Hello from St. Louis!!
Hello again everyone. We hope all is well in your world and you are enjoying
the new year.
Here in St. Louis we are celebrating 30 successful years of Archon with record
setting attendance, a World Series victory for our Cardinals, and a joyous
holiday season.
Our convention enjoyment, however, was marred by the sad news that one
of fandom's most beloved personalities had passed away. Wilson"Bob" Tucker
was one of Archon's most unique and special guests for many years. We, as
well as countless others "smoothed" with Bob and enjoyed his attitude of never
meeting a stranger and always meeting new friends. We will miss him dearly.
In order to honor all of the great times that fans all over the world had with Bob, we are naming the
2007 NASFIC "TUCKERCON". Many people will say and write things about Bob in a much better
fashion than we can, but this gesture is meant to be both our "Thank You" and our "goodbye" to a
terrific human being.
Meanwhile, even though August seems to be in the distant future,we know it will be upon us in no
time and we on the committee are busily preparing what we hope will be an enjoyable con for all of
our attendees. Our pre-registration numbers are terrific and many people have volunteered
suggestions and time to assist us from around the country. We want to be sure to let you know that
we are trying to provide as much as we can within the constraints of time, money, and available space
so that both the committee and the attendees can enjoy TuckerCon.
Here's wishing you all a wonderful new year, and we will see you in August.
St. Louis Science Fiction, Ltd., hosts of
Archon, St. Louis' premier SF/Fantasy
convention, is hosting TuckerCon/Archon 31, the
2007 North American Science Fiction Convention
(9th NASFiC), since the Worldcon has been
awarded to a non-North American site
(Yokohama, Japan).
To allow out-of-town families to attend before
Fall school sessions begin, we rescheduled the
2007 convention for a four-day weekend two
months earlier than usual -- 2-5 August instead of
our usual first weekend in October. This will place
our St. Louis area convention a month before the
Yokohama Worldcon, instead of a month after the
Worldcon if we had scheduled our normal
weekend.
Gaming Guest of Honor : James Ernest
James Ernest,(not just Cheapass Games) bio
James Ernest is an expert game designer, poker player, and juggler.
He began his gaming career in 1993 doing freelance work for Wizards of
the Coast. In 1996 Ernest founded a quirky, low-budget game company
called Cheapass Games (www.cheapass.com). Cheapass Games
exploded into the under-ten dollar market, with creative games like Kill
Doctor Lucky, Button Men, and Give Me The Brain. Today Ernest
continues to run Cheapass Games, as well as a freelance game design
studio, Lone Shark Games (www.lonesharkgames.com). Lone Shark
inventions include Pirates of the Spanish Main (Wizkids); Gloria Mundi
(Rio Grande); CowPoker (Steve Jackson Games) and many others.
James is a regular columnist in
Games Quarterly Magazine and Bluff
Magazine, and has won several awards for game design. At home,
James enjoys building Lego pirate ships, and playing video games
with his wife Carol and daughter Nora.
Filk Guests of Honor : Barry & Sally Childs-Helton
Barry (bass, guitars, Roland GR-33 guitar
synth, vocals) has a quiltwork
musical past that includes solo
coffeehouse singer/songwriter
sets, a quirky proto-indie band
(Barnacle Gonzo and the
Chianti Brothers), a
Bloomington poetry-and-music
experiment (Third Wind), a
semi-classified crew of sci-fi
folk-rockers (Black Book
Band) known for concertizing
at science fiction conventions,
and (with percussionist wife Sally) improvised
incidental music for Indy's Theater of Inclusion on
electric, acoustic, bass, and baritone guitars. His
background includes occasional immersion in
classical and jazz guitar; though his musical
tastes draw on the whole range of rock, they often
detour through traditional ballads, blues,
progressive jazz, Bluegrass, and Bach.
He has confessed to nurturing an attitude
problem toward most conventional wisdom. He
helps provide for the household by copyediting
computer books for one of the best-known
publishers in the business. He and Sally share
said household with a dog, a rowdy crew of
ferrets, and (probably, but what the heck) too
many instruments and books.
