Software for
Language
and Literacy

Language is the Foundation for Reading Success.
Recently, the Common Core State Standards emphasized the
importance of oral language in learning to read and write.
“Oral language development precedes and is the foundation for written
language development...listening and speaking vocabulary and even
mastery of syntax set boundaries as to what children can read and
understand no matter how well they can decode.”
(Common Core State Standards Initiative, June, 2010)
The Importance of Syntax
Laureate o ers a variety of research-based software programs designed to help
students with language impairments and English language learners master syntax
and become better communicators and readers. Our syntax programs train the basic
sentence forms and structures necessary for the development of communication
competence and reading comprehension.
Simple Sentence Structure teaches the importance of Subject-
Verb-Object word order in simple sentences. See page 23
LanguageLinks® is a comprehensive, six-level syntax assessment
and intervention system that helps students master 75 essential
grammatical forms. See page 24
Prepositions! trains 10 important prepositions that improve
students’ ability to follow simple directions necessary for school
success. See page 27
Pronoun Perspective provides intensive practice on 1st and 2nd
person pronouns from a 3rd person perspective to increase comprehension
of speaker/listener relationships. See page 28
QuestionQuest® is a three-level series that helps students understand,
answer, and ask common forms of questions (Who, What,
Where, Why, How, With What, Yes/No). See page 29
How to Use
the Checklist
Begin by answering the questions
on the Language Stage
Checklist. A “Yes” answer means
that a student has moved into the
next stage. A “No” answer means
you should consider software at
Even if the characteristics described
in the stage do not seem to match
your student’s competencies, that
stage is appropriate if your student
exhibits all the characteristics in the
previous stage.
Once you’ve determined a student’s
Language Functioning Stage,
you can select individual programs
from the Recommended Software
list or purchase a Stage Package
to receive multiple programs at a
discount.
improved 150%. There is something so wonderful about
seeing his face as he gets the answers correct and the
computer tells him, “That’s right!” or “Good job!” He is
so proud of himself. James is 4 1 /2 and is autistic with
very limited communication skills. Until recently, he
signed and used very few words, but since using the
programs he talks all day long and has come out of
his shell in ways we never could have imagined. These
programs truly change the lives of the people who use
them. Many thanks from our entire family.
Sincerely,
Cindy Boehm
The Sentence Master
Looking for a Reading
Program for Students
with ASD?
The Sentence Master is a systematic
non-phonics based reading intervention
program that directly
addresses the problems
faced by students
with ASD, including
those with hyperlexia.
It emphasizes the overlearning
of non-content
words (such as “the,”
“is,” “and,” etc.) and word endings (such as “-s,” “-ed,” and
“-ing”). These non-content words represent over 50% of
any page of text and are major determiners of meaning.
In addition to providing direct instruction on the words
and forms, each level of The Sentence Master uses stories
that are tightly controlled
for syntax. Each level builds
upon the next, assisting in
the development of comprehension
skills.
A Professional’s Perspective…
“We have used The Sentence Master
at our center with close to 100 chil-
dren and adults adults with Autism over
the past several years. It is by far my
favorite program to use with clients
with ASD and has proven to be
extremely successful. The repetitive
Valerie Herskowitz
format and visual stimuli approach M.A. (CCC-SLP)
is the appropriate design for these owns Di men sions
individuals. In addition, the manner Therapy Center in
Florida. She has a son
in which the prompts both increase
with autism.
and decrease as needed meets
the task orientation that is so successful with this population.
I highly recommend The Sentence Master for both
children and adults that are within the Autism Spectrum.”
Early Vocabulary
First Words , First Words II, and First
These research-based* programs help children
and adults with special needs master essential
early vocabulary. They o er the consistent,
focused, and supportive environment that
many people with disabilities require to learn
an initial vocabulary.
These programs:
• Build a core vocabulary of 100 nouns and 50 verbs
• Off er highly-structured, individualized training
• Include 200 photos, 200 illustrations, and 150
verb animations
Suggested for Individuals (Pre-K through Adult) with:
• Autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, languagelearning
disorders, physical disabilities, low vision, and hearing
impairments
Product Description:
First Words, First Words II, and First Verbs provide
highly-structured training of early developing nouns and
verbs. Each program trains 50 words in developmental
order, focusing on only fi ve words at a time. Words are
presented in isolation or with one other picture on the
screen. You can choose to work on a black or full-scene
background.
