annual Year End 

Showcase Concert 

Series presented 

by students in 

Selkirk College’s 

Contemporary 

Music & Technology 

Program. 

A March tradition 

on Nelson’s 

Tenth Street Campus, 

the 2024 concert series features seven nights of live 

entertainment on the Shambhala Music & Performance Hall 

stage. Criss-crossing an assortment of genres, a total 14 graduating 

students and their bands of peers will present unique 

music offerings at the intimate venue. 

“So much of what we do is to prepare for the world of live 

performance,” says Jillian McKenna, a music industry veteran 

and member of the program’s faculty team. “Whether 

you are the sound tech, the composer or the drummer, live 

performance happens in the moment and then it’s gone. The 

exciting opportunity of these graduation showcases is for 

these students to put all of their learning into practice. It’s an 

incredibly exhilarating experience that is almost impossible 

to replicate in the classroom.” 

An important element of program outcomes, each student 

is required to put an individual show together from concept 

to when the stage lights dim. Students write the songs 

or develop the arrangement for cover songs, pull the band 

together, consult with peers on lighting and sound, promote 

the show and make it happen on the night of their performance. 

It’s the ultimate test of the two-year program and the 

community is invited to see the results. 

Each night of the Year End Showcase Concert Series features 

two graduating students, each putting on a 30-minute 

set. The schedule, genres and performers are as follows: 

• March 21: Sera Kate (contemporary composer) & Anna 

Isabella (indie pop) 

• March 22: Ben Warkentin (progressive rock) & Yeshua 

Arcos Martinez (classical/prog rock) 

• March 28: Luzura (alt pop) & Andrea Miller (electronic/ 

live band hybrid) 

• April 4: Sofia Maria (R&B soul/contemporary folk) & 

Karissa Hanna 

• April 5: Bella Cat (soul/funk/rap/pop/Latin) & Carter 

Lorenz (neoclassical metal) 

Doors open at 7 pm with the show starting at 7:30 pm. 

Admission is by donation.

of artists as they emerge into their careers as professionals,” 

says McKenna, herself an active touring musician. “This

of darkness and light...

Born in Nelson, BC, violinist Natasha Hall has spent the last decade 

in London, performing with the English Chamber Orchestra, 

the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic. 

She has recently returned to live in her hometown of Nelson. 

Yoomi Kim, pianist, holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 

Piano Performance from the University of Cincinnati where she 

also completed a Master of Music in Conducting. Dr. Kim has 

taught chamber orchestra, choir, and piano at the Lester B. Pearson 

United World College of the Pacific, and she teaches at the 

Victoria Conservatory of Music.

daylight. Labyrinth walking is easy peasy, no experience necessary. 

Just one foot in front of the other as we spiral our way into 

the centre and then out again. Studies have shown that labyrinth 

walking calms the nervous system and promotes a sense of well 

being. 

The Lakeside Labyrinth is located in Nelson’s Rotary Lakeside 

Park near BOB (Big Orange Bridge). It is wheelchair accessible, 

washrooms are nearby and it is always free to walk. 

This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the Lakeside Labyrinth 

and a special celebration walk will be held alongside the 

Summer Solstice walk on Thursday, June 20th. Celebrate the 

20th on the 20th!

Taghum Hall Celebrates Spring 

Truthfully, Taghum Hall is always celebrating, but March and 

April are no exception. Brushes and Lunch, a popular Taghum 

Hall offering, is a chance for folks to learn the fine points of art 

creation with a local painter—with lunch! This time painter, 

potter, and author Lee Rawn will help participants embrace the 

beauty of the blossom in a watercolour 

workshop on Saturday, March 23

A KCDS Farewell 

Kootenay Career 

Development Society 

(KCDS) will 

bid farewell to 

Executive Director 

Jocelyn Carver in 

September 2024. 

After nine years 

in the role, Jocelyn 

plans to take 

some time off 

before moving on 

to her next professional 

endeavour. 

