History of SoutheastHEALTH Foundation: Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation, Inc. was 

organized in 1977 as an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit entity to ensure the future of healthcare 

in our region. The Foundation was operated by a volunteer Board of Directors with a volunteer 

Executive Director. In 1989 with a desire to increase the fund raising activities of the Foundation, 

the Board employed a professional fundraiser to manage the Foundation’s operation. Today, 

the Foundation Board of Directors consists of 31 individuals, volunteers from all segments of our 

service area, providing oversight of fundraising projects, and managing allocation of Foundation 

funds to enhance the excellence of healthcare and meet the region’s healthcare needs.

Once again, the generosity of people 

from within and around our community has 

helped the Foundation support programs 

and services at SoutheastHEALTH. The 

Board of Directors and staff are sincerely 

grateful for your help. 

As you read through this report, you will see 

highlights of this year’s activities and successes. 

You will learn, for instance, that the Foundation 

provided $452,790 of financial support 

to the programs and services of Southeast- 

HEALTH which would not otherwise be 

available to assist individuals and families 

with their healthcare needs. 

Other accomplishments include our sixth 

year of collaboration with Kohl’s Department 

Stores through the Kohl’s Youth Diabetes 

Care Network in partnership with Southeast- 

HEALTH. Programs offered through this 

network address prevention, detection and 

other unique needs of children living with 

diabetes and their families. 

As you will see in the pages to follow, the 

Foundation had a highly successful year. 

Your generosity allows us to continue going 

above and beyond to provide quality healthcare 

and access to vital health and wellness 

programs for our community and throughout 

the region. People are motivated to 

support SoutheastHEALTH for many 

reasons. Some give in gratitude for the care 

they or a loved one received at the Hospital or 

because they have been personally affected by 

a specific disease. Others simply want to 

support SoutheastHEALTH in recognition of 

the excellent care provided to all patients. 

The gifts we receive on behalf of Southeast- 

HEALTH come in many forms and sizes, and 

all of them are important. Even a modest 

contribution, when pooled with other gifts, 

can be tremendously effective. It can help 

purchase a needed piece of equipment, 

provide a service for patients or professional 

development for SoutheastHEALTH staff. 

As you know, 2011 is expected to be a challenging 

year for foundations and not-for-profit 

organizations, and we sincerely appreciate all 

of your efforts. On behalf of the Foundation 

Board of Directors and staff, the physicians 

and employees of SoutheastHEALTH, and, 

most importantly, our patients and their

Carol served as President for two years, 

providing guidance and council for the 

smooth functioning of the Foundation. She 

has also worked golf tournaments in sweltering 

heat and violent rain storms, organized fundraising 

events, made donor calls and so much more. 

Carol says “It is most gratifying to see how the 

Foundation has assisted in helping to grow the 

services of Southeast for our community. Southeast 

has achieved the status as a very valued 

member of our community to provide quality 

healthcare and healthcare services dedicated to 

helping those we serve.” 

Carol also volunteers with many other organizations 

with the same dedication and passion she 

gives to all she does. Based upon her love of the 

arts, Carol served six years on the Board of 

Directors for the Arts Council of Southeast 

Missouri. In 1980, Carol began volunteering 

with the Cape Girardeau County Area Medical 

Society. In 1981, Carol felt a need to lend a hand 

through the Southeast Missouri Hospital Auxiliary, 

and volunteered in the Auxiliary Gift Shop. 

In 1988, Carol and her husband, Dr. Tom 

Sparkman, began volunteering for SEMO 

District Fair as Co-Chairmen of the Grandstand 

volunteers. Carol and Tom were awarded the 

SEMO District Fair Volunteer of the Year in 2003 

for their many years of dedicated service. Carol’s 

church is another area for which she felt a strong 

calling to offer her time and talents. She has 

served on the St. Andrew Lutheran Board of 

Directors since 2004, and as the Director of 

Fellowship. 

Carol’s vision has made a positive impact upon 

our community through her efforts with service 

projects and role modeling. Carol is a self-effacing 

individual whose placid nature and easy going 

manner conceals a passionate heart dedicated to 

helping others. Carol exemplifies the concept that 

we are all responsible for giving back and “paying 

forward” some of the blessings that have been 

bestowed upon us. 