Sally At the age of 14 Sally Childs-Helton put
down the flute, picked up drum
sticks, and has never looked
back. In her mid-teens she
received a drum set from
parents who believed that girls
could indeed play drums.
She majored in music
education and percussion
performance as an undergrad,
and then graduate school at
Indiana University studying ethnomusicology.
She is a certified Music for People guided music
improvisation teacher, and she teaches and
conducts workshops in hand drums and ethnic
percussion, music improvisation, and creativity.
Sally also teaches ethnomusicology and world
music at the university level, and accompanies
dance, theater, and choruses. Sally is proud to be
a co-founder of the Midwest Drumming and
Dance Festival, and she does a Women's
Drumming Weekend annually at Oakwood
Retreat Center outside Muncie.
Sally especially enjoys jazz, new age, classical
(especially 20th c.), and all world musics. And
she's having big fun with Wild Mercy, adding as
many world music components as possible into
the Celtic tradition. As her husband Barry is fond
of saying, "It's all Earthling music."

A Brief History of Cleo
as told by her husband Ross
Nancy "cleo" Hathaway will
have been going to science fiction
conventions for almost 30 years
as of the Saint Louis NASFIC. Her
first convention was Archon 2,
held at Stan Musial & Biggies St.
Louis Hilton Inn back in 1978. She
had way too much fun. She came
with the group from Rocky Horror
but by the end of the weekend she
was hanging out with people from
Saint Louis fandom and hasn't looked back!
She was born (rumor has it) in 1959 in Asheville,
North Carolina, Then, she moved to Saint Louis
when she was seven and now lives in Rosamond,
California with Ross, her husband of 20 years.
There is nothing Cleo likes better than to get
behind the wheel of her minivan and drive. She
usually drives back to the Midwest two or three
If you’ve read much Science Fiction or Fantasy
in the last forty five years, you’ve almost certainly
had a book with a Darrell K. Sweet cover in your
hands.
Since beginning his career as a professional
illustrator in 1960, Darrell K. Sweet has had over
2000 pieces of art published, including the covers
of over 75 books from the New York Times
Bestseller List. His style is instantly recognizable,
full of craggy-faced wizards and gnomes with
bushy eyebrows, vividly colored dragons,
armored knights on enormous high-stepping
steeds, and lonely looking space travelers on
barren landscapes.
Darrell attended Syracuse University on a
scholarship and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts
degree. After graduating Darrell did his military
service, going on to become the head of the
training aids section of the 1ST Training Regiment
before being discharged in 1959.
TuckerCon - The 9th NASFiC/Archon 31 Masquerade
The Archon Masquerade Crew is getting ready for what we hope will be our biggest and best year
yet. We are looking forward to meeting new costumers, and introducing them to the best masquerade
experience in the Midwest. For those who are considering entering a costume in the Archon
Masquerade, we have included some answers to frequently asked questions. If you are new to
Archon, see our website at www.archonstl.org/masq for more complete information on the rules, stage
dimensions, and lighting and sound set-up. Or, contact us via snail mail at Masquerade Directors,
Sheila Lenkman and Scott Corwin, 9119 Madge Ave, Brentwood, Mo, 63144.
For our loyal regulars, there are a few new things to be aware of. As we are expecting a high number
of entries, we will cut off masquerade registration at 10:00pm on FRIDAY of the con. NO SATURDAY
REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ALLOWED. If you will be arriving at the con late on Friday or Saturday
morning, and you want to enter in the masquerade, you MUST pre-register with us via our on-line
registration. For those without internet access, we will be happy to mail you a copy of the rules, etc,
and a registration form to fill out and return. Also, remember we have instituted a “no live microphones
on stage” rule. All dialogue must be pre-recorded. All
entrants must keep to the one minute time limit! If you feel
you need more time, you must get permission from the
Masquerade Directors before the con. As always, please
contact us if you have any questions at all about the
masquerade. We look forward to seeing you next August!
1.What is the Masquerade?
