Three Times “Thank You!“
Michael Kubenz, Ulrich Schöpker and Anita Würmser
at the Image Award presentation (from left to right)
For the third year in a row Schmitz Cargobull has won
the image award presented by the specialist magazine
VerkehrsRundschau! The award judging panel comprises
executives from forwarding agencies and the transport
industry.
For the trailer specialist from the
Münsterland 2009 began with a
magnificent success! At the end of
January executive board member
Ulrich Schöpker was handed the image
award for 2009 of the trade journal
VerkehrsRundschau by laudator
Michael Kubenz. With this Schmitz
Cargobull won the hotly contested
prize in the “Trailer” category for the
third time in a row The award was
presented by Michael Kubenz, Presi-
dent of the German Forwarding and
Logistics Association (DSLV). In his
speech Mr. Kubenz stressed how
important the aspects of customer
orientation, quality and service for
trailers and semitrailers were to him
and his colleagues. “Here it is evident
that the people from Cargobull
have an open ear for their customers
and a fully functioning blanket
service network throughout Europe.
Which is to our benefit,“ he said.
“For me Schmitz Cargobull‘s test
centre, which is unique in the industry,
is an important factor in the decision-making
process, as it allows
us customers to experience and understand
the quality on offer! “One
of the other eight categories in the
image ranking is telematics. Cargobull
Telematics, the still-young trailer
telematics system, was ranked sixth
in the evaluation. In his words of
gratitude concerning the first place
in the trailer awards, Ulrich Schöpker
made the following self-critical statement:
“We are not satisfied with this
ranking in the telematics category.
In spite of our considerable success
among the large number of suppliers
on the market, we have to place
greater emphasis on the benefits of
this trailer telematics system to the
industry. Trailer telematics stands
above all for shipment tracking and
safeguarding the forwarding agent’s
logistical services.“ (gro)
Tailor-made precisely to customer requirements, Cargobull Trailer
Store (CTS) presents the ideal range of products for a discerning
environment: Top Used Vehicles with Three Stars: H H H
In difficult times the Cargobull Trailer Store
(CTS) is offering a solution to make life easier!
For anyone requiring a trailer in top condition
quickly, CTS offers an inexpensive alternative:
tested 3-star used vehicles that are as good
as new! The economic climate is not making
it easy for transport companies to invest in
new vehicles. If new transport contracts are
acquired, there are often no opportunities for
obtaining the requisite short-term investment
or finance to enlarge or renew the vehicle fleet.
The current campaign of the Cargobull Trailer
Store offers specific advantages: the “3- star“
vehicles. These are exclusively quality products
of the S.KO, S.CS, S.CF and S.KI ranges
from Schmitz Cargobull. The vehicles are not
more than two years old – and in many cases
considerably younger. Every trailer has a oneyear
CTS warranty and is checked through
before handover to ensure that it is completely
free of any faults. Additionally, all vehicles
have a fresh MOT and safety test certificate. In
the case of refrigerated vehicles the CTS also
performs a new cooling unit service.
Height-adjustable roof, double-decker, two loading levels, removable corner stanchions,
rail-transportable or TIR capability – the S.CS knows no limits.
People like to talk about a “Jack
of all trades” when a product
brings together a large number
of advantages. And: in this case the
image is correct. Thanks to its extensive
modular system, the S.CS
curtainsider semitrailer offers a wide
range of versions with which forwarding
agencies can effectively deal with
almost any transport job. With the new
sturdy generation of fabric tarpaulins
known as TARPOS ® , the removable
corner stanchions, the double-decker
system or the second loading level,
the vehicle’s TIR capability is now
supplemented by further technical
features. Particularly in times of economic
turbulence, the perfect interplay
of practical detailed solutions pays off
as a competitive advantage for the forwarding
agencies.
In sophisticated trailer technology it
is not spectacular innovations and design
changes that count. Instead forwarding
and shipping agents expect
cost-reducing measures which are not
only practicable, but which also work
in combination with one another. Under
pressure from the increase in the road
toll and dramatically falling transport
volumes, simple operation, low levels
of wear and tear, low running costs
and a high degree of vehicle availability
therefore have priority in day-to-day
business. Moreover, the flexible use of
cargo space and certified load securing
systems pay their way.
The S.CS with TIR equipment and
the new generation of TARPOS ® Safety
Technology is such a multi-talent
for cross-border traffic. As a flexible
curtainsider semitrailer it fulfils the TIR
requirements without restriction. Now
nothing stands in the way of fast customs
clearance on journeys beyond
the EU borders – for example to Russia,
Ukraine or Turkey. The TIR seal is
guaranteed thanks to the novel routing
of the customs-approved fastening
rope and structural elements for securing
the tarpaulin tensioning roads
and roof tarpaulin. Up to now only the
flatbed semitrailer with side platform
gates and “Hamburg tarpaulin” fulfilled
the criteria. This renders handling and
side loading much more difficult and
severely restricted. The new solution
finally makes use of all of the advantages
of the flexible curtainsider in TIR
transport. The three-webbed separated
tarpaulin construction allows
tarpaulin replaces the PVC tarpaulin,
which is very rigid in the cold, and
can be pushed to the side in just two
minutes. The semi-trailer can now be
loaded and unloaded from above, the
side or through the rear. This degree of
flexibility serves the purpose of effective
cargo space use in the same way
as the optional double-decker system,
which is height-adjustable, or the permanently
installed second loading level.
Through efficient use of the cargo space
it is possible to transport up to 67 Europallets
in the double-decker system.
Friendly Service
Schmitz Cargobull plays an important role in leading
bakery Hiestand & Suhr’s logistics operation
Hiestand & Suhr Handels- und
Logistik GmbH is one of the
most innovative suppliers of highquality
deep frozen pastries in
Germany and is part of Aryzta AG,
which is listed on the stock exchange.
The range of products offered
byb the company comprises
a huge number of high-quality frozen
pastries made of natural unmodified
raw materials and a varied
range of services.
The wide range of products
and services on offer includes croissants,
sweet biscuits or savoury
snacks, as well as rolls, baguettes
or bread specialities – not forgetting
reliable and punctual delivery with
the company‘s own vehicle fleet,
as well as sales support, training
and expert advice. Hiestand & Suhr
are suppliers to renowned customers,
for example the shops of major
petrol station chains, numerous
self-service and standard bakeries,
as well as other suppliers of bakery
products who do not have their own
production facilities. “Part of our
success is certainly based on our
philosophy of going the last mile to
the customer ourselves,“ says Jörg
Unruh, Head of the Logistics Division
at Hiestand & Suhr Handelsund
Logistik GmbH, describing the
distinctive aspect of the company.
