editorinchief | LETTER
It gets me every time. Without fail when
the editorial team considers projects for our annual Before + After issue, I admire the
“after” photos but think my wife and I could never do that at home because our rooms
are a different size/shape/orientation/whatever. Then I look at the “before” photos and
realize they look exactly like home.
The difference is that a designer has seen the rooms through different eyes and
amplified the good points, minimized the bad ones and pulled from their training and
experience to create comfortable, functional, beautiful spaces that most of us would
have trouble envisioning ourselves.
That’s why I always find our June/July Before + After Issue particularly inspiring.
Designer Ingrid Bergman, for example, turned a Tenafly home with dated, traditional
bones into a modern eclectic masterpiece. Bergman accomplished it by choosing a
lighter palette, simpler lines, varied textures and statement lighting for New York City
apartment dwellers who wanted more space to spread out and entertain (“Entertaining
Possibilities,” page 38).
At a Mendham home, designers Marissa Sauer and Lauren Collette of Design MACs added modern
industrial flair to the kitchen, living area and adjacent spaces by reimagining layouts and how the rooms
are used (“Makeover Magic,” page 46).
It’s always a treat to go inside a design professional’s own residence, so we hope you will enjoy reading
how architect Anastasia Harrison updated her early-20th-century home in Westfield, honoring the
historical elements but making it more suited to her 21st-century family (“Passion Project,” page 52).
Also in Westfield, we showcase a hard-to-beat 20th wedding anniversary gift that Peter Brooks of Peter
Brooks Stone Works Inc. gave his wife, Jessica: a new dining room designed by Mimi & Hill featuring a
marble table he made himself (“Rock Stars,” page 61).
And don’t miss our Architecture | Build story in this issue. We feature a Modern Farmhouse-style home
that McHugh Architecture designed on a quiet, empty lot at the end of a street in picturesque Spring Lake
(“Tucked Away,” page 24) or the latest coastal-inspired furnishings introduced just in time for summer
enjoyment (“Seafaring Style,” page 22).
As you head to the ocean, the lake or the mountains this summer, we hope you will take us along in print
or online and decide which projects will inspire your next home-design project.
o contrast with the busy nature
of today’s fast-paced culture, the
homeowners sought a place where
they could live simply with the comfort of modern
conveniences,” architect Brendan McHugh says of
his clients, Tom and Myra Doyle. “They found
that place on a quiet, empty lot nestled at the end
of a street in the picturesque town of Spring Lake.”
McHugh, president and owner of Manasquanbased
McHugh Architecture, along with colleague
Lara Garnant, created a space that would meet the
Doyles’ needs indoors and out.
As far as aesthetic, Garnant says, “The clients
were attracted to a Modern Farmhouse style,
blending traditional farmhouse elements with
some more contemporary design features.”
Tucked Away
A Spring Lake home makes the most of an unusual lot
ARCHITECTURE BY BRENDAN MCHUGH, AIA, NCARB, AND LARA GARNANT, ASSOCIATE AIA
This version of Modern Farmhouse style
features an exaggerated gable at right and
dormers that break through the roofline.

stylenewjersey | EXPERT ADVICE
FIRST FLOOR
SECOND FLOOR
L-shaped front porch and the board-and-batten siding. We added a
modern twist with the exaggerated front gable-end that’s steeper than the
traditional 45-degree angle. Inside, we used a shiplap finish for the walls,
rustic wood accents, wide plank floors and a farmhouse sink against a
simple color palette that’s more modern and muted. This allows the black
windows, with their thin profile and mullions, to pop.
DNJ: You used two kinds of siding. What was the inspiration for that decision?
LARA GARNANT: We were looking at the whole composition of the
exterior. By adding a mix of textures, we could create a subtle layer of
interest while respecting the simplicity of the overall geometry. The
verticality of the board-and-batten siding also helps differentiate the end
portions of the exterior from the horizontal lap siding at the center as well
as from other horizontal elements such as the front porch roof.
DNJ: Discuss the unique roofline above and between the second-floor windows.
BM: The design concept was to let a lot of natural light into the entry.
We also wanted to give the two-story foyer a really vertical feel. By
breaking through the roofline with windows and wall dormers, we
could accomplish both of those goals while also adding drama to the
exterior composition.
DNJ: What features were the owners looking for in their new home?
