New York Double Decker Tours. With reference to nos. 3 & 4, I am unsure whether Atlantic Express, -?-, is an
operator from the New York area, but I seem to recall seeing coaches with the fleetname “Atlantic Express”, in
New York when we were there two years ago. Any offers? I think fleet numbers are allocated as vehicles enter
service as nos. 5/7 were acquired at the same time, and almost simultaneously with the acquisition of no. 6,
which came direct from the UK. Following withdrawal, the RT no. 9 was offered to a local museum but they were
not interested so it was broken up. The Dennis Loline 486 KOT may have been acquired much earlier than 6/95.
It only operated for a very short while before failing, but after withdrawal some of its seats were used in the
refurbishment of no. 19, later 9, (FWC 428B); this latter vehicle is another which may have arrived much earlier
than the date shown (10/96). Before arriving here, 20 (WJM 821T) had been on loan to a church or religious
organisation in Oklahoma for evaluation, but in the event they opted for a refurbished FLF with an International
engine at one time in the fleet of Boston Doubledeckers, Boston, MA. Around 8/98 it is possible that Jim Nikitas
of Chicago was investing in NYDD, and this may explain the appearance of BNU 681G which, later on, was to
be found in Miami in the company of two other VR’s owned by Busapolis Leasing, a Nikitas company. Neoplan
double deck coaches had been observed at the depot on a couple of occasions, but never in service, so not
known whether acquired or not.
Further conversions to open-top to report here are: 11 (GVF 445D) by11/96; 16 (542 OHU) between 11/96
& 8/97; 17 (819 SHW) between 10/98 & 9/99; 20 (WJM 821T) was converted to full open top (retaining
front and first 2 side windows), and not partial open top, between 3/98 and 5/98 (please note correction to earlier
report).