“Hardly any of our competitors offer
their customers such an all-round
service. Our drivers are motorised
bakery sales assistants, so to
speak,“ Unruh goes on. “We reach
98% of our customers with our own
vehicle fleet. Only 2% is handled
by partner companies. I am also
pleased to say that we hardly ever
receive any complaints concerning
our own vehicles or staff!“ the logistics
manager adds.
The fleet of 12 and 18 tonners
comprises 190 vehicles in Germany
and Switzerland. All new vehicles –
which now make up 60% of the fleet
– are fitted with a FERROPLAST ®
box body from Schmitz Cargobull.
“When we purchase new vehicles
the quality is just as important to
us as the price,“ explains vehicle
fleet manager Thomas Schneider.
“Today we have plenty of expertise
concerning what features a good
distribution vehicle must have and
invest a lot of research work into our
invitations to tender.“ Schneider explains
that during the peak period of
the Easter business he had to hire
some rental vehicles. “Then we saw
that such low-budget solutions do
not meet our expectations in terms
of body quality or cooling unit performance!“
Thomas Schneider feels sure that
it would be possible to reduce the
purchase price of his fleet by a third.
“but in the long term this does not
pay off! We do not operate standard
vehicles, but vehicles for professional
use.“ As examples of this he
refers to the three-winged rear door.
“With this the driver is able to remove
part-loads through the middle
door. Furthermore, the underfloor
tail lift saves us the trouble of having
to activate the loading platform
every time the vehicle is loaded or
unloaded.“ For reasons of corrosion
protection and hygiene Hiestand &
Suhr also has all fittings made from
stainless steel. “Other special features
are our LED lighting systems
or additional stop plates, which reinforce
the body,“ says Schneider.
“The fact that Schmitz Cargobull
also achieves a very good k value
in spite of the relatively thin panels
helps us of course with the design
of economical and effective cooling
units! Moreover, we have also
found that the body is much sturdier
than many products of the
competitors and in the worst case
scenario is easier to repair.“ Their
own experience is used as a basis
for modifying the M.KO, for example
with the side reinforcements which
effectively prevent penetration of
the covering layer by the door handles
– important when the doors
are opened at least 30 times a day.
The latest project of Jörg Unruh and
Technical Project Manager Thomas
Schneider is a truck with trailer for
internal shuttle transport. “With this
we have set a new standard as far
as handling and refrigerating capacity
are concerned,“ explains Unruh
with more than a little pride. The
body and trailer are also produced
by Schmitz Cargobull. “We are considering
expanding the concept, as
with the tractor-trailer combination
we mainly service short distances
because these are expensive to purchase
from forwarding agencies,“
the logistics manager explains as
the reason for his commitment to
work that goes beyond distribution
alone.
Hiestand & Suhr Handels- und
Logistik GmbH has outsourced vehicle
management to an external
vehicle fleet service provider. “They
deal with maintenance and repair
and we only control matters from
the background,“ explains Thomas
Schneider. “It is important to concentrate
on your core business,“
Jörg Unruh continues. “If you have
reliable partners, then there is nothing
wrong with that!“ (tt)
Together with the sturdy body this
fulfils the certification requirements
according to EN 12642 XL.
Furthermore, the tensioned tarpaulin
scarcely swells up, thereby improving
the aerodynamics. Fuel consumption
is reduced, as are environmentally
harmful emissions. Even safety is
improved, as the field of vision in the
rear-view mirror is not restricted by the
swollen tarpaulin. Even safety levels
are improved: The field of vision in the
rear-view mirror is kept clear by a taut
tarpaulin that does not expand. The
tarpaulin is of low flammability and
fulfils the ADR requirements for the
transport of hazardous goods.
EN 12642 Code XL Safety Certificate
Ensures Transport Safety
During checks by the police the
certification according to EN 12462 XL
simplifies the procedure considerably,
as the high side and body strength
is certified. If the vehicle is correctly
loaded to ensure that the cargo is not
able to slip, there is nothing to prevent
the vehicle being allowed to continue
on its journey quickly. One option in
the Schmitz Cargobull modular system
is the perforated steel rails, with
which part loads can be variably positioned
at the front and rear by means
of load securing beams.
Provides increased pass-through
width at the side
More Flexibility during Loading:
Removable Corner Stanchions
Convenient loading is also the focal
point with the corner stanchions
that can be twisted or pushed out. The
corner stanchion that can be twisted
out at the side permits through-loading
via the rear up to a width of 3,380
millimetres. The simple operation of
the sturdy mechanism guarantees fast
and undamaged loading of the goods.
At first the sliding roofs are opened
completely. The stanchions and inserted
boards have to be removed. With
the help of a crank the entire galvanised
construction is turned towards
the outside by up to 450 mm on every
side. For side loading with particularly
long parts the development team has
conceived the corner stanchion that
can be pushed out towards the rear.
These corner stanchions are pushed
out so far that more space is acquired
for the sliding stanchions and the sliding
tarpaulin. The pass-through width
via the sides is then around 13 metres.
This solution represents an example
of how Schmitz Cargobull also integrates
specific customer requirements
into the modular system. The corner
stanchion that can be pushed out is
already being successfully used for
the transport of bus roofs.
VARIOS ® : A Mega with Standard
Tyres
Similarly, operation with changing
tractors and varying fifth-wheel heights
does not represent a hurdle for the
semitrailers constructed according to
the VARIOS ® design. This considerably
simplifies vehicle fleet material planning.
Thanks to the variable inside height of
the trailer, fifth-wheel coupling heights
from 965 mm to 1,150 mm ensure optimum
use of the loading volume. The
new body adjustment system solves
the problem with consummate ease.
by means of a simple plug-in mechanism
at intervals of 50 mm the height of
the body is varied at the front and rear.
Together with the “Dual Ride Height“ air
suspension the vehicle is then adapted
to the coupling heights of 965 mm to
1,150 mm. Particularly in the hotly contested
competition for freight, the high
level of flexibility and operational readiness
is a decisive factor.
Simple Changeover between Road
and Rail
In addition to the variability required
with respect to loading, highest demands
are also placed on the flexibility
of trailer deployment. The S.CS with
the VARIOS ® system can be equipped
Close-Up Experience
and retrofitted for combined road-rail
transport (codification P400 with a
maximum internal height of 3,000 mm).
The rail-transportable S.CS is available
for various types of wagon, and in
conjunction with a body strength that
complies with EN 12642 XL is authorised
for speeds of up to 140 km/h.
Reliable Financial Partner
Maximum vehicle availability and
optimum life cycle costs are also the
main focus of the service subsidiaries
of Schmitz Cargobull. The transport
companies should be able to concentrate
fully on their core business.
