What a great summer! Did you enjoy spicy BBQs, ice-cold drinks, and the numerous open-air festivals
as much as we did? We sure hope so! To keep the excitement going, we want so share our latest news
and releases with you!
The hot season kicked off with new albums by CANDLEMASS, AHAB, NACHTBLUT, VINTERSORG,
EREB ALTOR and many more. Metal veterans GRAVE DIGGER delivered their masterpiece »Clash of
the Gods», and hot newcomers like the Canadian metalheads STRIKER, the brutal thrash rampage
MORTILLERY, and the German thrash sensation DUST BOLT clearly showed that the next generation
of metal bands is more than eager to take the crown!
In August, the might of the Roman Empire was unleashed in the form of EX DEO’s new call to arms
»Caligvla», and THE GRAVIATORS and SVÖLK released their new albums filled with an endless supply
of great stoner and rock riffs! LEAVES’ EYES frontlady and vocalist supreme LIV KRISTINE presented
her myriad of fans with her beautiful solo album »Libertine».
September saw a perfect mix between psychedelic tunes (GLOWSUN & MY SLEEPING KARMA) and
the modern tunes of BEYOND ALL RECOGNITION’s “dubcore.” From this month on, our brand-new
sub-label SPINNING GOBLIN (http://www.facebook.com/spinninggoblin) became the home for our
psychedelic, stoner and rock bands (e.g. MY SLEEPING KARMA, SVÖLK, etc.)!
In October, the legendary gothic metal band TIAMAT will release their latest masterpiece, »The
Scarred People». PARAGON shares yet another offering of true heavy metal, whereas SKÁLMÖLD
breathes new life into ancient myths and legends. Austrian metalcore masters THE SORROW unleash
a storm of furious melodies on their new album, »Misery Escape». Last but not least, Napalm Records
will release THE SWORD’s fourth album, »Apocryphon», in Europe!
November will be the month for rock and black / pagan metal fans! FINSTERFORST will pay homage
to the Black Forest by playing epic hymns, whereas 9MM and MAMMOTH MAMMOTH will show that
the spirit of rock is more alive than ever!

LIV KRISTINE‘s career as a full-time composer and performing artist began in Norway in the mid-nineties, being the first angelic voice in the
Gothic Music revolutionary scene worldwide. The greatest inspiration for her compositions and lyrics has always been the supernatural,
dark romanticism and the beauty of nature and poetry. LIV KRISTINE‘s latest release »Libertine« is truly a milestone in her career; it sums
up her most important artistic experiences in her life-long creative journey. Her own lyrics and melodies are exceptional through her
enormous live and studio experience since her early youth. For the track ‘Vanilla Skin Delight‘, Liv recorded a duet with Platinum-Goldawarded
artist Tobias Regner, winner of “Deutschland sucht den Superstar“, the German version of Pop Idol. »Libertine« was produced by

PARAGON – Force of Destruction
For more than 20 years, the Heavy Metal institution has been example for how German steel has to be forged – no-holds-barred, heavy
and on maximum volume! The new album »Force of Destruction« stays true to the band’s creed and fires from all cylinders. Heavy riffs,
pounding drums, melodic hooklines and catchy refrains turn songs like ‘Iron Will‘ or ‘Bulletstorm‘ into anthems of the genre. In each and

If you think that bandleader Rock Rotten and his crew got rusty and lazy after numerous chart entries and well received gigs at Europe’s

their path of all-out, loud and dirty German Rock, filled with so much testosterone that an explosion is imminent. With an honest and
hungry attitude, 9MM rocks through all the songs in which authenticity and uncensored messages stand in the focus of attention. In the