Easy-to-use and e ective.
Using Laureate's Optimized Intervention® technology,
the programs begin with an assessment test to identify
5 words the student doesn't already know. Students
are then presented with two pictures and asked to
identify one of them (e.g. “Find the cow.”) The program
monitors each student response and then automatically
adjusts the training level of each word. At the lower levels
of training, the Blob reinforces correct answers with his
amusing antics.
*Development of these programs was supported by SBIR grants from NIDCD and NICHD.
Enriched Language Facilitates Learning!
At the higher levels of training, a new character
named Zot uses expanded language. Research has
shown that this enhances vocabulary acquisition.
“I like to dance.”
“I am dancing
with my cat.”
“I will dance
with my cat.”
“I danced with
my cat."
Automatic record-keeping
Each time a word is mastered, a new word enters
into training. At the end of each lesson, a summary of
the student’s performance can be reviewed, allowing
you to quickly assess your student’s progress and ensure
accountability.
Each noun can be trained using two
illustrations or two photographs.

Early Categorization
Beginning training in categorization
First Categories
First Categories uses 60 nouns in 6 categories to train categorization
skills. Innovative activities, hundreds of drawings and photographs,
and exciting 3-D animation make this program fun and e ective.
This program:
• Trains 6 early categories using 60 nouns
• Expands understanding of word meaning
• Includes 120 illustrations and 120 photos
Suggested for individuals (Pre-K
through Adult) with:
• Autism, intellectual and developmental
disabilities, language-learning disorders,
low vision, physical impairments, TBI, and
aphasia
First Categories uses 60 common
nouns to train 6 essential early categories:
animals, food, body parts,
clothing, furniture, and vehicles. For
learners who are motivated by visual
stimulation, we o er full-screen
scenes and 3-D blocks. For those who
are easily distracted, a simple black
background can be used.
Optimized Intervention ® O ers
Improved Training!
Using our Optimized Intervention
technology, First Categories begins
with an assessment to determine
which categories a student doesn’t
already know. During training, a
student is asked to identify the
item that belongs to a particular
category (“Which one is an animal?”)
The program continually monitors a
student’s performance and then
tailors instructional delivery to his or
her unique needs.
Flexibility and control
You decide to train using two or
three choices and whether to use
illustrations or photographs. Four
examples of each item aid in generalizing
the concept.
At the end of each lesson, a summary
of the student’s performance
can be reviewed, allowing you to
quickly assess your student’s progress
and ensure accountability.
Syntax
An essential step in language development
Simple Sentence Structure
Are you working with children who have a core vocabulary
of nouns and verbs but are having di culty conveying
mean ing? This program helps chil dren understand the
importance of Subject-Verb-Object word order.
This program:
• Trains Subject-Verb-Object
word order
• Bridges the gap between the
one- and two-word stage
• Improves language
comprehension
Suggested for students (Pre-K-8) with:
• Autism, intellectual and developmental
disabilities, language-learning disorders,
low vision, and hearing impairments
• Also English language learners (Pre-K-6)
Product Description:
Many children with lan guage
impairments have per sis tent prob -
lems with word order processing
and pro duc tion. This pioneering
language in ter ven tion program
helps them learn the importance of
Subject-Verb-Ob ject word order in
sen tenc es.
Here’s how it works...
Using Laureate’s Optimized
Intervention® technology, Simple
Sentence Structure begins with an
assessment test to determine where
to begin training. Then the program
automatically guides the student
through the appropriate curriculum.
Simple Sentence Structure highlights
the roles of subjects, objects,
and verbs in sentences. Students
move through four sentence sets:
contrasting subjects, contrasting objects,
contrasting verbs, and subject/
object reversal.
During training, the student is
presented with two pictures and
asked to identify one of them (e.g.
“Find…‘The boy is splashing the
girl.’”) The program monitors each
student response and then adjusts
the training level accordingly. At the
end of each lesson, a summary of
the student’s performance can be
reviewed, allowing you to quickly
assess your student’s progress and
ensure accountability.
Who will bene t
and production.
• Children with specific lan guage
impairments who are already
speak ing in short sen tenc es, but
make errors in comprehending and
pro duc ing Subject-Verb-Ob ject
word or der.
• Children with sig nifi cant lan guage
delays who are in the late one-word
stage of de vel op ment. At this point,
they have a core vo cab u lary of over
100 words but have not yet begun
to combine words. Simple Sen tence
Improving DHH
Students’ Grammar Through
an Individualized
Software Program
Cannon, J.E., Easterbrooks, S. R.,
Gagné, P., & Beal-Alvarez, J.