Carol possesses the courage to stand for what she 

believes; the passion to make a difference; the faith 

to see the best in all people; and the knowledge 

and skills to accomplish goals. The truth is…we are 

all a little better from having Carol touch our lives.

O.D. (Dave) Niswonger, former Southeast 

Hospital Administrator, was recognized for 

50 years of service to Southeast during the January 

meeting of the SoutheastHEALTH Foundation 

Board of Directors. Dave was employed at Southeast 

from 1961 through 1990, with 14 of those years 

spent as Southeast’s Administrator. He has continued 

his service to Southeast throughout his 

retirement as a member of the Foundation Board of 

Directors. 

When recalling his past five decades of service, Dave 

notes that there have been many highlights. A great 

source of pride was opening of the Hospital’s Regional 

Cancer Center in 1981. “This was a wonderful 

accomplishment for us—it’s such a great service. I am 

so happy to see how the Cancer Center has evolved 

and expanded to what it is today. The beautiful, new 

Southeast Cancer Center is just fantastic.” 

He also recalls implementation of downstate Missouri’s 

first open heart surgery program in 1984. “At 

first we didn’t realize how many of our departments 

would be involved in this program,” he says. “But every 

department we asked to take on this new 

program pitched in without hesitation. Everyone 

from the Medical Staff to Nursing to Anesthesiology, 

Lab and numerous other departments jumped right 

in to make it happen.” 

Although Dave retired as Hospital Administrator 

more than 20 years ago, he feels as though he never 

really stopped working. “Gardening was always my 

‘Stress Unit,’” he said. “And when I retired as Administrator, 

I had so many things I wanted to 

accomplish with iris hybridizing.”

International Iris Honors 

His work as a hybridizer has earned Dave international 

recognition including two Dykes Medals, 

which, for iris hybridizers, is equivalent to winning 

the Super Bowl. Awarded annually by the American 

Iris Society, this honor has been given to only one 

iris per year since 1927. A specialist with spurea irises, 

Dave has introduced over 250 new iris varieties, 

around 50 new daylilies and over 30 varieties of daffodils. 

He also works with grafting nut trees. 

Despite spending countless hours in his gardens, 

Dave still finds time to be actively involved with 

SoutheastHEALTH Foundation fundraising campaigns 

and serves as Chaplain for the Foundation 

Board of Directors. 

During his 50 years of service, Dave has had a profound 

and lasting influence on the character and 

spirit of Southeast. That spirit is perpetuated 

through the O.D. Niswonger Spirit of Southeast 

Award. The award, which recognizes employees 

who demonstrate the character and spirit that 

Dave displayed throughout his career, was established 

in 1991 as a tribute to him. That spirit, 

along with his deep personal commitment to quality 

patient care and development of facilities, 

services and technology, has greatly enhanced the 

quality of healthcare in our region. Dave Niswonger 

continues to be a goodwill ambassador for 

Southeast and remains passionate in his support 

of SoutheastHEALTH. His legacy will live on at 

Southeast for many more decades to come.

“Amazing Race” Through Kohl’s 

for Diabetes 

Kohl’s is more than a great place to shop. Kohl’s is also a wonderful 

community partner that truly shows “Kohl’s Cares for Kids.” 

Through the sale of Kohl’s Cares® books and plush toy sets, the 

proceeds benefit children’s health and education programs nationwide. 

Since 2006, over $75,000 has been raised by the Cape Girardeau Kohl’s 

toys and books help to support the Kohl’s Youth Diabetes Care Network, 

a service of SoutheastHEALTH Diabetes Center. 

In celebration of the partnership with Southeast, an “Amazing Race” 

was held in November 2010 for Kohl’s shoppers. The event featured 

activities planned by the Certified Diabetes Educators at the Southeast- 

HEALTH Diabetes Center to help individuals learn more about 

diabetes. The culmination of the event was the presentation of a check 

for $20,090 to SoutheastHEALTH Foundation for the Kohl’s Youth 

Diabetes Care Network for 2011.

