Question Time
For Yamaha
TThe Dugan-MY16 automated
mic mixing card for Yamaha
digital mixers is currently in
use on BBC One’s Question Time,
the UK’s flagship political debate
programme. Question Time, which
is recorded as live, features a high
Clear-Com has installed FreeSpeak
digital wireless intercoms at the Madrid
headquarters of Spain’s national
broadcaster, Television Espanola (TVE).
Forming two separate networks for
two stations, the systems comprise 40
FreeSpeak antennas and 70 FreeSpeak
beltpacks. The digital matrix enables
coverage across virtually all areas of
the stations, and has contributed to the
improvement of the broadcasters overall
workflow. Operating license-free in the
1.88 to 1.93 GHz frequency band, FreeSpeak
permits interconnection in all critical
production areas, with antennas dispersed
throughout the facility.
Aspen Media has announced that it will be
at BVE North for the first time this month,
bringing three renowned German audio
manufacturers to the show – DirectOut,
RTW, and Jünger Audio. DirectOut is
showcasing its range of MADI tools, while
RTW is bringing its range of EBU R128
compliant TouchMonitor loudness and PPM
meters, including the new TM3-3G. Jünger
Audio will be advising visitors who need
to manage loudness, with its T*AP eight
channel audio processor on display.
Danish broadcaster TV2 East has recently
purchased a Studer Vista 5 digital mixing
console for its studio in Vordingborg. TV2
East is primarily using the Studer Vista 5 M2
console for news and sports programming,
along with regional talk shows and
documentaries. “This Vista 5 console has
the best audio quality I’ve heard from a
broadcast console,” said Kasper Thor Larsen,
Head of Technology at TV2 East.
BeTV is the first broadcaster in Belgium
with Jünger Audio’s T*AP Television Audio
Processors. It has installed the processors
into its transmission chain to control audio
loudness levels across its entire output.
“..Junger Audio’s T*AP units corresponded
exactly to our needs as they offer compact
material, clear management, one band
audio for loudness treatment, integration
with Dolby technology and engineering
dialogue, all in a very easy to use format,”
said Paulin Deiautte, Engineering and
Maintenance Manager at BeTV.
from the audience, and is broadcast
from a different UK venue each
week. There can be up to 10
omnidirectional microphones open
at the same time, and the Dugan
MY-16 is helpful in this application
because, instead of keeping the
channel levels low and having to
rapidly bring up a fader
when someone speaks,
the operator can keep
all the channels open
at the required level
without loss of quality.
This is acheived by gain
sharing, which allocates
Wohler Technologies has announced
that the Linear Acoustic AERO.file
audio processor and loudness manager
will be offered exclusively by Wohler as
a turnkey solution: WohlerLoudness.
“We’re building on our acquisition
of RadiantGrid Technologies
and extending the broad set of
RadiantGrid features by creating
tightly built appliance and software
packages that solve broadcasters’
most challenging issues,” said
Carl Dempsey, Wohler President
and CEO. “Enabling new levels of
efficiency in file-based loudness and
audio control, WohlerLoudness is
just another example of this initiative.
We’re excited to offer this acclaimed
loudness management technology,
pioneered by the recognised industry
leader, Linear Acoustic.”
WohlerLoudness provides filebased
inspection and correction
software that enables users to identify
and correct loudness issues at ingest,
before they become a problem.
the amount of overall gain across
all of the open mic channels.
With a number of channels open,
this reduces background noise.
However, once a panellist starts
to speak, the card automatically
allocates all the available gain to that
channel, ensuring they can be heard
and effectively muting the rest.
Should another panellist interrupt,
their microphone automatically
opens and shares the gain between
the two mics, ensuring both are
heard. Yamaha Commercial Audio’s
Tree Tordoff said: “It not only
makes life easier for the sound
engineer, but also makes it much
more natural for those speaking.
They can talk as if they are having a
normal conversation.”
“Being an old school live engineer
with 30 years experience, I was
sceptical about auto mixers,” said
Engineer Jeremy Farnell. “But I’ve
been delighted with the way the
MY16-Dugan performs. The card
increases the intelligibility of the
panel and reduces overall colouration
of the broadcast sound.”
Calrec Goes Into Russia
Calrec has announced its first sale
in Russia. Television Technical
Centre Ostankino purchased two
Artemis Beam consoles for NTV-
PLUS, a Russian subscriber satellite
service. The 48-fader desks were
installed in the Moscow Television
Technical Centre and were used
by NTV-PLUS for the Wimbledon
tennis tournament in London
this year. The consoles have been
networked together using Calrec’s
Hydra2 system, allowing either
console to access any I/O on the
network. Calrec designed a panel
that sits in the control surface and
houses a Colin Broad SR4 serial
remote/synchroniser, which allows
operators to control multiple
playback/record machines from
the Artemis desk. “We believe this
choice offers the best answer for live sports productions and studio shows,” said
Oleg Kolesnikov, CTO at NTV-PLUS.”
Kodiak Mobile
Television is
installing a Calrec
Omega console in
the first of its OB
trucks, a midsized
unit serving clients that do not require full-size OB trucks. “Before we
started construction, we talked to existing and potential customers about what
they’d like to see in an OB truck,” said Co-owner David Kearnes. “The single most
requested piece of equipment was a Calrec console, so when it came to audio, the
choice was clear. “The Omega’s multi-channel I/O capability means we can send
dozens of different mixes that can be isolated for separate live feeds, or recorded
and sent to postproduction. The ability to create so many mixes from a single
console makes the Omega a really powerful system.”
