All the species originally described from Nicaragua are labeled Bluefields<br />

and were probably collected both on the coast and in interior upriver from<br />

Bluefields.<br />

’ 1. Chagasia bathana (Dyar in Curry, 1928). TYPE: Holotype 9, near Gatun<br />

(Canal Zone), 27 Dee 1927, CT-H. Bath (USNM, 40859). BIONOMICS: Larvae<br />

and pupae among grass stems in narrow channels <strong>of</strong> swiftly flowing streams<br />

below rapids or falls, occasionally in quieter backwaters <strong>of</strong> the rapids or falls<br />

or in the sluggish streams below. [The larvae can be collected throughout the<br />

year but are most abundant during the rainy season (Arnett 1947: 187)]. Holo-<br />

type bred from larva.<br />

2. Anopheles (Stethomyia) kompi Edwards, 1930. TYPE: Holotype d, Al-<br />

mirante (Bocas de1 Toro), Feb 1928, W. H. W. Komp (USNM). BIONOMICS:<br />

[Larvae in very slow moving, drying streams or in pools left by drying streams<br />

in shady jungles. Apparently they are associated with an alga (Arnett 1947:<br />

188)].<br />

3. Anopheles (A.) niveopalpis Ludlow, 1919 [= eiseni]. TYPE: Holotype 9,<br />

Camacho Reservoir, Empire (Canal Zone), 28 July 1928 (USNM). BIONOMICS:<br />

[Larvae in shaded pools beside streams and in woods, in open treeholes and<br />

broken bamboo, and in coconut husks].<br />

4. Anopheles (A.) neomaculipalpus Curry, 1931. TYPE: d, 9, larva and<br />

pupa, near Gatun (Canal Zone) and in the flat coastal savannas east <strong>of</strong> Panama<br />

City (Panama), no other data (LU). BIONOMICS: Larvae in cattle tracks ex-<br />

posed to the sun in low lying marshy pastures.<br />

5. Anopheles (A.) chiriquiensis Komp, 1936 [= parapunctipennis]. TYPE:<br />

Lectotype d with genitalia slide, Volcan de Chiriqui (Chiriqui), elev. 6500 ft,<br />

7 Feb 1935, W. H. W. Komp (USNM, 51882; selection <strong>of</strong> Stone and Knight<br />

1956b: 277). BIONOMICS: Larvae and pupae in cold spring among rocks<br />

(about 57 F). Adults in hollow trees and under stream banks.<br />

6. Anopheles (A.) punctimacula Dyar & Knab, 1906. TYPE: Holotype<br />

adult, Colon (Colon), 2 Feb 1904, W. M. Black (USNM, 9979). BIONOMICS:<br />

[Larvae in swift or drying streams, ponds, ditches, rivers and seepage areas;<br />

abundant throughout the year. Adults in native houses during the day, abun-<br />

dant at screens at night, will bite man even during the day (Arnett 1947: 193)].<br />

7. Anopheles (A.) malefactor Dyar & Knab, 1907 [= punctimacula]. TYPE:<br />

Lectotype ? (136.1) with associated larval skin (portion <strong>of</strong> abdomen) and pupal<br />

skin, upper Rio Chagres (Panama), 7 June 1907, A. Busck (USNM, 10877; se-<br />

lection <strong>of</strong> Stone and Knight 1956b: 278). BIONOMICS: Larvae in still pool <strong>of</strong><br />

drying mountain spring.<br />

8. Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) gorgasi Dyar & Knab, 1907 [= albimanus].<br />

TYPE: Holotype 9, La Boca (Canal Zone), date not specified, A. H. Jennings<br />

(USNM, 10863). BIONOMICS: [Larvae in vegetation in open sunlit ground<br />

waters] .<br />

9. Anopheles (N. ) anomalophyllus Komp, 1936. TYPE: Holotype d with<br />

genitalia slide, Wenham’s farm, near Almirante (Bocas de1 Toro), Feb 1927,