Annual Share Walk 

On a beautiful fall Saturday in October, over 50 

people from throughout the area gathered at Cape 

County Park for the annual Share “Walk to Remember.” 

Share of Southeast Hospital serves families 

and caregivers by providing free peer counseling, 

information, education and care for families who have 

experienced miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal death. 

Following a memorial service and one-mile walk, a 

balloon release honored families who attended the walk 

and the babies for whom they grieve. 

The continuation and success of the SoutheastHEALTH 

Share program relies solely upon the support of the 

Foundation. Gayle Unverferth and Linda Logan, Share 

program coordinators, say this support enables them to 

provide care, comfort, and other resources to our Share 

families. “We would not be able to sustain this program 

without the Foundation.” 

Barb Enderle Share’s 

Support 

Barb and Kyle Enderle lost their baby girl, 

Kyla Jo Enderle, June 25, 2003. Every 

year since their tragic loss, the Enderles 

present a gift basket to the first girl born at 

Southeast on their daughter’s birthday in 

loving memory of Kyla Jo. Barb explains, “It’s 

a way to celebrate Kyla’s birthday and help 

another parent celebrate the birth of their 

daughter too.” 

Barb is a volunteer with the Southeast Share 

program which offers counseling and 

support to families who have experienced 

the loss of a baby. Barb says, “The Share 

volunteers were such a blessing to us. That’s 

why I became involved. Share provides the 

support to work through the overwhelming 

grief as well as providing burial for the 

babies of those families who cannot afford it. 

Share also gives the family some items that 

provide tangible proof that they indeed had 

a precious baby. This program is so valuable 

for those families. Thank you, Southeast- 

HEALTH Foundation.”

Camp Super Nova 

Lindsy Hitt loves the friends she meets 

at Camp Super Nova. “We get to have 

fun and learn to do new things.” 

Lindsy says with that sweet smile of hers. 

Lindsy has been attending Camp Super 

Nova since it began in 1998. The fun 

activities that Lindsy enjoys also provide 

activity therapy for her and other campers 

who are developmentally disabled. 

Millie Aufdenberg, program coordinator, 

says that the joy of these young people 

involved in Camp Super Nova activities is priceless. “It 

is something you have to see to truly appreciate. This 

time also gives the caregivers a reprieve from their day 

to day responsibilities. Without the support of the 

Foundation, this program would not be able to 

provide the opportunities that the Camp Super Nova 

children are currently offered,” Millie notes. 

George Tucker Quilts for the 

Hospice Cause 

George Tucker of Saxony Village knew he should 

quit smoking but the constant urge of idle 

hands haunted him. He began to think about 

what he could do with his hands to occupy them and 

take his mind and hands off of smoking. 

“I decided to make quilts,” George explains. He 

enjoyed making quilts. George and several other 

quilters at Saxony have made and donated numerous 

quilts to the SoutheastHEALTH Foundation to be 

raffled off to benefit Southeast Hospice. 

George George recently recently decided decided to scale down his personal 

quilting efforts, literally. He began crafting crafting baby 

quilts to be donated to the Foundation. George has 

completed dozens dozens of these adorable baby quilts which 

have been presented to the Southeast Nursery, 

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric patients and 

infants whose mothers are enrolled in our Building 

Blocks program. 

George’s battle to quit smoking has improved his 

health. Just as importantly, his baby quilts have 

brought many smiles to faces of parents and family 

members as well as bringing comfort to dozens of 

new mothers and infants. 

Glenda Cobb was the lucky winner of the handmade 

quilt by the Saxony quilters group to benefit 

Southeast Hospice patients.

Cape Central Students Help with Foundation Alzheimer’s Kits 

Transitional students at Cape Central High School 

lead by Debbie Ebaugh have added a new dimension 

to the Chris’ ARK (Alzheimer’s Resource Kit) 

contents. Soft, colorful Buoy Balls are now included 

with Color Tows, Twiddle Kitty, Learning Curve books, 

Tangle Toys and many other colorful and high texture 

items designed to provide hours of relaxation, focus 

and relief for Alzheimer’s patients. 

