Will-Fit Filters are
Often Won’t Fits!
In our field service investigations, we often find damaged engines or air cleaner housing failures caused
by the use of a will-fit filter. Why? Because many are improperly designed – and should actually be called
won’t-fits.
Most of these will-fit filters were developed by reverse engineering, disassembling and measuring the
parts of an original equipment filter. The first fit, a Donaldson filter is designed in conjunction with the
Donaldson air cleaner housing – thus ensuring the proper fit and function of the whole assembly.
Some of the problems we’ve seen in the field from inferior filters include:
Insufficient support caused by a thinner
molded rubber boot gasket on a will-fit
can cause the filter retaining yoke in the air
cleaner housing to fail from excess
vibration.
A will-fit with improperly sized wing nut
holes in the endcaps can allow leaks
around the gasket washer or cause the
wing nut to back off during operation.
Inferiorities in critical seal gasket height,
shape, position and durometer can prevent
a proper seal and allow dirt to pass to the
engine.
Filters with slightly different dimensions
can cause the filters to be improperly
positioned in the air cleaner housing.
We have seen imitations of our RadialSeal
sealing technology. These imitations fail to
meet the basic design specifications and
performance standards for reliable engine
protection. Donaldson radial seal filters are
protected by patents, trademarks and design
registrations, both issued and pending.
The design and material in the critical seal of
will-fit radial seal filters allows dust to pass
and makes filter service difficult. One will-fit
manufacturer recommends the use of grease
to make installation and removal easier.
Grease should never be used in these air
cleaners.
The use of a harder endcap material in willfit
radial seal imitations causes excessive
pressure to the air cleaner housing, that can
cause damage to the service cover and
latches.
Another will-fit radial seal design has a inner
filter liner that is not embedded into the
urethane end caps. This “short inner liner”
design compromises the structural integrity
of the filter and its critical seal.
