Elect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> success<br />

It was congr<strong>at</strong>ul<strong>at</strong>ions all around <strong>for</strong><br />

w<strong>in</strong>ners of the Carol<strong>in</strong>e Elliot Memorial<br />

Prize <strong>in</strong> the Faculty of Medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Faculty held an ‘Elective<br />

Even<strong>in</strong>g’ to celebr<strong>at</strong>e the<br />

achievements of Laura Astall, Ian<br />

Riley and Manoj Wijes<strong>in</strong>ghe, who had<br />

taken an ‘elective’ module <strong>in</strong> their<br />

third year. An elective can be any<br />

medic<strong>in</strong>e-rel<strong>at</strong>ed work last<strong>in</strong>g five<br />

weeks, either <strong>in</strong> the UK or abroad.<br />

<strong>The</strong> prize-w<strong>in</strong>ners gave<br />

present<strong>at</strong>ions on their elective<br />

experiences to an audience which<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded the parents of Carol<strong>in</strong>e Elliot,<br />

a medical student who was killed <strong>in</strong><br />

an accident, who k<strong>in</strong>dly don<strong>at</strong>e the<br />

annual prize of £600.<br />

At the same event, student Nick<br />

Peterson was presented with a<br />

prize of £500 <strong>for</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g third <strong>in</strong><br />

the Medical Defence Union (MDU)<br />

N<strong>at</strong>ional Elective Competition.<br />

A short film<br />

Life <strong>in</strong> Liverpool caught on camera <strong>for</strong> IRRO<br />

A<br />

short film about life as an<br />

<strong>in</strong>tern<strong>at</strong>ional student <strong>in</strong> Liverpool has<br />

been launched by the Intern<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

Recruitment and Rel<strong>at</strong>ions Office (IRRO).<br />

Campus <strong>in</strong> the City, which was produced<br />

by Corpor<strong>at</strong>e Communic<strong>at</strong>ions, <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

footage of students, the University campus<br />

and city landmarks. It is available to view<br />

on the IRRO website and will be used<br />

alongside the University prospectus to show<br />

potential students wh<strong>at</strong> the University has<br />

to offer.<br />

Ursula Henry, Deputy Director of IRRO,<br />

said: “Not all <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>at</strong>ional students are able<br />

to visit Liverpool and so we thought we<br />

would br<strong>in</strong>g Liverpool to them by cre<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

this short <strong>in</strong>troductory film. It is important<br />

th<strong>at</strong> the students have a voice and so we<br />

were keen to let our current students show<br />

A magnetic <strong>for</strong>ce<br />

MARIARC competition to <strong>at</strong>tract new researchers<br />

<strong>The</strong> Magnetic Resonance and Image Analysis Research <strong>Centre</strong> (MARIARC) has<br />

held a competition to <strong>at</strong>tract new researchers to the <strong>Centre</strong>.<br />

MARIARC has st<strong>at</strong>e-of-the-art neuroimag<strong>in</strong>g facilities, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a 3 T Siemens<br />

Magnetic Resonance Imag<strong>in</strong>g (MRI) system and a Magnetoencephalography (MEG)<br />

system. Together, these technologies can capture the bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> action, with both<br />

excellent sp<strong>at</strong>ial and temporal resolution.<br />

<strong>The</strong> competition was designed to encourage researchers across the University to<br />

use these facilities <strong>in</strong> their research, and the eight f<strong>in</strong>alists presented their proposals to<br />

a wide audience.<br />

Dr Sophie Wuerger from the School of Psychology won with her proposal <strong>for</strong> a<br />

functional MRI (fMRI) project entitled Is multisensorial biological motion special?<br />

K<strong>at</strong>e MacIver of the Pa<strong>in</strong> Research Institute was runner-up with an fMRI study of<br />

central nervous system reorganis<strong>at</strong>ion follow<strong>in</strong>g sp<strong>in</strong>al cord <strong>in</strong>jury.<br />

those th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g of jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the University wh<strong>at</strong><br />

their life is like <strong>in</strong> Liverpool.<br />

“Intern<strong>at</strong>ional students are particularly<br />

<strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g about wh<strong>at</strong> life is like<br />

here. For example, wh<strong>at</strong> sports facilities we<br />

have, wh<strong>at</strong> the halls of residence are like<br />

and how accessible the city centre is. By<br />

depict<strong>in</strong>g this on film, potential students can<br />

get a real look <strong>at</strong> the University and hear the<br />

op<strong>in</strong>ions of those who know it best.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> film highlights the lead<strong>in</strong>g position<br />

th<strong>at</strong> the University has <strong>in</strong> the UK and<br />

worldwide <strong>in</strong> areas of research. A broad<br />

range of the facilities and societies available<br />

to students fe<strong>at</strong>ure <strong>in</strong> the film, rang<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

the<strong>at</strong>re groups to sports.<br />