Chris’ ARK is a one-of-a-kind resource kit that has 

received rave reviews by Alzheimer’s caregivers and 

medical professionals throughout the nation. The 

Foundation is very grateful to Debbie Ebaugh and her 

students for their contribution to this important 

service. 

The Chris’ ARK program is made possible through 

individual donations and grant funding. In 2010, 

Procter & Gamble donated $5,000 to help support the 

Nursing Camps Cultivate Dreams for High School Students 

Is nursing the career for you? Area high school 

students get a firsthand look at the profession and 

whether it’s a career path they want to pursue 

through the annual Southeast Hospital Nursing Camp. 

Last summer, Southeast Hospital welcomed 38 high 

school teens from as far away as Texas and Georgia. 

Nursing camp participants were offered shadowing 

experiences (Emergency Services, Operating Room, 

OB/Nursery, Radiology), specialized programs (career 

opportunities, professionalism and interview skills and 

educational opportunities (Mid-America Transplant, 

ethics discussion) during the week-long camp. 

Southeast’s “Guys-Only” Healthcare Professionals camp 

provided five area high school young men a similar 

opportunity for experiencing many opportunities of 

the healthcare arena. The young men shadowed in 

Emergency Services, Operating Room, Cardiac Cath 

Lab, Physical Therapy, ICU/CTU and more.

allow participants to learn more about flight nursing. 

Participant evaluations confirmed that both camps were 

highly successful in their goals to introduce healthcare 

career fields to high school youth. 

In this time of a nationwide shortage of nursing and 

other healthcare professionals, SoutheastHEALTH is 

pleased to offer such valuable and memorable experiential 

learning activities. Another good year for camps!

a new era of teaching 

A Greater Inspiration 

by Zach Raines 

Everyone has a great life decision they have to 

answer. One of those is which career do you 

want to pursue. This summer when my mom 

made me go to a three-day nursing camp at 

SoutheastHEALTH, I didn’t really have a desire 

to become a doctor or nurse. I was just a teenager 

enjoying summer and getting ready for high 

school. Careers and the future were not a big 

priority on my mind at the time. However, with all 

the amazing things I saw and learned at this camp, 

I now have a strong desire to go into a healthcare 

profession so I can help people while working at an 

interesting job. 

At 14, and the youngest of the group, I was actually 

worried about getting sick at the sight of surgery. 

Not only did I handle the surgery well, but seeing 

the entire surgery gave me a sense of wonder at 

how the body really works. We watched a surgery 

involving the da Vinci machine, a large surgical 

tool that is controlled by a doctor at an operating 

station. It enables physicians to make very accurate 

incisions, thus making surgery more successful. 

One afternoon, our nurse extern, or nurse in 

training, took us to Emergency Services, and let us 

practice the things you get during a normal 

checkup at a doctor’s office like the eye’s reflex and 

eardrum exam. During another day of camp, we 

explored more of the Hospital. We saw the pharmacy 

where pharmacists make IV fluids and

medicines, the Gastroenterology or GI Lab where 

we watched a colonoscopy, and the ICU or Intensive 

Care Unit. 

Seeing how many parts there are to a hospital, the 

nurse externs and other people in charge of the 

program stressed how important a good team is to 

any career in healthcare. They shared their past 

experiences in the Hospital, telling how a career in 

healthcare can be tough sometimes, but also very 

rewarding. They then taught us CPR or cardiopulmonary 

resuscitation. 

We learned through the nursing camp that a 

medical career is not all the corny dramatizations 

shown on television. The camp is not one of those 

“use your imagination to envision this idea.” We 

were able to see firsthand how doctors work, what 

they do and how everything operates. 

My time at this camp was very 

rewarding considering the fact 

that it started out as something my 

mom made me do. It turned out to 

be a rewarding experience that 

gave me great inspiration for a 

career for life. My mom will 

probably never let me live down 

that fact for a long time since she 

always says she is right.

