Vice-Chancellor’s
message
An announcement that the Higher
Education Funding Council for England
is to provide £75 million in additional
funding to support Science was very
welcome news.
As you will have read in Precinct,
the University of Liverpool has received
millions of pounds of investment in
Chemistry in recent weeks, recognising
the importance of this subject – but there
is always more that needs to be done
and we are calling on our partners in
schools to help address this.
Science subjects are strategically
important to the economy and society
but vulnerable because of relatively low
student numbers. It is now recognised
that a key part of the problem with
science provision relates directly to the
lack of student demand and that urgent
action is required in schools to address
this. Chemistry, physics and some
engineering subjects are also particularly
expensive to provide which adds to the
financial impact on institutions.
Nationally, the new funding from
HEFCE will support chemistry, physics,
chemical engineering, and mineral,
metallurgy and materials engineering, to
help maintain provision in these subjects
in universities and colleges while
demand from students grows.
Too often when we discuss science
provision we get caught up in stories
about more science department
closures, but where there have been
some closures, this has often coincided
with expanded departments elsewhere.
We cannot overestimate how important
it is for the UK’s economy that we
continue to produce graduates in these
key subject areas. The UK science base
is second only to the US – and this has
been achieved on lower funding than our
competitors. If this success is to continue
adequate funding in schools, colleges
and universities is essential.
On a lighter note, I would like to wish
you all the very best seasons greetings
and I hope you enjoy your festive break.
A fresh approach
Meet new Chief Operating Officer Ron Calvert
S
eeking the views of students and
academics is key to the University’s
continued success, according to new
Chief Operating Officer Ron Calvert.
He came to the University in November
following a successful career in the NHS and
he says the health and education sectors
share many of the same challenges.
Ron said: “Some of the approaches which
are necessary in each organisation are very
similar, and the issues that they face are
similar too. There is a public accountability
factor and a sense of obligation to society, and
both hospitals and universities work in a quite
political environment in a fast moving world.”
Ron was born in Newcastle and was
educated in London and Salisbury before
returning to his home town to study Zoology at
University, and later an MBA. He discovered a
talent for squash and after graduation played
at a semi-professional level, while working in
the family wholesale bakery business.
When the miners’ strike hit the North East,
the business was forced to close and Ron
took his management experience to the Royal
Hull Hospitals. He then moved on to University
College London Hospitals. When their Chief
Executive was headhunted to University
Hospitals of Leicester, a £600 million NHS
trust which provides more healthcare than any
hospital in England, Ron followed him, taking
the role of Director of Operations.
He says he is now looking forward to using
his skills in the higher education sector.
“The University is a fascinating
environment,” Ron added, “and one of the
A bigger Russell
The Russell Group of research-led
universities has increased its total
membership to 20 institutions.
Queen’s University Belfast has been
invited to join the association, of which the
University of Liverpool is already a member.
The Russell Group has also appointed
its first Director General. Dr Wendy Piatt will
take up her appointment in January 2007.
She is currently Deputy Director in the
Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit and is former
Head of Education at the Institute of Public
Policy Research.
things that most attracted me is the added
dimensions of both commercial operations
and the international initiatives.
“The other thing that attracted me here is
that I had met the senior team and it struck me
that the University of Liverpool is a university
which is on the up. It has a very talented
top team which is striving to get it there.
This is obvious in the huge range of capital
projects which are underway and international
partnerships which are being forged, and
there is a big emphasis on research, as you
would expect from a Russell Group University.
}
The University
is a fascinating
environment.”
Ron Calvert
“I am meeting lots of people at the moment
and still forming impressions but an early view
is that I would like to see better engagement
with students; as consumers and partners. We
need to canvas their opinion more often. I also
want to meet more academics who are working
at the sharp end, because they are our key
players. I want to learn from them, hear where
they think I can help and get them involved
in shaping the future of the University. I know
the Vice-Chancellor’s message is ‘invest,
collaborate and grow’ and I want to back this
element to its degree programmes, giving
students real hands-on experience of the
construction industry.
All second year students will spend a week
in March 2007 at the Constructionarium in East
Anglia, a purpose built, two-hectare site which
provides a range of challenging teaching
Students will be involved in the planning,
costing, health and safety and practical
construction of each project. In the process
they are required to work as teams in terms of
effort and communication.