Ms. Carver joined 

the organization 

in 2015, taking 

over the role of Executive Director from KCDS’ founder, Jan 

Wright. During her time, KCDS significantly expanded its 

service region, program offerings, staffing, and partnerships 

with community organizations in the Boundary, West, and 

Central Kootenay regions. KCDS is a regional non-profit 

society incorporated in 2004 and well known as a ‘one-stopshop’ 

for employment services. Currently, KCDS is the prime 

contractor for the WorkBC program in the Boundary, West, 

and Central Kootenay region, providing career development, 

employer, and employment services to thousands of job-seeking 

residents in partnership with seven other community 

organizations. KCDS also delivers a wide variety of specialized 

employment programs focusing on workforce development 

targeted job seekers with barriers to employment, such as 

Headwaters, Career Connect, and SmartLaunch. Information 

about KCDS’ programs can be found at www.kcds.ca. 

The organization is led by a volunteer Board of Directors and 

managed by an Executive Committee, including the Executive 

Director, who is responsible for all day-to-day operations. The 

60+ employees in their Trail, Castlegar, and Nelson service 

areas are committed to the resilience of the communities they 

serve and have created a safe and supportive workplace culture 

that has earned them ‘Great Place to Work’ certification for 

five years in a row. 

“I am excited about the future, for both KCDS and myself 

personally, and grateful the organization is doing so well. Even 

though I’m looking forward to my next adventure, I’ll be sad 

to leave KCDS and its wonderful network of partner organizations.

organization has attracted a strong team and great programs, 

and we are looking forward to launching a new strategic plan 

this Spring. We are sad to see Jocelyn go, but we are thankful 

for the strong position KCDS has achieved during her time as 

Executive Director. Our Board is excited to support our next 

Executive Director as they make their unique contribution to 

KCDS in the coming years,” says Sheila Achilles, Board Chair.

The Trail Arts Council presents a celebration of family, food, 

and music in Arts Club’s hilariously heartwarming musical 

“Made in Italy” at The Bailey Theatre on March 30 at 7:30 pm. 

Francesco Mantini is a teen struggling to find his place in 

Jasper, Alberta. Tired of living up to his traditional Italian-immigrant 

father’s expectations, and bullying by his peers, he reinvents 

himself as Frank Martin: crooner and ladies’ man. 

Weaving the electrifying music of the 1970s with classic Italian 

tunes, this five-time Jessie Award–nominated one-man show 

is equal parts comedy, music, and heart as father and son find 

themselves despite their differences. Mature themes and strong

Club Theatre Production based on The Western Canada Theatre

projects exemplify how organizations are being proactive when 

it comes to ensuring safety when emergency situations arise,” 

said Will Nixon, Senior Manager, Delivery of Benefits, Columbia 

Basin Trust. “We’re pleased to support those who are rising to 

the challenges of climate change and taking steps to ensure the 

health and resilience of people and places.” 

With 23 projects previously supported in 2021 and 2022, 

the Trust has provided nearly $3 million to help communities 

strengthen their emergency operations centres and create emergency 

gathering spaces for residents, with access to necessities 

like power, filtered air, air conditioning, emergency equipment 

and emergency supplies. 

The Village of Kaslo is installing a back-up generator, heat 

pumps and an air filtration system in the local arena, which 

serves as the community’s emergency reception centre. It is also 

conducting an accessibility assessment and preparing to redevelop 

the arena’s kitchen. “There is a history of devastating wildfires, 

floods and landslides in the area dating back to the earliest 

days of settlement,” said Suzan Hewat, Mayor. “The Kaslo Arena 

will not only serve as a safe haven for area residents during such

The 2023-24 season was another 

season of growth for the Kaslo 

and District Minor Hockey Association. 

Our U7 team focused 

on fundamental skating skills and 

having fun on the ice. The U9 

team spent time on powerskating 

and basics of puck handling, passing, 

and learning positions; and 

enjoyed exhibition games against 

Nakusp, Nelson and Castlegar 

The U11s showed huge growth 

as they competed against 14 

other teams in the West Kootenay 

League. They placed 3rd in their 

division at playoffs, which they 

kicked off with a tie game in front 

of their cheering fans in Kaslo! 

We wish all our hockey families 

a relaxing off season and we’ll see 

you at the rink next fall!

Majestic Mountain Landscapes 

New landscape paintings 

are on display at the Nelson 

Public Library by Nelson 

artist Abby Wilson. Her 

feature piece “Valhalla Traverse’’ 

is a triptych (three 

connecting panels) that 

links popular hiking trails 

from Valhalla Provincial 

Park into a panoramic 

scene. It practically glows off the walls with sunset infused light. 