Anne Limbaugh’s Rolling Legacy 

Meals on Wheels 

When Anne Limbaugh sees a need, she 

tackles it head on. Anne visited her ailing 

aunt in Jefferson City and was impressed 

by the Meals on Wheels program which delivered 

meals to her aunt. Anne returned to Cape 

Girardeau and saw the need was evident for a 

service to assist elderly and disabled people who 

were unable to prepare a hot, nutritious meal for 

themselves. She enlisted the help of her fellow 

Auxiliary members, the late Libby Oliver and Kay 

Newman to initiate Meals on Wheels in Cape. 

Anne began recruiting delivery drivers from her 

church friends at Centenary United Methodist 

Church. She solicited Southeast Hospital’s Food 

and Nutrition Services to plan and prepare the 

meals, and arrange for any special dietary needs 

so that once a day a well-balanced meal would be 

delivered to anyone, regardless of age, who is 

unable to prepare a meal because of: 

• Infirmities of age 

• Visual, physical, mental or other disabilities 

• Recovery from surgery, illness or injuries 

On January 7, 1974, Southeast’s Auxiliary 

launched Meals on Wheels. Seven individuals 

were the first to benefit from this home meal 

delivery program. Today, thousands of Cape 

residents have benefitted thanks to the combined 

efforts of SoutheastHEALTH’s Home Health and 

Dietary Services, 23 area churches and the Cape 

Girardeau County Area Medical Alliance. 

“Meals on Wheels is Southeast’s gift to the 

community that gives homebound individuals 

nutritious meals. The Southeast Auxiliary works 

with church volunteers and the Medical Alliance 

to provide smiling faces to deliver the 

meals and good cheer. I can’t say enough about 

all of their support since the beginning of 

Meals on Wheels, and that also has included 

the Alliance’s financial support.” states Nancy 

Bray, who has voluntarily coordinated the 

program since 1994. 

The Foundation fund in support of Meals on 

Wheels began when Nancy’s mother, Mary Lou 

Bray, passed away and the family requested that 

memorial gifts be directed to the Meals on 

Wheels fund. When Nancy’s father, Paul Bray, 

passed away she again requested that memorial gifts 

be directed to the Meals on Wheels fund. 

Today, the Foundation covers the cost of program 

supplies and underwrites the cost of meals for those 

who are unable to pay for the service. The Foundation 

recently purchased new carriers used for transporting 

the meals.

Scholarship Reception Honors Donors, Recognizes Recipients 

SoutheastHEALTH Foundation and SoutheastHEALTH 

Auxiliary scholarship recipients enjoyed the opportunity to 

personally thank the individuals who are helping them earn a 

healthcare degree at the annual Scholarship Appreciation and 

Recognition Reception. The event celebrated the successes of 67 

students who received over $34,500 in scholarship awards. 

The SoutheastHEALTH Foundation and Auxiliary programs 

continue to grow each year, giving Southeast additional opportunities 

to honor and assist students entering the healthcare field. 

Encouraged by financial support, our scholarship recipients are 

working to transform their dreams into reality; this is made ever 

more possible by the lessening of their financial burdens. The 

generosity of donors and their support of the scholarship program 

not only make a difference to students, but also to our 

communities, as scholars meet their academic goals and take 

their place in the healthcare work force throughout the region.

Mary Ann Lottes Nursing Scholarship 

Mary Lottes was raised on the family farm in 

Illmo-Scott City, Missouri. After Mary Ann 

graduated from Fornfelt High School, she 

remained at home to assist her mother in raising 

her three younger sisters, and to help out on the 

farm. Mary Ann had a strong aspiration to attend 

college and receive a nursing degree. However, due 

to the depression, her family was not financially able 

to manage the expense of a college education. 

Mary Ann and Dennis E. Lottes were married in 

1948. Dennis served in the Marine Corps in World 

War II and the Korean conflict. In the line of duty 

in Korea, Dennis lost his left foot from a grenade 

explosion. Mary Ann joined him at a hospital in 

California to care for him until he was stable 

enough to return home to Scott City. 

