Will-Fit Filters are<br />

Often Won’t Fits!<br />

In our field service investigations, we often find damaged engines or air cleaner housing failures caused<br />

by the use of a will-fit filter. Why? Because many are improperly designed – <strong>and</strong> should actually be called<br />

won’t-fits.<br />

Most of these will-fit filters were developed by reverse engineering, disassembling <strong>and</strong> measuring the<br />

parts of an original equipment filter. The first fit, a Donaldson filter is designed in conjunction with the<br />

Donaldson air cleaner housing – thus ensuring the proper fit <strong>and</strong> function of the whole assembly.<br />

Some of the problems we’ve seen in the field from inferior filters include:<br />

Insufficient support caused by a thinner<br />

molded rubber boot gasket on a will-fit<br />

can cause the filter retaining yoke in the air<br />

cleaner housing to fail from excess<br />

vibration.<br />

A will-fit with improperly sized wing nut<br />

holes in the endcaps can allow leaks<br />

around the gasket washer or cause the<br />

wing nut to back off during operation.<br />

Inferiorities in critical seal gasket height,<br />

shape, position <strong>and</strong> durometer can prevent<br />

a proper seal <strong>and</strong> allow dirt to pass to the<br />

engine.<br />

Filters with slightly different dimensions<br />

can cause the filters to be improperly<br />

positioned in the air cleaner housing.<br />

We have seen imitations of our RadialSeal<br />

sealing technology. These imitations fail to<br />

meet the basic design specifications <strong>and</strong><br />

performance st<strong>and</strong>ards for reliable engine<br />

protection. Donaldson radial seal filters are<br />

protected by patents, trademarks <strong>and</strong> design<br />

registrations, both issued <strong>and</strong> pending.<br />

The design <strong>and</strong> material in the critical seal of<br />

will-fit radial seal filters allows dust to pass<br />

<strong>and</strong> makes filter service difficult. One will-fit<br />

manufacturer recommends the use of grease<br />

to make installation <strong>and</strong> removal easier.<br />

Grease should never be used in these air<br />

cleaners.<br />

The use of a harder endcap material in willfit<br />

radial seal imitations causes excessive<br />

pressure to the air cleaner housing, that can<br />

cause damage to the service cover <strong>and</strong><br />

latches.<br />

Another will-fit radial seal design has a inner<br />

filter liner that is not embedded into the<br />

urethane end caps. This “short inner liner”<br />

design compromises the structural integrity<br />

of the filter <strong>and</strong> its critical seal.<br />