Language defi cits are usually
associated with impaired reading
comprehension. This research1
examined whether
LanguageLinks would improve
expressive syntax as well as
reading comprehension.
Twenty-six children aged 5-12
who were Deaf or Hard of
Hearing and used American
Sign Language worked with
LanguageLinks every school day
for nine weeks. The results:
• Students signifi cantly improved
their reading comprehension
as measured by the CWG2 ,
which tests the ability to comprehend
15 grammatical structures
using a task that involves
matching pictures to written
sentences.
• Students’ acquisition of morphosyntax
as measured by the
DELV3 was greatly accelerated
as a consequence of regular
use of the software.
The results indicated that
LanguageLinks signi cantly improved
both reading comprehension
and expressive syntax.
Optimized Intervention
Software Bene ts Grammar
Skills in Young Oral
Deaf Children*
Merchant, G., de Villiers, J., & Smith, S.
Ten oral deaf children were pretested
for expressive vocabulary4
and syntax. 5 Half the children
worked on LanguageLinks
while the others worked on
vocabulary training software.
After 10 weeks the children were
retested and then switched programs.
After 20 weeks they were
post-tested. The results:
• Expressive syntax scores increased
signi cantly after children had
been using LanguageLinks, but
not after using the vocabulary
software.
• Signifi cant gains in expressive
vocabulary were measured
in both groups but were not
related to which program was
being used.
Prepositions!
Learning prepositions is an essential step in language
mastery. In addition to training 10 important prepositions,
this all-new program will help your students follow simple
directions that are necessary for school success.
This program:
• Trains 10 essential prepositions in a variety of
contexts
• Increases ability to follow directions
• Helps ensure school success
Suggested for students (Pre-K-8) with:
• Autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, languagelearning
disorders, low vision, hearing impairments, and cochlear
implants
• Also English language learners (Pre-K-6)
Product Description:
This new Sterling Edition uses proven strategies to
help children master essential prepositions. Six modules
cover ten important prepositions in developmental order.
Captivating three-dimensional characters and objects
not only illustrate the prepositions being trained but
also keep students focused and engaged in the learning
process.
Individualized Instruction!
Using Laureate’s Optimized Intervention® technology,
the program begins with an assessment to determine a
student’s knowledge of prepositions. During training,
the student is asked to select the correct picture from
two or three choices (“Find… The apple is on the box.”).
As the student works, the software continually monitors
his or her responses and adjusts the instructional support
accordingly.
Intensive practice on 1st and 2nd person
Pronoun Perspective:
1st and 2nd Person
This all-new program is designed for students who
struggle with 1st and 2nd person pronouns. These
de cits impact both oral and written performance.
This program:
• Trains 1st and 2nd person pronouns
• Develops 3rd person perspective
• Improves social communication knowledge
Suggested for students (Pre-K-8) with:
• Autism, intellectual and developmental disorders, languagelearning
disorders, low vision, hearing impairments, and cochlear
implants
• Also English language learners (Pre-K-6)
Product Description:
Many children with language impairments, and particularly
those with ASD, have diffi culty understanding
the 1st and 2nd person speaker/listener relationship. This
leads to problems reporting on and reading narrative
texts that require understanding of “Who said what to
whom.” In terms of 1st and 2nd person pronoun reference,
students must understand that when the speaker
refers to her/himself, s/he uses 1st person pronouns and
when s/he refers to the listener, 2nd person pronouns
are used.
This program provides practice comprehending 1st
and 2nd person pronouns from a narrative perspective
where the user is an observer. This approach diff ers from
and complements the approach used for teaching 1st
and 2nd person pronouns in Laureate’s LanguageLinks®. In
those programs there is just one character on the screen
and the student is always the second person.
Sample command: Who says...”I have a ball.”
How it works...
Using Laureate’s Optimized Intervention® technology,
the program begins with an assessment to determine
where to begin training. As the student works, the
software continually monitors his or her responses and
uses this information to provide highly individualized
language intervention. When the student masters both
forms in a Module, the program automatically moves to
the next Module.
Pronoun Perspective features extensive data collection
to document student performance and ensure
accountability.
Comprehensive reports are automatically generated
at the end of each session allowing speech-language
pathologists and special educators to quickly and easily
review a student’s progress over time.