Well, it is a costume contest, where the contestants literally
become that character for a brief while. They might be recreating
a favorite character from print, TV or film, or it may
be something straight out of their imagination. Period
costumes, also called "garb" are also welcome.
2.When is the Masquerade?
Archon, Saturday night, at 7 o'clock in the evening.
3.Who can enter the Masquerade?
Anyone can enter the masquerade, as long as they have
an Archon membership, and a costume. You can compete
as a group, or individually. All ages and skill levels are
welcome.
4.What do I get if I win?
Contestants compete for custom rosettes and bragging rights. Even better, there is a private party for
all of the contestants after the masquerade.
5.How do I enter the Masquerade?
All contestants must register at the Masquerade Registration table in the convention center, down the
hall from main registration. One of our staff members will answer your questions and help you fill out
the forms, which MUST be turned in by 10:00pm ON FRIDAY. Or, you may register on-line at
www.archonstl.org/masq. After registering, you will need to attend the mandatory meeting for all
contestants, and then schedule a brief tech rehearsal.
6.Why do I have to register before 10:00pm on Friday?
Well, putting on a show the size of the Archon Masquerade takes a lot of time. Our staff members have
to get ready for the show, and we run tech rehearsals all day Saturday. It makes for a very long day
for the staff.
Created with novaPDF Printer (www.novaPDF.com). Please register to remove this message.
6
7.Why do we need tech rehearsals?
The Archon Masquerade has a reputation for being one of the most professional looking masquerades
in the country. A big part of that is because of the time and attention we give every contestant on stage.
We run through your stage entrances and exits, lighting cues, sound, and generally make sure
everyone understands what they are doing. That way, the contestant is less nervous, and we can
showcase them to the best of our abilities.
8.What are the judges looking for?
There are two sets of judges for the masquerade. The first set is backstage, and are looking at the
workmanship of your costume. This is where you can show off your fine stitching, painting, metalwork,
etc,. They also look for engineering and overall construction. The second set of judges is in front of
the stage, and will be judging on the overall look of your costume presentation. Such things as how
well you become that character, how you move in the costume, and how you chose to present it will
be considered.
9.I have a hall costume. Can I enter that in the Archon Masquerade?
That depends. If you have a new costume, or one you have not worn at Archon before, you are
welcome to enter it. If, however, you have worn the same garb for years, it would not be
recommended. There will be some stiff competition up on stage, and you want to put your best up
against them. The judges may not look kindly on a costume they've seen roaming the halls all
weekend.
10.I bought my costume. Can I enter that in the Masquerade?
This is a tricky question, actually. If the costume in question is from Wal-Mart, the answer is definitely
"NO". If, however, you design a costume and pay someone to do part of the construction for you, you
may be able to enter the Masquerade PROVIDING you notify the Masquerade Director AND you give
the constructor full credit. For instance, you may enter as "Joe Smith" as "The Blob", wearing a
costume designed by "Joe Smith", constructed by "Jane Doe and Joe Smith". The workmanship
judges may or may not consider you eligible for awards, depending on the amount of work you actually
did on that costume. If an award is given, it will be in both names.
11.How much stage time can I have?
Contestants are allowed one minute on stage. Sometimes, however, a simple walk across the stage
is sufficient- you don't need to use the full minute. Presentations longer than one minute have to be
approved by the Masquerade Director.
12.If my friends and I do a short skit, can we have live microphones?
No. We have found that most presentations that used a live microphone bombed due to the simple
fact that most people do not know how to use a microphone properly- holding it too low, or too far back.
To avoid frustrating the audience, yourself, and the tech crew, we decided to no longer offer the live
mic on stage. You may, however lip synch to pre-recorded material.
13.Can I enter my ten-year-old in the Archon Masquerade?
Yes, although parents must remember that this is a competition, and there is a chance that your child
may not win. There is a special category for children 12 and under, so that they are not in direct
competition with the adults. Children entering the masquerade are assumed to have helped create the
costume to some extent. If an adult made the costume for the child, see question number 10, or ask
the Masquerade Director.
