CITYFEST CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY
This year’s CityFest
marks the 10th annual installment
of the city’s music festival,
and with the ongoing
success of the event, it seems
well on its way to ten more.
CityFest was originally
created in 2003 to celebrate
Alabaster’s 50th birthday.
Since then it’s grown into one
of the area’s most popular
events, drawing huge attendance
numbers and nationally-renowned
musical acts.
Last year, it drew an estimated
60,000 people to Municipal
Park.
"It is hard to believe that
the festival has grown like it
has,” said Adam Moseley, the
president of the Alabaster
Arts Council, the group that
produces CityFest.
According to Moseley, the
event’s success is attributable
to the many people and spon-
sors who invest their time
and money into the event.
“It could not have happened
without the small
group of organizers on the
Arts Council that spend
hundreds of hours each
year to plan this event and
the hundreds of volunteers
that make it happen,” said
Moseley. “In addition, it has
grown like it has thanks to
our wonderful sponsors
that put their investment
into this community.
Without them, we would
not be here.”
Over the years, the
CityFest lineup has featured
everything from popular
country to modern rock and
everything in between. A
few of the more memorable
acts have included the
Fabulous Thunderbirds
(2004), Foghat (2006), the
Whiten Your Teeth and
Help a Child
From March until June, we are offering teeth
whitening services at a reduced
price through Smiles for Life Foundation
100% of the teeth whitening
proceeds go directly to children’s
charities. 50 percent of that payment
will be given to Camp Smile A Mile
www.campsam.org which is a
non-profit organization in Alabama
for children who have or have had
cancer. Year round programs are
provided for the campers and their
family at no cost. The remainder is
given to a children’s charity
approved by Smiles for Life
Foundation. Everybody wins!
Smiles for Life is a children’s charity organization set up through members of the Crown Council,
to be the best yet,
with popular bands
Everclear and
the festivities.
“No other festival
in Alabama has this
type of music lineup
said Moseley. “It
CITY LEADERS...
David Frings
Mayor
I want to begin this month by updating you on the
progress that we continue to make toward the paving of
streets in subdivisions that have been abandoned by developers.
We either have received or should have received
bond proceeds for paving the streets in three more subdivisions
by the publication of this issue. These projects
include Grandview, Golden Meadows, and the Grove. I
anticipate that we will be able to have the paving and road
repairs completed in these subdivisions by this August. We
continue our work to secure the outstanding bond funds on
all of the other subdivisions and we will present proposals
for paving these projects to the City Council as the bond
companies honor our claims. I want to thank everyone that
lives in these subdivisions for your patience during this
long process. We have been in various stages of addressing
these roads for the better part of three years and our persistence
in finally beginning to pay off with newly paved
streets. I will not give up on this quest until all of these
subdivisions are repaired and paved. In addition to paving
in abandoned subdivisions, we are preparing for our annual
paving projects this summer in our long established subdivisions.
These projects are scheduled by our public
works department based on the amount of deterioration of
the asphalt. We typically spend approximately $200,000.00
re-surfacing existing city roads each budget year. These
funds are derived from our gasoline tax so it is important to
purchase as much fuel as possible in our city limits so that
your dollars pave our streets and not those in another city.
I usually do not discuss events that are held in other
cities because we want to use this venue to promote
Alabaster. I am going to break that rule in this issue
because I believe that this upcoming event that will be held
in Ray’s Arena in Jemison, Alabama is something we all
need to be educated about and support. The event is the
Rescue 1 Rodeo which raises money to increase awareness
and prevent sex trafficking of children around the world. I
met with a group of ladies from Amazing Grace Worship
Center in Alabaster that are working very hard to make this
event is a success. I have to admit that until I met with this
team, I had heard about the sex trafficking of children but I
did not know the extent of the problem or that people located
in Alabama and other southeastern U. S. states are often
involved in the transportation and abuse of these children.
The children are typically sold into slavery from Southeast
Asia or Eastern Europe. They range in age from four to
fourteen years! Listening to the stories told by these ladies
made me sick, angry, and very sad! I encourage everyone
to educate themselves on this issue and consider supporting
Rescue 1 by attending the rodeo in Jemison on August 24
and 25 at Ray’s Arena in Jemison. Let’s all do our part to
stop this trafficking of children.
Spring rushes by so fast and now it’s summer. But it
also means it’s time for CityFest on Saturday, June 2nd.
Celebrating 10 years of bringing top notch entertainment
to the city, CityFest has become one of the premiere events
in the state. By day there is music but also lots of things
for Kids to do with plenty of games and various types of
“moonwalks.” And there’s the Lowe’s workshop where
children are carefully supervised and produce actual projects
they can take home that fill them with accomplishment
and pride in a job well done.