LG: The clients wanted a dramatic entryway that emphasized the full
height of the structure. As mentioned, we created a two-story foyer
that brings in an abundance of light. The staircase, with its simple,
black metal railing, becomes an accent to the neutral color palette in
the space. They also wanted an open-concept floor plan with a familystyle
kitchen.
“By not attaching the garage to the house, we were able to maximize the width of
the home. We tucked the garage slightly behind and oriented the house to maximize
the interior square footage and optimize the rear and front outdoor spaces,” Lara
Garnant explains.
Mature trees along the side of the home allow for privacy on the rear patio.
26 June/July 2024

stylenewjersey | EXPERT ADVICE
“The kitchen features an L-shaped island that integrates a fixed bench for an eat-in table to promote family-style
dining,” architect Brendan McHugh says. “It’s a casual approach to an eat-in area that’s very convenient with its
proximity to food-prep and clean-up areas.”
Pendant lights align with the windows in the
double-height entryway.
The third item on the client’s wish list was a double-sided woodburning
fireplace in the living room that could be enjoyed from inside
and outside. A unique feature of this fireplace is that it not only heats
from its single-point location, but it also has ductwork that extends into
the ceiling and distributes heat to the whole open-concept living space,
making it very efficient and functional.
DNJ: Did the project present any challenges? How did you address them?
BM: There were several logistical issues that arose as a result of the
position of the lot. The property had been subdivided from a larger piece
of land so it lacked certain functional characteristics. For example, the
street “dead ends” at the side edge rather than the front of the property;
if this were a standard cul-de-sac, the home would face the street. So
designs for laying out the house and the traffic flow for vehicles on
the site needed to be thought out creatively. We handled this unique
situation by positioning the driveway to allow entry from the road. The
driveway leads to the home’s side entry, mudroom, pantry and kitchen.
LG: By creating a turn-around area at the driveway entrance, we could
place the length of the driveway tightly along the same side of the
property. This gave us the ability to establish more functional play
areas at the front and back of the house; it also allowed us to keep the
mature evergreen tree screen, thus enhancing the semiprivate feel of
the property.
Overall, by siting the house where we did, we 1) respected the trees,
2) created a front yard that was more private and 3) allowed the rear
yard to be more of an entertainment zone. Most importantly, the family
is happy with their dream home that they built on this unique lot in
their ideal town. DNJ
Entertaining
BEFORE
The Tenafly home wasn’t old by any means — not even 20
years. But its traditional style was beginning to look dated,
and the new owners decided it was time for a refresh. They
called on Ingrid Bergman, principal of IBK Design, also in
Tenafly, to touch up the kitchen, redo the primary bathroom and furnish
the entire house. “The owners entertain a lot and wanted their home to
DESIGNER INGRID BERGMAN CREATES AN ECLECTIC MODERN HOME
A carved fireplace mantel was replaced
with black marble in the living room, where
a black-and-white palette and colorful art
establish a Parisian feel.
be cozy but also luxurious and impressive,” Bergman says. The redesign
did just that, turning the traditional spaces into a modern showplace
well-suited to entertaining as well as quiet times at home.
The owners bought the home after living for years in a New York
City apartment and were excited to have more space and entertainment
options. They were involved in every step of the process of redesigning
BEFORE
A multi-light pendant
above the island creates
a connection to the high
ceiling while its spread
fills in the space.
the home, helping to select the materials, finishes and furnishings that
Bergman proposed and even accompanying her on shopping trips
to some stores and showrooms. “We connected very well and it was a
smooth process to get final approvals,” Bergman notes.
Today, the bones of the home remain traditional, Bergman says, but
the fixtures and furniture create an eclectic modern style. The changes are
evident the moment you enter. The old front door — with its curlicue
pattern in the glass and traditional sidelights — was removed to make
way for a modern glass and iron-frame door that fills the foyer with
sunlight. Bergman replaced a dated crystal chandelier with a new fixture
featuring elongated spheres suspended from the ceiling like dewdrops. To
further brighten the space, she painted the walls in “Decorator’s White”
by Benjamin Moore & Co. (“my go-to” shade, she says) and added a
console made of metal columns under an organically shaped mirror.
The floors, stair treads and handrail were refinished in a darker stain for
contrast, and the staircase balusters were replaced with an updated style.
