CITY LEADERS...
Sophie Martin
Ward 1
Progress continues in Ward 1. Thank you to the Alabama Department of Transportation for working
with me and recently installing new Pedestrian signs along Hwy 31 between I-65 and Hwy 119. This
area is a safety concern for residents frequently crossing in this area. These signs will serve as a temporary solution until
further safety measures can be taken by the State.
Thank you to all the residents who attended the recent Simmsville Action Community meeting. We discussed
upcoming projects, projects in progress and new ideas to further enhance our community. These meetings continue to
be both extremely effective and informative.
The work on several abandoned and unsafe properties is moving forward. Several local volunteer groups, along
with the City, are helping with this major project. Because of legalities the process is gradual, but the results will make
a definite difference in our community.
Make plans for you and your family to attend the 10th annual Alabaster CityFest. Thank you to the Alabaster Arts
Council, the City of Alabaster and the hundreds of volunteers who make this event a major success. The event is free!
Visit www.alabastercityfest.com for more information.
Alabaster Angels has helped several families needing home repair, employment, and basic living necessities. If you
know any local families facing hardship, please contact me at martin@cityofalabaster.com.
Community Women in Motion is a new Alabaster outreach group and their membership is growing. They’re already
making a positive difference in many women’s lives. Programs are planned through July. For more information go to
www.communitywomeninmotion.org, or call Betty Lewis at 663-4286. Thank you for making a difference in our
community!
It is an honor to continue to serve the resident of Ward 1 and our City. Please contact me by phone or e-mail if you
have any questions.
Blessings,
CityFest 10 is just around the corner. June 2nd will be the big day this year, so be sure to mark your calendar for
that Saturday to "party on." Lone Star and Everclear are the headliners, and it sounds like it will be another great show. Thanks again to
all those who work so hard to bring us a good time.
With school being out for the summer, it is even more important to SLOW DOWN when driving. I am horrified by the speeds at
which some vehicles travel in our neighborhoods. One of my neighbors has been monitoring traffic and the results of his hard work
are amazing. People completely disregard speed limits, school zones, and other warnings of potential danger. When schools let out for
the summer, it becomes even more important to slow down and be alert as you drive through town. It could save a life.
Finally, it is time to get the family out to one of our parks for quality time in the sunshine and fresh air. The dog park should be open
by the middle of July, and it will provide a golden opportunity to bring the family out for exercise together. I am guilty of spending
way too much time inside and not getting the vitamins offered by direct sunlight, so we plan to hit the parks big time this summer. Join
us!!! Grace and peace, Bob
The Ward 3 council place is currently open. The vacancy will be
filled by appointment of the City Council for the remainder of the
current term. If you have any questions, call City Hall at 664-6800.