14.What is "documentation" and why should I bring it?
Documentation is for the judges to look at to determine how well you re-created your costume. It can
be as simple as a photocopy of a page from a book or comic, or a more elaborate photo journal of the
construction process. Not everyone needs documentation. Then again, not everyone has seen
episode five, season two of your favorite show. Or read that particular book/comic/manga/fanzine, etc.
314-865-1834 - artshow@archonstl.org
We're looking forward to another successful art
show. Archon 30 had over 60 artists, filling over
90 panels and tables with wonderful images and
objects. There will be a few changes from
Archon's normal procedures for the NASFIC,
especially note the new prices and earlier
deadlines:
Hanging fees are $25 for each full 4' wide x 7'
tall panel or 30" x 6' table, $12.50 for a half
panel/table; limit 3 per artist or agent. (Floor
space may be arranged -- generally at the table
sizes and rates.)
Mail-in art is accepted if accompanied by
reusable packing and payment for return
shipping. No storebought pieces are allowed.
Print shop fee is $12 with no limit on the
number of different pieces or the quantity of each
piece entered. Print shop artists must be in
attendance; no mail-in print shop art is accepted
in the print shop.
Junior (age 13-17) and Juvenile (under 13)
space is FREE, but is limited to one half panel or
must be of adult quality).
A 10% commission will be charged on all art
Refunds and Cancellations:
Cancellations must be received by NOON on
Friday of the Convention, and will entitle you to a
refund or credit for next year's show. No shows
and failure to cancel by deadline will forfeit refund
or credit.
See complete artist guidelines at
http://archonstl.org/31/artist_guidelines.html
Control & Bid Sheets:
Archon uses 2-part carbonless forms. These
are the only types of forms that will be accepted
for submissions. No photocopies will be
accepted. (I realized that everyone hates filling
out paperwork, but it allows for instant receipts for
purchased art.)
Re-Sale Artwork:
What is it? This is artwork purchased by an
individual at a previous convention but who would
now like to sell it to someone else. Re-sale art is
for direct sale only. There is no bidding on this art.
Fees: Panel or table fees are the same as the
regular art show, and the 10% commission rate
applies.
Types of Art:
All art submitted must be of a science fiction,
fantasy, fannish or humorous nature and must not
solely have a s/f or fantasy title attached to it. The
art show staff reserves the right to refuse art that
does not fall into these categories or that does not
live up to the standards we would like to
encourage at Archon.
See complete artist guidelines at
http://archonstl.org/31/artist_guidelines.html
Auction:
There will be 4 bids to auction. The only
exception will be Art Show Award winners. They
will be included in the auction regardless of the
number of bids received.
Items not sold at auction will be offered for sale
on Sunday for the direct sale price if it has

From Page To Stage
When you hear that your favorite book or
movie has been “optioned” for a film or
television mini-series, you may feel both
elation and dread. Anytime a book is being
adapted for stage, screen, or some other
performing arts medium, change is
inevitable. And it is this change that fans of
particular titles abhor and resent from
Hollywood. When occurrences or characters
absent from the original story appear,
(Minority Report, The League of
Extraordinary Gentlemen, Legends of
Earthsea) or a successful book fails as a film
(Timeline, Queen of the Damned), the go-to
excuse is “Books rarely translate well…”; but if this were the case, why do Harry Potter, Lord of the
Rings, and The X-Men films continue to succeed at the box office?
These questions are answered with interest in From Page to Stage, a workshop in adapting literature
for the performing arts, presented by Lani Tupu and Tee Morris.
Lani Tupu (Commander Crais and the voice of Pilot from Farscape) and Tee Morris (author of
MOREVI and Billibub Baddings and the Case of the Singing Sword) bring their collected experiences
as actors and writers together in From Page to Stage (FP2S), a look into one of the toughest aspects
of entertainment: adapting published works for stage, film, or radio. This interactive two-hour seminar
will take its participants through the process of written work being adapted for stage. Ending with a
candid and honest discussion on when things work or when writers get lost in translation, From Page
to Stage gives you an idea of what to expect on the road between published work and blockbuster
movie.
