Recommendati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

The <str<strong>on</strong>g>2nd</str<strong>on</strong>g> internati<strong>on</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>Forum</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> sport <strong>for</strong> <strong>Peace</strong> and Development was held at the United Nati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

office in Geneva <strong>on</strong> 10 and 11 May 2011. It was opened by the President of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Internati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g> Olympic<br />

Committee, Dr Jacques Rogge; the President of the Republic of Hungary, HE Mr Pál Schmitt; and<br />

the Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General <strong>on</strong> <strong>Sport</strong> <strong>for</strong> Development and <strong>Peace</strong>, Mr Wilfried<br />

Lemke.<br />

The UN Secretary General, HE Mr Ban Ki-mo<strong>on</strong>, addressed the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Forum</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Forum</str<strong>on</strong>g> was attended by representatives of UN Member States, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Internati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Sport</strong>s Federati<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

Nati<strong>on</strong>al Olympic Committees, the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Internati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g> Paralympic Committee, Organising Committees<br />

<strong>for</strong> the Olympic Games, United Nati<strong>on</strong>s specialised agencies and programmes, inter- and n<strong>on</strong>governmental<br />

organisati<strong>on</strong>s and educati<strong>on</strong>al instituti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

After two days of deliberati<strong>on</strong>s, the participants extended their appreciati<strong>on</strong> to the IOC and the<br />

UN <strong>for</strong> organising the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Forum</str<strong>on</strong>g>, which enabled them to exchange views <strong>on</strong> promoting sustainable<br />

development and peace through sport. In the c<strong>on</strong>text of the importance of this <str<strong>on</strong>g>Forum</str<strong>on</strong>g>, the participants<br />

agreed <strong>on</strong> the following recommendati<strong>on</strong>s:<br />

The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Forum</str<strong>on</strong>g>,<br />

Reaffirming the importance of sport as a meaningful tool <strong>for</strong> community development, peacekeeping<br />

and rec<strong>on</strong>ciliati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

Recalling the 2010 Millennium Summit Declarati<strong>on</strong>, which recognises that sport, as a tool<br />

<strong>for</strong> educati<strong>on</strong>, development and peace, can promote cooperati<strong>on</strong> and solidarity, tolerance,<br />

understanding, social inclusi<strong>on</strong> and health, at local, nati<strong>on</strong>al and internati<strong>on</strong>al levels,<br />

Reaffirming that the Olympic Movement and the United Nati<strong>on</strong>s share the goal to strive <strong>for</strong> the<br />

harm<strong>on</strong>ious and peaceful development of society,<br />

Noting with satisfacti<strong>on</strong> the increasing number of joint endeavours of the sports movement and<br />

the United Nati<strong>on</strong>s system in the field of community development, educati<strong>on</strong>, health promoti<strong>on</strong><br />

and HIV&AIDS preventi<strong>on</strong>, gender equality, envir<strong>on</strong>ment and sustainability, humanitarian assistance,<br />

youth empowerment, as well as social integrati<strong>on</strong> of pers<strong>on</strong>s with disabilities, and thereby directly<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tributing to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals,<br />

Recognising also the increasing impact of physical inactivity <strong>on</strong> n<strong>on</strong>-communicable diseases, both<br />

in developing and developed countries, and in particular am<strong>on</strong>g young people,<br />

Taking into account that volunteerism is a vital comp<strong>on</strong>ent of sport and mobilises people, including<br />

athletes, to serve their communities <strong>for</strong> development and peace,<br />

Recalling the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Internati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g> Year of Youth and welcoming the celebrati<strong>on</strong> of the Youth Olympic<br />

Games and their important c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> to educating the young generati<strong>on</strong> through sport to a culture<br />

of peace, based <strong>on</strong> the principles of respect, understanding and solidarity,<br />