Particularly during times of financial
crisis Cargobull Finance stands by its
customers with various financing opportunities.
Packages that are tailormade
to fulfil customer requirements
are put together from the leasing, hire
purchase and full-service offerings.
Due to their profound knowledge of
the market, the finance subsidiaries
can offer appropriate finance more
quickly and effectively than a bank.
Cargobull Finance has more than
eight years‘ experience of the financing
of new and second-hand commercial
vehicles. A good 9,000 vehicles
are on the road with full service
agreements. One basis for the high
level of customer acceptance is their
wide-ranging experience of the country-specific
framework conditions and
tax laws in particular.
For repairs, maintenance and service
the pan-European service network
of Cargobull Parts & Services with
850 authorised workshops is available.
These partners guarantee a high
level of spare parts availability, as well
as fast and professional repairs. As a
result the off-road times for the trailers
are reduced to a minimum. (gro)
Over 300 customers attended Schmitz Cargobull’s recent roadshow in the Spanish port
when recalling the successful
customer event. “The sliding bogie
met with a particularly high level of
interest among the professionals. Not
only can it accommodate all container
lengths from 22 to 45 ft, but its sliding
chassis also allows optimum central
simple for the user to load the vehicle
from the rear, while at the same time
the 25% rule for the rear axle load of
The Acid Test
One year ago Schmitz Cargobull put its Validation Center (CVC) into operation. The wellequipped
experimental workshop, prototype construction and the variable test beds
guarantee short development times and high vehicle quality.
Will the newly developed axle
be able to cover 1 million
kilometres without difficulty?
Is the new frame generation
able to stand up to the stresses and
strains of combined road-rail transport?
Questions which are extremely
important to the user – who expects
to be able to use the products without
them breaking down. In order not to
use the customer as an involuntary
tester, Schmitz Cargobull perform
extensive tests on new components
and vehicles in their own test centre
before the start of series production.
With the new Cargobull Validation
Center (CVC) it has been possible to
intensify the test phase. At the CVC
the en gineers and technicians check
not only entire semitrailers, but also
individual components and parts with
respect to their durability and suitability
for daily use. The greatest advantage
over road tests: reproducibility
and the extensive time savings. For
example it is possible to use various
test beds to test individual components
independently of the entire
vehicle with respect to the stresses
and strains which they would have
to endure when covering 1 million
kilometres on the road. Ideally such a
test lasts only two weeks! In this way
it is possible to optimise new components
and designs in the experimental
Continued from PAGE 1
laboratory and put them on the road
quickly and yet fully developed in
terms of their technology.
A modular system for test beds allows
rapid adaptation to the respective
requirements of the planned trial.
Currently the CVC is determining the
resilience of floor segments of the
S.KO COOL, as well as testing and
optimising a new spare wheel holder
for the S.CF. On so-called vibration
tables the developers test attached
parts and their attachment concepts,
the aim of which is to provide even
more payload and stability – i.e. minimise
the life cycle costs of the trailer!
Especially in the field of axle development
the component test beds
perform important work in the further
refinement of axle components and
the analysis of weak points. Short
test phases mean low costs, which
are subsequently reflected in product
prices that are in line with the market.
The centrepiece of the CVC is the
road simulator, with which entire vehicles
can be tested with respect to
their lifetime. Load cycles determined
beforehand on the road – which may
be different for every type of vehicle
due to their structure – can be dynamically
reproduced on this test bed.
In a current project Schmitz Cargobull
are optimising chassis frame parts of
the S.KI semitrailer tipper vehicles.
To this purpose data have been measured,
analysed and prepared as a
basis for testing within the framework
of a sizeable measurement campaign.
For this data, which was recorded
with an appropriately equipped test
tractor-trailer combination both on the
customer‘s premises in Eastern Europe
and here on the test track, a test
program was drawn up that serves as
the basis for testing on the road simulator.
This is further supported by
several semi-trailer tippers fitted with
long-term measurement technology
which records the customer‘s operational
data and loads over a period of
several months in order to obtain an
even more detailed overview of the
everyday loads to which the vehicles
are subjected.
Experience up to now with the
CVC and the test beds has been positive.
It has become apparent that with
the help of modern testing technology
in both the entire vehicle and at the
component level, it is possible to detect
and overcome possible problems
during the early development process.
The result of all this is that this project,
which so far is unique in the trailer industry
in this order of magnitude, guarantees
that customers of the “blue
elephant“ are supplied with reliable
and light vehicles that have optimum
maintenance characteristics! (tt)
All-Round Economic
Stimulus Package
Scania in Germany is the first truck supplier to offer
its customers the chance to hire tractors and trailers.
Since May 2008 Schmitz Cargobull Partner has been
a partner in this all-inclusive service, which is now
being expanded.
Around 12 months ago Scania
Germany started offering trucks
and trailers together in a rental
package. With “Scania Rent Truck
& Trailer“ the customer can choose
from a pool of Scania vehicles comprising
around 1,000 tractors and
motor units. In addition there are
currently around 200 S.CS curtainsider
semitrailers, S.KO refrigerated
semitrailers and S.CS COIL vehicles
with coil bodies from Schmitz Cargobull
available.
“The additional service offering
has been well accepted by our
customers in spite of the difficult
economic environment,“ explains
Christian Teichmann, Director of
Truck Sales at Scania Germany/
Austria. “With the combined rental
of Scania trucks and Schmitz Cargobull
trailers we can offer our customers
even more flexibility during
their daily business.“ However, Mr
Teichmann does admit that customers
would like to see a greater level
of differentiation in the trailer fleet.
“We have therefore taken the decision
to expand our trailer fleet by
adding new versions. In future these
will also include dry freight box vehicles,
paper trailers and semi-trailer
container chassis, sliding floor trailers
and – last but not least – semitrailer
tippers. And Schmitz Cargobull
will remain our partner as we
expand the range of trailers we have
on offer!“ In the trailer fleet Scania
pay particular attention to the safe
securing of loads. All S.CS and
S.KO vehicles have a load securing
certificate.
The curtainsider semitrailers are
equipped with an optimised number
of load securing points. “As a result
of the expansion of the vehicles we
have on offer, our customers can
react more flexibly to various transport
requirements,“ confirms Christian
Teichmann.
Customers can rent Scania tractors
plus Schmitz Cargobull trailers
throughout Germany from a total
of 22 authorised Scania dealers,
where they can choose between the
long and short-term rental of trucks
and trailers from Scania Rent. In
addition to the vehicles, the rental
contract also includes a full service
agreement with repairs and maintenance
– in the case of the trailers
through Cargobull Parts & Services
– a tyre service and the insurance
of trucks and trailers. If vehicles are
rented for six months or longer an
on-board unit (ObU) is also offered.