Of course, playing hard can work up a hunger and a
thirst and there are plenty of vendors on hand offering all
types of food for meals and snacks plus cold drinks and
frozen snacks to help keep everyone cool.
Music plays throughout the day but really gears up
toward late afternoon and into the evening culminating in
performances by rock group Everclear and country group
Lonestar.
For 10 years the best free party in Alabama has just
gotten better and better, but it doesn’t happen without the
hard work and dedication of a lot of people at the
Alabaster Arts Council, city employees, volunteers and
many others who work so hard to make this a real success.
Thanks to everyone for your hard work, and we all look
forward to more years of this great free party.
Congratulations to the winners of the ACCC
Tournament. We are so proud to host this softball tournament
and welcome these hard-working players to our city
to have fun and enjoy the city’s hospitality.
If you’ve got little ones at home for the summer, be
sure to check out the Library’s summer programs. Kicking
off in early June, there are all kinds of activities plus prizes
for reading books. It’s a great way to have fun and
encourage kids to keep reading. Statistics show that children
who read consistently over the summer have less loss
of learning from the previous school year and keeps them
sharp and focused for the next year. And it’s fun!
Congratulations to Dr. Melanie Shores for being chosen
as the first President of the Alabaster School Board and
to Mr. Ty Quarles as Vice President. It’s a great challenge
to create a city school system from scratch but I have no
doubt that the Board is dedicated to a successful outcome
for the children of Alabaster.
Wear a hat, use sunscreen, drink plenty of fluids
because it’s summer. And, oh yes, have fun!
Ward 1
Progress continues in Ward 1. Thank you to the Alabama Department of Transportation for working
with me and recently installing new Pedestrian signs along Hwy 31 between I-65 and Hwy 119. This
area is a safety concern for residents frequently crossing in this area. These signs will serve as a temporary solution until
further safety measures can be taken by the State.
Thank you to all the residents who attended the recent Simmsville Action Community meeting. We discussed
upcoming projects, projects in progress and new ideas to further enhance our community. These meetings continue to
be both extremely effective and informative.
The work on several abandoned and unsafe properties is moving forward. Several local volunteer groups, along
with the City, are helping with this major project. Because of legalities the process is gradual, but the results will make
a definite difference in our community.
Make plans for you and your family to attend the 10th annual Alabaster CityFest. Thank you to the Alabaster Arts
Council, the City of Alabaster and the hundreds of volunteers who make this event a major success. The event is free!
CityFest 10 is just around the corner. June 2nd will be the big day this year, so be sure to mark your calendar for
that Saturday to "party on." Lone Star and Everclear are the headliners, and it sounds like it will be another great show. Thanks again to
all those who work so hard to bring us a good time.
With school being out for the summer, it is even more important to SLOW DOWN when driving. I am horrified by the speeds at
which some vehicles travel in our neighborhoods. One of my neighbors has been monitoring traffic and the results of his hard work
are amazing. People completely disregard speed limits, school zones, and other warnings of potential danger. When schools let out for
the summer, it becomes even more important to slow down and be alert as you drive through town. It could save a life.
Finally, it is time to get the family out to one of our parks for quality time in the sunshine and fresh air. The dog park should be open
by the middle of July, and it will provide a golden opportunity to bring the family out for exercise together. I am guilty of spending
way too much time inside and not getting the vitamins offered by direct sunlight, so we plan to hit the parks big time this summer. Join
us!!! Grace and peace, Bob
The Ward 3 council place is currently open. The vacancy will be
filled by appointment of the City Council for the remainder of the
current term. If you have any questions, call City Hall at 664-6800.

As another school year has ended, I would like to congratulate and thank the parents and students
who will be moving up or perhaps on to the next phase of their life. Whether or not we participate in formal education
at the next level, I believe we can all agree that it is the most important opportunity we can give our children. I am
pleased to hear of the progress our Alabaster Board of Education is making towards that goal. Please join me in giving
them your full support as we work to make room for them in our newsletter.
The Dog Park is a running a little behind schedule due to some poor soil that has to be replaced before construction
of the building can begin. We are told it will move the opening back to sometime in July. The Library addition however
is on schedule. The next step will be to open up the connecting wall between the library and the new addition. That will
require that they temporarily close the children’s section of the library. The process should not take long and it will
mark one of the final steps towards completion of the project.
Finally I look forward to seeing everyone at CityFest on June 2nd. The Alabaster Arts Council has a great lineup
scheduled and it should prove to be another successful event, with fun for all age groups and families. The annual
event will draw thousands of people from outside our city and I know your gracious hospitality towards them is a big
reason why it is so successful. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you – until next time Keep in Touch!
