The Kids First
Awareness 21st Century
Community Learning
Center recently held a
block party to help celebrate
its 10th anniversary.
on Saturday, April 14.
“It went great,” said
Cindy Hawkins, the executive
director of Kids
First. “It was a great day.”
According to Hawkins,
the event drew participants
from a number of
area organizations, including
Hunter Street Baptist
Church in Hoover and the
Lovelady Center in
Birmingham. There were
also kids from a publichousing
complex in Clay-
Chalkville.
“We had almost 300
people there,” said
Hawkins. “We had about
70 to 80 kids from the center,
plus other family and
friends.”
During the event, the
kids played a variety
games, including several
that were donated by a
local Boy Scout.
“He made 12 handmade
carnival games. He did a
wonderful job, and then he
left them for us,” said
Hawkins. “Then Hunter
Street came out with their
kids, and they brought a
lot of games and activities.
It was just a day of family
and friends to celebrate
Kids First being in operation
for ten years.”
Another highlight of the
day was the dedication of
the center’s new bus. The
new bus was gifted to the
center by a number of local
parties, including the First
United Methodist Church
of Alabaster, Asbury
United Methodist Church,
and Ann and Bob Shiller.
According to Hawkins,
State Sen. Cam Ward and
Rep. Mike Hill helped provide
funding for the vehicle.
"I’m always proud to be
great organization as Kids
Ward. “I am
glad the state
was ablje to
“We
appreciate
them doing
that” said
Hawkins. “
That bus is going to be
used to go pick up our
kids, especially in the wintertime.
It’s hard for them
to get there in the winter
when it’s cold, We could
not do what we do without
the help of people who
love our children as much
as I do.”
The event also featured
a clothing giveaway to
help those in need.
Hawkins said she typically
tries to tie a community
benefit in with the fun.
“I try to hit the needs of
the community, along with
doing the celebration,”
Hawkins said they’ll
