To illustrate the character of short l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> regional carriers, we further focus on four<br />

metropolitan areas – Chicago, Miami, New York-Northeastern NJ <strong>and</strong> Portl<strong>and</strong>, OR.<br />

These four areas provide a range of operat<strong>in</strong>g conditions, customers <strong>and</strong> potential<br />

opportunities. As will be seen, there are great differences among the railroads <strong>in</strong> terms<br />

of the miles operated, the number <strong>and</strong> types of customers served <strong>and</strong> products carried,<br />

as well as serv<strong>in</strong>g yards <strong>and</strong> Class I <strong>in</strong>terchanges.<br />
