After an indifferent April weather wise, we’re all hoping 

for some spring sunshine to lift everyone’s mood in May.

to the Olympics, which takes place in Paris this year. 

Local girl Calli Thackery has been selected to represent 

Great Britain, and all of us at The Doorsteppa wish her

The 80th anniversary of D-Day is honoured next month 

and in our History section we take a look at the 

international co-operation which brought about the 

largest amphibious invasion in military history. See

Local Chronicle 

For those of us who are looking forward to the Olympics 2024 

which take place in Paris from Friday the 26 th July to Sunday 

the 11 th of August, we will all be watching out for and supporting 

local girl Calli Thackery from Killamarsh who has been selected 

to represent Great Britain in the Marathon… 

…and according to a report in the Sheffield Star 

30 year old Calli was born to run. 

The report of her birth reads … 

“Running ace Carl Thackery has someone to 

follow in his speedy footsteps – a bouncing baby 

girl.” 

And their daughter is already proving herself to 

be quick off the mark by arriving two weeks 

early! 

The 30 year old Sheffield long-distance star 

cancelled a race in Morocco even though his 

wife Rachel was not due to give birth for a 

fortnight. 

Carl, of Ivyside Gardens, Killamarsh said: “I was 

actually going to race this weekend but I pulled 

out – just as well really because she was a lile 

bit early.” 

Rachel, 28 gave birth to 6lbs 4oz baby girl Calli 

Rianne in the Northern General Hospital at 4.40 

pm on Saturday. Her names are unique and 

were made up by the couple.

Calli on her Wedding Day

Hauger-Thackery 

Harriers in Sheffield. Carl runs long distance 

while his wife is a sprinter. 

Carl said: “I’m a long distance runner and my 

wife is a sprinter, so who knows, maybe our 

daughter will be a middle distance runner – she 

has long legs so you never know.” 

So 30 years later the journalist who wrote the 

arcle made a very accurate prophesy. 

Calli’s me of 2:22:11 in Riga in 2023 put her in 

the record books, second only to Paula 

Radcliffe. 

In 2023 Calli married Nick Hauger, her Coach, 

and became Calli Hauger -Thackery. 

Congratulaons to you both. 

And on Sunday the 21 st of April, 2024 was 

chosen as a pacer in the London Marathon. 

We wish Calli good luck and send our best 

wishes for the Olympics in July 2024.

Killamarsh Parish Suite 

Community Awards 

The Parish Suite refurbishment was completed in December 

2023 just in time for our Christmas and New Year 

celebrations. The Suite now has a fresh and modern feel 

and the response we have received from those residents 

who have visited it so far is very positive. The cost of the 

refurbishment was £158,524 which was significantly lower 

than we had first anticipated. The Council managed to 

secure funding of £99,410 from the FCC Community 

Foundation Community Projects Fund towards the project 

and the outstanding balance was funded from the Councils 

earmarked reserves that had been allocated to the 

refurbishment. The Council would like to thank JBW Construction 

who completed the refurbishment and FCC 

Community Foundation 

for granting us the funding 

so we could deliver 

this project. 

D-Day Recipe 

D-Day Corned Beef Hash 

Ingredients: 1 tin of corned beef, 1 medium onion, 2 

medium sized carrots, 50g garden peas, 250g of 

potatoes, 1tsp tomato purée and 300ml Beef stock (or 

cubes in water) 

1. Finely chop the onion & cut the corned beef 

& potatoes into bite-size pieces. Keeping the corned 

beef refrigerated makes it easier to cut up & won't fall 

away into the hash too quickly. 

2. Fry the onion until soft & slightly translucent in a large 

pan, before gradually adding the potatoes & carrots 

along with the beef stock. Squeeze in the tomato 

purée. Keep the vegetables on a rolling boil for 15 

minutes until the root vegetables are soft, turn down the 

heat, then add the corned beef & peas to a slow low 

boil, making sure all ingredients are thoroughly 

cooked. If needed, thicken the hash with a cornflour 

slurry or gravy granules if available. 

3. Divide the hash between two plates. 

Notes 

1. Can also add a chopped parsnip, or turnip in step 2, 

with some boiled or steamed cabbage as a side dish to 

go further. 

2. Double or triple for more servings & freeze any 

leftovers. 

3. OR put hash into a baking dish, add a pie crust on top 

& bake in a 200ºC/400ºF or Gas Mark 6 oven for an 

additional 25 minutes

Organised by Killamarsh Parish Council, these awards aim 

to celebrate and honour the outstanding efforts of those 

who go above and beyond to enrich the lives of others in 

our community. There are three categories for which to 

nominate: 

Group Award: This award recognises the exceptional contributions 

of voluntary organisations and not-for-profit 

groups that have made a significant difference in the lives 

of Killamarsh residents. From local charities to community 

associations, we want to hear about the groups that are 

making a real impact. 

Individual (18 and Over) Award: Do you know someone 

who consistently goes out of their way to make a positive 

difference in Killamarsh? Whether it's through volunteering, 

organising community events, or simply being a pillar of 

support for others, nominate them for this individual award 

and let their efforts be celebrated. 

Individual (17 and Under) Award: Young people are the 

future of our community, and many of them are already 

making a big difference in Killamarsh. Whether it's through 

volunteering, fundraising, or showing exceptional kindness 

and leadership, we want to hear about the inspiring young 

individuals who are making a difference in our village. 

Nominations for the Pride of Killamarsh Community 

Awards open on June 5th and close on August 5th. 

We encourage all Killamarsh residents to take this opportunity 

to recognise and celebrate the remarkable contributions 

of their fellow community members. Nomination forms 

will be available from the Parish Office and the Parish 

Council website.