Dr Steve Millard from the Department
said: “The commitment from Edmund Nuttall
and Mott MacDonald is not just for one year.
They both see this as a rolling long-term
commitment to develop closer links with the
University and help with our CDIO-related
active learning and teaching projects.”
n The CDIO initiative is an innovative
The University has launched its Diversity and Equality of Opportunity Policy which aims to embed these principles within normal business
practice to ensure the University is accessible and viewed by everyone as a desirable place to work and study.
Frances Hewison, Head of Diversity and Equality, said: “We believe this is the best way to implement and sustain such wide-ranging
activities. Over the last year, the University has embedded diversity and equality into such processes as annual programme monitoring, the
academic planning process and professional development and review.”
The Policy provides a framework for the development of the University’s approach and emphasises the responsibility of all staff and students
to treat each other, and visitors to the University, with respect.
The detailed action plan which underpins the Policy is available on request from Frances Hewison and will be on the Diversity and Equality
A new strategy
Plan will tackle academic challenges
T
he University has put a new
Academic Strategy in place to take
into account the rapidly changing
environment in higher education.
Variations in funding, in particular the
increasing emphasis on accountability
to students and other stakeholders,
greater competition from other education
providers, and the growing importance of
knowledge transfer activities, mean that the
University must position itself effectively in
this dynamic environment.
we deal with postgraduate research students,
administration and recruitment.”
The delegation consisted of Professor
Professor Genshu Lu, Director of the
Research Institute of Higher Education,
Professor Xiaoping Song, Assistant to
Professor Wenquan Tao, who was also
part of the visiting group, has recently been
appointed President of Xi’an Jiaotong-
Liverpool University in Suzhou.
The Strategy takes into account
the needs of both undergraduate and
postgraduate students – from their
recruitment, through to graduation and
on into employment and their future
professional development. It also considers
the needs of staff throughout their careers
at the University.
In addition, maintaining and developing
the University’s research excellence, as
well as its collaboration and partnerships,
are vital parts of the new four-year policy.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Kelvin
Everest said: “In past years learning
and teaching, and research, have been
considered separately and had their own
could lead to ‘blind spots’ - contradictions
or gaps in our strategic thinking.
“Having a single strategy means that we
do not enter into commitments in one area
without due consideration of the other. We
are a research-intensive university, and we
need to ensure that this defining aspect of
our identity is properly integrated with our
approach to learning and teaching.”
New Alzheimer’s
treatment
Scientists have created a new chemical
compound that could be developed into
a drug treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.
The research team has used a family
of long chain sugars called Heparan
Sulphates (HS), found on nearly every
cell of the body, to produce a new
compound that can prevent the formation
of clumps of small proteins that form in
the brain. These clumps or ‘plaques’
disrupt the normal function of cells
leading to progressive memory loss
which is characteristic of Alzheimer’s.
Professor Jerry Turnbull and Dr Ed
Yates, from the School of Biological
Sciences, have discovered that the HS
sugars may play a key role in limiting the
development of the disease.
Professor Turnbull said: “We have
developed a new class of compounds
called ‘engineered heparins’ that could
possibly be developed into drugs to stop
small protein fragments called A-beta
peptides from forming in the brain and for
the first time treat the underlying cause
of Alzheimer’s. The compound, based
on the blood thinning drug, heparin, has
modified chemical structures designed
to optimise their desired activities and
reduce potential side effects.”
The compounds work by blocking the
beta-secretase enzyme, responsible for
snipping proteins into smaller fragments.
Despite its central importance to the
disease, there are currently no drug
treatments which target this enzyme
because it has proved difficult to find
inhibitors using traditional drug discovery
approaches. The new compounds,
based on the body’s natural substances,
may provide a novel route to effective
treatments for this debilitating disease.
Dr Middleton explained: “To pump blood
cells must contract and relax in a rhythmic
way. Contraction and relaxation occurs
through the controlled flow of ions into and
out of the cells. Imbalances in the levels of
sodium and calcium ions can compromise
T
he Lairdside Laser Engineering Centre gave new meaning to the
term ‘cutting-edge art’ when it helped British sculptor Alastair
Mackie with his latest project.