For more detail on what the workshop entails see Tee Morris’ website:
http://www.teemorris.com/frompage2stage/
The workshop is $75.00 for 3 hours. Enrollment in advance is preferred, and you can do that through
http://www.archonstl.org/31 then click on the menu path for Workshops, if space is still available you
may purchase at the convention, too. Everyone must bring a full pad of 8 ½ x 11 paper and pen or
pencil.
Please Note:
This workshop is neither organized or operated by TuckerCon - The 9th NASFiC/Archon 31and the fees do not go to the
convention.
and all workers must have a valid convention
rate; if paid separately, the rate in effect at the
time of membership payment will apply.
number of tables desired, what type of
merchandise you plan to sell, and if you require
electricity (electricity will be billed separately at
the convention center's current quoted rates;
their 2006 rates were $35 for up to 500 watt
service, $45 for 501-1000 watt service, $55 for
HOTELS:
Unused portions of the room blocks for all hotels,
except the Holiday Inn, will be released on or
about July 1st. The Holiday Inn block will be
released on June 1st.
BE AWARE - Ask for ARCHON, Not Tuckercon
or NASFIC, when making reservations.
The room rates listed below do not include 11% or 13% tax.
CONVENTION HOTEL:
Holiday Inn:
1000 Eastport Plaza Drive, Collinsville, IL
62234-6104; 1-800-551-5133 ($119.95 singlequad,
$189.95 for parlor half of Junior Suites;
includes coupons for full American breakfast for
up to two people per room per day)
Internet access: Wireless Ethernet, all rooms,
Wired Ethernet "bridges" available on request
NOTE: All reservations are required to include at
least Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, and will be
charged to your credit card at the time of booking.
Reservations cancelled on or after June 1st, 2007 will
not be refunded.
IN ADDITION: The Holiday Inn is insisting guests fill
out, sign, and return a form agreeing to the above, and
a separate form with the credit card information
including a photocopy of both sides of the credit card.
We have argued, pleaded, and yelled at them and, so
far, they have refused to budge on this outrageous
requirement. We intend to keep working on them to
return to their former practice of booking reservations
over the phone, and eliminating these forms. We hope
to at least eliminate the requirement for photocopying
the credit card, as this is a serious security issue,
dependent on them adequately securing the paper
forms containing both the credit card account
information and an image of the actual card, complete
with signature and security code.
A SUGGESTION: To avoid the security problem of the
Holiday Inn keeping paper copies of your credit card for
up to 10 months, you can use a one-time-use prepaid
credit card, or debit gift card. Commerce Bank issues
Visa gift cards in specific amounts for $4.99. There are
also other Visa Gift card providers, and you can also
get Mastercard and Discover (can only be ordered
online) prepaid and gift cards.
Thanks to Rick (rebsiot_at_charter.net)
the con suite will be on the ground floor, with
access to the patio for smokers.
PARTIES:
The ground-floor wing leading to the indoor pool
will be blocked as the dedicated party wing
(partiers should let both the hotel and the Archon
committee know if they plan to host a party, so we
can guarantee a room in that section. NO parties
will be allowed on other floors.
For more information, and to register your
party online, see
for a list of currently-announced parties, see
Except for the COURTYARD, the public areas
of the hotel's first floor will be designated
NON-SMOKING.
ADDITIONAL HOTELS:
Some of these hotels are already sold out, but
most of them have some rooms held outside the
Archon block, and you may still be able to get a
non-block room reservation at a similar price.
We plan to run wheelchair-capable shuttle
buses, but we do not yet know if we will be able
to extend the shuttle service to the Caseyville and
Fairview Heights overflow hotels.
Small Press Alley
This will be a place for authors and "small press" publishers to sell their books separately from the
Dealers Room, similar to the Artists Alley. It will tentatively be located in the long rear entry hallway
leading to Registration; 6'x30" tables will be $85 each, or $45 for a half table. For more information,
contact Jill Lybarger (Dealers Room).
