IN MEMORIAM WE MOURN THE LOSS OF THESE FPB ALUMNI AND FRIENDS AND ExTEND HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES TO THEIR LOVED ONES. Naomi Tegeler Patterson, DN ’37, of Littleton, Colorado, passed away on December 5, 2008, at the age of 95. Gerd O. Miller, BSN ’38, died on July 23, 2009, at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, Michigan, at the age of 95. She is survived by a son, Raymond. Gilda Bevilacqua, MN ’39, of Dixon, Illinois, formerly of Rockford, passed away Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at the age of 94. Maude Southon, MN ’40, of Richland, Michigan, died on April 6, 2009, at the age of 93. After graduating from Kalamazoo College in 1937, she attended FPB, where she received her master of nursing degree. She was a surgical nurse at University Hospitals of Cleveland for many years. She also worked for Borgess and Bronson Hospitals in Kalamazoo. After retiring from nursing, she volunteered for the Emergency Department at Borgess Medical Center, and for the American Red Cross blood banks. Mary (Snyder) Kelleway, MN ’42, died on March 15, 2009, in Sarasota, Florida, at the age of 91. She graduated from Elmira College in New York in 1939, and went on to receive her master of nursing degree at FPB. She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross, an active member of her church, and past president of the Women’s Golf Association. Helen Blagen Marquardt, MN ’44, died on July 27, 2009, at Golden Living Center in Madison, South Dakota, at age 89. She attended Saint Olaf College in Minnesota and later received her master of nursing degree from FPB. She served in the Navy Nurse Corps during World War II and following her active duty, worked at hospitals in San Francisco, Minneapolis, and Houston. She was also the director of nursing at Chicago’s Presbyterian Hospital and a public health nurse for Lake County in South Dakota. Betty Baus Newkirk, DN ’44, died on April 18, 2008. Shirley Lee Small, DN ’46, died on May 15, 2009, in Lewiston, Maine. She is survived by her children Dawna, Marsha, Sharon and Pamela. Helen Rush Walton, BSN ’46, died on June 3, 2009, at the age of 105, in Elkhart, Indiana. She was born on June 10, 1903, in Oberon, North Dakota, to Harry Rush and Cora Belle Baker. Her father had left Elkhart, Indiana, to homestead in the late 1800s. After her mother died when she was eight years old, the family moved to Montana where Helen grew up and completed her nurse’s training in Great Falls. She then moved to Denver to work as a nurse and married Charton Schreiner. They had a daughter, Shirley, who died when she was two years old. Charton also passed away within the year. Helen then moved to the Rush hometown of Elkhart in 1935. She did some study in the new field of public health, worked as the head of Red Cross Nursing Services and became the first full-time school nurse. In 1942, during World War II, she volunteered in response to the call for nurses to join the Army Nurse Corps. Because of her public health training, she was immediately made an officer and she asked to go overseas to more directly help the soldiers. She commanded 170 nurses and set up several hospitals. She vividly remembered the casualties from the Battle of the Bulge which raged quite near her hospital. She also remembered getting to know some of the high ranking officers, including General Omar Bradley. At the end of the war, despite being one of the highest ranking officers in the Army Nurse Corps, she decided to leave the military and return to her real love, school nursing. She attended Case Western Reserve University, receiving a bachelor of science in nursing degree and ultimately acquired a master of science in nursing degree from the University of Michigan. In 1955, she married L. Richard Walton and adopted his two sons, Robert and Steven. She served as superintendent of school nurses until her retirement in 1966. Survivors include son Robert Walton, MD (Roberta), daughter Shirley Wietnik, son Dr. Richard E. Walton (Sharon); daughter-in-law Laura Marasco, niece Alice Stillwell (Robert); 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Lyla Clark Duffy, DN ’47, died on July 26, 2009, at Stow Glen Health Care Center in Stow, Ohio. She was 83 years old. She received degrees in nursing from both FPB and St. Joseph College in Maine. She worked as a nurse at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, Ohio, and as a school nurse for the Ravenna School System. Marion E. Tschischeck, BSN ’47, died on July 7, 2009, in Palm City, Florida. She worked in public health in South Carolina before joining the Army Nurse Corps during World War II and served in the United States and France.