Alastair used the 3D laser cutting capability of the Centre’s Prima
Laserdyne machine to produce his latest work, Bipolar. The work
features a genuine US Marine’s helmet into which an Islamic fretwork
pattern has been cut.
Not surprisingly the laser cutting of the item was not a simple
engineering project. Martin Sharp, Manager at Lairdside, explains:
“The whole project required considerable effort from Alastair, a CAD-
CAM software company and ourselves. It’s often the case that when
an artist attempts to introduce a hi-tech engineering process into his
work, what often appears as a relatively simple process becomes
problematic as the bounds of the technology are pushed.”
The concept was straightforward – take a 3D scan of the helmet,
superimpose the fretwork pattern and then cut it. However, the steps
leading to the programming of the laser cutting machine were not so
simple. A 3D scan of the helmet was easy to procure but the overlay of
the pattern proved much more difficult as the computer data couldn’t
be processed by existing software.
Terry Antrobus, from software supplier CAMTEK, stepped in to help.
“Most models that are processed for laser cutting, or other operations
Fighting early deaths in Malawi
The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine
(LSTM) and Liverpool Associates in Tropical
Health (LATH) are part of a five-year
programme to help reduce maternal and
neonatal deaths in Malawi.
Women in developing countries are 250
times more likely to die from causes related
to pregnancy than women in Europe. Malawi
in East Africa has one of the highest maternal
mortality ratios in the world, estimated as
984 deaths per 100,000 live births. Lack of
skilled birth attendants, drugs, equipment and
appropriate emergency obstetric care (EOC),
as well as poor access to health services, are all
contributory factors, particularly in rural areas.
The Health Foundation is funding a
programme to tackle this problem in three
districts of Malawi with a total population of
2,800,000. The programme, implemented by
a consortium which includes LSTM, aims to
reduce maternal and newborn deaths through
quality improvements in health facilities
and by mobilising communities through
women’s groups.
The LSTM team, which is headed by
Senior Lecturer Dr Nynke van den Broek, has
just completed a baseline survey in the three
districts, which are targeted in the project, to
assess the existing facilities. She said: “We
discovered that out of the 73 health facilities
which offer maternal healthcare services only
nine hospitals provided the full range of eight
life-saving EOC services and none of the rest
of the health facilities has all the recommended
six basic EOC services.
“The survey also showed that only 40%
of births are attended by a nurse, midwife or
doctor and that many women with obstetric
complications never reach a health facility.
Most hospitals and health centres are
understaffed and rural health centres usually
have only one or two midwives which are
inadequate to ensure continuity of services 24
hours a day, seven days a week.”
A main focus of the Consortium’s work with
the staff from the health facilities is to address
the shortcomings in quality of maternal and
newborn healthcare services, which includes
development of standards for quality of
obstetric care and maternal deaths reviews,
which are a starting point to initiate action on
the issues arising.
such
as milling
or turning,
are generated
by dedicated
engineering CAD
programmes, whose
formats are well-defined so
the software has no problem,”
he said. “However, this model
was derived from a 3D scan, with a
superimposed geometry. The result was a file that
could not directly work with the usual software, and it was necessary to
import the model into a CAD programme and ensure that it became an
‘engineering’ entity.”
The piece was completed with only hours to spare before Alastair
flew to Los Angeles for the exhibition. He said: “I was overjoyed when
the helmet arrived by courier the afternoon before my flight. To hold in
my hands what I’d only seen on a computer screen was thrilling.”
The piece was exhibited at the Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles
in Alastair’s solo show Sticks and Stones and six copies will be cut as a
limited edition.
Colourful beginnings
Symbolism evidence unearthed by Archaeologist
ASenior Lecturer in Archaeology has
found evidence from Africa that
colours were being used in a symbolic,
rather than purely functional, way perhaps
300,000 years ago, considerably earlier than
previously thought.
Dr Lawrence Barham has been studying
tools and other artefacts left by ancient
humans at a site in Zambia. He discovered
that the range of mineral pigments, or ochres,
found there hints at the use of paint, perhaps
to mark the body.
If correct, it would push back the earliest
known example of abstract thinking by at least
100,000 years. Being able to conceptualise
- the ability to let one thing represent another
- was a giant leap in human evolution.
Larry said: “As an archaeologist I am
interested to find out where colour symbolism
first appears because for colour symbolism
to work it must be based on language.