Travel Derbyshire on Demand 

Travel Derbyshire is a new type of 

bus service. It must be booked in 

advance but is more flexible than a 

conventional bus. It is a fully accessible 

service, with the ability to 

carry passengers in wheelchairs 

and has space for pushchairs. 

Travel Derbyshire on Demand is for everyone. You can 

travel anywhere within the operating area, which covers 

the Districts of Bolsover and North East Derbyshire and 

the Borough of Chesterfield. 

Grass Cutting 2024 Update 

The Parish Council have changed their grounds 

maintenance contract for 2024-25 to a local company, 

who will be undertaking the grass cutting and hedge/ 

shrub maintenance at all Parish Council owned parks 

and open spaces, including Killamarsh (new) Cemetery. 

Even though there has been a very challenging 

start to the grass growing season with all the rain we 

have been experiencing, the Council hopes that residents 

are happy with what has been achieved so 

far. Please let the Parish Office know if you have any 

feedback.

The people of Madeira make no secret of their pride in the divine nectar that these ferile lands 

have been producing for centries. The world-renowned and award-winning Madeira wine is 

histor in liquid for. But it is also flavour and pleasure. 

This crown jewel from Madeira, with its intense and 

unmistakable flavour, has been part of the island's 

history. Historical records show that only 25 years 

after colonisation began, Madeira wine was already 

being exported. It is therefore no wonder that it 

quickly became a success in the most diverse 

geographic locations.

plays? Over its six hundred years of 

internationalisation, many big-name personalities 

have been won over by Madeira Wine. This is the 

case of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and 

Winston Churchill. 

The success that this product has achieved in the 

most diverse export routes lies, mainly, in the 

exceptional quality of the raw material and the 

meticulous refinement of the production process, 

from the vineyards to the Madeira Wine cellars. The 

grapes used come from hand-planted vines on small 

plots of land known as "poios", supported by stone 

walls on steep mountain sides. A tough ancestral art, 

but done with dedication and finesse. 

The distinctive quality of this fruit derives from 

Madeira's well-known mild climate, as well as the 

fertility of the nutrient-rich volcanic soils. But the type 

of grape cultivated also plays a decisive role in this 

equation. There are more than 30 Madeira wine 

varieties. However, the most commonly used today 

are the noble four - Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and 

Malvasia - as well as Terrantez and Tinta Negra. 

When it comes to dry wines, the Sercial variety 

stands out, with its light colour and smooth flavour, 

ideal as an aperitif. Verdelho, in turn, heads the 

medium-dry wines category, standing out for its 

golden colour and delicate flavour, ideal for meals. 

The Bual variety, smooth and velvety, is ideal for 

accompanying roasts and desserts, having a semisweet 

aftertaste and a dark golden colour. Finally, for 

between meals or dessert, Malvasia is the best 

choice, producing a sweet, full-bodied, intensely 

perfumed, and red-coloured wine.

6 th June 1944 - 6 th June 2024 

the 80 th Anniversar of D-Day 

The D-Day operaon of the 6 th of June, 1944 

brought together the land, air and sea forces of the 

Allied armies in what became known as the largest 

amphibious invasion in military history. Early on 

the 6 th of June, Allied airborne forces parachuted 

into drop zones across Northern France. Ground 

troops then landed across five assault beaches – 

Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. 

D-Day required unprecedented co-operaon 

between internaonal armed forces with the 

Supreme Headquarters Allied Expedionary Force 

(SHAEF) united against Germany. 

By 1944, over 2 million troops from over 12 

countries consisng primarily of Brish, American 

and Canadian troops but also included Australian, 

Belgian, Czech, Dutch, French, Greek, New 

Zealand, Norwegian, Rhodesian and Polish naval, 

air and ground support, were in Britain in 

preparaon for the invasion. 

Almost 130,000 soldiers, both Allied and German, 

lost their lives in Normandy in 1944 in the fight to 

restore freedom. The bodies of many soldiers 

were claimed by their families and returned to 

their nave countries. Others were buried in 

Normandy, the land where they fell, in one of the 

twenty-seven military cemeteries, each designated 

by a specific naonality. 

Some now belong to Allied naons, others are 

maintained by volunteers. 

These places invite contemplaon and 

remembrance of the men who fell in order to 

liberate people they didn’t even know. 

We will remember them. 

The stascs on D-Day, codenamed Operaon 

Overlord, are staggering. The Allies used over 

5,000 ships and landing cra to land more than 

150,000 troops on five beaches in Normandy. A 

total of 4,414 Allied troops were killed on D-Day 

itself. More than 5,000 were wounded. In the 

ensuring Bale of Normandy, 73,000 Allied forces 

were killed and 153,000 wounded. 

By the end of the day, the Allies had established a 

foothold along the coast and could begin their 

advance into France. The landings marked the 

start of a long and costly campaign in north-west 

Europe, which ulmately convinced the German 

high command that defeat was inevitable. 

‘Overlord’ did not bring an end to the war in 

Europe, but it did begin the process through which 

victory was eventually achieved. 

The 6 th of June 2024 marks the 80 th anniversary of 

the D-Day landings along the Normandy coast. 

This event ulmately led to the liberaon of 

Europe. 

To mark the 80 th Anniversary of D-Day Killamarsh 

Heritage Society will be pung on a display about 

World War 2 and D-Day. 

We will be in Killamarsh Co-op on Thursday the 

6 th of June from 9.30 unl 1.00 pm. 

And we will be in Killamarsh Community Hub 

(formerly known as the Clock Centre) on 

Saturday the 8 th June and on Sunday the 9 th of 

June from 11.00 am to 4.00 pm.