with GLOWSUN’s drummer Fabrice Cornille.
He sounds a bit tired as the interview was
conducted during the band’s „Up in Smoke“
Tour.
“We are doing very well, and before we departed
for the tour, Napalm Records/Spinning Goblin rereleased
our debut album, »The Sundering«, on
colored vinyl. We are really proud of these editions!
Two colors are available through their online store,
while we were allowed to sell one color just on our
live dates. We decided to go for red as our personal
color.“ Speaking of »The Sundering«, the band has been
around since 1997, but there are not a lot of releases
available. Is there a special reason for this? “We do a
lot of concerts, and it takes a lot of time to prepare
for them, especially when you play abroad and
in different countries all over the map. It is very
difficult to refuse these offers and the good dates,
because this band is not our daily job. In addition, it
takes quite a while to come up and write new songs.
And once they are done, we work hard on them,
changing details and so on and so forth.“ That makes
sense, and leads us from the past to the present. Let’s talk
about the latest album, »Eternal Season«, which is really
hard to categorize. First of all, we need to ask Fabrice

about the group’s main influences. “Our music and
style is influenced by so many things and numerous
musical styles,“ responds Fabrice, “but what we three
in the band have all in common are bands like THE
HEADS, FU MANCHU, NEBULA and YAWNING MAN.
But apart from that, we listen to so many different
things. However, I think that is very important,
as it doesn’t close us off and keeps us free, so to
speak.“ What does the title »Eternal Season« mean? In
combination with the beautiful artwork, it seems like
the album concerns itself with nature or time? “Yes,
you are right,“ confirmes Fabrice and continues: “My
bandmember Johan Jaccob is not only a guitarist,
but also a well-known graphic designer. He draws
his inspiration from the realm of flora and fauna.
He really excels in this area, and you can find his
illustrations all over the world. It was really a must
that he illustrates the world of GLOWSUN, as his
style fits our music perfectly. I think that shows in
his artwork!“ Absolutely no argument there, especially
the vinyl edition, which showcases the fantastic
artwork in all its beauty. But let’s come back to the
title of the album. What does it mean? “The woman
on the artwork represents the last remains of our
civilization. After the extinction of the human race,
nature returns and takes back its rights.“ Is there a
specific reason why you hardly use any vocals on the
record? “The instrumentals are part of our sonic
universe; we like them a lot. We follow our instincts
and make music the way we feel, and we don’t care
about neither any obligations nor the outcome.“
What does the future hold for GLOWSUN? “A lot of gigs
and festival appearances. In addition, a tour in the
spring of 2013, as well as writing new songs.“

Welcome to the Napalm/Spinning Goblin family! How
do you feel, and what are your thoughts about your
new long-player »Soma«?
“We’re just feeling relaxed after nearly one year
working on the new songs and rebuilding our
studio as well as trying to figure out new recording
processes. All in all, we are happy with the result
and thankful for the chance of a worldwide release
via Napalm/Spinning Goblin.“
For those who are not familiar with your music, how
would you describe your style?
“We would describe MSK as hypnotic groove rock.
We started in 2005, more as a fun/jam project.
Before this time, we had another band, called THE
GREAT ESCAPE. The singer decided to leave the
band and moved to Denmark, so we played two
already-booked gigs with the new instrumental
project MSK. The audience was really enthusiastic
at these shows, so we decided to go on with MSK
without a singer.“
What’s the idea behind the artwork of »Soma«?
“Soma is the intoxicating drink of the gods which
connects the different levels of ‚Be-ing‘. The cover
shows the possible ingredients, which might be
used for the Soma drink in a surrealistic
landscape. Some art details can also
be seen as a kind of bridge, like our

sounds coming out of nature. In general, we like
the Soma idea as an album theme because it fits
MSK very well. Some people say that they are
having a kind of individual mind-trip by listening
to our music…just like with Soma.“
In autumn 2012, you will support MONSTER MAGNET.
Are there any further plans for playing live in near
future?
“First of all, we’d like to play good shows on the
MM tour. There are no specific plans for the time
after this tour, but there will be shows in 2013. We
have first requests for playing festivals, so let’s see
what happens in the next months.“
How do you prepare yourself for a show?
“Before a show we are trying to relax and focus on
the show. We have a kind of small ritual just before
entering the stage - we are staying together in a
circle, concentrating, wishing us good luck and
trying to get on the same ‚spiritual‘ level for the
show. We are always trying to feel the songs as
intensive as possible – and to share this feeling
with the audience.“
When you write music, is there any special process or
way to do it?
“When we started MSK, the main intention was to
create sounds/songs which could be used as a kind

