OVERVIEW OF THE CITIBANK FRAUD Shivraj Puri, the relationship manager at Citibank’s Gurgoan branch allegedly lured rich clients in investing into fraudulent schemes by promising attractive returns supposedly backed by the bank. By virtue of being a relationship manager, he garnered trust of his clients and used that to his advantage. He made his clients sign blank documents, which were later used to transfer money. He forged a letter from the capital markets regulator, �� credence to the products he was offering and was successful in tapping wealthy investors. He siphoned off the funds garnered to the accounts of his family members and then routed the funds to the stock market through brokerage houses. The Citibank fraud got a lot of publicity due to its magnitude. But several small frauds that occur around us go unnoticed simply because the quantum of frauds are not huge nor are the affected investors powerful. Some time back, the wealth management arm of Kotak Mahindra Bank, another big private sector bank, was accused of misleading a customer into investing into a fund at a steep premium based on bogus claims.