Ward 6
It’s been a busy month of May for our Parks and Rec Department. They have successfully navigated
another baseball/softball/soccer season. Not to mention, they did a great job of hosting the ACCC Softball Tournament
at Veterans Park. If you get a chance, please let them know how much you appreciate their efforts. With close to 1,000
kids in Spring sports, its challenging to meet every demand, scheduling conflict, etc., but I personally believe our Parks
& Rec Department does a tremendous job. Now that City Sports have come to a close they will immediately shift their
focus to the task of preparing Municipal Park for the 10th Annual City Fest. If you had the opportunity to visit our
Parks for a game this Spring, I hope you purchased something from the Concession Stand. Our Concessions are run by
the Alabaster Sports & Entertainment Foundation. This is a non profit group that takes those proceeds and puts them
back into our Athletic Programs at THS. Since ASEF took over our Concessions 3 years ago, we have not fielded any
complaints, and they have contributed close to $90,000 over the past 3 years to THS athletic programs. Thank you
ASEF, parents & students that take the time to work the Concessions and give back to our programs! Lastly, I wanted
to say a big thank you to the Alabaster Arts Council. This year marks the 10 year anniversary of City Fest. What a
tremendous event that allows us to showcase our community. Make sure to come out and support this great event on
If you travel on Fulton Springs Road from Hwy 119 to Hwy 31, you probably noticed the new traffic
lights at the intersection on Hwy 31. I would like to thank our City Administrator, George Henry,
for his help in making this happen. This is a VERY dangerous intersection, and we’ve had multiple serious accidents
here over the years so hopefully the new lights will help. We actually planned for awhile now for the intersection to
cut straight through from Fulton Springs Rd., across old Hwy 31 and the private property there directly to “new” Hwy
31, eliminating the little “detour” at the end. However, for multiple reasons, mostly financial, it has not happened. The
developers of the new Alabaster Exchange have verbally committed to helping us out with that straightening project
whenever that comes together. The lights will be moved to the new intersection at that point. The idea is to create
another major access route from South 119 to the interstate and the shopping centers, taking some of the load off 119.
Ideally, all of Fulton Springs Rd. would be widened as well. Kent Dairy Rd. would continue past the Post Office and
connect with Fulton Springs Rd. at some point. I know the County wants to do this (it’s a county road) but, as is the
case more often than not, it takes a lot of money. Anyway, this new band aid will help those of us in the southern part
of Alabaster who risk our vehicle and life every day trying to shoot across that intersection on our way to I-65.
Mr. Henry is also trying to work his magic at another dangerous intersection at Hwy 80 and Hwy 119 where we have
been trying for years to get a signal. The wheels of government are semi-rusty sometimes. See you at CityFest.
Detective Ray usually
works eight to five unless
he is working on something
he feels the need to finish
up, and is on call every fifth
week twenty-four hours a
day. Crimes in Alabaster
generally involve burglaries,
theft of property or identity
theft. Randy states that
2011 was very unusual as
the department dealt with
four murders.
Randy’s job satisfaction
comes from knowing he has
helped someone or that he
has assisted getting someone
back on the right track.
He had just notified an
eleven year old girl that her
department. He states that
the ten people in the
Criminal Investigations
Department work together
as family, all striving for the
same goal. Randy, who
does not hesitate to say he
is Christian and attends
Church of the Highlands,
says he believes that it was
God’s plan that he be in law
enforcement.
When asks how real-life
detective work compares
with what is seen on television,
Randy responds,
“Television has it 40 to 60
percent correct. You cannot
tell what a person is made
of by just riding around, listening
to the commentary.
The way to know a person
is to get in a tight spot with
that individual and see the
response to a crisis situation.”
Detective Randy Ray works for
the Alabaster Police Dept.
Katy, Randy’s wife, is
very supportive of his work
as she comes from a law
enforcement family. Her
grandfather is Jessie
Sprayberry, who retired from
the Birmingham Police
Department and then became
Police Chief of Tarrant.
When not tracking down
criminals or appearing in
court, Randy focuses on his
sons, Brandon, thirteen, and
Tyler, one. As time permits,
Randy will occasionally slip
off to Lay Lake to wet a line
and maybe catch a fish or
two.

MAKING IT HAPPEN...
For shoppers in
search of an eclectic
assortment of items,
at very affordable
prices, the Royal
Market in Alabaster
may be just the place.
Located conveniently
in Elliotsville Plaza
(beside Kumon Math
and Learning Center),
the Royal Market specializes
in unique
consignment items,
like home accessories,
clothing, and furniture.
“We carry one-ofa-kind
items, like homemade
soaps and candles,”
said Lacy Cost, who owns
the store with her husband
Al. “We carry all kinds of
stuff.”