Evolutionary psychologists tell us that the
neural capacity for language existed 500,000
years ago, so we should expect some
evidence to appear about this time, which is
before the evolution of our own species.”
His work over the past 10 years has been
based in Zambia where evidence of pigment
Newsinbrief...
use has been found at a site known as Twin
Rivers, an old cave complex occupied by
humans some 170,000-300,000 years ago.
The tools found at Twin Rivers show
evidence of increasing sophistication with
handheld tools replaced by small blades and
flakes that had to be attached to handles.
The emergence of this ‘composite’ technology
coincided with the systematic use of ochres.
Ochre is a soft stone that contains iron
oxides and it comes in a range of colours; at
Twin Rivers there are red, yellow, brown, pink,
black and even purple.
Larry continued: “If they are scraped, they
will produce a powder which can be mixed
with animal fat, for example, and used as
a paint, and I think that ancient humans in
Zambia wiped these pigments on their bodies,
using them in rituals - just as paints are still
used in some cultures today, to mark the
passage of warrior to elder, or the coming of
age of boys and girls.”
A number of claims have previously been
made for conceptual thinking in humans
hundreds of thousands of years ago. Many
of these claims relate to pieces of rock that
are said to represent the human form. The
The
Park it!
Dear Precinct,
I was interested to read in November’s issue of Precinct
the latest whining from people who think they have a
divine right to park their cars wherever they like - double
yellow lines, on pavements, restricted parking zones.
We now have our own equivalent of the National Rifle
Association (NRA). The NRA considers that every
citizen has the right to bear arms regardless of the
consequences - here it seems that every car owner has
the right to park regardless of the circumstances. At a
time when the planet faces the incalculable threat of
global warming it seems that the only thing on the mind
of your average motorist is “where’s my parking space.”
Dr Steve Crowley
Department of Earth & Ocean Sciences
On the buses
Dear Precinct,
After reading the opinions in the November copy of
Precinct, I was appalled to see a member of staff produce
the statement - “I object to fighting for a space with a
student who lives two streets away on a perfectly good bus
route.” As a member of staff that has recently also ceased
to be a student, I find this to be not only a ridiculous
statement but also a very insulting comment.
While I appreciate that it may be frustrating for
members of staff that have difficulty finding a parking
space, it’s a simple fact that unlike staff permits, student
permits are not granted in anything other than essential
circumstances. I’m sure the statement is somewhat
hyperbolic, but it certainly isn’t the case that a student that
‘lives two streets away’ (or any other ridiculous situation) is
likely to be granted a parking permit.
In any event, the member of staff concerned would
do very well to remember that without the students, the
University simply would cease to exist! I firmly believe
that a culture of ‘blaming the students’ is (and should be)
entirely unwelcome in a HEI of this standing.
Putting up the barriers
Dear Precinct,
I’d like to echo the sentiments expressed in the
November issue of Precinct regarding the farcical parking
arrangements currently in existence on campus. Having
arrived late due to attending a dental appointment I drove
round campus for over an hour looking for a space but to
no avail. In the end I took a day’s holiday.
The most frustrating aspect is that while Facilities
Management seem to have no qualms in clamping staff
inappropriately parked, the same vigour does not seem
to be applied to those people parked without a valid
badge who are obviously at the root of the problem. The
more cynical among us might think that staff are having
to suffer this inconvenience to make the inequitable
implementation of car parking charges more palatable!
(name supplied)
Response from Patrick Hackett, Director of Facilities Management:
“We would urge all staff to conserve energy by turning off
their lights if they know they are last to leave their offices.
“In many of the University’s buildings, the night cleaning
New treatment
A scientist at the Liverpool School of
Tropical Medicine has helped identify a
new drug treatment for the disfiguring
disease Elephantiasis.
The distressing condition, caused by
filarial worms entering the patient’s blood
stream, is transmitted by mosquitoes.
The infection leads to gross swelling of
the legs or scrotum. Anti-worm drugs
are used to treat the disease by killing
most of the worm’s larvae in the blood
but they have little or no effect on the
adult worms which cause the conditions
leading to the swelling, nor do they halt
the progression of the symptoms once
the disease has developed.