The list of options will also include a
telematic system in the future. (ae)
Since its foundation in 1905, the Friedrich Tiemann group of firms has faced up to many
challenges. Today the all-round service provider, which was established as a stevedore
company, also functions as a Schmitz Cargobull Service Partner in Bremerhaven.
Service Provider for Companies
With a wide range of services and as a partner of the FLO logistics network, the transport
and logistics professionals at Depaeuw have a broad base. A modern and environmentally
friendly vehicle fleet ensure the company‘s success.
Seventeen million kilometres were
covered by the Depaeuw fleet
last year. 190 tractors keep the 210
trailers and semitrailers rolling. The
family concern, which was founded
in 1950 by Gylbert Depaeuw in
Malo les bains, today operates from
two locations: Lille (Lompret) and
Dunkirk.
Since 1998 Depaeuw has been a
member of the France Lots Organisation
(FLO), a network of companies
established in 1993 which currently
has 70 firms at a total of 180
locations. FLO is a service provider
for storage, transport and vehicle
hire and organises the transport of
part and complete loads in France
and the most important other European
countries.
Some of Depaeuw’s main points
of focus are the fields of the retail
trade, food, the automotive and steel
industry, building materials, cardboard
packagings and container
transport services the French company
also makes use of intermodal
strength lies in its optimisation of
Amongst other things the workshop
specialises in the corrective
maintenance of transport refrigeration
systems. Furthermore, Tiemann
have two diagnostic stations for
electronic braking and telematics
Depaeuw sees itself as a highperformance
service provider for
companies in the neighbourhood. In
the last few years the company has
succeeded in establishing itself as a
service partner and regional market
leader in local industry. The company
pursues the aim of being present
at all phases of the supply chain.
Participation in the FLO network –
which operates a very diversified
vehicle fleet, including curtainsiders,
box body and special semitrailers
– also allows Depaeuw to
offer transport solutions for special
cases. In their own trailer park Depaeuw
have also deployed products
made by Schmitz Cargobull since
last year. Currently around one third
of the S.CS curtainsider semitrailers
were produced at the works in Altenberge.
“In the meantime all of the doubts
that I initially had with respect to
Schmitz Cargobull France have been
dispelled,” company boss Patrice
Depaeuw is happy to admit. “At
work. Legally prescribed tests are
also carried out by external testing
fleet: coil semitrailers, efficient load
securing equipment as standard,
various versions of tail lifts, as well
as the different types of body with
Last but not least, the positive experience
acquired by Depaeuw with
the trailers from the Münsterland has
now led to the FLO group also using
vehicles bearing the blue elephant
symbol. Recently the FLO members
were able to see for themselves the
advantages of the Schmitz Cargobull
trailers while attending a congress in
Turkey. “We found that safety, quality
and the environment are values
which Schmitz Cargobull shares with
the FLO group,” explains Patrice Depaeuw.
“The environmental aspect
has become increasingly significant
for our industry over the course of the
last few years – as we have seen in
the design of trailers and as Schmitz
Cargobull impressively demonstrated
during the last IAA in Hanover!”
Patrice Depaeuw has increasingly
turned his attention to environmental
protection. “One of
our concerns must be to show by
means of a strong communication
policy and citizens’ initiatives
that road transport is important,
safe and environmentally friendly!”
Hard work and commitment pay off! When Erich Winkler founded his transport service
in 1990 he knew that it would not be easy. Today he offers a comprehensive service for
his customers with a modern vehicle fleet and wide-ranging logistics services.
The success of my company can
only be ensured in the long term
with hard work, reliability and clever
economic management,“ explains
Erich Winkler. “As a transport company
in the highly competitive logistics
industry you are involved in a risky and
fast moving business.“ The transport
and logistics service provider from
Oberhaching has recognised that the
key to success is the use of state-ofthe-art
technology. “My aim is to provide
our customers with the uncomplicated,
efficient and punctual transport
of goods. Winkler specialises in the
transport of temperature-controlled
goods throughout bavaria and neighbouring
Austria. The vehicle fleet,
which currently contains 26 refrigerated
and frozen food vehicles, is right
up to date. The services on offer range
from a fast Mercedes Sprinter with six
pallet storage places and a payload of
1 tonne, through various 7.5, 12, 18
and 25 tonners to the long-distance
truck/trailer combination with 33
storage places and a payload of
24 tonnes.
Long before it was required by the
market, Winkler had all vehicles fitted
with a real-time temperature monitor-
ing system. “This gives us the opportunity
of complying with our obligation
to document the transport refrigeration
data but also means that our customers
can check the transport temperature
of their goods at any time via an
Internet platform.“ besides the continuous
monitoring of the articles being
transported, the professional logistics
company also puts its faith in its highly
motivated employees, who undergo
permanent vocational training. In order
to add a further aspect to the transport
services, Erich Winkler recently
expanded his operations to include a
large cold warehouse which can accommodate
up to two complete loads.
“With the expansion we can offer our
customers everything from transport
to storage from a single source.“
The latest vehicle fleet expansion
comprises six new Euro 5 trucks from
Mercedes-benz. “The latest vehicles
are not only more reliable,“ says vehicle
fleet manager Ralf Schumann.
“They are also the ideal supplementations
to our fleet in terms of cost
effectiveness.“ For their latest purchases
ChelyabTransAvto with Reliable Partner
ChelyabTransAvto was established
in May 2001 as a forwarding
department of the firm
“Avtotrading“. The largest transporter
of groupage cargo in Russia today
began with 20 tractors and trailers
from the Minsk Automobile Works
(MAZ). As freight volumes grew
quickly, the management of the company
considered expanding the vehicle
fleet. Within a short time a further
100 vehicles had been purchased.
Now the company turned to foreign
manufacturers. At the end of 2005 the
vehicle fleet had grown to 120 saddle
mount combinations, which heralded
in a new era in the company‘s
development.
At the time the company also set
off in a new direction which was to
prove important: after the worldwide
logistics provider DHL decided to use
ChelyabTransAvto as a cooperation
partner for freight traffic within Russia,
semitrailers suitable for DHL‘s requirements
had to be procured for the
new tractors. As is standard practice
at ChelyabTransAvto, the company
chose the best solution available:
the first ten Schmitz Cargobull S.KO
COOL semitrailers were ordered.
During the first year of operation
it was not only the high degree
of reliability of the semitrailers which
became apparent: due to their innovative
technology the S.KOs also
stood out with their clear economic
advantages! Finally further contracts
were concluded in November 2006
for the supply of S.PR flatbed semitrailers.
