with travel expenses to the

conference in Rochester, NY, in April 2023. This is a very prestigious honor and LAHS is proud

to have three students participate.

THE RIYA K. AND AAMAR S. JOHAL ENDOWMENT FOR

THE ENRICHMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES

This fund supports district-wide environmental science

education in a variety of forms, including outdoor science

labs, research/teaching equipment, field trips, nature

trails, guest speakers, and other educational activities

related to this field.

$482 was distributed to purchase water testing kits,

alternative energy packs, and decoding materials

for second through fifth grade STEM programs. The

THE GDF ENDOWMENT FOR PERFORMING

AND VISUAL ARTS PROGRAMS

This fund provides district-wide support for performing

arts (choral, instrumental, musical, and dramatic theater)

and visual arts (photography, video, film, painting,

drawing, ceramics, and sculpture) programs.

$735 was distributed to purchase a keyboard for

orchestra instruction at Donald H. Eichhorn Middle

School. Students benefit from being able to hear their

parts played together and along with them during

microbit kits enable students to take coding to the next

level by working offscreen to code something that

functions. Fourth grade students will create data logs

to calculate energy consumption during their study of

alternate energy, and fifth graders will create prototypes

of wireless sensors to monitor ocean environments and

then design and create vehicles to clean up oil spills.

orchestra rehearsals. The additional $327 needed to

purchase the equipment came from The Shabahang

Family Endowment.

Mr. Anthony Fortuna, director of middle school and

high school orchestras, expressed his gratitude to GDF

saying, “I am so appreciative that The Green Dragon

Foundation was able to purchase a keyboard for my

instructional use with the DHEMS orchestra program.

I am now able to play piano accompaniments to solo

pieces and orchestral music, musically illustrate how

different parts fit together, and help the orchestras

keep a steady tempo throughout challenging sections.

Additionally, the keyboard helps to improve intonation by

always setting a steady established pitch, and the amp

ensures that the musicians will always be able to hear the

keyboard when the entire orchestra is playing.”

Additionally $258 was provided for choir students to

attend the All-Eastern Mixed Chorus Ensemble.

BUSINESS & TECHNOLOGY LASER PRINTER

Funds from several endowments were combined to facilitate the

purchase of a laser printer for use in the business and technology

classes at LAHS. Students use the printer to create designs, and to print

and market their creations. They utilize business skills to plan marketing

and communication strategies and determine profitability. Students have

designed and made t-shirts for LAHS student-group events, including

the annual physics student trip to Hershey Park.

The following funds were used for the laser printer: $1,283 from

The Pat Collins Endowment; $1,186 from The GDF Endowment

for 21st Century Classrooms, which provides support for studentfocused

technology needs; and $928 from The GDF Endowment for

STEM Programs. An additional $928 was provided from donor gifts

designated for educational programs.

Donor & Volunteer

RECOGNITION RECEPTION

The Green Dragon Foundation held its annual Donor

& Volunteer Recognition Reception on September 18,

2022 to celebrate the GDF’s 14th year of support for

students and teachers, and the continuing excellence

of Lewisburg schools.

The event, held at Fero Vineyards in Lewisburg,

included special recognition of our dedicated

volunteers. Volunteers honored for five and 10 years

of service included: Elaine Dietrich; Marsha Knoster;

Cindi Martin; Jessica Olenginski; Jeff Ranck; and Don

Steele (10 years); and Brianna Apfelbaum Kula; Polly

Patterson; and Jennifer Reish (five years).

The highlight of the awards portion of the reception

was the presentation of the Volunteer of the Year

Award. This award was created in 2011 to recognize

a volunteer who went above and beyond in the

scope of volunteer efforts. This year, the award was

bestowed upon Abby Gulden-Luthi, Class of 2000.

Abby has been a key member of the Dragons’ Den

Fundraising Steering Committee and spearheaded

the inaugural Dragons’ Den 5K and Kids’ Run in May

2022. With the help of Abby’s effort and enthusiasm,

GDF has raised $378,695 (72 percent) toward

its fundraising goal of $525,000. Expressing her

gratitude for the recognition Abby stated, “GDF has

supplemented each of my children’s education

inside and outside the classroom. It is an honor

to be part of that.”