40 June/July 2024

The cabinetry and appliances are
in the same location as before,
but everything is new except
the Wolf range. The removal of
heavy crown molding and adding
simplified cabinetry prove that
less can be more, Bergman says.
The bar (far right) connects the
kitchen to the den/family room.
The bar, updated with the
same style of cabinetry
as in the kitchen but
with a darker finish, was
redesigned with an island
parallel to the back wall,
replacing an L-shaped bar
that hampered the flow
from the kitchen to the
den/family room.
BEFORE
The living room, designed for formal entertaining, is open to the
foyer on one end and three sets of French doors on the other. Bergman
envisioned an elegant, Parisian-style room in a black-and-white palette
with colorful art and accessories adding a fun flavor. For textural appeal,
she added applied moldings on the walls and chose comfortable seating
in white velvet and a bouclé look and feel. A dated fireplace mantel was
replaced with black marble, a new chandelier adds interest at ceiling
level, and the Brazilian cherry floor was sanded and refinished in a dark
designnewjersey.com 41

The den/family room is a prime spot for entertaining and relaxing. A porcelain tile fireplace wall replaced a dated
carved mantel. Bergman eliminated the heavy draperies and installed shades that can be lowered to eliminate
glare when the owners are watching television. The traditional windows and modern furnishings create a
European feel in the room, the designer notes.
BEFORE
stain. The doors open to a new patio with Phantom shades that close to
extend the season well into winter, Bergman says. The swimming pool
was renovated and new pavers were added.
The kitchen was a problem spot from a design perspective. The drama
of the 20-foot-high ceiling was cut short, literally, by wide, dark crown
molding at the top of the cabinetry. The space above the molding looked
cavernous rather than dramatic. Bergman removed the molding, painted
the walls white and replaced the cabinetry with a flat-front style in a
light finish by luxury Italian brand Modiani Kitchens. The cabinetry
has integrated finger pulls so there is no visible hardware except for on
the matching panels on the refrigerator and freezer doors, which have
long, narrow handles that nearly disappear visually. “Sometimes people
think they have to do more to emphasize something [like the height of
the room], but often the opposite is true,” Bergman says. “Less really is
more.” Meanwhile, the new island, at 10 by 5 feet, was designed just a
little shorter than the old one so the Neolith porcelain top didn’t have to be
seamed. The perimeter countertops and backsplash are the same material.
The kitchen is part of a large space that also comprises a bar and den/
family room. The bar was formerly L-shaped with a peninsula that
hampered traffic flow. Bergman designed a new layout with a freestanding
island parallel to the bar cabinetry on the wall. She chose new cabinetry,
from Modiani like the kitchen but in a darker finish and with glass fronts
to display glassware and bottles of fine spirits. The bar stools are covered
in the same green fabric as the kitchen counter stools. In the den/family
room, which the owners enjoy as a primary entertaining space, Bergman
replaced the fireplace mantel with a wall of porcelain tile that resembles
travertine stone for a modern look. She also replaced heavy draperies with
roll-up shades that let in daylight but can be lowered to block sun glare on
the television. “It makes the design more interesting to have traditional
windows with newer furnishings for a European flair,” Bergman says.
42 June/July 2024

Bergman toned down the formality of the dining room by replacing a traditional crown molding with a more
transitional design, wrapped the walls above the wainscoting with a textured wallcovering, replaced the dated
chandelier with a modern fixture modeled after a necklace and commissioned a black cerused ash dining table
with brass inlay.
The owners host holiday and other special meals in the dining room.
Here Bergman took the formality down a notch with a new, more
transitional crown molding, created a warm ambience by adding wallpaper
above the wainscoting and replaced a traditional candle chandelier with a
necklace-inspired fixture featuring three ribbons of illumination. A black
cerused ash dining table with brass inlay amplifies the modern feel.
In the first-floor powder room, the designer envisioned a luxurious,
moody yet formal look, but the existing onyx mosaic floor was a challenge.
She wanted to keep the flooring because it was unique and had been very
well maintained. So to give the room an entirely different vibe, she added
dark wood-veneer wallcovering and chose brass for the faucets and for the
washstand and mirror frames to visually tie in with the flooring.
At the end of the day, the owners find refuge in their primary suite
sitting area, where Bergman created a cozy nook with a travertine-look
tile fireplace, a swirling piece of art, a comfy loveseat and chair, and
enveloping wallpaper.
