Help<strong>in</strong>g acceler<strong>at</strong>e professional development <strong>in</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e<br />

T<br />

he University is lead<strong>in</strong>g the way<br />

<strong>in</strong> medical educ<strong>at</strong>ion with a new<br />

<strong>in</strong>iti<strong>at</strong>ive which recognises trust,<br />

emp<strong>at</strong>hy and communic<strong>at</strong>ion are the key to<br />

a healthy doctor/p<strong>at</strong>ient rel<strong>at</strong>ionship.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Higher Educ<strong>at</strong>ion Fund<strong>in</strong>g Council<br />

(HEFCE) has awarded £4.5 million<br />

to develop a <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Excellence</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

Develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Professionalism</strong> <strong>in</strong> Medical<br />

Students. This will allow the University<br />

to build on its <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>at</strong>ionally-renowned<br />

medical curriculum which is structured<br />

around Problem-Based Learn<strong>in</strong>g (PBL),<br />

and <strong>in</strong>tegr<strong>at</strong>es the learn<strong>in</strong>g of basic medical<br />

science with cl<strong>in</strong>ical practice.<br />

<strong>The</strong> five-year project will <strong>in</strong>volve<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g a programme of teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

th<strong>at</strong> will ensure students gradu<strong>at</strong>e with<br />

the professional <strong>at</strong>titudes <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly<br />

recognised as important by the NHS <strong>in</strong> 21st<br />

Century medic<strong>in</strong>e. When fully developed,<br />

the programme is likely to be extended to<br />

medical schools across the UK.<br />

Dr Tom Kennedy, Consultant<br />

Rheum<strong>at</strong>ologist and Director of Cl<strong>in</strong>ical<br />

Studies <strong>in</strong> the Faculty of Medic<strong>in</strong>e, has<br />

been work<strong>in</strong>g with Dr Helen O’Sullivan,<br />

Project Director, to build the reflective<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g aspect of the programme by<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g log books th<strong>at</strong> score students<br />

<strong>for</strong> particip<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>in</strong> class and role play.<br />

“Trust, emp<strong>at</strong>hy and communic<strong>at</strong>ion are<br />

absolutely <strong>in</strong>tegral to professionalism and it<br />

is these <strong>at</strong>titudes and qualities th<strong>at</strong> we are<br />

try<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>stil among future doctors <strong>in</strong> this<br />

project,” he said.<br />

“But it’s not about communic<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

<strong>for</strong> its own sake. <strong>The</strong> development of<br />

the p<strong>at</strong>ient/doctor rel<strong>at</strong>ionship has huge<br />

benefits. In Rheum<strong>at</strong>ology, <strong>for</strong> example,<br />

it’s very important th<strong>at</strong> we encourage<br />

p<strong>at</strong>ients to play an active role <strong>in</strong> their<br />

disease management.<br />

“We try and foster a rel<strong>at</strong>ionship of<br />

openness and mutual trust. P<strong>at</strong>ients<br />

welcome this – they are becom<strong>in</strong>g more<br />

pro-active <strong>in</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g about their disease<br />

through the <strong>in</strong>ternet and frequently want to<br />

understand more about their condition.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> new programme will place huge<br />

emphasis on extended role play to<br />

challenge students <strong>in</strong> their approach to<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g. A session focus<strong>in</strong>g on a p<strong>at</strong>ient<br />

with alcoholism, <strong>for</strong> example, will require<br />

the student to spend several hours outside<br />

the classroom research<strong>in</strong>g the condition<br />

and consider<strong>in</strong>g how alcoholism affects<br />

sufferers and their families. Other types<br />

of role play might <strong>in</strong>clude ethical issues<br />

such as expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the options open to<br />

a Jehovah’s Witness whose child needs<br />

a blood transfusion, or help<strong>in</strong>g a rel<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

to feel com<strong>for</strong>table with a decision they<br />

have made to withdraw life support to<br />

a loved one.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Medical <strong>Professionalism</strong><br />

programme will also develop mechanisms<br />

of recognis<strong>in</strong>g and reward<strong>in</strong>g excellence<br />

<strong>in</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>ical teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> staff and enshr<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

with<strong>in</strong> the medical curriculum a system <strong>for</strong><br />

personal development, career plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and reflection on professionalism th<strong>at</strong><br />

allows a seamless progression to<br />

postgradu<strong>at</strong>e practice.<br />

Professor Ian Gilmore, Consultant<br />

Physician and Gastroenterologist <strong>at</strong><br />

the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and<br />

Honorary Professor <strong>at</strong> the University of<br />

Liverpool, per<strong>for</strong>med the official open<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