The first batch of 40 semitrailers
reached Chelyabinsk in January
2007. A further 42 followed during
the course of the year. In the following
year the vehicle fleet was supple-
“Recently we bought three S.KO COOL
refrigerated semitrailer vehicles, three
tractor units with box body (M.KO) and
one trailer (A.KO),“ explains the vehicle
fleet manager. “We are very satisfied
with the products as far as quality
and workmanship are concerned.“
According to Schumann a further
important reason for the purchase of
the „cool“ FERROPLAST vehicles is
the good service: “We work together
with a contractual partner who maintains
our bodies and trailers within the
short time window in which they are
not in use – because we work on two
shifts seven days a week and therefore
can‘t afford any breakdowns!“ In order
to be able to ensure that the vehicles
will continue to run perfectly in the future,
Winkler has taken out full service
agreements for the entire vehicle fleet.
“besides our very good experience
with Cargobull Parts & Services with
respect to maintenance and repairs,
we also decided to purchase the trailer
and semitrailer containers through Cargobull
Finance,“ vehicle fleet manager
Ralf Schumann goes on. “They made
us a very good offer and it was also
much easier for us to speak to only
one partner and nevertheless get an
Fully committed to service – quality in the logistics chain from the very
beginning!
mented by a further 60 trailers made
by Schmitz Cargobull. “In terms
of cost-effectiveness the Schmitz
Cargobull products are currently
without equal,“ company manager
Michail Shpakov explains the reason
for selecting Cargobull products.
“With their hot-dip galvanised frames
the trailers are resistant to corrosion
and extremely durable. The good
price/performance ratio is our reason
for remaining loyal to Schmitz
Cargobull and putting our faith in
Schmitz Cargobull in the future when
expanding our vehicle fleet,“ Shpakov
goes on.
Due to its many years of experience
as a transport service provider
for industrial and commercial goods,
ChelyabTransAvto has been able
to significantly expand its radius of
action and has established regular
goods transport between numerous
Russian regions. The transport routes
more or less cover the entire European
section of Russia. Every day
more than 1,400 of the company‘s
own and rented flatbed and refrigerated
vehicles, as well as tractor-trailer
combinations, are in use. Almost 170
of these are Schmitz Cargobull trailers
of various designs.
With their wide-ranging experience of
road haulage, ChelyabTransAvto can
concentrate all of their energies on
providing an impeccable freight handling
service, while keeping freight
charges to a minimum and offering
their customers the highest possible
levels of convenience.
First-class service, optimum use
of transport capacities, professional
technical solutions and reliability during
all stages of transport – these
fundamental principles makes the
Russian transport company one of
the leading service providers in the
Russian transport industry. As a result
the company has all of the conditions
in place to offer its customers
solutions which are second to none
in terms of price, quality and speed
for all distances and types of freight
transport.
When considering the further development
of ChelyabTransAvto, owner
Oleg Vasilyev and company manager
Michail Shpakov see the most important
criteria for the future success of
the company in improving customer
service, expanding the company‘s
own vehicle fleet, shortening transport
times and reducing costs for the
logistics services. O. Leuer
Customers coming from various
area for which the CTC is responsible,
nine field workers look after the
customers and provide them with
support with the purchase of new
and second-hand trailers. Over an
area of 15,000 m² the 10-strong team
at CTC South offers customers professional
all-round advice on every
product and service, such as Cargobull
Finance, Cargobull Telematics,
Cargobull Parts and Services
and Full Service Agreements. As is
the case with all other CTCs, Hermann
Grünewald‘s team pursues a
strategy of “everything from a single
deal quickly with the concerns of all
of their customers. Moreover, for the
customers of the CTC there are also
around 150 second-hand vehicles
available for immediate collection,
an offer which the many Eastern
CARGObULL NEWS · MAY/2009
Robust quality which pays for itself in the long term.
Ahead by a
Nose in France
Cargobull News (CN) spoke to Jacques Vincourt,
Market Management South-West Europe, about the
successful market developments in 2008 and the introduction
of the S.KI family of semitrailer tippers.
CN: “What form does the success
of the S.KI take in terms of
figures and what are the reasons for
this success?”
J. Vincourt: “In 2008 slightly more
than 3,970 semitrailer tippers were
newly registered in France. Within the
framework of global growth, Schmitz
Cargobull were able to achieve second
position with respect to market
shares. This success is certainly attributable
to the many alternative solutions
which the S.KI offers in comparison
to the other solutions already
on the market: a modular product
range composed of optimised materials
and constructional elements – for
example the types of steel or aluminium
alloys selected due to their ideal
properties. The axles and hydraulic
components installed by Schmitz
Cargobull in the vehicles are standard
market products and have proven
their reliability over the long term.”
CN: “How would you characterise
the S.KI family?”
J. Vincourt: “As very light, functional
and stable – but also aesthetically
pleasing – semitrailer tippers!
Examples from this family are our
semitrailer tippers with smooth aluminium
box bodies as well as consisting
of abrasion-resistant b450
steel, of which we alone have been
able to sell 410 examples – a really
disproportionate increase. A genuine
all-round talent is the S.KI which can
be used as a “grain transporter“ due
to its length, which also has a box
body made of aluminium and which
we also offer in steel for additional
types of use such as the transport of
special waste. We have been able to
sell 120 of these special versions.”
CN: “An S.KI is not necessarily
the cheapest product. Haven‘t customers
sometimes hesitated before
investing in the upmarket price
category?”
J. Vincourt: “That is correct; an S.KI
is good value for money, but never
cheap! but the customers have also
invested in the upmarket price category
because this provides them
with a very high level of equipment.
You only have to think of the air suspension,
disc brakes and the possibility
of lifting the trailer when moving
slowly – even if it is laden. In addition,
the S.KI offers the EbS electronic
braking system and the RSP
skid and tilting protection system –
not forgetting a final coating of paint
of automobile quality which obviates
the need for aggressive products for
unpainted aluminium materials!”
CN: “It has evidently not taken long
to build up the trust of the French
customers?”
J. Vincourt: “Some of our customers
began to acquire experience of our
products as long ago as 2004/2005.
Looking back the decision in
favour of the S.KI vehicles made
at the Gotha works has definitely
been worthwhile. In addition to the
high quality of the vehicles, Schmitz
Cargobull also offer their customers
other advantages in the form of a
sizeable service package. Financing,
full service, trailer telematics and a
comprehensive pan-European service
partner network were important
reasons for deciding in our favour
again when making additional investments.”
CN: “The works in Gotha has also
developed into an important supplier
in the field of S.CF container
chassis?”
J. Vincourt: “At least there has never
been a phase of stagnation for the
container chassis. Last year this segment
grew by almost 32%! Schmitz
Cargobull now have a market share
of 9%! With these products I am
definitely not afraid of being unsuccessful
in 2009!” (ck)
The TrailerCompany.