Also addressing the guests were Board Chair Bob

Kallin, Superintendent Cathy Moser, and School Board

President Virginia Zimmerman. An additional highlight

was a presentation by LAHS teacher Mike Creeger

and LAHS senior Olivia Hockenbrock on support of

the Future Business Leaders of America program.

They gave a firsthand account of how students

have been positively impacted by the opportunities

afforded to them through funding from GDF. The

Green Dragon Foundation thanks the sponsors who

make this event possible year after year.

THE BRANDON

KRAMM MEMORIAL

GOLF TOURNAMENT

On June 9, 2023, 140 golfers participated in The

Brandon Kramm Memorial Golf Tournament. Over

$18,000 was added to the Brandon Kramm Memorial

Quasi-Endowment for athletic programs or facilities at

LAHS. Kramm family and friends volunteer every year

to make this event a success.

KINDERGARTEN

GRILL OUT

The 8th annual Kindergarten Grill Out, where families

of incoming kindergarten children enjoy a light

dinner together, was co-hosted by The Green Dragon

Foundation and the Lewisburg Elementary PSA on

Aug. 17, 2022, at St. Mary’s Park. The yearly event,

held just before school starts, is an opportunity for

fellowship among incoming kindergarten children and

their families. Kelly Elementary Principal, Eric Wetzel,

and LASD Superintendent, Cathy Moser, greeted and

welcomed families.

DRAGONS' DEN 5K

On May 29, 2023, over 50 runners participated in

the 2nd annual Dragons’ Den 5K and Kids’ Run,

held at Lewisburg Area High School. Over $3,000

was raised to support the Dragons’ Den project,

which will provide much-needed restrooms and

concessions between the turf field and Brandon

Kramm Memorial Baseball Field. The GDF Special

Events Committee and many volunteers planned

and managed the fun event.

Student Perspective:

SUMMER

EVANS

Class of 2024

Like many LAHS students, senior Summer Evans is

constantly on the go. From academics and music to

part-time work, Summer stays busy but seems to do it all

with a smile. She values and makes the most of the many

opportunities at LAHS.

Summer is an accomplished music student participating

in band, choir, and the spring musicals. She was named

to the 2023 NAFME All East Honors Choir. The GDF was

proud to help provide funding for Summer and two other

students to travel to the conference, which was held in

Rochester, NY, in April 2023. Summer is also a member of

the Marching Dragons and is a flute section co-leader.

Summer’s real passion is theater. She participated in

several plays in middle school and continues to be

involved in plays and musicals in high school. Last March

she played the lead role of Sarah Brown in Guys & Dolls

and is looking forward to participating in Mary Poppins

in March 2024. Additionally, last spring, Summer helped

lead the Student Theater Collective, an all-student group.

She and another student organized and directed the

group in staging the play, Twelve Incompetent Jurors.

She hopes to direct another performance in spring 2024.

Since ninth grade, Summer has been involved in LAHS

Key Club. In 2022-23 she held the position of lieutenant

governor on the Key Club PA state board. Summer

and several other LAHS Key Club volunteers assisted

GDF by helping at the Kindergarten Grill-Out in August

2023. Summer and three of her peers have formed an a

cappella group called “The Sweet Adelines.” They shared

their talents at the GDF Donor and Volunteer Reception

in September 2023.

Summer is a member of the cross country and track &

field teams. She has been inducted into The National

Honor Society, The French Honor Society, and The Tri-M

Music Honor Society. Summer will graduate in June 2024.

She plans to attend college to earn a Bachelor of Fine

Arts degree, studying either musical theater or acting.

She eventually wants to earn a master’s degree and go

into directing.

Summer looked back on her experiences saying, “I

am very grateful for the incredible education and

opportunities I’ve received from my years here at

Lewisburg, and all the help I’ve gotten from The Green

Dragon Foundation. I will never forget the wonderful

memories I’ve made at our school!”

The Green Dragon Foundation established giving level societies to recognize the dedication and commitment of its

donors. We are very grateful for the financial support of the contributors, listed on the next several pages, who have

made donations (including in-kind) or pledge payments between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023. The total years

of giving are in parentheses.

Why I Give:

LAUREN

GEMBERLING ’96

Lauren Gemberling ’96 hails from a long line of Lewisburg graduates, including

her father, Gerald Gemberling ’66, and his parents. Lauren began supporting

The Green Dragon Foundation in 2021. When Lauren’s father passed away in

January 2021, GDF was named as one of the philanthropic organizations to

which family and friends could make memorial donations. Gerald, a lifetime

resident of Lewisburg, planned many of his class reunions and served as a

Class Agent for the Class of 1966.