Doxycycline, which attacks the bacteria
inside the worm, not only kills adult
worms but also helps to relieve the
symptoms in those who have already
developed the disease.
Dr Taylor said: “The important
breakthrough with this trial is to show
that in addition to the anti-parasitic
effects of antibiotic treatment, we can
also improve the lives of individuals
suffering from the stigmatising
elephantiasis. We have also shown that
a shorter course of antibiotic is effective
responsible for causing the disease.”
Staff, students and volunteers have joined
herbaceous border which was last
redesigned in 1958.
Paul Cook, who is overseeing the
project, said: “When I started at Ness
Latest news from Ness Botanical Gardens
in February 2002, the long herbaceous
border had changed little in design and
some of the plants, notably the large
Pampass Grass, Cortadeira selloana
‘Sunningdale Silver’, had survived from
the 1960s.
“After waiting a season or two to assess
was being viewed by visitors, I decided to
make some changes. Grass paths were
add some new varieties into the scheme
so, over the last two years, with help from
the garden volunteers, the herbaceous
borders have been given an overhaul.”
Segway or not Segway?
The Segway Personal Transporter (PT) is described
as an environmentally-friendly alternative to cars,
buses and trains, able to go anywhere a pedestrian
can. It claims to be able to take you 24 miles at
up to 12.5mph on one battery charge, emitting no
greenhouse gases and needing minimal parking space.
And at around £4,000, it’s certainly cheaper than a car.
So, could the Segway be a viable alternative to the car and,
more importantly, could it be the answer to our campus
parking problems? Gareth Brandwood from Facilities
Management certainly thinks so, and he has started a
petition to make them legal in the UK.
“I originally bought one so that I didn’t have to
take my car on short journeys around town. I live just
outside Liverpool so, with parking charges and congestion,
it was easier to use the Segway. I bring it into work sometimes and I’ve
even been around ASDA on it!”
Although it is widely used across the world – by the postal service
and the police among others - the Segway PT is currently illegal in the
UK except on private property with the owner’s permission.
“The Highways Act of 1835 renders the Segway PT illegal,” says
Gareth, “but, if we are trying to find more sustainable forms of transport
for the future, the legislation needs modernising.”
Gareth has set up a petition to legalise devices such as the Segway
PT on pavements and cycle paths in the UK. More than 400 people
have signed up to date and Gareth is hoping for a formal response from
the Prime Minister’s Office when the petition is sent in March 2007.
“My team is fragmented all around the campus so it
would be good for getting from lab to lab but I’m not
sure I’d drive to work on one.”
Steven Bode, Engineering
“All the Building Managers should have them for
going between buildings and the mail room. It would
certainly be easier on the knees than a bike!”
Brian McDonald, Area Building Manager
“I think you might turn up to work a bit dishevelled
if you rode in on one of these, and I don’t think
there are any female changing rooms here to tidy
yourself up.”
Caroline Diaz, Research and Business Services
“It’s great fun to ride, but where would you park it?”
Richard Murphy, first year student, Architecture
“They look like they would take up far too much room
on a pavement, they’d be worse than buggies! I don’t
think we’ve got the climate for them either.”
A day in the life of...
Margaret Gascoigne
PA to the Vice-Chancellor, Margaret retires this
month. Precinct takes a look at a day in her life…
Typical day
08:00
Our day always starts early whether the VC is
in Liverpool or not. I prepare the agenda for
the day and documents for him in advance, as
I do for all of his meetings, but you never know
what might crop up unexpectedly. Overnight
emails usually have an element of surprise
contained within them.
08.30
Double check the VC’s diary for the day to
make sure everything he needs is ready.
Organising the diary takes up the majority of
my time. The VC has a number of roles, all
of which are hugely demanding. Alongside
his primary job here, I also have to take into
account his role as President of UUK and
as Chairman of the Culture Company, when
arranging meetings, events and visits. He also
has several other commitments which, while
not as high-profile, are just as important and
need to be factored in too.
09:30
I have my daily meeting with Becky, who
supports me in the office, about next week’s
diary and travel commitments. Next my
daily phone meeting with the PA to the Chief
Executive of UUK; today it’s about forthcoming
ministerial meetings. Although people might
see me as the ‘public face’ of the office, it
really is a team effort to keep things running
smoothly and I really appreciate the support
of all my colleagues, on both a professional
and personal level. I have regular contact with
all of the PAs to the VC’s key contacts and it’s
through these vital relationships that I am able
to do my job most effectively.