The primary bathroom got a complete makeover as well, beginning
with removing a dated bathtub that was sunken in a platform that took
up one entire end of the room. A new freestanding tub allowed space
BEFORE
for longer vanities with a modern ambience. Floor and wall tiles with
red undertones and ornate mosaic designs were replaced with simpler
options: textured limestone on the walls and honed marble on the floor.
The lower level (see the web version of this story for photos) serves up
multiple options for the owners when they are alone, when their daughters
are home from college and when they entertain. Included are a lounge,
tennis and pool tables, bar, wine room, poker room, gym, theater, second
laundry room and guest suite. Existing alcoves were turned into seating
areas and an elevated stage for karaoke and other musical entertainment.
To tie everything together, Bergman painted the walls a moody gray for
a modern feel and replaced the floor with a lighter gray wood-look vinyl.
designnewjersey.com 43

BEFORE
The owners like to read and relax in the primary
suite sitting area, which the designer updated
with comfortable seating, a new travertinelook
fireplace surround and an earthy-toned
wallcovering.
With all the changes in the home, Bergman says, the owners now feel
like they’re on vacation and take advantage of being able to entertain
often — indoors and out. “They have a great appreciation for design
and details and understand the impact they have in transforming their
home,” she says. DNJ
INGENIOUS SPACE SOLUTIONS BOOST STYLE AND FUNCTION
IN A MORRIS COUNTY REMODEL
In the stairwell, existing Prairie-style window trim was painted black for
emphasis. Together with new railings and posts, the transformation
creates a “striking focal point” in the heart of the home, designer
Marissa Sauer says. The Moroccan-style ceiling lamp is similar to one
the homeowners purchased on their honeymoon in Morocco.
GENERAL CONTRACTOR, CABINETRY & MILLWORK A.E. EZMAT WOODWORKING + DESIGN
Tasked with a first-floor renovation of a Mendham home,
designers Marissa Sauer and Lauren Collette sought to
heighten the function and infuse a modern industrial
flair to the kitchen, living area and adjacent spaces. Sauer
is owner and lead designer with Design MACS in Franklin Lakes and
Collette is a co-designer.
“The major challenge was a hallway running along the rear of the house
that ended in the kitchen,” Sauer says. Annexing that hallway space led
to key innovations, such as a custom blue apothecary-style cabinet in
the kitchen that occupies space where the hallway entrance used to be.
BEFORE
Reclaiming space from a former hallway off the kitchen made way for a blue
apothecary-style cabinet and a storage-packed walk-in pantry concealed behind
paneled doors. Custom built-ins framing the peninsula and banquette — with storage
accessible from both sides — seamlessly integrate the kitchen with the living room. A
space-efficient banquette is upholstered in high-performance fabric.
designnewjersey.com 47

BEFORE
Reconfiguring the layout and revamping the built-ins, among other upgrades, helped
“transform the living room into a stylish and inviting space for the whole family to
enjoy,” Sauer says. Blue and yellow accents, complementary colors found in the client’s
beloved painting of “Blue Dog” by George Rodrigue (not shown), foster a sense of
cohesion among rooms. Sofas sport elegant brass detailing, while a custom area rug
grounds the room with its leather border and tailored dimensions. Another star in the
room — the Massoud bench in front of the fireplace — is upholstered in three diverse
performance-grade fabrics and textures.
It also opened up space for a walk-in pantry that’s camouflaged behind
paneled doors.
While updating the kitchen, which graced the cover of Design NJ’s
February/March 2024 Kitchen Issue, the designers seized the opportunity
to capture remaining hallway square footage to enlarge adjacent spaces,
altering their orientation and access and even giving one room an
entirely new purpose.
In the light-filled central staircase, the designers turned up the drama by
painting the existing Prairie-style window trim black for a more modern
feel. Posts and dated spindles were replaced, with rails painted crisp
white. Adds Sauer: “The once mundane columns are now both visually
appealing and practical, transcending from eyesores to elegant features.”
Highlighting the stairwell is a Moroccan ceiling lamp that replaced a
similar one the homeowners purchased on their honeymoon in Morocco.
“I like the things in my home to tell stories,” the wife says. The original
lamp — purchased before they had a designated spot for it — “was
never really the right size,” she recalls. Still, they “didn’t want to lose the
sentiment” so they found a vendor in Morocco to handcraft a new one
in proper scale.