Since the Royal Market
first opened in March of
2011, it’s already grown
enough to expand twice.
In fact, it just recently
expanded into a second
part of the retail center.
“We started with 1,400
square feet,” said Lacy
Cost. “We went to 5,000
and then to 7,000. We were
two doors down when we
started.”
In addition to selling
items on consignment, the
store also rents out booths
to vendors who set up
their own merchandise
inside the store.
THE ROYAL MARKET
The Royal Market staff (L-R): Sue Kara Kash,
owners Lacy Cost and Al Cost.
“A booth is like a small
store of an individual. They
rent the space, and they
bring in their own inventory,”
said Lacy. “It’s like
having your own little
small store, inside of another
store.”
Each booth renter is able
to set up their own space
within the store in their
own unique style, which
means one section might
carry antique bottles while
another might specialize in
woodwork. Some renters
will even track what’s selling
to help them figure out
what inventory to stock.
“One guy will come in
and say, what’s selling?
Ashtrays? Lighters?” said
Al Cost. “So when they go
to auctions and stuff, they’ll
go out and buy those items
and bring them in.”
The couple also
sells some of their
own unique inventory,
which they
find in various
places around the
South.
“We’re pickers,”
said Al. “We’re usually
picking on the
weekend.”
With the nation’s
economy still sluggish,
customers are
always eager to
save, and the Royal
Market certainly
helps with that
effort.
“She keeps the prices
affordable for the customers,”
said Al. “There
are antiques in here, but
you’re not paying antique
prices for them.”
For residents who might
be interested in renting a
booth at the Royal Market,
Al said they currently have
limited booth space available.
“We’re limited in what
we’re going to rent out as
booth space, but we’re taking
consigners in all the
time,” said Al.
The Royal Market is
open five days a week,
Tuesday through Saturday.
LONESTAR consists of
Michael Britt – lead guitar, backing
vocals, Richie McDonald –
lead vocals, piano, Keech
Rainwater – drums, Dean Sams
– keyboards
A twenty year anniversary is
cause for celebration, and
Lonestar is marking this career
milestone in more ways than
one. Reunited with original lead
singer Richie McDonald, the
multi-platinum country music
quartet is working hard on a
brand new album and embarking
on an extensive anniversary
tour, with over 90 dates scheduled
in North America alone.
"Twenty years ago, when we
put this little band together to
play in some bars and make a
little money, I dreamed it pretty
good," admits keyboard player
and songwriter Dean Sams. "But
I never dreamed it quite this
good."
Known for merging their
country roots with strong
LONESTAR TO PLAY CITYFEST
melodies and rich vocals,
Lonestar has amassed RIAAcertified
sales in excess of ten
million album units since their
national launch in 1995 and
achieved ten #1 country hits
including "No News," "Come
Crying To Me," and their
crossover smash "Amazed"
(which was also #1 on the
Billboard Hot 100, the first
record since 1983's "Islands in
the Stream" to top both charts).
The band's awards include a
1999 ACM Single of The Year
for “Amazed” (the song also
won the Song of the Year
award) and the 2001 CMA
Vocal Group of the Year.
But it isn't hit records and
trophies that have kept
Lonestar going strong. On the
contrary, says lead singer
Richie McDonald. "Honestly,
through it all, the one thing
that has kept Lonestar around
is that we're just four good old
boys from Texas." All four
members originally hail
from blue collar households,
and place a premium
on the value of hard
work. "No matter how
much success we've had,
it didn't change us as
people."
Originally formed in
Nashville in 1992,
Lonestar played over 500
shows before landing a
recording contract. "We
traveled for two and a
half, maybe three years,
just playing in bars," Britt
recalls. "We were starting from
zero back then." But all those
gigs paid off. By the time they
released their self-titled debut
album in 1995, they already
had an enthusiastic fan base.
Their first single, "Tequila
Talkin'," went Top Ten on the
country charts. Its follow-up
did even better: "No News"
would be the first of many #1
singles for Lonestar.
Lonestar continued to
ascend in the years that followed.
Their third album,
1999's Lonely Grill, was certified
multi-platinum in both
the United States and Canada.
In addition to "Amazed,"
which was #1 with country
audiences for eight weeks in a
row, Lonely Grill yielded three
more #1 country hits: "Smile,"
"Tell Her," and "What About
A BEAUTIFUL SIGHT...
Garden Tip: WEED CONTROL
Use mulch, either chopped hay, black plastic garden sheeting or shredded newspapers, to control weeds. Keep an
extra large black plastic bag full of mulch on hand to smother any emerging weeds you find. Don't let weeds flower
and go to seed. Pull or smother them before they mature and have a chance to become invasive. Mulch also helps conserve
water, allowing you to water less often.
at 3:30 p.m. Adults can
register children, newborn
to 10 years old, for
the challenge before or
after either show.