of psychedelic, meditative trip. We just wanted
to feel the pure music – the beat, the melody etc.
We think that this is the good thing about music
without vocals - the song has no certain direction
which allows the listener to do with them what
he wants. In other words, instrumental music
leaves space and freedom for individuals. The
feeling during playing a song is still the most
relevant thing for MSK. According to this ‚rule,‘ our
songwriting always starts with a riff, coming from
our guitar player. We jam a little bit on it, and if
everybody feels good, we go on working with it.
If we cannot catch a kind of common feeling while
playing, we do not continue the idea. That’s the
main criteria; we all need to feel a kind of unifying
wave while playing the song.“
Lots of musicians play their instruments for years, once
they got the right feeling. Do you have a special bond
with your instruments?
“We think that the most important factor about
musical identity is the way you play. The instrument
is for sure also a factor, but not that strong. Our
guitar player, for example, shows a kind of special
technique to play, which is quite unique and has
a very big influence on the MSK sound. So, maybe
all is more person-related than instrument-related.
But speaking about the instruments, Matte and
Steffen, for example, have been playing the same
gear for years because they love the sound of their
instruments.“

Modern Metalcore made in Austria is what
THE SORROW stands for. Since 2005,
the band comprising of Andi, Dominik,
Mätze and Tobi has recorded three successful
albums. Their debut was given the “Album of
the Month“ honors by Metal Hammer Germany
in August 2007. THE SORROW supported bands
like CHIMAIRA and SEPULTURA and embarked
on their own headliner tours. In 2012, the time
has come for the fourth long-player »Misery
Escape«, which marks the first release under the
banner of Napalm Records. We met Tobi (bass) to
speak about the band and the new record.
What can we expect from »Misery Escape«?
“It is an album that combines the power of the
first two records and the catchiness of
our self-titled third long-player in a
very impressive way, at least in our
opinion,“ smiles Tobi. THE
SORROW developed
their distinctive band
trademarks like mixing
heavy riffs and anthemlike
refrains, and this is
exactly what we can
expect on »Misery
Escape«. However,
the band took further
steps, according to Tobi.
In fact, »Misery Escape«
is obviously the result of
professional decisions: “We
never had such a powerful
sound on a record before, so
you can expect that your head might be
blown off,“ laughs Tobi before he continues:
“Seriously, though, we took another step
ahead, improved the things we had to,
and left things we liked how they were,
and thus, we’re really happy with it.“ This
sounds great. The band’s device for the third
recording was “anything that doesn’t sound
dramatic won’t get on this album.“ It seems that
it was the band’s device for »Misery
Escape« more than ever.
»Misery Escape« was
recorded in
S k y
van Hoff’s Barracks Studios in Ratingen, near
Dusseldorf. So, you’ve changed studio and producer
for the first time. How was the atmosphere in the
studio? “The atmosphere was relaxed at some
points, less relaxed at other points. But that’s how
it is in a studio - pressure`s getting high from time
to time.“ That’s for sure. In fact, we can often hear
stories about problems and fights in the studio, and
THE SORROW faced some challenges this time. Tobi
explains: “We caught a fever and started to work on
the songs over and over again.“ Besides the creative
parts, the guys had to deal with health problems, as
well. “Mätze, our singer, had an infection of his
vocal chords, and everything
had to be put on hold
again.“ So this is
why Tobi
summarizes
the recording period as a far too long.
But this is the way it is: unexpected things will happen,