10.00
A diary clash arises which needs some careful
negotiation. Invitations to three different events
on the same evening have come in. Quite often
I have to make decisions on the VC’s behalf
as to which events take priority but in this case
all three are high-priority! An MP, HEFCE and a
charity to which the University gives bursaries
all require the VC’s presence. I have a word
with him between meetings and he manages
to get the timing of the ministerial meeting
rearranged slightly so that we can please
everyone.
12.30
Quick lunch, then start to prepare the VC’s
papers for Planning and Resources Committee
tomorrow. Quite a lot of briefing papers are
needed over the next few days and much of my
time is spent putting these together. Knowing
how busy he is, I expect he will read them on
the train down to London so they need to be
ready today.
15.00
The emails never stop but the majority I deal
with directly, putting aside the most timecritical
ones for discussion with the VC. Now
that Professor Graham Dockray has been
appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor, it takes
the pressure off a bit as he represents the VC
at events our diary can’t accommodate and
deals with a large number of issues on the VC’s
behalf.
16.00
Take a call asking me to get some mince
pies for the delegation travelling to China.
Apparently, the Chinese academics at our new
institution in Suzhou have requested them!
I often get asked to buy presents for visiting
academics or VIPs, but I’ve never been asked
for mince pies before!
17.00
Finally get five minutes (literally) with the VC to
hand over the papers he needs and discuss
anything that has come in that he needs to do
urgently. We don’t often have the luxury of a
face-to-face briefing, but I’m always in contact
with him on the phone, email or Blackberry so
we are constantly communicating.
17.30
One last check of the email then it’s time
to go home. The thing about this job is you
never know what’s going to happen tomorrow.
It’s very unpredictable and sometimes quite
stressful but it’s ultimately been very rewarding.
CSD migration
The Computing Services Department
(CSD) has successfully managed the
migration of all staff and student email
and calendar services to Microsoft
Exchange – and even invented
some new software to help make
the transition as smooth as possible
for everyone.
Iain Stinson, Director of CSD, said:
“Early in the project planning stage, we
decided on the big bang approach,
closing the old student and staff
services down immediately the new
services were brought on line.
“Unlike a number of other
universities which have migrated to
Microsoft Exchange, we decided to
move all existing email and diary data
for our users, rather than leaving it to
each individual to do it for themselves.”
Microsoft provides a basic tool
to transfer email from other systems
into Exchange, which CSD were able
to adapt and use. However, the only
software available that could take the
University’s existing diary data and
transfer it into Microsoft Exchange had
a prohibitively high price tag, so instead
one of the project team wrote a tool
in-house to migrate the calendar data.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor
Drummond Bone, said “This has been
a major undertaking successfully
completed. Staff and students have
been transferred to the new system
with minimal inconvenience to them,
including moving all their data from the
old system into the new environment.
Email and calendars are both of
critical importance to the workings of
the institution and the new system will
ensure that the University now has a
sustainable and resilient infrastructure
Sciences has welcomed 12 new
postgraduate students, funded
by European Union Marie Curie Training
Fellowships, who will use post-genomic
science to work on the most important
areas of modern biology.
They have travelled from six European
countries (Germany, Hungary, Italy,
Lithuania, Poland and Spain), attracted
by the research opportunities offered by
the School. The Fellows will undertake
doctoral projects in two key areas.
One is the sensing and response to
the environment by plants (SENSIBLE
programme, led by Dr Meriel Jones),
where new developments are important
to respond to climate change and for
the agri-food industry, the EU’s biggest
economic sector.
LEFT:
The other is to establish the function
of molecules such as proteins and
polysaccharides within large assemblies,
relevant to the healthcare, agrochemical
and pharmaceutical industries
(MOLFUN programme, led by Professor
Dave Fernig).
The Fellows are among 37
postgraduate students who started
research projects within the School this
autumn. The European Union funds
the training of researchers at excellent
European universities through the Marie
Curie Actions so they can develop their
own careers within areas important to the
community’s economy and future.
