Mass
highlights
importance
of justice
The annual Red Mass traditionally marks the
beginning of the legal year, and judges, barristers,
politicians, and clergy, many in wigs and colourful
robes, filled Parramatta's St Patrick's Cathedral on
5 February for this year's event.
This centuries-old tradition, dating back to 1245 in
Paris, was first celebrated in Sydney in 1931 and
found a unique home in Parramatta in 2019 as
the only non-metropolitan diocese in Australia to
celebrate the Mass.
At this year’s Red Mass Bishop Vincent Long OFM
Conv, Bishop of Parramatta, emphasised the
importance of upholding justice and the rule of
law in challenging times, urging Christian wisdom
and integrity.
President of the Parramatta and District Law
Society Rebecca Hegarty, and Susan Carter MLC,
stressed the Red Mass's unifying role despite
diverse political views. Dr Hugh McDermott,
Parliamentary Secretary to the NSW Attorney
General, highlighted that the gathering “brings
together those who believe in social justice”.
The event served as a call to action for legal
professionals to work towards a better future,
while reminding everyone of their shared pursuit
of justice.