even to professional bands like THE SORROW.
But let’s focus again on the new record. On the cover
of »Misery Escape«, we can see ancient keys and a
mystical keyhole. Tobi, can you give us an idea of
what it is about? Is there any special story behind it?
“There’s not really a story behind; it’s just the thing
that everyone can choose to be in misery or not,“
says Tobi before continuing: “No doubt, bad things
happen to most of us in our lives, but it’s up to
every single person if he accepts the bad stuff and
goes down with it or fights and might be able
to rise and gain new strength.“ From this point of
view, the idea behind the artwork unfolds beautifully.
“The keys represent the option to choose; the
keyhole stands for the fact that you never know
what to expect.“ What a great metaphor for life!
And it seems that there are some parallels between
the story and the recording time in the studio, but
THE SORROW chose truly a powerful way out of the
annoyance. Now we know much about the new
record, but who are the guys behind THE SORROW?
Let’s have a look inside the band and behind the
scenes. As we already have heard, Mätze is the singer,
and he also plays guitar. Andi plays guitar, as well, and
Tobi plays bass while Dominik takes care of the drums.
Tobi, who is responsible for the songwriting? “The
songs are mainly written by our guitar players,
Andi and Mätze.“ But for »Misery Escape«, things
are bit different, as Tobi explains. “Most of the music
on the new record was written by Andi.“ The new
studio and its surroundings and producer brought
obviously fresh air to the band, as well: “Our producer
Sky had an interesting and important influence
on our songwriting.“ So for the songwriting itself,
what’s the inspiration? What inspires THE SORROW to
write lyrics and songs? “Inspiration for the lyrics is
mainly life itself - for the music, as well - but the
biggest inspiration when it comes to music is
music again, all kinds of.“ We touched upon it in
the introduction: THE SORROW are an Austrian
band; their home is a part of Austria called
Vorarlberg. In this area, they live in cities like
Dornbirn or Bregenz. Tobi reveals
that he lives in a small village in
the countryside, “really close
to rivers, mountains.“ This
close proximity to nature has
impact on their life besides the
band: “We don’t really have
a big city around here;
if you live in Dornbirn,
you’re in the mountains
within 20 minutes.
That’s cool... I enjoy
being in the mountains,
trekking, climbing and stuff,
and so does our drummer
Dominik, as well.“ So everybody
has still some time for hobbies as long as
the band is not in the studio or on tour, right? “It
depends. Mätze plays ice hockey and works
out, but Andi is busy with the band 24/7,
hahaha...“ THE SORROW are obviously sportive
Austrian guys - respect! That’s something that you
can notice when you see them live onstage.
For Napalm, it is a big pleasure to have an Austrian
band on its roster. What does THE SORROW thinks
about being on Napalm? “There are some bands
we’ve already known since ages, MONSTER
MAGNET or KARMA TO BURN for example.“ So,
have you guys already checked out your Napalm /
Spinning Goblin colleagues? “Bands we really like
are HATESPHERE or HUNTRESS. We already played
a European tour with DEVILDRIVER in 2007 and
GRAVE DIGGER´s Manny Schmidt played a guitar
solo on our debut album. So I think that we’re in a
good company!“ Maybe there’s a new collaboration
up on the horizon, who knows? What are your dreams
and visions? Tobi responds: “Hopefully, a lot of soldout
shows all over the world.“ Before we talk too
much about dreams, are there any more concrete
plans for THE SORROW? “We’ll hit the stages in
Germany, Switzerland, and of course Austria to
promote our new album and to get your heads
bangin´...“ Sounds great, and it seems that no one
should miss THE SORROW’s upcoming gigs. Tobi, do
you have any last words for our readers?
“Horns up...“