Other paintings capture the Kootenay and Rocky mountains 

with stylized lines and inventive colours. Abby is the author 

of the much anticipated, forthcoming West Kootenay Hiking 

guidebook and her work is heavily inspired by local hiking 

trails and viewpoints. 

Abby Wilson paints her love of these mountains into bright, 

bold acrylic landscapes, exploring how geometry aligns with 

natural geology. Abby spends the summers hiking, bringing 

her sketchbook with her before eventually moving to the studio. 

When asked about her inspiration, she says, “I work to 

develop paintings that focus on the majesty of the mountain 

landscapes. I use colour and shape to push the structure of the 

mountain towards the surreal, striving to capture the feelings 

of otherworldly bliss and awe that comes with exploring these 

wild places.” Abby’s work is held in private collections in Canada, 

the US, and Europe. She sells her artwork over her website 

and the original works displayed in the library are also for sale. 

The exhibition continues until the end of April.

Artwalk 2024 

Preparations for ArtWalk 2024 have begun! Applications for 

artists and venues are now open. The Nelson & District Arts 

Council (NDAC) hopes to make the 36th annual ArtWalk 

another boom for artists and art lovers alike; 2023 was an overwhelming 

success, with over 40 artists participating at 23 venues 

around town. 

NDAC is asking business owners to consider becoming an 

ArtWalk venue to support the local arts community as well as 

beautify their walls. The event populates unique venues with 

quality, locally produced artwork chosen by the venue operator 

to fit their walls and business branding. 

After the two opening nights (Saturday, June 29th and Saturday, 

July 27th), art will be available to view at the participating 

venues during regular hours until Sunday, September 8th. Art- 

Walk will showcase participating artists at their venues alongside 

a collection of street performances and other delights throughout 

Nelson’s downtown core on the opening nights from 6 - 9pm. A 

new set of artists will have their work on display at each opening. 

Professional and emerging artists alike are encouraged to 

apply for ArtWalk; not all applicants will be selected but priority 

will be given to artists showing recent work not previously exhibited 

at ArtWalk or other Nelson venues. NDAC will continue to 

waive participation fees for artists and venues for 2024 to support 

our community’s continued economic recovery.

Arnold (Sonny) Norberg 

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of 

Arnold (Sonny) Norberg at the age of 95 years. 

Dad is survived by his son Doug (Ingeli) and daughter 

Denise (Don) Wasnik, Grandchildren: Aaron, Casey 

(Simon) Ritchie, Nicholas (Elina), Johannes (Mikaela), 

Adam (Lindsy), Michelle (Cory) Landry, Great Grandchildren: 

Hayden, Matthew, Ivan, Piper and Joar. He is 

pre-deceased by his wife Phylis, oldest son Wayne and 

his 4 younger brothers: Ray, Gerald, Duane & David. 

Dad was born and raised in Kaslo, BC and surrounding 

areas. He played many sports growing up including 

hockey (using catalogues as pads), baseball (a feared 

and admired left-handed pitcher), he enjoyed hunting 

& fishing and was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. 

He met and married his beautiful wife Phylis in Kaslo 

and had their 2 sons there before moving to Prince 

Rupert for work in the Pulp Mill. While there they had 

Denise then moved on to Prince George. Dad worked 

for Canfor, helping to start up both PG Pulp and Intercon 

Pulp. He retired from Canfor as a well-respected 

Supervisor. He enjoyed traveling, golfing, curling, being 

a hunting guide, having fun with his kids, Grandkids & 

Great Grandkids. 

He had so many stories to tell about his life and his experiences, 

they are unforgettable. He will be missed by 

us all. A celebration of life will be in Kaslo, BC, in mid- 

May.

PULP Group Exhibition 

Throughout the last 2,000 years, paper has played a crucial 

role in collecting and sharing information and ideas and has 

allowed us a window into the past. In the modern world, where 

digital information is consumed ad nauseam, the artists in 

PULP are embracing the poetic simplicity of paper, and wielding 

its unparalleled ability to capture emotion, texture, data, 

knowledge, and imagination. PULP is the latest iteration in a 

series of mediumcentric group exhibitions, focused on a common 

theme – in this case, paper – that highlights each artist’s 

interpretation of the medium. PULP opens Friday, April 5 at 

the Nelson Museum, Archives & Gallery, and runs through 

July 27. 