Combi Box vehicle
The rail-transportable S.KO EXPRESS dry freight box trailer combines a maximum payload
with multifunctional interior equipment.
After the S.CS and S.KO COOL,
the dry freight box trailer is now
also travelling by rail in the form of
the S.KO EXPRESS, which combines
the best of both worlds – the
bolted and galvanised MODULOS ®
chassis of the S.CS curtainsider
semitrailers and the robust, 30 mmthick
FERROPLAST ® panels, which
are impermeable to vapour diffusion.
Additionally, the “EXPRESS“
can be individually adapted to a
huge range of transport tasks by all
kinds of options.
The first prototype of the railtransportable
S.KO EXPRESS has
now passed its baptism of fire with
a loading test and is now being
handed over to a company which
will mainly transport high-quality
textiles by road, rail and occasionally
by sea. Through the use of a
low driving height and 435/50 R19.5
tyres the designers have been able
to achieve a clear internal height of
2,900 mm (with codification profile
P397 for an axle stand height of
880 mm and pocket wagon T3000).
In spite of additional reinforcements
and equipment for rail transport, as
well as optional ferry equipment,
the unladen weight of the S.KO
EXPRESS is only approx. 8,800 kg
– and can be reduced to 8,530 kg
if certain items of equipment are removed.
A variable cargo space allows the
combination of double-decker loading
equipment with 22 girders and a
total capacity of 67 pallets, plus six
rows of keyhole rails for attaching
telescopable safety/clothes rails.
The 28 millimetre-thick floor plates
can withstand a forklift axle load of
up to 7,100 kilograms and fulfil the
criteria of the strength test according
to DIN/EN 283. As an option, Schmitz
Cargobull can supply the body with a
load securing certificate according to
DIN EN 12642 Code XL. Weight-optimised,
sturdy base coating boards
(300 mm high on the sides, 750 mm
on the front wall) made of steel help
to prevent impact damage from forklift
or lifting trucks.
With its lifting and lowering device,
which is also standard equipment,
the S.KO EXPRESS simplifies
docking on to loading ramps of
various heights. An auto-reset function
automatically sets the correct
height when the vehicle is moving
and thereby prevents damage to the
bellows. As its components have
been tested over a long time, the
rail-transportable S.KO EXPRESS
stands out due to its low life-cycle
costs. The practical and burglar-
resistant equipment makes this vehicle
an inexpensive all-rounder.
Europe Wherever the Road leads
The company, whose head office
is in Prat de Llobregat near
barcelona, has been divided up into
three company divisions: LogicAuto,
which specialises in the transport of
vehicles; LogicPetrol, the specialist
department for fuel transporters, and
LogiCargo. The last of these sections
of the company deals with national
and international transport for the
automobile industry and customers
for industrial goods – not forgetting
the electronics industry. The transport
segment of Tradisa Logicargo is
supplemented by warehousing, order
picking and packing.
The Spanish logistics professionals
have a European setup. For example,
Tradisa maintains road transport
routes to Moscow, Helsinki or Vilnius
and travels by ship from Helsinki to
Rome or Tangiers in Morocco! National
branch offices, including those in Madrid,
Valencia and Saragossa, as well
as several international subsidiaries in
Western and Eastern Europe, look after
the interests of the customers.
Since 2004 Tradisa Logicargo has
been a customer of Schmitz Cargobull.
Offering reliable protection to sensitive loads that are in danger of
being stolen
Tradisa Logicargo is one of the largest Spanish transport and logistics providers. The
company, which was founded in 1954, has a vehicle fleet that comprises 400 units and
specialises in contract logistics and transport services. Under the motto “Highest quality,
integrated logistics and every conceivable additional service for the customer“ Managing
Director Jorge Ferraz Sopena integrates all forms of carriers – truck, rail and ship.
M. Iglesias (left) wishes J. F. Sopena
(right) continuing success.
Ferraz Sopena. “The vehicles are optimised
to our requirements with a
hydraulic elevating roof and removable
corner stanchions. These options
allow us to load the vehicle quickly –
even in the case of cargoes which are
very high and wide!“
Tradisa became interested in the
blue elephant brand, which also operates
its own assembly plant in Saragossa,
as a result of a recommendation
and their own extensive testing
of the semitrailers. “Today we have
110 S.CS vehicles in our fleet and are
currently in the process of purchasing
new vehicles – again with the equipment
details which we typically require,“
Jorge Ferraz Sopena continues.
When purchasing the vehicles the
Managing Director takes advantages
of the services offered by Cargobull Finance
because there – as he says himself
– he can obtain everything from a
single source. “However, with respect
to service and maintenance we make
use of our workshop, in which we employee
12 mechanics and perform all
of the necessary work ourselves!“ The
entire fleet is equipped with a telematics
system in order to enable customers
to track their shipments and
simplify their own material planning
processes.
When asked about the selection
of his trailers, Sopena says:
Schmitz Cargobull has developed
into the top specialist for semitrailers
and is able to provide us with all
of the equipment features which our
previous supplier could not. Furthermore,
we focus fully on our customers‘
requirements and Schmitz
Cargobull always react quickly to
our wishes!“ L. Bonasa
The Key to Success is Service
Nowadays services are the decisive factor in the transport industry in particular.
Customers want to be informed at
all times where and in what condition
their cargo is – the latter above
all when sensitive items are to be
transported in temperature-controlled
vehicles. This was also the challenge
faced just over a year ago by Herman
Molitor, Managing Director of the
firm Swift Logistik GmbH from Langenfeld.
He decided in favour of the
trailer telematics system of Cargobull
Telematics GmbH as a problem-solver
and as an important instrument for
achieving customer loyalty.
CN: “Why did you select trailer
telematics for your company?”
Molitor: “I clearly had to come to a
decision concerning what was more
important for me and my customers
– knowing where the cargo and driver
were currently located or resorting to.
Where the driver is I can find out by
means of a telephone call. but my customers
should also know what condition
their goods are in independently
of what I tell them, and that can only
be guaranteed by a trailer telematics
system. With this it is possible to carry
out fast and uncomplicated assessments
of the temperature and routes
taken and make these available every
day to the customer by e-mail. That is
why it was not difficult to take a decision
in favour of telematics.” These
are precisely the req uirements that are
fulfilled by the trailer telematics system
of Cargobull Telematics GmbH. Today
locating the position of a cargo is only
the start. Depending on customer requirements,
it is also possible to provide
temperature reports and position
histories, as well as additional messages
based on individual customer
configurations such as when vehicles
enter or leave specific regions. It is
also possible to provide temperature
reports and position histories as well
as additional messages based on individual
customer configurations such
as when vehicles and released regions
words an ideal tool for just-in-time
planning.