They’ll receive a large
goody bag as well as a summer activity calendar, a small
gift, and more. Children can be registered any day
between June 4 and July 13. Kids pick a reading goal,
check out and read our library books, and get prizes along
the way to their goal. When they reach their goal, ending
their challenge, they receive a certificate and can enter
prize drawings for a bicycle and other surprises. Own
the Night is the theme of the Young Adults (YAs)
Challenge for kids 11 years
old to 18 years old. They will
have a separate kick off party
on Tuesday, June 5 from 6:00
p.m. to 7:15 p.m. They can
register, get a swag bag, their
program details, and create a
yummy snack with a chef.
During the challenge there will
be entertainers, crafts, drama
and juggling workshops, and
more. Youth services librarian
Frances Smith says that, once
again, everything is free: ‘F’ is
for fun, ‘R’ is for rewarding,
and the double ‘E’ stands for
entertaining and educational. The Summer Challenge
ends with a big Finale on Wednesday, July 18 at 10:30 a.m.
There will be free refreshments and surprises. The goal of
the Summer Challenge is to encourage children to read for
pleasure when they are not in school. Parents and other
caregivers are invited to
participate and help pre-literate
children enjoy books
and develop a love of reading.
To prepare children,
Miss Frances has visited
schools to encourage students
to dream big and
become reading champions.
The 2012 Summer Reading
Program is supported in
whole or in part by the
Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions
of the Library Services and Technology Act as
This year’s CityFest will
once again feature its popular
KidsFest section, which is
an area devoted exclusively
to the kids in the family.
Sponsored by Vic Smith
CPA, P.C., the KidsFest area
gives children a full day of
fun and play at the most
attractive price imaginable:
free.
“We’re having 15 inflatables
for the kids. We’re having
all the same great activities
that the kids love," said
Emily Sykes, vice president
of the Alabaster Arts
Council. “And best of all, it’s
free.”
According to the CityFest
website (www.alabastercityfest.com),
this year’s
KidsFest will feature plenty
KIDSFEST IS FUN!
of great inflatables, plus arts
and crafts, a drum circle,
live music, and a healthy
snack food demonstration
sponsored by Blue Cross
and Blue Shield of
Alabama. This year will
also include some great
face-painting for the kids.
“We’re having some
local art teachers that are
going to come in and do
face-painting for us,” said
Sykes. “We’re happy to
have them.”
Lowe’s will also be on
hand again this year with
its popular “Kids Build It”
workshop, which allows
kids to build a variety of
fun projects under the
supervision of adults. The
workshop is appropriate for
kids ages 4 to 12 and is a
popular station for kids to
visit with their parents.
“They provide activities
for the kids to do which is
great. All the kids seem to
love it,” said Sykes.
The Amazing Flyin’ K9s
will be performing two
shows during the day, one
at 10:30 a.m. and one at 1:30
p.m. Kids will love seeing
the high-flying dogs perform
a variety of great
tricks.
Jim Aycock will be on the
KidsFest stage performing
his fun brand of children’s
music. He’s scheduled to
perform on the hour,
between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Pony rides should be available
again this year as well,
at a small fee.
In past years, KidsFest
has been a big success with
the children, and this year
should be no exception.
“We’re expecting it to be
as big or bigger this year,”
Sykes said.
SENIOR HEALTH & WELLNESS EXPO HELD
On Tuesday, May 1,
the Alabaster Parks and
Recreation Department
hosted its second-annual
Senior Health and Wellness
Expo at the Alabaster
Senior Center. The event
featured some 25 healthrelated
vendors and drew a
number of senior adults
from all around the area.
“It was good,” said
Alicia Walters, the senior
activities manager with the
Parks and Recreation
Department. “We had a
great turnout.”
Baptist Health System
was the primary sponsor
for the event, and it provided
a number of onsite tests
for blood pressure, cholesterol,
and body mass index.
“We were very appreciative
of them for doing all
of the screenings, as well as
for all the other vendors,”
said Walters.
Some of the other vendors
included RSVP,
Harrison Regional Library,
Juice Plus, Cahaba
Wellness, Brooklere
Pharmacy, and MASH,
which sells medical equipment.
The event was organized
with various stations
throughout the Senior
Center and a special colon
exhibit displayed in the
back.
“We had vendors set
up throughout the building,
as well as a large
colon exhibit that they
could walk through outside
and learn more about
colon cancer,” said
Walters.
Walters said she was
very pleased with the
event’s success, which is
now in its second year.
