THERE WAS a sea of colour 

and a day of fun at Te Raekura 

Redcliffs School’s first ever 

Colour Run. 

Pupils took part in the 

fundraiser for the school which 

involved the children running 

through obstacle courses while 

being doused in coloured dye. 

“Our students loved it. We 

had heaps of parents, caregivers 

and whānau at the event who 

joined in on the ‘colouring’ of 

the kids as they ran by,” said 

principal Nick Leith. 

Funds raised will go towards 

upgraded digital devices. 

“This will provide muchneeded 

funds to support our 

vision for students to have more 

access.” 

Leith said pupils were so 

enthusiastic they ran further 

than they would on a typical 

cross-country day. 

“The students constructed the 

course which took our runners 

through the whole front of our 

school, including a few jumps 

and a ‘get wet’ section. So 

they had a big part in its 

organisation.” 

The school was inspired 

by other colour runs at other 

schools. Leith said holding a 

sporty, pupil-led event helped 

bring more attention to the 

fundraiser from parents. 

After a lot of hard work, 

pupils had a well-earned 

sausage sizzle, ice cream and 

lollies from local businesses. 

“Can we do it again next 

year,” was the main refrain as 

the colourful day drew to a 

close.

THERE APPEARS to be no end 

in sight for residents forced to 

put up with the foul stench being 

emitted from Bromley’s firedamaged 

wastewater treatment 

plant. 

The city council is waiting for 

an insurance payout before it can 

repair the plant. 

Two filters at the plant were 

destroyed during a fire in 

November 2021, releasing a 

pungent and rotten stench across 

the city. 

Residents have complained 

about nausea, headaches, 

worsening asthma, and 

deteriorating mental health due 

to the smell. 

A temporary system was put 

in place, but the vile odour still 

remains. 

At a public meeting, Mayor 

Phil Mauger told residents delays 

to the council’s insurance payout 

was holding up progress at the 

treatment plant. 

“One of the things we’re doing 

– which is causing us a bit of 

grief – is we’re waiting for our 

insurance payout and that might 

be one month, two months, three 

months, so that’s getting worked 

on at the moment.”

Sumner surfers clinch top spots

surfing legend after placing first in the mens final for the 

Single Fin Mingle. He beat long time Sumner surfing great 

and former Mingle winner Luke O’Neill.

the Single Fin Mingle coming in 

first and second place respectively 

in the men’s longboarding 

competition. 

Onlookers and competitors 

were lucky to have great weather 

and waves over Friday and 

Saturday, said festival director 

Ambrose McNeill. 

“Jack is just such a fierce 

competitor. He is unrelenting in 

hunting for the right waves and 

won’t stop until he gets the score 

he needs.” 

In a surprise outcome, only 

New Zealanders made it to 

the men’s final despite tough 

competition from successful 

international surfers Kai Ellice- 

Flint and Thomas Bexon. 

“If you told me there were going 

to be only New Zealanders in the 

final before the event, I would 

have said that’s pretty unlikely. So 

it was very special,” McNeill said. 

Tyro clinched the top spot 

with a heat total of 15.040 points 

compared to O’Neill’s 13.66. 

Each wave surfed was scored 

out of 10 with the surfer’s top two 

scores combined for their final 

total. 

McNeill said Tyro was a 

favourite after the 17-year-old’s 

victory at the Noosa Longboard 

Festival of Surfing in Queensland,

but it was no sure bet.

Nature inspires artists to tackle 

climate change with new trail 

AN OUTDOOR gallery, 

featuring artists young and 

old, is breathing life into an old 

school site. 

The new A-MAZE-INK art 

trail is being developed by the 

Climate Action Campus, with 

assistance from the city council 

graffiti team. It takes place at the 

former Avonside Girls’ High site. 

“We feel incredibly privileged 

to be able to come to work each 

day and be greeted by beautiful 

art from so many diverse 

artists, enhancing our space,” 

campus learning advisor Rachel 

Cummins said. 

The oldest artist who 

responded to the call-out was 

82-year-old Reng Yu Chen – who 

goes by Mr Chen. 

His pink and blue mural 

featuring lotus and swans takes 

up the back wall of an old classroom, 

and is the first thing you 

see when you step foot into the 

grounds from Avonside Drive. 

“I wanted to paint beautiful 

life, flowers, and swans. The lotus 

is a sign of beauty and kindness 

in Asian culture,” Mr Chen 

explained through a translator. 

“I love Christchurch. I love the 

life here, the people here, the city, 

the water, the air, the sunshine, 

and the climate.” 

Seventeen-year-old Amelia 

Green is one of the youngest 

artists featured in the series. Her 

lifelike renditions of native New 

Zealand birds cover an otherwise 

bland toilet block. 

“I’m on a gap year thinking 

about what I want to do for a 

career, and I thought how can I 

put myself out there as an artist. 

I’m not the type of person who 

can just sit around,” Amelia said. 

“I was inspired by nature, 

it’s an important part of New 

Zealand culture. I had a lady 

walk past recently and she 

got emotional because the tui 

reminded her of her mum who 

had passed away. That was 

special.” 

