WAITING
FOR LA TRAVIATA
“La traviata is one of the first operas
I fell in love with, my first full opera
production as an assistant conductor.
It is still one of the most exciting and
heart-rending pieces I know. From the
very first notes, we sense that tragedy
will ensue. The opera swings between
huge, thrilling party scenes and
incredibly intimate, fragile moments.
It is always an exciting challenge
to bring these contrasts to life in
performance. It feels particularly
fitting that my INO debut is in this
opera, in the same theatre where
I first worked on it.”
by Jean-Charles
Olivier, ca 1845.
“With exquisite musical mastery Verdi
poured all his compassion, humanity
and support for women, victims
of a harsh patriarchal society, into
his wonderful, heart-breaking La
traviata. The multi-faceted Violetta,
coquette, vamp, courtesan, dreamer,
pragmatist, laughs at all the men who
fall at her feet – until the moment she
is overwhelmed by the sincerity of a
young man, and falls in love. Her story
shows both the joy and fragility of
human existence and throws light on
the harsh realities of a society full of
inequality and hypocrisy.”
OLIVIA FUCHS, DIRECTOR
“INO’s first La traviata is a thrilling
prospect, a tragic tale exquisitely told
in Verdi’s emotional score. I never
cease to marvel at the beauty of
the arias, while the story and tragic
ending can wring the stoniest heart.”
