4 I OPINION I March 20, 2024 WEST NEWSMAGAZINE @WESTNEWSMAG WESTNEWSMAGAZINE.COM LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Food sales tax As a proud citizen of Chesterfield who is very aware of the extremely conservative, money-conscious City Council, I find comments made by Dr. Dennis Ganahl and the recent bill put forth by Rep. Ben Keathley very disappointing. Chesterfield citizens have been repeatedly informed that the main source of revenue is sales tax, as the city collects no property tax. No one likes to pay taxes, but the reality is that taxes pay for services the city provides. The proposed stopping of sales tax on food would decrease city revenue from sales tax by an estimated 25%. Ganahl and Keathley obviously have not studied the city’s expenditures. City council members earn $500 per month, the mayor earns $1,000 per month (gross pay), salaries which have not changed in 35 years. The only main expenditure spent on a select group is the annual volunteer dinner. Money is not squandered and criticisms should be based on fact. It’s easy for politicians to put forth legislation that makes them sound good, but that same legislation can be quite damaging to the citizenry. Louise Nation In ballot language I read the article on the propositions (“On the Ballot: The Propositions,” March 6) that stated “in ballot language.” I think all propositions for all elections should be in “voter language” so voters know what they are voting for and not have to guess what they are voting for. If someone could decipher proposition language and show the proposition wordage in layman’s terms it would be so much easier to make an informed decision.
