there we have it - the senior
league came to an end with a
series of grand finals held on
Saturday, 23rd March on our home turf.
Whirlwinds took on Simba to compete
for Div 1 title, in the second year
running. Having only lost by a single
point last year, it remained a sore spot
but also fuel for fire for the young and
ambitious Whirlies.
The first few minutes saw Simba take
the lead by scoring the first couple of
goals. Rattled but undeterred by the
unfavoured start, Whirlies remained
composed to give Simba all they had
practised during the season. The first
quarter’s score: Whirlwinds 9-10 Simba.
Pep talk by coach Karin and support
(and screams) from the stands brought
on an exciting 2nd quarter, where Simba
and Whirlies went neck to neck, goal
after goal in both ends of the court.
Half time: Whirlwinds 19-18 Simba.
The team remained unchanged during
the match. A tough but essential call
from coach Karin - where consistency
in team dynamics outweighed putting
in fresh legs. As Whirlies worked hard
across the court, for a non-contact
sport, bodies slammed into one
another, umpires handed out warnings
and cautions. By the 3rd quarter,
Whirlies pulled ahead: 26-20 Simba.
Not resting on their laurels, Whirlies
continued to battle and gave their all -
despite energy beginning to wane and
questionable plays from the opponents
went unnoticed by the umpire. Only
until the last 3 minutes of the last
quarter did Whirlwinds pulled ahead
at a comfortable pace, with the buzzer
concluding the end of the match,
defining Whirlwinds champions of Div
1: 34-25 Simba.

who was awarded MVP - hand picked
by a selection panel.