Sample command: Who says... “Your bike is shiny.”
program systematically trains both strument answer “…with a bat” while
syntactic and semantic aspects of “How is the girl dancing?” requires
diff erent types of questions.
a manner response “…on her toes.”
A Variety of Question Forms
Students who are learning to
understand and respond to questions
need to master many syntactic
subtleties. For example, they need
to know whether a question refers
to the subject or the object of a
sentence (Who is painting?/Who is
the father painting?). They also need
to discriminate between Yes/No- and
Wh-Questions.
In addition, students must understand
the various semantic meanings
of questions. For example, the
Similarly, the question “Why is the girl
sad?” requires a cause response “…
because her balloon got away,” while
the question “Why is the boy lling the
washtub?” requires a purpose answer
like “…to wash the dog.”
Students must also learn that
when more than one person is
involved in an activity, a question
such as “Who is washing the car?” requires
an exhaustive response where
all of the participants are named.
Similarly, when a scene is described
as “Everyone is reading something
and eating something,” the response
to “Who is reading what and eating
Teachers pre-tested 14 oral deaf children
with language delays using a 15 item
Wh-Question elicited production test. 1 The
children then used QuestionQuest for 30
minutes per day, usually 3 times a week.
• At post-test, scores on the Wh-Question
elicited production test more than doubled;
a diff erence that was highly signifi cant.
• Improvements were evident across a range of initial ability. Some children who
did not produce Wh-Questions on the pre-test did so after training. Others with
initially limited production of Wh-Questions expanded their repertoire.
These results indicate that using QuestionQuest was an eff ective way to provide
children with the critical language input they needed to improve their abilities to
understand, ask, and answer questions.
Auditory Discrimination and Processing
100 nouns and the sounds they make!
Nouns & Sounds
Here’s a fun, e ective way to increase auditory aware ness
and build critical listening skills. In di vid u als of all
ages will en joy exploring nouns, matching them with
pho to graphs, iden ti fy ing sounds, and playing games that
exercise auditory and visual short-term memory.
This program:
• Trains discrimination of 100 environmental sounds
• Builds auditory awareness and listening skills
• Exercises short-term memory
Suggested for individuals (Pre-K through Adult) with:
• Autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, languagelearning
disorders, low vision, hearing impairments, cochlear
implants, TBI, and aphasia
Product Description:
Nouns & Sounds is an engaging program that
encourages individuals to match common environmental
sounds with 100 realistic photographs. Of the 100 nouns
used in the program, half are acquired by typically
developing children by 2 1 /2 years of age while the
remainder are acquired later.
Optimized Intervention® o ers improved training
Using our Optimized Intervention technology, Nouns
& Sounds begins with an assessment to determine which
sounds a student can’t identify. During training, the student
is asked to match a sound to a photograph (“Find
the one that makes this sound… ‘meow’.”). The program
continually tracks a student’s performance and uses this
information to guide the learning process.
Flexibility and control
You decide whether to train using two or three
choices, whether to have visual reinforcement on or o ,
and whether to include text. At the end of each session,
a performance summary is presented, allowing you to
quickly review progress and ensure accountability.
Sample command: “Which one makes this sound… ‘quack, quack’.”
Nine Instructional Activities
Optimized Intervention®
This activity automatically assesses a student’s knowledge
of common nouns and their sounds and then delivers highly
individualized training. Based on a student’s responses, the
program moves among three training levels, each with a
di erent amount of instructional support.
Training by Level
Students are asked to match sounds with photographs. You
can choose any one of the three training levels to accommodate
individuals who need a xed level of support.
Testing
This activity can be used to document pre- or post-training
performance.
Three Additional Instructional Activities
• Is this the Right Sound? asks students to decide whether a
sound matches or does not match a picture.
• Identifying Noun Sounds asks students to listen to a sound
and identify the correct picture from 6, 8, or 12 choices.
• Remember that Sound presents a sound and, after a short
delay, asks the student to identify the correct picture from
two or three choices.
Three Supplemental Activities
• Introducing Nouns and Sounds is a single switch activity that
presents one noun and its sound at a time.
• Exploring Noun Sounds lets users explore di erent sounds
from an array of 6, 8, or 12 picture choices.
• Concentrate on Noun Sounds asks students to nd two
identical pictures from an array of 6, 8, or 12 cards that
appear face down.