“This was our secondannual
event,” said
Walters. “We have a great
SCHOOL BOARD HOLDS FIRST MEETING
think it went well.”
Shores, who is an assistant
professor of education
at UAB, has a Ph.D. in
educational psychology
from Auburn University.
She’s also been active with
the Creek View
Elementary School PTO,
serving recently as secretary.
Quarles also works for
UAB, serving currently as
the executive director for
facilities administration at
the university. He also has
a law degree from the
University of Alabama
School of Law.
In addition to electing
officials, the school board
also addressed other
important issues during
the meeting, such as training
for the new board
members and the board’s
24 SEE YOU AT CITYFEST JUNE 2 MUNICIPAL PARK! June, 2012
future meeting schedule.
“We hope to decide that
in the next couple of
weeks,” said Shores.
Before finalizing a regular
meeting date, board
members said they wanted
to be sure to avoid any
potential scheduling conflicts
in order to allow
more people to attend.
They also have to determine
the location for future
meetings.
For residents interested
in attending future school
board meetings, the meeting
schedule and location
should be available via the
City of Alabaster website.
“I think the best option
is the Alabaster city website,”
said Shores. “I may
try to contact some of the
principals from some of the
schools and see if we can
work with their PTO or put
it on their marquee and
that way parents can know
if they want to attend.”
Shores said people can
also submit questions or
comments via the City
website.
“There’s a place on the
website to comment, and
then they’ll forward those
to us,” she said.
In fact, Shores said
they’ve already received a
number of emails from residents
addressing various
issues regarding the future
of the school district.
“We have several emails
that came in before we
were appointed, so we’re
holding on to those, and
those are issues we want
to make sure we address at
some time,” said Shores.

LONESTAR TO HEADLINE CITYFEST JUNE 2ND
(CON’T FROM PAGE 12)
Now." The 2001 release I'm
Already There topped the
country album charts, as did
the band's 2003 retrospective
From There To Here: The
Greatest Hits, which produced
yet another #1 single,
"My Front Porch Looking In."
For all their record and
ticket sales, the biggest
accomplishment of the band's
storied career has been witnessing
the impact of
Lonestar songs in the lives of
others. "Music is a very powerful
tool and can help people
going through both good
and bad times," observes
McDonald. Nowhere has this
been more evident than in
the group's performances for
U.S. armed forces stationed
overseas in Iraq and Kuwait,
where classics like "I'm
Already There" have elicited
powerful emotional displays
from men and women
who've put their lives on the
line defending America.
"When you can truly say
that what you do can make a
difference, that it really can
impact somebody's life in a
positive way, that's the greatest
thing," admits Sams.
That timeless appeal transcends
nationality, too. A
recent string of European
dates with Reba McEntire,
Ricky Skaggs, and Little Big
Town found Lonestar thrilling
audiences in England, Ireland,
Switzerland, and Germany. In
a four-star review of their performance
at Wembley Arena,
UK daily The Guardian noted
that Lonestar "got an even
bigger welcome than
McEntire," and praised how
"they reminded us of country’s
greatest strength: picture-painting,
story-based,
tear-your-heart-out lyrics that
are the most direct and lucid
in popular music."
Lonestar is currently hard
at work making a new, selfproduced
album. "It's kind of
a no-brainer for us to come
along at this stage in our
careers and say, 'Yes, we can
produce our own music.'
After all, nobody knows what
Lonestar should sound like
better than Lonestar," says
drummer Keech Rainwater.
"I'm proud that as a band,
collectively, we're smart
enough to know what we
need to do and how to get it
done."
The new material sounds
as thrilling as any of the
band's classics. "The songs
we've already recorded, I'm
more proud of those than
anything we've recorded in
our careers," says guitarist
Michael Britt. "
And not just because
they're new. I feel like we're
as good or better now than
we've ever been." The as-yetuntitled
The Kids First
Awareness 21st Century
Community Learning
Center recently held a
block party to help celebrate
its 10th anniversary.
on Saturday, April 14.
“It went great,” said
Cindy Hawkins, the executive
director of Kids
First. “It was a great day.”
According to Hawkins,
the event drew participants
from a number of
area organizations, including
Hunter Street Baptist
Church in Hoover and the
Lovelady Center in
Birmingham. There were
also kids from a publichousing
complex in Clay-
Chalkville.
“We had almost 300
people there,” said
Hawkins. “We had about
70 to 80 kids from the center,
plus other family and
friends.”
During the event, the
kids played a variety
games, including several
that were donated by a
local Boy Scout.
“He made 12 handmade
carnival games. He did a
wonderful job, and then he
left them for us,” said
Hawkins. “Then Hunter
Street came out with their
kids, and they brought a
lot of games and activities.
