Drying Oils
Drying oils are the vegetable oils
used to make oil colour.
They are used to modify the
consistency and drying time of
colour in much the same way as
prepared mediums. We offer a
range of drying oils to suit your
different needs.
Refined Linseed Oil
An alkali-refined oil of pale colour that reduces
oil colour consistency and increases gloss and
transparency.
75ml 3021748 rrp £4.40 £3.74
250ml 3039748 rrp £8.70 £7.40
500ml 3049748 rrp £15.20 £12.92
1 Ltr Tin 3053748 rrp £27.10 £23.03
Solvents
Solvents are used to dilute
colour, as well as for cleaning
brushes and palettes after a
painting session.
Artists grade solvents leave no
residual matter behind. DIY grade
solvents, are not refined to the
same degree, and will often
leave a tacky painting surface,
and a paint film that won’t fully dry.
Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner
A new addition to the Winsor & Newton range, this
water-miscible solvent removes dried oil, alkyd &
acrylic colour from brushes. Soak in the cleaner
Linseed Stand Oil
A pale viscous oil that slows drying while imparting a
tough, smooth enamel finish with no brush marks.
75ml 3021749 rrp £5.80 £4.93
Cold-Pressed Linseed Oil
Slightly yellow, dries slightly quicker than refined linseed oil.
75ml 3021747 rrp £5.80 £4.93
Thickened Linseed Oil
Behaves like Linseed Stand Oil but dries quicker & darker.
75ml 3021750 rrp £5.80 £4.93
Drying Linseed Oil
Darker than refined Linseed Oil, this oil promotes the
fastest drying rate of all the oils, whilst increasing gloss.
75ml 3021742 rrp £5.80 £4.93
Distilled Turpentine
The only artists’ grade solvent capable of easily
dissolving Dammar resin. Turpentine makes a viscous
mixture, evaporates slowly, is the most hazadous and
strongest smelling solvent commonly used by artists.
75ml 3021744 rrp £4.40 £3.74
250ml 3039744 rrp £7.60 £6.46
500ml 3049744 rrp £13.00 £11.05
1Ltr Tin 3053744 rrp £23.90 £20.32
Sansodor (Low odour paint thinner)
Sansodor makes a viscous mixture, evaporates slowly,
is the least hazardous, costs approximately the same
as turpentine, does not deteriorate on storage and
has minimal odour. This is well suited to artists who
prefer to avoid exposure to turpentine.
overnight & scrub if necessary. Cleanable with water. 75ml 3021757 rrp £4.40 £3.74
75ml 3021740 rrp £2.75 £2.33
250ml 3039740 rrp £5.25 £4.46 NEW
500ml 3049740 rrp £9.50 £8.07
Artists’ Picture Cleaner
Not strictly a solvent, it works by dissolving linseed
oil oxidation and will remove surface dirt and the
products of oxidation in the old varnish. It contains
an emulsified mixture of Copaiba balsam, dipentene
and pine oil with ammonia.
75ml 3021735 rrp £5.80 £4.93
250ml 3039735 rrp £10.90 £9.27
Varnishes
Varnishes are final coatings
which protect finished pictures
from the build up of dirt and
grease.
Oil paintings must be thoroughly
dry (at least 6 -12 months) before
varnishing. For fine art usage
picture varnishes should be
removable so that paintings can
be cleaned in the future. Different
resins used in the varnishes impart
varying degrees of gloss.
Artists’ Retouching Varnish
A clear liquid varnish, which dries to a non-yellowing,
glossy film. Gives temporary protection to recently
completed oil paintings.
75ml 3021736 rrp £5.80 £4.93
250ml 3039736 rrp £10.90 £9.27
500ml 3049757 rrp £13.00 £11.05
1Ltr Tin 3053757 rrp £23.90 £20.32
Artists’ White Spirit
A volatile, flammable diluent (thinner) for oil
colours and the cleaning of brushes. Whilst it has a
characteristic odour, this is less pronounced than
Turpentine. This makes a watery mixture, evaporates
quickly, is less hazardous than Distilled Turpentine.
75ml 3021738 rrp £4.40 £3.74
1Ltr Tin 3053738 rrp £7.60 £6.46