2007 TuckerCon Artist Alley
TuckerCon - The 9th NASFiC/Archon 31 will
again be hosting an Artist’s Alley. Some of the
basic information is as follows.
(Detailed info available from the website at
http://www.archonstl.org/31/index2.html)
Location: The Artist Alley will be located
outside of the art show in the Gateway Center.
Tables and Rates: The Artist Alley will consist
of 21 6'x30" tables. TuckerCon reserves the right
to change the number of tables. To guarantee a
table in the Artist Alley, Artists need to reserve a
table space in their name and pre-register for the
convention.
Table space will be assigned on a first-paid,
first-served basis. Rates for Artist Alley are $60
per table. Artists who wish to share tables or be at
adjacent tables should contact the Artist Alley
Coordinator.
If you require electricity: There are outlets
available in the hallway where the Artist Alley is
located. We recommend the artist bring an
extension cord and powerstrip. If the artist
requires special electrical needs, please contact
the Artist Alley coordinator listed below.
Reserving a Table: First contact the Artist Alley
Coordinator (artistalley@archonstl.org) to verify
tables are available. (At the time of this
publication, there are five tables still available).
Include your name, studio (or group), number of
Artists in your group, and the number of table
spaces you would like to reserve. The coordinator
will review your request and let you know by email
if your reservation request is approved. Once
your request is approved, mail the signed Artist
Alley Contract (available from the website at
http://www.archonstl.org/31/index2.html) with
payment (made out to Archon) to:
your payments, you can use the usual credit
cards - Mastercard, Visa, Diner's Club, and
American Express.
Once all tables are sold out, the Coordinator will
maintain a waiting list of artists.
Hours of Operation: Artists may occupy their
tables starting at 5PM on Thursday, Aug. 2 until
Noon on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2006. Other than that,
there are no set hours. The tables are in an open
area, so the Artists can occupy them as long as
they want in-between opening and closing. Artists
must remove all their material from the Artist Alley
by Noon Sunday.
Appropriate Sales: Artists may only sell their
own work in the Artist Alley. Artists will not sell
commercial merchandise at their table, unless it is
their own work. The Artist may not sell anything
other than art originally created by themselves in
one form or another. The Artist may not re-sell
materials that can be bought in a store. Artists will
check IDs of persons to ensure they are 18 years
or older before allowing them to purchase or buy
adult material. Artists will ensure that any such
works are kept in separate folders from other
work.
Fan art will be permitted only if it is of an original
concept design by the artist and not a copy of an
existing design. It should also be of limited
production and not mass-produced. If there are
any questions, ask the Artist Ally Coordinator.
Art Show: The Artist Alley is a separate entity
from the Art Show. The Art Show bears no
responsibilities to the Artist Alley Artists and vice
versa.
Security: Artists are responsible for securing
their own works and material when not present at
their tables. The Art Show has graciously offered
to allow Artist Alley Artists to store their wares in a
designated area in the Art Show room, which will
be locked at night.
Contacts: Any questions can be directed to
the Artist Alley Coordinator at
artistalley@archonstl.org
or to artistalley@artczar.org.

Got your good walking/standing shoes on?
Programming at TuckerCon will get underway as soon as
humanly possible after registration [officially] opens and will run
(almost) continuously through Sunday afternoon in (and outside)
all our facilities.
Prepare to be overloaded with your choice among all the
panels (which will include late night as well as special interest
tracks for children, young adults, writing, art, science, media,
podcasting, gaming, masquerade, fan fiction, filking, and
academic) plus readings, plays, food functions, workshops,
signings, slide shows, audience participation events, award
presentations, demonstrations (both hands-on and not), "make &
takes", concerts, fannish games, one-on-one literary beers and
kaffeklatches, fan club meetings, and nightly dances, that you
can stand. But Wait! There's More!!