It was just a day of family
and friends to celebrate
Kids First being in operation
for ten years.”
Another highlight of the
day was the dedication of
the center’s new bus. The
new bus was gifted to the
center by a number of local
parties, including the First
United Methodist Church
of Alabaster, Asbury
United Methodist Church,
and Ann and Bob Shiller.
According to Hawkins,
State Sen. Cam Ward and
Rep. Mike Hill helped provide
funding for the vehicle.
“We
Hawkins. “
It’s hard for them
the help of people who
The event also featured
a clothing giveaway to
ALAGASCO SEMINAR JUNE 18
Alagasco is offering a
free seminar covering
changes to the new fuel gas
code requirements and
other related issues. The
class will take place
Monday, June 18, from 1
p.m. to 4 p.m., at the
Alabaster Senior Center.
“They approached me
about a year ago about
doing some code changes
classes,” said Alabaster
Building Inspector Glen
Merchant. “Mr. Reggie
Johnson, with Alagasco,
has offered to teach this
class for free.”
According to Merchant,
the class will benefit those
within the City’s Planning
and Zoning Department.
The seminar will allow
them to earn CEU credits,
which are required to
maintain proper certification.
“Most of our guys and
the city engineer can benefit
from the class,” said
Merchant. “You have to
have so much training to say
that you’re up to date. You
have to keep learning stuff
all the time.”
Merchant said he expects
inspectors from neighboring
communities to attend the
seminar as well.
“We hope to have
between 30 and 50 participants,”
said Merchant. “I
have inspectors from all over
the Birmingham area that are
interested.”
Others interested in the
class may include vendors
and contractors.
“Vendors that sell gas
appliances, gas fittings,
they’re going to come
because they need to know
the current changes in standards,”
said Merchant.
“HVAC contractors in the
State of Alabama, they have
to get so many CEUs per
year to keep their heating
and air license. So a lot of
those guys want to come and
get CEU credit hours.”
TMS PHOTO CONTEST RAISES FUNDS
The Thompson
Middle School PTO recently
sponsored a photography
contest to help raise
funds for additional classroom
supplies for the
school. According to Sybil
Owens, vice president of
the PTO, the contest was
open to all Thompson
Middle School students.
The money raised from
the contest was applied
toward five different
teacher grants that the
PTO awarded to TMS
teachers in April. The
theme for the photography
contest was animals.
“The kids could enter a
picture of an animal, be it
a pet or something they
saw out in the wild or
wherever,” said Owens.
Contestants had to pay
a $5 entry fee, and then
once the pictures were
submitted and accepted,
students at the school were
able to “vote” on their
“We had the kids do a
“We had a penny jar, and
Owens said this was the
first time they’d held the
contest. The idea for the
fundraiser arose during
one of their brainstorming
sessions.
“We were just in a PTO
meeting, kind of brainstorming,
and one of the
assistant principals said it
was something they did at
one of his kids’ schools, so
we decided to transfer it to
ours,” said Owens.
Owens said she expects
participation to grow in the
future as the students better
understand the process
for the contest.
“We feel that next year
According to Owens,
the money raised from the
contest was used to help
fund grants for TMS teachers.
The grants were used
to purchase a variety of
classroom supplies,
including an updated
Atlas, new woodshop
materials, and audio
books. The PTO was also
able to donate $200 toward
the purchase of a new
ELMO system, which is a
state-of-the-art projection
system that’s very beneficial
in the classroom.
Throughout the school
year, the PTO conducted a
number of different
fundraisers, like a back-toschool
SKATEBOARD CONTEST ROLLS ON AT THE VET
The City of Alabaster
played host to another successful
skateboard contest
this year as Veterans Skate
Park welcomed the sixth
installment of the Pat
Wachter Bowl Contest.
The contest drew skateboard
enthusiasts from all
over the country to participate
in five different divisions:
Beginner,
Intermediate, Ladies,
Veterans, and Advanced.
Participants came from a
variety of states including
Florida, Tennessee, Georgia,
Ohio, and of course
Alabama.
“It’s going really well,”
said organizer Tim Spinosi
during the contest. “We’ve
got some fantastic skaters.”
For some participants, it
was even a family affair.
Mike Chumley and his
daughter Hannah drove over
from Atlanta to participate in
the event. Mike participated
in the Veterans division,
while Hannah, 13, participat-
ed in the Ladies.
“Hannah’s been here
two times before. This is
her third time, this is my
second,” said Mike.
Hannah in fact won the
Ladies division in 2011. She
said she was happy with
her performance on this
day as well, although the
summer-like temperatures
may have slowed her down
a bit.
“We skated for a really
long time,” she said. “I
think I did good, but
towards the end I got really
hot so I started getting
sloppy with my tricks.”
