The response from alumni was awe-inspiring. When alumni were sent a letter explaining low projected enrollment numbers for the incoming freshmen class, they donated money to help these future nurses. Assistant Dean for Alumni Relations and Development Nora Hennessy said, “Alumni donated whatever they could. A uniform is $45, so there were people who sent in $45 or $90, knowing that students need two. I think they pushed themselves to say ‘You know, I can help a student with the money for two uniforms.’” Because of the generosity of FPB alumni, the Alumni Association was able to offer every student enrolled in Fall 2009 a gift of $1,000 to be used for nursing uniforms, books, lab kits, etc. Potential new nursing students were sent letters explaining 28 The Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing Case Western Reserve University the “stimulus package,” and projected enrollment totals then increased enough to meet tuition revenue goals, thanks largely to the generosity of alumni. “We also had a lot of response from parents, who were very emotional, not about the amount of dollars but the implication of caring from alumni,” said Ms. Hennessy. When Alumni Association Board President Winnie Walter spoke to incoming students on Freshman Friday in Spring, there was an overwhelming response to the outreach by alumni. Because of the BSN Stimulus Package offering, many freshmen and their families felt that FPB was a nurturing and supportive place to receive an outstanding education. This effort spearheaded by FPB alumni thus significantly increased enrollment for the Class of 2013 to a strong 72 students.
During the new student orientation on August 18, 2009, the 2009-2010 Alumni Association Board President Matthew Schnupp told incoming students about the supportive alumni of the school. When he asked the students to raise their hands to indicate whether the BSN Stimulus Package had affected their decisions to come to FPB, virtually all hands went up. This response from the students is a testimony to the compassionate, loyal, and generous alumni of FPB who have set an example to these future alumni in supporting FPB students. The Class of 2013 has expressed their gratitude personally with handwritten letters — some of which are pictured here — to the alumni who made it possible for them to attend FPB. All of us at FPB appreciate and are proud of the incredible, hands-on alumni who bolster the school. Thank you again for your support and generosity!