“They did an amazing job on the detail work,” the homeowner says.
It was a huge upgrade!” For Sauer, meaningful, historical connections
like these “turn homes into a reflection of our adventures rather than
just a collection of purchases.” Elsewhere, the designers incorporated
Buster + Punch switches in almost every room within view. “These switches
BEFORE
Converting a kids’ playroom into a sophisticated adult
cocktail lounge and reading room “has given us an
opportunity to have more grown-up space now that
our boys are older,” the homeowner says.
“A concealed entrance to the cocktail bar adds intrigue,”
Sauer says. “When you open the hidden door, the room
reveals itself as a hidden gem, brimming with vibrancy
and inviting you in to create the perfect cocktail.”
Bar cabinets are painted “Blue Peacock” in a highgloss,
hand-polished mirror finish — a color cue taken
from the vivid Pheasants wallpaper. Custom Porter
ring cabinet pulls in polished brass have a labradorite
inset, which brings an element of natural stone into
the detail, Sauer notes. Bistro-inspired brass-and-glass
shelving and a polished, unlacquered brass sink are
highlighted by a black-painted ceiling and a polished
Absolute Black granite countertop.
BEFORE
The enlarged powder room showcases
statement pieces such as a handmade vanity
and unique tilework that mimics industrial rivets
on the main wall. “We carefully laid these out
to ensure the fixtures could be centered on the
alternating pattern of lines for balance,” Sauer
explains. Other walls (not shown) are covered
in luxe grasscloth. Marble flooring with intricate
brass inlays from Artistic Tile (also not shown)
“adds a touch of brightness and elegance to the
otherwise sleek and moody room.”
transcend the ordinary, elevating standard switch plates into genuine
design elements rather than mere functional necessities,” she says.
Accommodating sufficient seating, storage and other features the
clients desired in the kitchen and adjacent living area posed unique
challenges. “Integrating an everyday kitchen table with sufficient space
to function seemed unfeasible — until we incorporated it into the back
of the kitchen peninsula,” Sauer says. A built-in banquette was another
space-efficient solution because it allowed the custom table to sit closer
to the wall. Built-ins surrounding the banquette and peninsula contain
storage that’s accessible from both sides so family members can easily
access dishware and other essentials while seated at the table.
To enhance style and function, built-ins in the living room were
completely revamped and include such features as an integrated beverage
fridge for easy entertaining and open shelving for cherished keepsakes.
Window and door trim was painted black for a more modern look,
echoing the details of the Prairie-style windows in the central staircase.
In the living room’s reconfigured layout, which blends seamlessly with
the kitchen in a more open setting, the designers relocated the television
above the fireplace “to consolidate the focal points,” Sauer notes. In the
process, they brought in a reclaimed mantel for warmth and character.
Blue and yellow accents, inspired by the client’s beloved painting of “Blue
Dog” by George Rodrigue, inject vibrancy against a classic base of white,
black and wood.
Shades of blue reappear in the cocktail lounge/library just down
the hall. “Our goal was to transform a children’s playroom into a
sophisticated adult space offering a retreat for relaxation, entertainment,
specialty cocktails and reading,” Sauer says. One wall features a rich
blue upholstered built-in banquette with a button-tufted back; another
contains an expanse of built-ins that house the homeowners’ vast
collection of books and artifacts. The room’s hidden gem? A concealed
bookcase entry to a sophisticated cocktail bar “brimming with vibrancy
and inviting you in to create the perfect cocktail,” Sauer says.
50 June/July 2024

The nearby powder room was also reinvented —
the layout pivoted 90 degrees after it absorbed square
footage from a former hallway. “The expanded bath
accommodates a stunning vanity and a generous
distance around the toilet. It also serves as a canvas
for showcasing unique tilework, bold wallpaper and
elegant lighting,” Sauer says. “I think this may be
our favorite bathroom we’ve designed thanks to its
seamless mixture of materials and textures.”