CN: “What advantages does the
system offer you in addition to
trailer location?”
Molitor: “Telematics greatly facilitates
our work. Not only do we save
on manpower, but working resources
are also optimised. Instead of having
to telephone every driver individually
in the morning in order to receive status
messages, thanks to telematics I
receive all the relevant information for
the entire vehicle fleet with one click
of the mouse almost instantaneously
– a real time saving which is positively
reflected in my operating costs.”
CN: “What about if something doesn’t
work, what help do you receive then?”
Molitor: “Of course that happens be -
cause wherever people work and technology
is programmed by people, mistakes
can always happen. but I am very
satisfied with the escalation levels at
CbT: besides the professional contacts
who work directly in the technical support
department at Cargobull Telematics,
the service partners of SCb are also
integrated into the network. As a result
I can coordinate my routes if repairs are
Always well-informed: With trailer telematics the load and the status of
the vehicle can be permanently monitored.
needed – in accordance with the locations
of the service partners.” For
Hermann Molitor the trailer telematics
system of Cargobull Tele matics
GmbH has proven to be the ideal
standardised industry solution that can
be deployed universally. The firm
Swift Logistik GmbH is only one example
of how trailer telematics can be
efficiently used. And trailer telematics
are not only ideal for forwarding agents
with refrigerated vehicles. Cargobull
Telematics offers the perfect package
for every type of vehicle. The customer
can always choose between options
that are relevant to his vehicle. For
mixed fleets, rental companies and
trailer pool operators in particular there
is a single telematics system on offer for
use across all types of vehicle. As Cargobull
Doubling Up Brings Green Benefits
to Norfolkline
Norfolkline operates logistics services from locations across Europe, providing ambient
and refrigerated transportation of packed goods by road, rail, and sea to a wide variety
of clients.
To keep pace with growth within
the chilled and frozen distribution
side of its business, the company
is currently expanding its refrigerated
trailer fleet and, as part of this
process, has recently taken delivery
of a number of new reefer semitrailers
S.KO COOL and placed additional
orders for extra vehicles with
Schmitz Cargobull. The trailers will
work out of Norfolkline’s belfast facility
and will be used to service several
large food retail customers on
routes throughout the UK and Ireland.
With environmental concerns
a key consideration for Norfolkline
and its clients, the company approached
Schmitz Cargobull to produce
a trailer that could increase load capacity
and reduce environmental impact.
“We wanted a trailer that would
enable us to enhance our service to
our customers and make a positive
contribution towards road congestion
and the environment,” explains
Mervyn McIntyre, Equipment Manager,
Norfolkline. by increasing the
trailer’s height to 4.65 metres (with
an interior floor to roof height of 3.3
metres) and incorporating a double
deck storage system, Schmitz Cargobull
has allowed Norfolkline to
carry a higher volume of palletized
loads within the same overall vehicle
footprint. As a result, Norfolkline
has been able to reduce the number
of journeys that it makes while still
providing the highest levels of service
to its customers. The trailers
– which feature the latest Thermo
King SLX fridge unit – have been
built at Schmitz Cargobull’s UK production
facility at Harelaw, close to
Newcastle upon Tyne using Schmitz
bolted and galvanized production
technique. The bolting process removes
Valerius Transport from Sundern-Hachen is a specialist in the
transport of coils. Together with the Picker galvanising plant in
Arnsberg, the company from Upper Sauerland has put a very
special truck on the road.
The inhabitants of the Sauerland
can certainly not be accused of
having a strong desire for self-glorification.
However, if the result is an
attractive tractor-trailer combination
– which will certainly attract a good
deal of attention – a little public relations
is certainly allowed!
“GALVANISED INTO ACTION” is
the suitable title for a trailer creation
which the Valerius transport company
has turned into reality with the
Picker galvanising plant and Schmitz
Cargobull.
Currently the company is celebrating
its 50th anniversary! As long ago
as 1965 the then founder of the company
purchased the first truck-trailer
combination with coil body in North
Rhine-Westphalia. In the meantime
the vehicle fleet has grown to over
30 units. The transport of coils and
long materials – including wood – is
still the main service offered by the
company, which today is managed
by sons Volker and Dirk Valerius.
Large heated logistics areas, powerful
crane systems and trailers which
with special authorisation can manage
coils weighing up to 35 tonnes
bear witness to the orientation of the
company from Sundern-Hachen.
A partner and shipping agent
of Valerius Transport is the Picker
therefore, results in consistently high
product quality and greater production
flexibility. The galvanizing operation,
meanwhile, ensures that there
is no corrosion within the joint when
two parts of the trailer are brought
together. The refrigerated trailer box
units themselves are constructed
using Schmitz Cargobull’s FERRO-
PLAST ® modular steel-skinned panels
to keep loads at the desired
temperature. The easy to clean box
unit makes the trailer particularly
suited for the transport of foodstuffs.
99 per cent of the materials used in
the production process is recyclable
– another important environmental
consideration which influenced
Norfolkline’s purchase decision.
“The new trailers will make an important
contribution to the greening
of our clients’ supply chains,” says
Mervyn McIntyre. Norfolkline has
specified Schmitz Carobull products
for several years. “We have always
some distinctive advertising for
their own company. Even today 20%
of this long-established company is
still owned by the same family – birgit
Picker, the daughter of the company’s
founder, is a divisional manager.
A further 40% belongs to Voigt
and Schweitzer, the company which
also galvanises chassis frame side
members and parts for Schmitz Cargobull
with the Seppeler Group and
the Voigt & Schweitzer Group, Picker
offers a broad range of products
Partnership in
Practice
Szemerey Transport, Fracht- und Speditions AG is the leading
refrigerated cargo logistics and dry freight distributor in Hungary.
For almost 10 years trailers bearing the blue elephant symbol
have been a permanent feature of the company’s vehicle fleet.
Our aim is to be not only a service
provider to our customers.
We want to cooperate, take part in
brainstorming sessions and develop
joint solutions for optimum transport
logistics!“ Lóránd Szemerey has very
specific ideas on the role which he
and his co-workers would like to
play. And the success of the family
concern Szemerey Transport Frachtund
Speditions-AG shows that the
management of the company are on
the right track. The firm‘s foundation
in 1990 as a forwarding company
was followed in 1991 by the purchase
of the first truck – an IFA produced
in East Germany. With the firm formerly
known as SZK Transport Kft.