In 2022, Gerald was posthumously named a Distinguished Alumni by the LAHS

Alumni Association. From that point on, Lauren became a recurring monthly

donor through electronic fund transfer (EFT). Lauren said that GDF Executive

Director Ann Glock was very helpful in assisting her family with the donations

made after her dad passed away. The gifts made in his memory supported the

Dragons’ Den on the LAHS athletic campus.

After graduating from LAHS in 1996, Lauren attended Lafayette College and

was a member of the track team. She lived in the Washington D.C. area and

then in Philadelphia, and now makes her home in Conshohocken, PA. Lauren

currently works for CVS Health. Although Lauren has left the Lewisburg area,

she still travels back to visit family and is grateful for her upbringing and

education in Lewisburg. Lauren stated, “I have always been proud to be from

Lewisburg. My education and teachers in Lewisburg prepared me for the

next part of life. This still resonates with me.”

Lauren also noted that the monthly EFT is a great way for busy people to

manage their charitable contributions. She stated, “The EFT makes giving very

simple. The contributions go automatically and at the end of the year I receive

a statement with my total annual donation amount. This makes it easy to pay

it forward to new generations of Green Dragons.”

The foundation is proud to count Lauren among our many alumni donors who

want to give back to the Lewisburg community. If you have any questions

about EFT or memorial donations, please contact Ann Glock at

annglock@greendragonfoundation.org.

It is often said that teachers are the heart of an

educational system. In fact, district staff are key

partners with The Green Dragon Foundation. They

are donors, recipients of funding, and often are our

kindergarten teacher Courtney Jamieson ʼ02. Courtney

and her husband, Kevin ʼ92, have been donors through

LASD’s payroll deduction program since 2011.

In 2021, Courtney presented to the GDF perhaps the most

original proposal for funding. She requested and received

funding for a Russian Tortoise for her classroom. Kazie,

as the tortoise was named, helps teach compassion and

responsibility. During the unit on plants, the class grew

lettuce and carrots to feed Kazie. Kazie has also been

known to help with art projects and loves to visit students

during morning meeting and seat work time.

Over the past few years, Courtney has experienced the

loss of several loved ones, including her grandparents

and father. She requested donations to be given to GDF

in their memory. Through the generosity of relatives and

friends, these contributions helped provide an adjustable

basketball hoop at the Kelly Elementary playground,

a tackling sled for middle school football, planned

improvements to the softball batting cage and of course,

Kazie and her habitat.

Courtney is grateful for the ways GDF contributes not only

to her Kindergarten class but to all students throughout the

district. You can follow Kazie’s classroom adventures on

her Instagram page @kazie_thekindergarten_tortoise.

Why We Support GDF

EPHRATA

NATIONAL BANK

Over the last 14 years Lewisburg students have benefited

greatly from the generosity of businesses that have made

donations through Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement

Tax Credit program. During the 2022-23 school year, GDF

received $60,000 through the EITC program, supporting

innovative programs throughout the Lewisburg Area School

District. Ephrata National Bank has been an EITC partner for

Lewisburg students through its involvement in this program

since 2021.

When asked why Ephrata National Bank chose GDF as a

recipient of its EITC contributions, Danielle Beck, Vice President,

Director of Fiduciary Services, stated, “Ephrata National Bank

is thrilled to partner with GDF through the EITC Program to

assist in their mission of providing cutting-edge facilities,

equitable opportunities, and an advanced curriculum to

provide an environment where students grow, learn, and

thrive. ENB is committed to making a lasting impact on the

communities in which we live and work.” The GDF is very

grateful to ENB for their commitment to high-quality educational

opportunities for all students.

The EITC program, administered by the PA Department of Community & Economic Development,

awards tax credits to eligible businesses that make contributions to educational improvement

organizations like The Green Dragon Foundation. A gift to GDF can provide your company with a

substantial tax credit—75 percent credit (against taxes owed) or, with a written two-year commitment

of equal funding, a 90 percent credit. For more information about the EITC program, please visit:

www.greendragonfoundation.org or call the GDF office at (570) 522-8433.