One further Marie Curie programme,
led by Dr Trish Murray (KIDSTEM
programme), also starts soon at the
School. This is a Research Training
Network of researchers from six groups
in Austria, Germany, Italy and UK. They
will investigate the potential of adult and
embryonic stem cells for regeneration of
damaged kidneys.
The history of Holger Hoock
Holger Hoock, Lecturer in the School of History, was
one of 24 scholars from only 10 UK universities to be
awarded a prestigious 2006 Philip Leverhulme Prize
for his internationally-recognised research in British
Cultural History.
Holger’s research has influenced two cognate
areas central to British and European history and the
wider humanities: the relationships between the state,
the arts, cultural patronage and nationalism; and the
history of commemoration and memory. His research
has expanded the boundaries of historical inquiry
through interdisciplinary research and he has also
engaged in innovative ways with public history and
the museum world.
Holger was appointed in 2005 under the Future Research Leaders Scheme. The prize
of £70k over two years will contribute greatly to the University’s RAE submission.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Dockray said: “Holger’s award is excellent
news for both the School of History and the University as a whole. It allows us to build on
our expertise in this area in advance of the RAE and enhances the University’s reputation
initiative which recognises trust,
empathy and communication are the key to
a healthy doctor/patient relationship.
The Higher Education Funding Council
(HEFCE) has awarded £4.5 million
to develop a Centre for Excellence in
Developing Professionalism in Medical
Students. This will allow the University
to build on its internationally-renowned
medical curriculum which is structured
around Problem-Based Learning (PBL),
and integrates the learning of basic medical
science with clinical practice.
The five-year project will involve
developing a programme of teaching
that will ensure students graduate with
the professional attitudes increasingly
recognised as important by the NHS in 21st
Century medicine. When fully developed,
the programme is likely to be extended to
medical schools across the UK.
Dr Tom Kennedy, Consultant
Rheumatologist and Director of Clinical
Studies in the Faculty of Medicine, has
been working with Dr Helen O’Sullivan,
Project Director, to build the reflective
learning aspect of the programme by
developing log books that score students
for participation in class and role play.
“Trust, empathy and communication are
absolutely integral to professionalism and it
is these attitudes and qualities that we are
trying to instil among future doctors in this
project,” he said.
“But it’s not about communication
for its own sake. The development of
the patient/doctor relationship has huge
benefits. In Rheumatology, for example,
it’s very important that we encourage
patients to play an active role in their
disease management.
“We try and foster a relationship of
openness and mutual trust. Patients
welcome this – they are becoming more
pro-active in learning about their disease
through the internet and frequently want to
understand more about their condition.”
The new programme will place huge
emphasis on extended role play to
challenge students in their approach to
learning. A session focusing on a patient
with alcoholism, for example, will require
the student to spend several hours outside
the classroom researching the condition
and considering how alcoholism affects
sufferers and their families. Other types
of role play might include ethical issues
such as explaining the options open to
a Jehovah’s Witness whose child needs
a blood transfusion, or helping a relative
to feel comfortable with a decision they
have made to withdraw life support to
a loved one.
The Medical Professionalism
programme will also develop mechanisms
of recognising and rewarding excellence
in clinical teaching for staff and enshrining
within the medical curriculum a system for
personal development, career planning
and reflection on professionalism that
allows a seamless progression to
postgraduate practice.
Stationary study
Crosby beach statues help in marine biology
M
any people will be sorry to see the
statues on Crosby beach go, if
it is decided not to keep them in
Merseyside and they are packed off to their
next temporary home in New York – but a
team of marine biologists from the School of
Biological Sciences will be sadder than most.
In the year since its installation, Another
Place, the controversial artwork by sculptor
Antony Gormley, has become an unlikely
living laboratory, home to a thriving colony of
barnacles which have provided the team with
some important information on colonisation.
Dr Leonie Robinson, who led the study,
said: “The installation of the statues has
given us a unique opportunity to study the
colonisation of a man-made structure on the
shoreline. Because each statue is identical
in size and shape and made from the same
material, they provide a perfectly replicated
study design to test for the effects different
locations have on barnacle settlement.
“Each one is subject to different prevailing
currents and tides; some are totally
submerged at high water whereas some are
not, and it’s these variations that are crucial in
the study.
“We are really using them to test some well
established theories on the colonisation of
intertidal rocky shores. Although the key facts
about barnacle colonisation are well-known, it
is rare that such a perfect opportunity arises
to test all of them together in such a well-
designed ecological experiment.”