Council graffiti co-ordinator 

Mel Hillier said the trail 

showcased the value of art. 

“The MAZE is showcasing 

the art community by valuing 

the voices of artists of every age 

and encouraging creativity with 

another opportunity to celebrate 

art in our city,” she said. 

“Giant wall murals of beauty 

painted by artists of every genre 

with their varied perceptions of 

treasuring and protecting the 

climate are everywhere.” 

What is the Climate Action 

Campus? 

The campus offers a place 

to learn, develop and initiate 

climate change ideas and 

actions. It has more than 1000 

students and not-for-profits 

working at it every week. 

Tunnel houses, bee hives, 

a bush kindy, butterfly and 

skink habitats, and vegetable 

gardens are just a few of the 

projects onsite.

City councillor Sam MacDonald

settlement. 

“As soon as we can do that we 

will go public with it, so everyone

The Cashmere Bowling 

Club is celebrating 

its centenary. The 

club looks back on its 

history 

• On April 27, 1922 the 

Cashmere Hills Recreation Club 

Ltd was officially registered (with 

capital of £5,000), and the next 

day (April 28, 1922) a meeting 

of “Provisional Directors” was 

held to instigate formation of the 

Club. This entity was to provide 

facilities for tennis, croquet and 

lawn bowls. 

• As at March 1926, the 

Recreation Cub had 28 bowls 

members (plus 187 tennis and 28 

croquet members). 

• The land in the Cashmere 

Valley for the Recreation Club 

was purchased (for £1,825) on 

March 31, 1927. 

• Between 1935 and 1939, 

prospects for the recreation club 

were in doubt due to rising costs 

and diminishing memberships. 

• On April 17, 1939 the 

recreation club was “officially 

wound up”, and on the May 

1, 1939 the Heathcote County 

Council took over responsibility 

for the club. 

• Cashmere Bowling Club 

committee meeting minutes of 

March 3, 1947 state “that ladies 

be granted use of green etc on 6 

March 1947”. 

• The Recreation Club annual 

meeting of June 16, 1959 decided

the Cashmere Bowling Club 

Inc. was registered as an 

Incorporated Society. 

• On July 2, 1966, the 

Executive of the (men’s) 

Cashmere Bowling Club 

was authorised to form the 

Cashmere Women’s Bowling 

Club (maximum 32 members, 

limited to wives of existing male 

members). 

• On October 18, 1966, the 

Cashmere Women’s Bowling 

Club was officially opened. 

• On April 19, 1997, a special 

general meeting of the Cashmere 

Bowling Club approved a new 

constitution that combined the 

men’s and women’s clubs into 

the Cashmere Bowling Club Inc. 

• As of March 2024 there are 

approximately 75 full and social

A curious mind opens the door to 

learning something new. Whether its 

picking up a new hobby, flexing a dormant 

creative muscle, or learning a language or 

professional skills needed for employment 

or personal fulfilment, the benefits of 

lifelong learning are numerous. 

Risingholme has been developing and 

delivering a range of community education 

courses for 80 years, allowing tens of 

thousands of learners the opportunity to 

upskill, create, and learn something new. 

Our courses cover a range of subjects 

from pottery to art, fabric and wood 

crafts, languages, health & wellbeing and 

foundation courses. Although our course 

programme often changes in response 

to local needs with new courses being 

developed every year, some popular courses 

such as sewing, woodwork, and pottery 

have stood the test of time and have run 

continually since the 1940s! 

Part of our success as a community 

education organisation has been the ability 

to design courses that are flexible and 

accessible, making it easy for you to jump 

into learning at whatever age and stage 

of life you are in. We offer day and night 

classes across three locations city-wide. Our 

courses range from one-day workshops 

through to longer 8 week courses meaning 

that learning can fit around busy modern 

schedules. 

When Risingholme was gifted to 

the people of Christchurch in 1943 by 

local philanthropist J.R McKenzie, it 

was envisioned that it would become an 

important hub for the “health, amusement, 

and instruction of the public”. 80 years on, 

this social purpose remains at the heart 

of Risingholme as learning and leisure 

are combined in the accessible, flexible, 

and diverse programme of offerings we 

continue to run. 

Join us throughout the year as we 

celebrate our big 80th with events across 

the year that reflect on our history as an 

organisation and look forward to the 

future of lifelong learning in Ōtautahi 

Christchurch. We are partnering with local 

organisations to bring together exciting 

community events that foster connection,

New life for neglected garden

COMMUNITY gardeners in 

New Brighton have been given 

the challenge of restoring an 

eight-year-old sensory garden. 

The space was originally 

designed by Smile Dial NZ to 

enable children and people with 

disabilities to be able to feel, 

smell, see, taste and hear the 

garden.

Funding and administration 

manager Lin Klenner said visitors 

might start getting to know Vic.

shy, they might feel like coming 

into the community garden as 

well.” 

The restoration process has 

started slowly, with the gardeners 

cutting through tall bushes.

chainsaw to demolish some of the 

overgrown trees.