Reading and Spelling
The Sentence Master… A Program
When Phonics Fails The Sentence Master
Do you have students who are failing to
learn to read? Stu dents for whom a phonics
approach has not worked? The Sen tence Mas ter
ensures success for stu dents who are at risk of
read ing failure due to difficulties in phon ics
and oral language. It’s also effective with
English language learners and students with
impulsive learn ing styles.
Suggested for students (K-12) with:
• Autism, intellectual and developmental
disabilities, language-learning disorders,
hearing impairments, and AAC users
• Also appropriate for adults with
developmental disabilities
• Also English language learners (K-6)
What exactly is The
Sentence Master?
It is a revolutionary remedial
reading program developed by Dr.
Marion Blank. The Sentence Master is
designed for students who haven’t
responded to a phonics-based
approach.
The Sentence Master ensures
success by providing:
• Mastery of non-content words
The program focuses on noncontent
words, such as “the,” “is,”
“and,” etc. While limited in number,
these words make up the majority
of any page of text.
• Failure-free learning
All of the word activities and stories
are designed so that students never
have to read or write a word that has
not been fully mastered.
• An emphasis on accurate spelling
This enables students to easily discriminate
small diff erences in words
(e.g. bus/but, top/too) and to eff ectively
write every word they learn.
• Carefully-controlled sentences
Unlike other reading programs, the
stories use tightly controlled syntax
which facilitates the development of
comprehension skills.
These programs:
• Increase reading
comprehension
• Teach critical reading skills
• Foster independent reading
What makes The
Sentence Master
so e ective?
First, students learn to read
and write one word per day.
Students spend 15-30 minutes
completing a series of computer
and writing activities that teach one
word a day. Many of the activities
incorporate words already learned
so that there is steady practice and
review.
Students then read
complete stories.
After learning a set of 3 to 15
words, students see and read an
animated story on the computer and
then read the same story on paper.
You’ll see significant improvement
in reading and also
the sense of accomplishment and
growth in self-esteem that comes
with success.
“ The Sentence Master
is designed so a child
cannot fail.”
Here’s how the
The Word Activities
Word Activities train
new words that will later
appear in stories.
Four diff er ent computer activities teach
one word per day. An encouraging voice
provides guid ance and informational
feed back, while optional amusing
an i mat ed char ac ters reward cor rect
answers and keep students engaged.
Word Recognition
Here, the student selects the word
that match es the example at the top
of the screen.
Sequential Recognition
In this activity, students select all instanc
es of a particular word in the order
they would nor mal ly read them.
Spelling
In a series of spelling ac tiv i ties that do
not require letter nam ing, a student:
• completes words by fi nd ing the missing
letters on the screen
• chooses letters from the screen to spell an
entire word
• types in the entire word
Sentence Completion
Here, the student fi nds the miss ing
word to complete a sen tence.
The Writing Activities
With these activities, a stu dent writes,
by hand or on the com put er, the word
just learned as well as whole sentences
con tain ing the new word and words
that have al ready been taught.

for Success in Reading
Succeeds... We Guarantee It!
program works
The Book Activities
Stories on the computer
foster independent
reading.
After learning a set of words, the student
is introduced to an an i mat ed sto ry
that con tains only mastered words. The
use of tightly controlled syntax and
increasingly complex sentences leads
to enhanced comprehension. First, the
com put er reads the sto ry aloud and
then the stu dent reads it alone. Help
is al ways avail able... at any time, the
stu dent can have a word or the entire
page read aloud by the com put er.
Simple on-screen icons can be used
to hear the text read aloud, re peat
the an i ma tion sequence, and move
forward or back ward with in the story.
The Story
Booklet Activities
Printed stories transfer the
reader to print with ease.
After working with the sto ry on the
com put er, a student is introduced to
a print ed version of the same sto ry.
After read ing it, the student completes
sen tenc es by fill ing in the blank
spac es. These ex er cis es are de signed
to strength en both writ ing and compre
hen sion skills.
Four Levels
of Reading Instruction
The Sentence Master is divided
into four lev els. At each level, the
sentence struc tures and sto ries
become pro gres sive ly more complex.
Once your students have
successfully com plet ed Lev el 1, you’ll
want to con tin ue their progress with
Lev els 2, 3, and 4.
Each level of The Sen tence
• 50-75 new words
• 5 corresponding Word Activities
• 8 animated computer sto ries
• 8 Story Booklets with writ ing