The idea to use art as a vehicle for
scientific research came as a result of a
discussion between Dr Robinson and her
colleague Dr Dave Wilson, who is also
involved with the study. They realised that the
Gormley figures were a unique opportunity
to have 100 perfectly matched but randomly
distributed test sites – the sort of replication
that is almost impossible to find otherwise.
The unusual study was funded by the British
Ecological Society and, if the statues are
relocated, the team hopes to set up some
collaborative research with scientists in
New York.
VELO-drama
Airport restrictions cause problems for Physics
I
magine standing in front of an exploding
is going as it rushes past you, in the
hope of reconstructing a vase that you think
might have stood in the upstairs front left
bedroom. Particle physicists at the University
are building a device called the VELO to do
exactly that at the subatomic scale – but not
everything has gone according to plan…
The VELO is part of the LHCb experiment
being constructed at CERN, the European
centre for particle physics in Geneva. It is
so precise that it can detect the position of
particles passing through it to better than
a hundredth of a millimetre. Not only that,
but it is capable of doing so 40 million times
a second.
Dr Tara Shears from the Department
of Physics said: “The vase that particle
physicists are trying to find in this case is a
type of fundamental particle called a b quark.
The key to identifying a b quark (which lives
for a millionth of a millionth of a second) is to
reconstruct the very short distance it travelled
in that time – that’s why the VELO has to
be so incredibly accurate if it is going to
do its job.”
Liverpool physicists have completed
the assembly of the first three (out of 42)
VELO modules, the culmination of 10
years’ work. According to Professor Themis
Bowcock, leader of the Liverpool LHCb
team: “This is probably the most complicated
detector of its type ever produced, and is a
showcase for our scientific programme and
engineering skills.”
n At the time of going to print, the Gormley
statues are due to remain on Crosby beach
until at least March 2007, while a planning
appeal to keep them is considered. While
that appeal is pending Sefton Council will not
enforce the removal of the statues.
transported, however, the tight hand baggage
restrictions resulting from the potential terrorist
threat meant that the boxes couldn’t go in the
A solution had to be found, so Professor
modules to CERN personally. Only another
The Capital of Culture Steering Group,
chaired by Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor
Kelvin Everest, meets quarterly to discuss the
around the campus to avoid clashes internally
and within the city where feasible, and to
provide useful links and support.
The University has set aside a central fund
to support initiatives. Departments can bid for
support for their projects and will be asked
to complete an application form providing an
Like honey to the bee
Dr Craig Roberts on his love of beekeeping
Dr Craig Roberts, Lecturer in
Evolutionary Psychology & Behavioural
Ecology in the School of Biological
Sciences, has taken up a very unusual hobby.
He told Precinct how relaxing with a book
at Christmas turned into an obsession…
“By chance, I picked up a book on
beekeeping last Christmas - by New Year, I
had decided this was for me.
I was intrigued by the bees’ complex
behaviour and the challenge to work
with them to achieve a joint aim – honey
production. This was confirmed after a
weekend course in April, and in May I bought
my first bees at an auction on the Wirral.
Driving the hive through the Tunnel was a
scary experience!
Beekeeping is one of the oldest forms
of food production and it appeals to the
‘Good Lifer’ in me. I have two hives on a local
farm, but plan to move one to my allotment
next year.
My first colony produced 40 jars of honey,
with enough left over for the hive to survive
over the winter. I sold most of these within
a few weeks; others are being saved for
Christmas presents and I’ve entered some in
local honey shows. Beekeepers also make
mead or collect wax to make candles or
furniture polish.
I show the bees to anyone I can. Everyone
worries about stings, me included! I’m happy
to say no visitor to the hives has yet been
stung, although I have been. Ironically, it was
once we’d left the hives, I hadn’t checked I
was clear of bees before I took my suit off - I
do now!
Generally they’re calm and take little notice
as we work through the hive.
It’s an ideal hobby. With one or two hives,
you only need spend about an hour or two
a week between April and August. Pick a
good day and enjoy being outside, watching
the workers come and go. There is a ready
community of beekeepers to help you out,
with active local societies and some real
characters - and there’s always more to learn.
No year and no colony is the same.”