Public consultation on 

the Fire and Emergency levy 

for 2026—2029 

Fire and Emergency New Zealand has opened public consultation 

on our proposed levies for the period 1 July 2026—30 June 2029. 

Fire and Emergency is funded almost entirely through levies on eligible 

insurance policies. When the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act 2017 came 

into effect a transitional levy funded the new organisation until the new levy 

arrangements, under Part 3 of the Act, could be brought in. The new levy will 

take effect on 1 July 2026. 

Before introducing the new levy arrangements, we are required to consult on the 

proposed levies and the activities we plan to undertake during the levy period. 

To support consultation on the levy arrangements for the period 

1 July 2026—30 June 2029, a discussion document on our website sets out: 

• the activities we propose to undertake over the levy period and the 

estimated costs of delivering these activities, 

• our proposed levy rates, and 

• the assumptions we have made in estimating our costs and the steps 

involved calculating the proposed levy rates. 

We welcome submissions from levy payers, insurance policy holders, their 

representatives and interested members of the public on our proposals to help 

inform the Government’s decisions on the final levies for 2026—2029.

delicious, light and 

tender meatballs 

Quinoa & Chicken Meatballs in a 

Tomato Sauce 

Serves 4 

GLUTEN-FREE quinoa is a great 

addition to these chicken meatballs, as it 

acts as a binding ingredient, helping to 

hold the meatballs together (in place of 

the usual breadcrumbs that most recipes 

use for this purpose) producing lovely 

light and tender meatballs. 

Ingredients 

Meatballs 

1/2 cup Alison’s Pantry Quinoa, plus 

extra to serve 

400g chicken mince 

1 small onion, grated 

2 garlic cloves, crushed 

1/4 tsp dried chilli flakes 

1/4 cup chopped parsley, plus more for 

garnish 

1 medium courgette, grated 

Salt and freshly ground black pepper 

1/3 cup Alison’s Pantry Pinenuts, toasted, 

to garnish 

Tomato sauce 

2 tbsp olive oil 

1 small onion, finely diced 

500ml tomato puree 

Method 

• Place quinoa in a fine sieve and rinse 

under cold running water for 1 minute. 

Cook rinsed quinoa in a pot of boiling 

water for 12-15 minutes until tender to 

the bite. Drain well and set aside to cool. 

• Preheat oven to 200°C. In a large bowl, 

place chicken, quinoa, onion, garlic, chilli 

and parsley. Squeeze excess moisture 

from grated courgette; add courgette to 

the bowl. Season with salt and pepper 

and mix well to combine. 

• With damp hands (to stop the mixture 

sticking), take one tablespoon of mixture 

and roll into a ball. Repeat until you have

with baking paper, leaving space between 

them. Bake for 20 minutes until lightly 

browned and firm. 

• At the same time, heat oil in a saucepan. 

Add onion and cook over a medium heat 

for 5 minutes. Add tomato puree and 

simmer for 10 minutes. Taste and adjust 

seasoning with salt and pepper. 

• Once meatballs are cooked, transfer 

them to the tomato sauce and gently stir 

to coat. Scatter with parsley and pine 

nuts and serve with extra cooked quinoa 

or pasta, and vegetables or a green salad, 

as preferred. 

Tip: Make sure you use a fine sieve to 

rinse the quinoa otherwise the tiny 

grains of quinoa will fall through the 

coarse holes in the sieve and be lost down 

the sink.

The Christian Education Network 

Working together for the good of students and 

families has been a successful recipe for Christian 

Integrated Schools in Christchurch. 

The Christian Education Network has been in 

existence for over ten years. Aidanfield Christian 

School, Emmanuel Christian School, Hillview 

Christian School, and Middleton Grange School 

decided in 2005 that there was much to be 

gained by working together cooperatively. They 

recognised opportunities to share successful 

teaching practice, curriculum development 

initiatives across a wide spectrum of school 

operations as well as cooperatively strengthening 

their special Christian Character. They recognised 

that their ability to serve students and families was 

greatly enhanced by working together in a close 

and trusting relationship. 

The success of the network has seen other schools 

wanting to join in. Early in the piece Rangiora 

New Life School became part of the network. The 

schools joined together to support the genesis of 

Ashburton Christian School and also culminated 

in with the opening of Rolleston Christian School 

in 2015. 

The schools have developed interlocking 

enrolment schemes which assists in providing 

transparent pathways in Christian education from 

new entrant through to Year 13. 

A further strength has been a cooperative 

engagement with the Ministry of Education 

who have been pivotal in assisting the network’s

times of whānau stress or crisis. On 

average just 17 of these beds are filled 

due to resourcing constraints. 

Every empty bed is a missed 

opportunity to support a child in need.

tamariki a safe place to sleep. 

Cholmondeley Children’s Centre provides 

short term emergency or planned respite care 

for tamariki when they need extra support due 

to complications at home. 

Cholmondeley is an independent charity 

and costs just under $3,000,000 per year to 

run. 20% of this figure is met by Government 

funding, and the remaining 80% comes from 

the generous support of the Canterbury