Before his death in 1985, Dennis suffered from 

congestive heart failure and lung cancer. Mary Ann 

cared for him while working full time and raising 

four daughters. She worked hard to ensure that all 

four of her daughters could do what she could 

not—receive a college degree. 

Mary Ann’s dream of receiving a nursing degree 

may not have been realized, but she was a nurse at 

heart. Her compassion for 

her husband and the 

caring for her elderly 

in-laws until they passed, 

demonstrated what nursing 

truly represents. 

Compassion, caring and 

spiritual guidance are what 

Mary Ann portrayed every 

day to her family and 

friends. She was their advocate when it was time to 

make critical health decisions, and she was there to 

hold their hands as they passed away. 

Upon her death on Januray 26, 2010, the family of 

Mary Ann Lottes created this scholarship in memory 

of their mother. Their intention is to assist a 

nursing student who portrays the qualities of 

compassion, caring, advocacy and spiritual guidance—someone 

who can make a difference in the 

lives of patients and families as their mother did. 

The Mary Ann Lottes Nursing Scholarship is an 

annual scholarship to be used to assist individuals 

enrolled in the SoutheastHEALTH College of 

Nursing & Health Sciences in the nursing program. 

Tom Welch Radiography Scholarship 

The Thomas Welch Radiography Scholarship was 

established by the friends of Tom at Southeast- 

HEALTH in recognition of Tom’s contributions 

in the field of Radiology. Tom retired in 2010 after 

nearly 36 years as Southeast’s Director of Radiology. 

Tom’s journey at Southeast began in July of 1974. 

Since then, he has overseen major improvements in 

the Hospital’s Radiology Department. “It has been 

an evolutionary process,” Tom says. “Healthcare has 

changed drastically since 1974.” 

The Radiology Department has expanded from 

about 5,000 square feet to its current space of 

25,000 square feet. When he joined the staff about 

10,000 Radiology exams were performed annually. 

Today, that figure is more than 100,000. During 

Tom’s tenure he saw the introduction of Ultrasound, 

CAT scan and MRI as well as an expanded 

Nuclear Medicine Department with state-of-the-art 

equipment. 

Tom is a lifelong learner and teacher. This scholarship 

is dedicated to his spirit of mentoring students 

and enhancing the life and health of others.

Foundation Holds Nature’s Landing Reception 

Thomas Wolfe wrote “Nature is the one 

place where miracles not only happen, 

but they happen all the time.” 

Southeast understands this wisdom. Nature’s 

Landing is the exterior centerpiece of our 

Hospital campus and a place of meditation, 

reflection and healing for patients and 

visitors. 

Nature’s Landing is also a portal to Cape 

Girardeau’s reemerging downtown, as well 

as a beautiful addition to our community. It 

has won two very prestigious awards which 

were celebrated at a reception on June 19 at 

the Wente Manor. Nature’s Landing was 

honored as winner of the 2009 American 

Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) 

Award of Excellence for Architecture Design 

and Planning, the highest achievable award 

in its category. A second award was presented in 

April, 2010 by the Central States Chapter of the 

ASLA. The St. Louis chapter of the American 

Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) has 

recognized Southeast Hospital’s Nature’s Landing 

for excellence in Landscape Architecture Design 

and Planning. SWT, a St. Louis-based, environmentally 

conscious planning and landscape 

architecture firm created Nature’s Landing. SWT 

received the Honor Award, the highest achievable 

award in its category, Landscape Architecture 

Design. 

Nature’s Landing offers donors a memorable way 

to help ensure that more men and women have the 

opportunity to make a positive difference in the 

lives of others and benefit the College of Nursing 

and Health Sciences Endowment Fund. Just as the 

beauty of Nature’s Landing will last for genera-

Doris McMillan Honored 

For Volunteerism 

Many elements encompass the art of quilt making. Besides the 

materials and the know-how, quilt making requires much 

time, love and dedication. Doris McMillan of Jackson has 

made and donated numerous quilts to the Hospital Foundation. 

Her involvement in the Quilt Program has affected the lives of 

parents and children throughout the region. 