In the hands of artists from across Canada, the artworks that 

embody PULP speak to personal, regional, socio-political, and 

historic symbology; seen in the feminist forms of Gathie Falk 

and Badanna Zack, with an Indigenous perspective through 

Robert Lawrence Moore (Larry) 

November 1st, 1955 – October 26th, 2023 

On the night of October 26th, 2023, 

Larry passed away peacefully with his 

beloved by his side at the Victorian 

Community Health Centre in Kaslo, 

BC. He was 67 years old when his battle 

with esophageal cancer ended. 

Born on November 1, 1955, in Kingston, 

Ontario to Marilyn and Bill Moore, 

Larry grew up with his brothers, Tony 

and David. He attended school in Ignace, 

Ontario, Calgary, Alberta and 

Victoria, BC. 

Larry’s energy and enthusiasm seemed 

boundless. He lived with an air of spontaneity 

but was steadfast in his belief 

and values. He was a mystic and seeker 

at heart, inspired by the likes of George 

Harrison and Bruce Lee. He acknowledged 

his many teachers, and none 

touched him more profoundly than 

those who shared their indigenous wisdom 

and traditions with him. Fierce in 

his support of what he knew to be right, 

he did not turn away from telling truth 

to power. In this, he was a bit of a contradiction 

- while openly and frequently 

confronting authority, much of his truth 

telling and advocacy was done doggedly 

and quietly. To many of his friends, he 

was a true ally and a beacon of hope. 

Larry was an intelligent and creative 

man who did good work with both his 

hands and his heart. Throughout his 

life, he was a draftsman, painter of high 

rises, ski school instructor and manager, 

high end audio salesman, trapper, 

carpenter, acoustic treatment designer 

and business owner. In mid-life, Larry 

devoted himself to Restorative Justice, 

working as a facilitator and a prison volunteer 

with the Alternatives to Violence 

Project and the Native Brotherhood. 

Larry with his partner Cathie Douglas 

co-founded Heartspeak Productions 

and produced a number of conceptually 

innovative and groundbreaking videos 

to promote awareness and understanding 

of Restorative and Aboriginal 

Justice. Larry’s accomplishments were 

widely recognized. He received the Ron 

Wiebe Award, a national restorative 

justice award presented annually by the 

Correctional Service of Canada. The 

Simon Fraser University Hummingbird 

Award sponsored by the John Howard 

Society was especially meaningful to 

him. 

Larry was a skilled craftsman and found 

joy and solace in building a cedar strip 

kayak, a couple of paddleboards and a 

truck canopy. Larry loved and thoroughly 

enjoyed hanging with his feline 

best buddies, Little One and Big Bear, 

who have also sadly passed recently. His 

happiest places were on the lake fishing 

in his kayak and navigating forest trails 

on his ebike. He never failed to entice 

others to join in his adventures. In later 

years, Larry was fascinated by the 

healing power of sound and music and 

spent his days crafting and learning to 

play a variety of instruments. In true 

Larry spirit, his enthusiasm and the 

fruits of his labour were happily shared 

with friends and family. 

Larry was predeceased by his father, Bill 

Moore, and father-in-law Bob Douglas. 

Larry leaves behind his love and 

best friend Cathie Douglas, his mother 

Marilyn Moore, brothers Tony (Linda) 

and David (Isabel), mother-in-law Barb 

Douglas, sister-in-law Laura Douglas, 

the work of Edward Poitras, through the revolt and response of 

Mia Feuer, the masks of Miya Turnbull, and the poetic/historical 

approach of Susan Andrews Grace. 

For Fay and the Nelson Museum, the exploration of medium-centric 

exhibitions began in 2018 with LOST THREAD, 

which focused on textiles, followed by WORD (2019 – textbased), 

THROWN (2021 – clay), and SHUTTER (2022 – photography). 

With generous support from the Canada Council 

for the Arts, the Nelson Museum has plans to continue the 

series into 2026. 

Edward Poitras, Mia Feuer, and Susan Andrews Grace will 

be attending the opening reception on Friday, April 5, for an 

artist talk and panel discussion about the exhibition. The opening