The remodel in general “has given us an
opportunity to have more grown-up space now
Watchung
our boys are
Fork,
Westfield
their mom says, citing the
cocktail lounge/library that became a new place to
unwind after work. Beyond the additional storage,
“we also love how fresh and updated everything
looks. There are so many textures and little surprises
everywhere, like the secret pantry door and the
hidden bar behind the bookcase. The more you
look, the more details you see, yet the space looks
clean and uncluttered.” DNJ
A DESIGNER LOVINGLY UPDATES HER EARLY-20 TH -CENTURY HOME
52 June/July 2024

WRITTEN BY MARIROSE KRALL
PHOTOS BY MIKE VAN TASSELL
DESIGN BY ANASTASIA HARRISON, AIA, LEED-AP
Anastasia Harrison knew that this
circa-1905 residence in Westfield
was special from the first time she saw it. “This home
had a soul and a presence unlike any other I’ve seen.
The minute I walked in, I could feel the joy and
positivity,” she says. Harrison, principal architect
and owner of Westfield-based AHD & Co., loved the
design details that give the home its character, such as
the ceiling millwork in the living room and the builtin
cabinetry in the dining room. Still, she understood
that a house of this era would require some TLC.
The kitchen, the result of a mid-1980s renovation,
was in particular need of attention. The dated space
had an awkward layout with a triangular island.
Harrison removed the wall it shared with the dining
room to create one large cooking/dining space. “We
took a very formal house that had a back staircase and
made it a little more casual — a little more suitable for
today’s lifestyle.” That secondary stairwell — which
was situated just off the kitchen, opposite the window
wall — was eliminated to make way for a scullery.
During construction, the project team discovered
that the secondary-staircase wall was load bearing (a
surprise to all concerned, including Harrison, who
assumed the kitchen/dining room wall was doing the
heavy lifting). With that removal, the space needed
The wall between the kitchen and the dining room was
removed to create one long eat-in space suitable for casual
contemporary living. The kitchen is Harrison’s favorite part of the
house. “I have a 12-foot island that I absolutely adore,” she says.
The white marble countertops are protected by a sealant called
TuffSkin®. “It’s kind of like an iPhone screen protector. You don’t
even know it’s there. The countertop is absolutely gorgeous.”
BEFORE
Designer Anastasia Harrison’s home, a center-hall-switchback
Colonial style, features stairs that rise to a landing and then turn
180 degrees to continue upward. The entry hall leads to the living
room at left and the family room straight ahead. The secretary
beneath the staircase is an antique that Harrison bought in upstate
New York. The triangular cabinet is an antique purchased in London.
shoring up. “We added structural beams that had to be installed from
the outside,” Harrison says. “We cut holes in the outside wall to slide
them into place.” Harrison covered the joists with millwork to create
beams on the ceiling. They serve an aesthetic as well as a practical
purpose, adding architectural interest that mimics similar treatments in
the living and dining rooms.
The family room also features a beamed ceiling, but in a much
different style. “It was an ’80s addition and it felt different than the
rest of the house, with different proportions,” Harrison explains. The
designer toned down the effect of the high, vaulted ceiling by adding
stained wood panels intersected with beams. “That created a better sense
of scale,” she says. The addition of a cast-stone fireplace makes the room
feel even more snug, regardless of its substantial dimensions. “Since the
space was more contemporary, we gave the room its own identity that
had more texture and is a bit more modern.”
Harrison brought bits of modernity to the home’s original rooms
as well. In the living room, she used black paint to create a dramatic
moment, using a gloss on the fireplace and mantel and a matte on the
wall behind it. “You might expect all white,” she says. “The black really
showcases the fireplace. We took a very traditional room and added bold
style and a bit of moodiness.”
In contrast, the primary bathroom is bright and airy, and it also features
contemporary touches. The flooring, for example, is an updated design
incorporated with a nod to tradition. “It’s a very classic checkerboard
that you would see in a home of this age,” Harrison explains, “but we
modernized it by playing with the proportions. The pattern is unexpected.”
56 June/July 2024

The family room is a 1980s addition. “It felt like 1985,” Harrison says. “So we put wood on the ceiling and stained it a custom color to bring it down visually and create a better sense of scale.”
As Harrison had anticipated, the home needed some work. But she
could see it had been lovingly cared for by previous owners. “They
preserved it well,” she says. Harrison enjoyed the process of honoring
the home’s history while updating it for her 21st-century family. “I
am a never-ending home renovator. This is an old house — that’s part
of its joy.” DNJ
Harrison showcased the fireplace in the living room by painting it and the wall behind it black.

BEFORE
The diminutive powder room packs a powerful punch. “I was trying to create a
moment,” Harrison says. “It needed its own personality. I’ve always loved that Rifle & Co.
wallpaper — I even have sneakers in that pattern.”