The Pat Wachter Bowl
Contest was first held in
Alabaster in 2007. It was
held in Madison and
Florence the following
years before returning to
Veterans Skate Park in year
four. Organizers seem
happy to have it back in its
original location here in
Alabaster.
“We were here the first
34 SEE YOU AT CITYFEST JUNE 2 MUNICIPAL PARK! June, 2012
year, then the next
two years we went
to other parks, and
then we came back
here the next year,”
said Spinosi. “This
is our home. It’s
just the best place
to be.”
Spinosi said the
contest’s participants
have all been
happy with the
park’s facilities.
“For a long
time, this was considered
the second-best bowl in the
country,” said Spinosi. “And
it’s held up beautifully too.”
This year’s guest judge
was Bacon Skateboards pro
Tim Johnson. A Georgia
native, Johnson competed in
the very first Pat Wachter
bowl contest back in 2007.
At that time, the contest was
part of the World Cup
Skateboarding circuit, and
Johnson came in second to
Benji Galloway, another
Bacon rider, in the Pro
Division.
Some of this year’s sponsors
included Green
Skateboards, Conspiracy
Skateboards, Bacon
Skateboards, Art of
Skateboarding, Faith Skate
Supply in Birmingham, and
the Barbecutioners.
The Pat Wachter Bowl
Contest also supports the
A.skate foundation, which is
a nonprofit organization
promoting the world of
skateboarding to children
with autism.
DESTINATION IMAGINATION TEAM WINS STATE
A group of Thompson
Middle School students
recently won first place in
a statewide creative competition
in Huntsville
known as Destination
Imagination. Coordinated
by TMS teacher Luci
Tucker, the team scored
the maximum number of
points possible in their
division.
“They participated in
the regional competition
first, and they placed first
in that,” said Tucker.
“Then they went to the
state competition, where
they again placed first.
They also received a special
award called the
Renaissance Award, which
is given if the judges feel
the team has exceptional
talent in a certain area.”
According to Tucker,
Destination Imagination is
a creative problem-solving
competition that’s comprised
of two separate components,
a long-term component and
an instant challenge. For the
long-term component, teams
are tasked with solving a
challenge of their choosing
and presenting their solution
at a Destination Imagination
tournament.
“This year, my group
chose the challenge where
they had to create a movie
and then they had to make a
four-minute trailer they
would present live,” said
Tucker. “So they had to
come up with an actual
movie plot and then make
the preview for it, and that’s
the part they presented.
Within that they had to have
their own original music and
they had to have some technical
effects.”
For the instant challenge,
teams are given a problem to
solve onsite, with no prior
36 SEE YOU AT CITYFEST JUNE 2 MUNICIPAL PARK! June, 2012
knowledge of what it might
be. This is a challenge that
rewards critical thinking
and the ability to think on
one’s feet.
“The second component
is called instant challenge,
and that is where they’re
brought into a room and
there’s a scenario they’re
given and they have to
problem-solve instantaneously.
They may have to
build the strongest bridge
out of 20 straws, 10 toothpicks
and five pieces of
tape, and they’ll have five
minutes to do it or something
like that,” said
Tucker.
Tucker, who is the team
manager and school coordinator
for the activity, was
quick to praise the students
themselves for their success.
“This is a totally studentdriven
activity,” said
Tucker.
According to Tucker,
there were four different
TMS teams at the start of the
year. Only one of the four
advanced to the state tournament.
The students spent
time both before and after
school practicing for the
competition and working on
their project.
“I’d set up 20-minute
activities in the morning,
and they’d come in before
school and talk about what
strategies to use and try to
come up with better strategies.
So that’s how we practiced,
to get them thinking
on their toes,” said Tucker.
The members of this
year’s state-winning team
include Emma Fell, Amy
Barber, Lydia Clarke, Iris
Garcia, Makayla Williams,
Sarah Jones, and Jarod
Davis.
The team qualified to
advance to the global
Destination Imagination
competition in
Knoxville, Tenn.
SOFTBALL TOURNEY A HIT
The City of Alabaster
hosted another successful
softball tournament this year
as the Alabama Community
College Conference crowned
its 2012 state champion at
Veterans Park on May 6,
2012.
The three-day fast-pitch
tournament kicked off with
a banquet on Thursday
night, followed by three
days of action-packed competition.
“The banquet was excellent.
All of our teams but
one or two were there,” said
Al Cox, the ACCC commissioner.
“The crowd has been
exceptional. The weather’s
perfect. The fields are great.
I just don’t know what I
would change.”
The tournament was
comprised of 12 teams from
the ACCC, including
Alabama Southern, Calhoun,
Central Alabama,