For Tuckercon we're hoping to come up with the most
innovative and outstanding programming we've ever done and
we need your help to do so! If you are interested in participating
in programming at Tuckercon, but are not necessarily on any
current Archon programming list, please send your name and
subject matter to programming@archonstl.org, and please be
sure to put "TuckerCon programming" in the subject field. You
will be contacted as soon as possible and asked to give details
of any programming at that time.
Also, if you have subjects that you'd like to see at TuckerCon,
but do not necessarily want to participate in them, please forward
those ideas in detail to the above email address.
We can't guarantee that everyone will get to participate or that
every programming item suggested will be used, but we do plan
to incorporate as many volunteers and ideas as possible.
Thanks in advance for your interest and help.
Memberships:
NOTE THE RATE CHANGE TAKING EFFECT ON FEBRUARY 16TH! From 1 August 2006 thru 15
February 2007, the Attending rates will be $90 Adult, $75 Young Adult (age 11-16 as of 2 Aug 2007),
and $65 Child (age 6-10 as of 2 Aug 2007). Children under the age of 6 may be registered, and will
receive their own badge, but will not receive any publications. Pre-Supporter price breaks are no
longer in effect.
After 15 February 2007, the Adult rate will increase to $120, and may be higher at the door. The
Young Adult and Child rates will remain at $75 and $65, respectively.
The Supporting rate (which gets you all convention publications, but does not convey attendance
rights) is $35. Conversion from Supporting to Attending will be the difference between $35 and the
applicable Attending rate at the time of conversion.
Dealers and artists qualify for a special $70 membership rate between August 1, 2006 and February
15, 2007 if the membership registrations are sent in with their table/panel space payments. If paid
separately, the rate in effect at the time of membership payment will apply.
One-day adult memberships rates have not yet been set. One-day memberships will only be sold at
the door; members who choose to stay for additional days can upgrade for the difference between the
one-day rate and full membership.
The usual Archon practice of comping pro and past GoH memberships will be changed for this
convention only; see our Guest Membership Policy on the con's web page for details.
To see if you were a Pre-Supporter or Voter, or if you have already converted, check the list further
on in this Progress Report or online at http://www.archonstl.org/31/memberlist.html.
To join or convert, fill out the form below or online at
http://www.archonstl.org/31/membform.html.
Cleo (Cont. From p. 5)
around such a long time she knows some of the best stories about Saint Louis fandom. Ask her some
tales of the Henry VIII or some of the Archons held at the Chase Park Plaza. She was there and there
are many witnesses to her antics.
Sweet (Cont. from p. 5)
Hambly.
A collection of his work entitled Beyond Fantasy: The Art of Darrell K.
Sweet was published by Friedlander in 1996 in both hardcover and
softcover. The book is currently out of print, and copies sell for double
or more of the cover price in the collectors’ market.
His work hasn’t been limited to book covers. His art has been used
for calendars, trading cards, role playing games, the Romantic Castles
of Europe collectors plate series, advertising, the Wyoming Fish and
Game department, the New Jersey bicentennial, and on and on.
Likewise, he hasn’t limited himself to Science Fiction and Fantasy and
he’s currently working on a series of western paintings for the
openings of the “Mountain Trails” galleries in Wyoming and New
Mexico. To his knowledge, his original paintings are included in
private collections in thirty five states and in five European countries.
In addition to his many Artist Guest of Honor and other
convention appearances, his awards and nominations, his
exhibitions and “one man shows” in places like New York,
Philadelphia, Seattle, Nashville, Austin and Atlanta,
Darrell’s talents have been recognized through
invitations to teach. He’s given lectures at
Trenton State College and Syracuse
University (his alma mater), where
he taught the Summer Art
Program. Recently he’s been
teaching close to home by giving a
course in acrylic painting for the Art
League in Cody, Wyoming where
he lives with his wife Janet and son
Darrell R. Sweet, an artist and
sculptor.
You can see some of the work of
the Sweet family at their official
web site www.sweetartwork.com
We’re sure you’ll enjoy meeting
our Artist Guest of Honor Darrell K.
Sweet, seeing some of his original
works in person and having the
opportunity to hear him speak
about his amazing career as a
professional illustrator of the
fantastic.