“I was inspired by the French doors
because they are magnificent,” Harrison
says of the design in the light and airy
primary bathroom. “I wanted them to
be a focal point. It made sense to put
sinks next to the doors. You want light
at the sinks. We wanted the shower and
bathtub farther back into the room.”
DESIGNERS HELP A STONE FABRICATOR HIT IT OUT OF THE PARK
WITH HIS ANNIVERSARY GIFT TO HIS WIFE
The traditional gift for a 20th wedding
anniversary is china, but Peter Brooks
took a different path. The owner of Peter
Brooks Stone Works Inc. in Wood-Ridge gifted his
wife, Jessica, a new dining room featuring a standout
marble table that he fabricated himself.
The Brooks family moved into their Westfield
home in 2017 when it was brand new, and the mostused
rooms took priority when it came to design.
However, they had always wanted to upgrade the
dining room because it’s the first room seen upon
entering the foyer. “We were both excited to do the
dining room because it finally finished the house,”
Peter Brooks says.
That’s when he got the idea to ask Hillary Kaplan
and Miriam Silver Verga, friends of the couple and
owners of the Mimi & Hill design firm in Westfield,
to create a dining room where he, his wife and their
children could enjoy special meals and host friends
and extended family in glamorous style.
Brooks’ main request was that Mimi & Hill
design a dining table using Grand Antique marble,
a polished material with a primarily black base and
organic white veins throughout. The couple both
love this type of marble, which comes from France
and which they acquired through Dente Trading in
Cedar Grove. “It makes a bold statement,” Brooks
says, “and my wife likes things to stand out. She had
her heart set on this.”
Brooks knew Mimi & Hill was up to the task of
designing the table — as well as the entire room —
Mimi & Hill provided plenty of storage by placing two
sideboards side by side lengthwise. An ombré wallcovering
behind the sideboards and an architectural-patterned
wallcovering on the ceiling ramp up the visual interest without
distracting from the table.
62 June/July 2024

A custom Grand Antique marble table that seats
12 is the centerpiece of Peter and Jessica Brooks’
redesigned dining room.
The tabletop rests on four pedestals (two square and
two rectangular) fabricated of the same marble.
because they have collaborated on many projects through the years. The
designers drew plans for a table that measures 10 by 5 feet. The top is
hollow, Brooks notes, though it’s backfilled with some wood for support,
and the base comprises two square and two rectangular pedestals that are
hollow pieces assembled together. The table weighs an estimated 1,000-
1,200 pounds, Brooks adds.
To make the gift even more personal, Brooks fabricated the table
himself, everything from programming Mimi & Hill’s design to cutting
the marble using a piece of equipment he had recently acquired. Marble
can stain, of course, but the table is treated with a strong sealer. And as
Brooks notes, “We’re at a point where we want to enjoy our lives so we’re
not so worried about it.”
The table was the starting point for the redesign of the entire room,
says Meggie Rackenberg of Mimi & Hill. “[The original dining room]
was not speaking to the glamour Jess and Peter had in the rest of their
home,” Rackenberg says. To extend that glamour into the
dining room, the designers, in addition to designing the
table, framed the entrance from the foyer with a metalframed
glass door and chose two special wallcoverings:
metallic ombré on an accent wall and a pattern called
“Grey Pendulum” on the ceiling. The room already
had one starburst chandelier, and the designers added a
matching one and centered them over the new table.
The designers also were mindful of keeping the
room comfortable and livable, Rackenberg says. They
recommended comfortable upholstered dining chairs
covered in performance fabric to protect against spills,
and they placed two sideboards with an aged brass finish
side by side lengthwise to create plenty of storage as well
as the illusion of a long piece of furniture without having
to source a custom piece.
An off-center window high on the wall was a challenge.
“I didn’t understand the point of it,” Rackenberg says.
The designers drew attention away from the window by
placing a large piece of art on the console beside it and a
grouping of interesting vases below it.
Now the room is an elegant place for dining and also
an attractive spot for Zoom meetings, Rackenberg says.
In fact, soon after the room was completed, the owners
hosted a “fantastic dinner celebrating the room with Miriam and Hillary
and their husbands,” Rackenberg adds.
“It has certainly elevated our special occasions,” Brooks says. “Mimi &
Hill hit it out of the park.” DNJ
