November 10 . . . I made sketches <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old parts <strong>of</strong><br />

Montmartre. It’s unbelievably beautiful—a group <strong>of</strong> school girls,<br />

little ones, comes down this ancient street. Such a mixture —an<br />

old Frenchman pulling a cart —a couple <strong>of</strong> GI’s.<br />

ARTIST’S STATEMENT<br />

Oct. 21 (in Britain awaiting transport to France) . . . I seem<br />

to cause a sensation here—a woman correspondent is a<br />

rarity. We get c<strong>of</strong>fee and a young merchant seaman sits<br />

with us. He is very interesting, talks about <strong>the</strong> conditions<br />

now and <strong>the</strong>n! I am struck by <strong>the</strong> unusual intelligence <strong>of</strong> so<br />

many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men we talk to—and <strong>the</strong>ir interest in what we<br />

are doing. Then finally it is time for <strong>the</strong> pubs to open—we<br />

walk a few blocks and go into a very crowded bar. Every<br />

uniform. Commandos, Scots, everything. We can’t get near<br />

<strong>the</strong> bar. A British seaman taps me on <strong>the</strong> shoulder, asks<br />

me what I am. I say correspondent. He says, “I’m all for<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. They’re doing a wonderful job and lots <strong>of</strong> guts.” He<br />

buys us a drink.<br />
