Selkirk College Invites Community 

Selkirk College is renewing its strategic plan, and asking for 

public input on how it can best meet regional labour market 

demands and educational aspirations. 

Since the mid-1960s, Selkirk College has been an essential 

economic and cultural driver that contributes more than $450 

million annually to the West Kootenay and Boundary regions. 

It provides a range of post-secondary training and education 

opportunities in six communities and serves over 2,200 fulltime 

students each year. 

“We’re a community college, and any strategy we develop 

has to be informed by local and regional needs,” says Selkirk 

College President Maggie Matear. “This is a really exciting 

opportunity for us—we’ve made significant progress on our 

previous strategic plan, and now we can start to dream about 

how we want to see ourselves in the future.” 

Over the last five years, the Building Remarkable Futures: 

Strategic Plan 2019–2024 has been the reference point for 

ongoing work at the college. Since 2019, much has changed 

both locally and globally. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated 

several developments in the post-secondary sector, such 

as online and hybrid learning, but there has also been a call for 

more flexible credentials, integrated workforce training, rapid 

learning technology advances, shifts in government funding, 

greater diversity, Indigenization and internationalization, and 

the rise of artificial intelligence. “This suggests a need for a 

strategy that supports our ability to address rapid change, 

while maintaining the values, commitments and vision that 

make Selkirk College such a special place,” adds Matear. 

The college has partnered with Higher Education Strategy 

Associates (HESA) to support the strategic plan development 

process. A respected national leader in the post-secondary 

sector, the external consultant provides an objective viewpoint 

that will be able to assess strengths, weaknesses, opportunities 

and challenges. The college has a steering committee made 

up of members of its Board of Governors, the Education and 

College Services divisions, three employee unions, the student 

union, the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion advisory committee, 

and Indigenous Programming & Engagement. 

Externally, the college is appealing to all members of the 

community to take part in a series of virtual and in-person 

sessions over the coming weeks where thoughtful input is welcomed. 

An online survey will also be made available. 

“The public consultation element of this process is crucial to 

final outcomes,” says Matear. “This college belongs to everybody, 

and this is the perfect opportunity to let us know what 

you think.”

Coldest Night Success! 

The leftover chili and fixins were sent to Stepping Stones 

Emergency Shelter. 

The Nelson Coldest Night teams knocked their fundraising 

out of the park. The ‘Chili Champions’ raised $19,320 followed 

by ‘a home for everyone!’ at $6,003. Teams ‘Kootenay Kids 

Society, ‘Hemlock Homes’ (who are also a sponsor), ‘Erica’s 

Avengers’ and ‘Kootenay Rhythym Dragons rounded out the 

top six with over $2,800 each. Joanne Motta raised the most of 

any individual walkers with $18,000, with Aysia Lowell-Guy 

and Andrew Murry at over $3,100 each followed by Randy 

Richmond at $2,250 who also cross-country skied over 100km 

in support of the event. Donations will be accepted at cnoy. 

org/nelson until the end of March. 

The Coldest Night of the Year is a walk-a-thon fundraiser 

that raises awareness and funds for the most vulnerable individuals 

in our community. The funds raised by the teams, 

individuals, and sponsors stay in the community to fund the 

Ready for Home Program operating out of Ward Street Place. 

The Ready for Home program supports those residents to 

navigate healthcare, government documents, and many other 

challenges that allow them to remain safely housed. Nelson 

CARES Society looks forward to celebrating a decade of community 

support and hosting the 11th annual Coldest Night in 

February 2025.

Over 230 individuals on 42 teams registered to walk for the 

Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser on Saturday, Feb 24th 

to support the community and boy did they raise funds. The 

community pledged an almost record-breaking $99,447 with 

a few pledges still to come in. What an amazing show of support! 

Nelson CARES Society wants to thank all the volunteers, 

walkers, donors and sponsors of this event. 

The walkers were greeted by the enthusiastic sounds of the 

Moving Mosaic Samba Band and hit the streets after a few 

encouraging words from Nelson CARES Society Board Chair 

Ron Little, Nelson CARES Society Executive Director Jac 

Nobiss, Nelson CARES Housing Support Worker from Ward 

Street Place Noa Dagan, Nelson-Creston MLA (and CNOY 

volunteer) Brittny Anderson and Acting Mayor Rik Logtenberg 

(and CNOY volunteer) - delivered from the deck of a 

donated Home Hardware flat-deck truck. 

“This is truly a community achievement” said Ron Little. “It 

is the sponsors and donors that have made the success of Ward 

Street Place possible; thanks to all of you.” After a brisk 2km or 

5km walk, all coordinated safely by a crew of volunteer route 

marshals and support 

vehicles (with

Artwalk 2024 

Preparations for 

ArtWalk 2024 have 

begun! Applications 

for artists and venues 

are now open. The 

Nelson & District 

Arts Council (NDAC) 

hopes to make the 

36th annual ArtWalk 

another boom for 

artists and art lovers 

alike; 2023 was an 

overwhelming success, 

with over 40 artists 

participating at 23 

venues around town. 

NDAC is asking business owners to consider becoming an 

ArtWalk venue to support the local arts community as well as 

beautify their walls. The event populates unique venues with 

quality, locally produced artwork chosen by the venue operator 

to fit their walls and business branding. 

After the two opening nights (Saturday, June 29th and Saturday, 

July 27th), art will be available to view at the participating 

venues during regular hours until Sunday, September 

8th. ArtWalk will showcase participating artists at their venues 

alongside a collection of street performances and other 

delights throughout Nelson’s downtown core on the opening 

nights from 6 - 9pm. A new set of artists will have their work 

on display at each opening. 

Professional and emerging artists alike are encouraged 

to apply for ArtWalk; not all applicants will be selected but 

priority will be given to artists showing recent work not previously 

exhibited at ArtWalk or other Nelson venues. NDAC 

will continue to waive participation fees for artists and venues 

for 2024 to support our community’s continued economic 

recovery.
