VAT 

Please note that due to the withdrawal of the Retail Export Scheme by HMRC, we are unable to provide VAT refunds 

documentation for hand-carried exports. In order to qualify for a VAT refund, your lots must be exported by a shipper 

and valid exportation documentation must be provided. 

PAYMENT TERMS 

Payment is required by Wednesday 19th of June by debit card, BACS, Worldpay and cash (subject to money laundering 

regulations). Please note we do not accept credit cards or American Express. 

PACKING, DELIVERY & SHIPPING 

Shipping can prove expensive so please ask us for a shipping quote before bidding. We aim to provide in-house packing 

where practical but high value and delicate items may well require a specialist. Overseas shipping is best provided by a 

shipper in order to access appropriate insurance cover. We can recommend local carriers, UK domestic carriers and 

International shipping specialists. Please note that the export of ivory is highly regulated. If you are bidding from 

abroad please ensure that you are aware of any restrictions related to export.

John Harrison was High Master of St. Paul’s School 

and served the young Prince Henry before entering 

the ministry. A noted antiquary, the jewelled ring 

in the present miniature alluding to this interest, 

his collection was acquired after his death by Sir 

Simonds D’Ewes. The present lot is based on a 

large scale composition in the City Art Gallery, York.

She is most noted for her comments upon meeting 

in 1824 with the fossil finder Mary Anning - “The 

extraordinary thing in this young woman is that she 

had made herself so thoroughly acquainted with the 

science that the moment she finds any bones she 

knows to what tribe they belong… By reading and 

application she has arrived at that greater degree of 

knowledge to be in the habit of writing and talking 

with professors and other clever men on the subject, 

and they all acknowledge that she understands 

more of the science than anyone else in this 

kingdom.” - Lady Harriet Silvester’s diary, 1824.

Looking to sinister, wearing a lace collar

The date of the work would suggest Maria Eleanor 

Villiers, Countess of Clarendon (23 January 1761 – 

18 March 1844), formerly Maria Eleanor Forbes, the 

wife of John Villiers, 3rd Earl of Clarendon. 

Maria was the daughter and co-heir of Admiral 

Hon. John Forbes and his wife, the former Lady 

Mary Capell, daughter of William Capell, 3rd Earl 

of Essex. Her mother and the earl’s mother being 

sisters, she and the earl were first cousins. They 

married on 5 January 1791, and had one daughter, 

Mary-Harriet, who never married and died in 1838. 

The earl died in 1838 and was succeeded by his 

nephew. The countess died, aged 83, at Clarendon 

House, North Audley Street, Westminster. 

A miniature portrait of the countess was painted on 

ivory by Richard Cosway.

The Gwalior Star is a Campaign medal presented by 

the Honourable East India Company to the soldiers 

of the British Army and the British led Bengal Army 

who took part in the 1843 Gwalior campaign. 

Rising tensions between the East India Company 

and the State of Gwalior led to a British led 

advance into Gwalior early in December 1843 in a 

two pronged attack. On December 29, 1843, the 

British Army defeated Maharaja Shrimant Jayaji 

Rao Scindia, and regained control of Gwalior. The 

first division of the army, commanded by General 

Sir Hugh Gough, was victorious at the Battle of 

Maharajpoor. Major-General Grey, on the same day, 

with the second division, was victorious at the Battle 

of Punniar.

in the 15th Hussars, JP, DL, born 19 November 

1794, married on 24 December 1829 to Emma 

Matilda, daughter of Rev. E. Sacherverel Wilmot of 

Chaddesley, Derbyshire. Henry purchased the Astle 

and Chelford estates of his uncle, Colonel Thomas 

Parker, in 1833, and seated himself there. He died 

without issue 3 August, 1838 and was succeeded by 

his brother, John.
