Despite these alarming numbers, it was important to understand that many of these health problems<br />
were preventable. WHO was there<strong>for</strong>e working <strong>on</strong> promoting physical activity and had recently signed<br />
a MOU with the IOC to strengthen this approach. Another important opportunity was provided by<br />
the <strong>for</strong>thcoming September Special Sessi<strong>on</strong> of the UN General Assembly in New York, which would<br />
discuss preventi<strong>on</strong> of NCDs and the promoti<strong>on</strong> of healthy lifestyles. He c<strong>on</strong>cluded by expressing<br />
the hope that the outcomes of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Forum</str<strong>on</strong>g> would help to address the challenges and opportunities<br />
<strong>for</strong> greater inter-sectoral collaborati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

In her capacity as UN Messenger <strong>for</strong> <strong>Peace</strong> as well as IOC member, HRH Princess Haya Al Hussein<br />
is in a unique positi<strong>on</strong> to help the United Nati<strong>on</strong>s to deliver the MDGs. She str<strong>on</strong>gly believes that<br />
sport can be a useful tool in this regard. The Olympic Movement is in a unique positi<strong>on</strong> to promote<br />
these universal goals, to get people involved, and with the milli<strong>on</strong>s of viewers and sports audiences,<br />
to be a great advocacy mechanism.<br />
Although time is running out to reach these goals by 2015 and the UN is facing many emergency and crisis<br />
situati<strong>on</strong>s, she is deeply c<strong>on</strong>vinced that the world has all the necessary technical means to achieve them.<br />
Questi<strong>on</strong>s & Answers<br />
The discussi<strong>on</strong>s of the panel raised many reacti<strong>on</strong>s am<strong>on</strong>g the audience particularly from stakeholders<br />
based in the field. Am<strong>on</strong>g the various comments and c<strong>on</strong>cerns, it was stressed that it is imperative to<br />
build partnerships and interfaces between different actors <strong>for</strong> peace and sport to optimise their acti<strong>on</strong>.<br />
The audience also stressed the importance of addressing issues of citizens’ security, hooliganism,<br />
drug and violence preventi<strong>on</strong> <strong>for</strong> kids and the need to encourage the UN and the IOC to jointly further<br />
promote physical activity and sport in school curricula. Building coaliti<strong>on</strong>s was evidence of value.<br />
Partnerships between the UN, the IOC and governments are also critical to ensure the sustainability<br />
of projects, bey<strong>on</strong>d financial c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s. South-South cooperati<strong>on</strong> could also be an answer to<br />
that. Social networking could also be further leveraged as a medium to educate youngsters about<br />
healthy and resp<strong>on</strong>sible lifestyles as the interest of technology was underlined.<br />
The role of the academic world was also menti<strong>on</strong>ed. The answer from the panel was that any<br />
evidence needs to have academic rigour reports.<br />