Lóránd Szemerey purchased 30
RÁbA semi-trailer trucks from Hungarocamion
in 1993 and grew as a
result into a significant player on the
domestic market. Two years later the
qualified technical instructor for vehicle
transport took over the company
alone and changed it into a public
limited company. Today Szemerey is
Hungary‘s market leader for refrigerated
cargo transport and logistics
and one of the most important partners
for dry freight transport. Growth
continues, with annual increases in
turnover of more than 10%. “Today
our vehicle fleet has 300 tractor units,
320 trailers (around 1/3 S.CS and 2/3
S.KO), 250 tandem truck/trailer combinations
and 320 distribution trucks
weighing up to 12 tonnes,“ explains
Lóránd Szemerey with more than a
little pride. The 3,000 square metre
Szolnok.Since 2000 the company
has been using S.CS curtainsider
semitrailers, above all S.KO COOL
semi-trailer box vehicles. “I honestly
don‘t know any more how we came
upon Schmitz Cargobull as a supply
partner at the time. but I knew
that the trailers from Altenberge and
Vreden had a very good reputation!“
explains Lóránd Szemerey looking
back. “We have certainly never re-
gretted the change! There is no other
supplier who could offer us a similarly
high level of quality and service. Just
as we consider our customers to be
our partners, we are also more of a
partner than a customer of Schmitz
Cargobull. The support is excellent!
If difficulties should indeed occur, everything
is clarified personally between
our technical manager and the fieldworker
who is responsible for us.“ In
addition to the purchase of vehicles,
Szemerey takes advantage of almost
the entire range of services offered
by Cargobull Parts & Services and
Cargobull Finance. “When procuring
the vehicles and spare parts, as well
as the service and maintenance agreements,
we place our trust entirely
in the all-round package.“ but for
the purchase of vehicles and spare
parts, as well as the service and
maintenance agreements, we place
our trust entirely in the all-round
package.“
The success of the logistics specialist
is based not only on the unproblematic
vehicle fleet, but also on the
nationwide distribution network with
central material planning. Here all vehicles
are tracked day and night, temperatures
recorded and the drivers
provided with instructions. In addition
to the transport services, Szemerey
also carry out order picking, label-
Vehicles with monitoring package
ling, packaging, registration and dispatch
for their customers. “Reacting
quickly and effectively to changes in
the market environment, striving for
greater success and understanding
growth as more than just a financial
index – these are the important
factors in our corporate culture,“ explains
Lóránd Szemerey. “For us the
most important value is the satisfaction
of our partners and customers.
And because we also want to be satisfied,
we place our trust in trailers
made by Schmitz Cargobull!“
Environmentally Friendly
Combined road-rail transport is the solution for “Green Logistics“ on long-distance journeys.
The specialist freight forwarding company Paneuropa-Rösch has recently been using
refrigerated trailers between northern Germany and northern Italy.
The medium-sized specialist
freight forwarding company
Paneuropa-Rösch has moved
on to pastures new in combined
freight transport across the Alps. Since
the middle of January 2009 the
company has been using refrigerated
trailers made by Schmitz Cargobull
between northern Germany and Verona
in the north of Italy, where at the local
combined freight transport transshipment
terminal the company has
its own branch office to ensure that
the trailers are rolled out throughout
Italy. Transport by rail requires approximately
23 hours.
Managing Partner Carsten Hemme
invested a good 18 months in preparing
the project. The entrepreneur is
an advocate of combined road-rail
transport, handling more than 13,800
combined freight transport consignments
in 2008. With Schmitz Cargobull
he has found what he calls the
“ideal manufacturer“ of refrigerated
trailers suitable for combined freight
transport. The type of semi-trailer
which Hemme decided to purchase
comes from the standard S.KO range
of the innovative manufacturer. Ho-
wever, for the new tasks numerous
technical adaptations were made
to the semi-trailer. One example:
the trailer ordered by Paneuropa is
equipped with the most powerful refrigerating
machine currently made by
the firm Thermo King, which is nevertheless
fully suitable for rail transport.
This is the unit with the designation
“SLX 400“. The refrigerating machine
stands out not only due to its excellent
cooling capacity, but also its robustness.
For example, the manufacturer
guarantees that the cooling unit
can stand up to severe impacts during
shunting. Thermo King also developed
the two-way telematics system.
This enables the carrier to remain in
permanent contact with the cooling
unit and if necessary intervene via the
Internet in the case of technical faults.
And Hemme is pleased to report that
this technology has already passed its
test with flying colours in two cases
since the introduction of this transalpine
route. For the coordination of the
refrigerated transport Paneuropa has
recruited a new employee with experience
in this segment. The first step
in the new era of refrigerated road-
rail transport was undertaken with
20 trailers. However, that is not the
end of the story, confirmed Carsten
Hemme: “We are currently negotiating
a second package with a further 20
rail-transportable refrigerated trailers.“
There certainly is enough demand. by
the beginning of April Paneuropa had
already handled 450 refrigerated semitrailer
journeys between northern Germany
and South Tyrol. Hemme: “Our
customers are satisfied.“ It is above
all the food sector which has shown a
good deal of interest.
but Paneuropa boss Hemme does
not worry even if there is not enough
refrigerated cargo for a return journey.
“If necessary the refrigerated trailers
can also be loaded with normal
goods which do not require temperature
management.“ The experienced
entrepreneur considers the medium
and long-term perspectives for refrigerated
semi-trailer transport by rail
to be excellent. “The topic of „green
logistics“ is “in“ in the industry. “Combined
transport on long-distance
routes makes a clear contribution towards
environmental protection.“
Solutions for Combined Road Rail Transport
The rail-transportable S.KO COOL
with meat hanging system owned
by the Paneuropa freight forwarding
company is specifically adapted to
the requirements of combined roadrail
transport. The varying axle distances
between the first and second
axles (1,410 mm) and between the
second and third axles (1,310 mm)
guarantee wheel loads that also
comply with the law in the case of the
44 tonne gross vehicle weights which
are usual in combined road-rail
transport. An additional mudguard
between the front axles provides optimum
spray protection in the rain.
Extra cross-bracings between the
longitudinal chassis beams guarantee
the additional stability required during
railway operations. The vehicles have
German railway equipment for pocket
wagons of type T2000/3000, as well
as SDGGMRSS. The support jack has
been moved to a height of 2,600 mm.
The combined road-rail transport
equipment is supplemented by low
side collision protection and MRH2
air suspension with a splitter, which
effectively prevents bellows damage
during craning. In order to avoid damage
to the lighting equipment the
side marker lights are attached to a
console on the head frame. A brake
shoe holder behind the unit and the
bolted-on underride protection provide
enough free space on the wagon.
Paneuropa are having the new S.KO
COOL vehicles fitted with a tracking
telematics system, which in addition
to controlling the cooling unit during
rail transport also monitors the filling
levels of the plastic tanks of the unit.