Doris worked at Southeast Hospital for 29 years. She is a member 

of the Quarter Century Society, a group of past and present 

Southeast employees who have met or exceeded 25 years of 

service to Southeast. She is a Bronze Arrow Partner in the 

SoutheastHEALTH Foundation Million Dollar Club and a 

former 4-H volunteer. 

Doris is a member of the Southeast Hospital Auxiliary and has 

given 1,937 hours since early 2000. In addition, Doris has worked 

11 years helping organize and coordinate the annual Pennies 

from Heaven Auction. Doris has also made and donated quilts for 

the annual Horse Show which benefits the Southeast Youth 

Diabetes program and for the auction which benefits the We Can 

Weekend, a retreat for cancer patients and families. Her volunteerism 

doesn’t stop there, but continues at HealthPoint Fitness 

in Jackson. 

Doris is a valued volunteer and Southeast deeply appreciates her 

gifts of time and talent. 

Foundation Is One of Many Benefits 

for Employees of SoutheastHEALTH 

On December 26, 2009 SoutheastHEALTH employee Margaret 

Cain suffered a stroke which left her with more than her 

health problems. It left her without the ability to work and 

provide for her family. Margaret was contacted by Southeast Social 

Services to offer her a grant from the Foundation. Margaret 

gratefully accepted the Foundation grant and used it to pay her 

health insurance premium to retain her ability to receive the 

medical care she so desperately needed. 

Margaret comments that “giving to employees in a time of crisis 

helps them to succeed. The Foundation is one of the benefits that 

is available to the employees of SoutheasHEALTH. When someone 

experiences a crisis in his or her life, you can pull the 

cornerstone out from under them, or ensure that it is solidly in 

place to support them. The Foundation was my cornerstone. They 

helped save my life.” 

Margaret is happily back at work at Southeast today and is doing 

well. She has recovered from her stroke and feels blessed to be 

part of the Southeast family.

Howard G. Brown— 

His Legacy of 

Kindness Lives On 

Howard G. Brown, a shuttle driver for 

Southeast Missouri Hospital for 25 years, 

left the SoutheastHEALTH Foundation a 

legacy that is a fitting tribute to the care 

and compassion that he exhibited every day 

on the job at Southeast. Howard made a 

bequest to the Southeast Hospice program, 

which continues his spirit of kindness and 

concern. 

Howard died on August 4, 2009 at the age 

of 78. He is survived by a brother and a 

sister. 

As a Southeast 

Hospital 

shuttle driver 

for 13 years, 

Howard was 

often the first 

to greet many 

patients and 

visitors as they 

arrived at the 

hospital. And 

that greeting 

was always 

accompanied 

by a friendly smile. 

Howard began working as a shuttle driver 

at Southeast in 1996. The Hospital honored 

Howard with the O.D. Niswonger Spirit of 

Southeast Award in 1999. The nominations 

on Howard’s behalf cited his upbeat 

attitude and friendly and helpful nature.

David Hahs suggested purchasing 

a life insurance policy to benefit the

Nancy Bray relates that she understood the 

importance of giving on a regular basis. This 

was a systematic way to leverage those gifts into a 

much larger gift to give back to an organization 

that has given so much to her and her family. 

Nancy says, “Southeast does so much for the 

whole region. I am very grateful for my years of 

employment with Southeast. I have such appreciation 

for what Southeast did for my family 

when they were in need of healthcare, and I have 

always given to the Foundation with a grateful 

heart. David helped me realize that I don’t have 

to be a wealthy person to be able to leave a larger 

gift that makes a difference in the life of others.” 

“I was so honored to have worked with and been 

mentored by the Southeast Foundation founders: 

Bob Harrison, Hugh Logan, Glenn Hutson, 

Charlie Hood and Dave Niswonger. These men 

were giants and demonstrated what it means to 

be a leader and give back to your community.” 

After Nancy’s retirement in 2007 as Southeast’s 

Director of Marketing, she continued paying it 

forward through her volunteer work with the 

Auxiliary and with the Meals on Wheels program. 

Nancy is leaving a legacy of her own as a role 

model of caring and concern for others to follow. 

You may not think that you can “Leave A Legacy.” 

However, through a planned gift like Nancy’s