TIAMAT are without a doubt legends in the Gothic Metal genre. With classic albums
like »Wildhoney«, they transcended borders and made their way to the Metal
Olympus. »The Scarred People« marks the 10th studio effort in the band’s history,
which has its beginnings in the early ‘90s. We talked to mastermind and frontman
Johan Edlund and spoke about the new recording, playing live, and life in general.
“A gob-smacking new, good-sounding album with
lots of different atmosphere,“ is what we can expect
from the new album, and Johan explains that it will be
“more true than ever to the TIAMAT sound.“ Indeed,
the songs combine elements from the legendary first
albums and the latest long-players, and offer brilliant
dark Gothic Metal full of emotion and melody.
The new tracks were mainly recorded in the Woodhouse
Studios in Germany with producer Siggi Bemm, “with
additional recordings being done in my studio in
Greece and in Roger‘s studio in Sweden,“ reveals
Johan. The Woodhouse Studios have a special place
in the history of TIAMAT (for example, the classic
»Wildhoney« was recorded in the legendary studio in
Hagen/Germany).
“It took some time, don‘t know how long…“
responds Edlund, asked for the period of creating the
new album. He estimates that it took about a year:
a period that comprises of songwriting, demoing,
rehearsing, preparing, and recording. The work ethic in
the studio was made of discipline and focus and “active
9-5 days, weekends off, five weeks holiday.“ But the
creative process behind an album is quite different
and not as structured as the recordings: “First, you
live the album for a few years, and when you feel
that you‘ve lived it enough, you write it down and
record it.“ After feeling and living the new ideas of an
album, which could be very intense, the process in the
studio seems to be a more straight-ahead working flow:
“We just do it. It‘s not brain surgery. No masterplan
behind it; it‘s easy.“ If there was a kind of a masterplan
behind recording »The Scarred People«, it would
obviously be the idea of enjoying the work: “I just
felt for concentrating on the fun part, the creative
process with good friends.“
But what about the creative
process itself - is it
possible
to search for inspiration? “No, it doesn‘t work. It
happens when it happens, and when it doesn‘t,
I go do something else. Life goes on, planets still
orbiting the sun,“ explains Johan. It seems he has kind
of a merciless as well as consequent opinion about his
artistic work: “If I never ever again find inspiration to
write a new song, then so be it.“ Hopefully, this point
in time will be far away in future.
As I read song titles of the new album, like ‘Winter Dawn‘
or ‘Radiant Star,‘ I become curious about the lyrics itself.
Johan offered straightforward and personal lyrics with
TIAMAT releases in the past. He shares his opinion about
lyrics in general: “Lyrics are as important as anything
else when writing and recording an album.“ But
what about the personal note of his lyrics? “I tend to
stay away from fiction. I have nothing against it -
some bands do that in a very clever way - but it‘s
just not the right way for TIAMAT. I often write very
abstractly, and I like to mix that with more down-toearth
expressions, to fit with how we think when we
write the music.“ So, lyrics get an important part in the
complex interplay of music and words. In talking about
the lyrics of »The Scarred People«, Johan admits that the
political situation in Europe and especially Greece had
some impact: “It has finally come to a point where it‘s
no longer possible to leave these events out of the
music and lyrics.“ Songs like ‘Love Terrorists‘ or ‘Radiant
Star‘ concern itself with this topic. The answer pours out
of Johan and he explains that the Greek are portrayed by
the European media in an unfair way, making them look
rather spoiled and lazy. This is quite the opposite of what
he experiences in Greece and that people are struggling
to make it through the day. However, being a musician
and not a politician he confesses that this is “a complex
situation“ and that he doesn’t “have a solution to
that.“ After offering this political statement, he clarifies
that he can’t explain the lyrics of »The Scarred People«
in just a few sentences and that there
is no red thread running through
this album. “I don‘t want
to, either. I don‘t
want to

steal from the experience of the listener. All I can say
is that it‘s not a concept album.“
Once the new album has been released, playing live
will become an important part. The live experience is
something entirely different than the studio versions
as we can see by Johan’s answer. “I never think of
performing a song live when writing the song,
because we solve that later. Furthermore, I don‘t
think it‘s that important to play the song exactly
as it is on the album. They might get a bit more
rocking, but that‘s okay with me,“ explains Edlund.
Any thoughts on the setlist? There are so many great
songs in the TIAMAT catalogue. “We do our best to
keep ourselves interested by adding songs we
haven‘t ever played before and to keep up with
what our audience wants to hear. It‘s always very
cool to play a song that the audience wants...
They‘re making the show, together with us. If we
can find that symbiosis, we‘re very happy.“
For the last part of our conversation, we return to the
unique sound of TIAMAT, which often offers musical
references to dark ‘80s music – for example, THE SISTERS
OF MERCY. “Yes, the SISTERS are absolutely great!“
But this doesn’t mean that Johan listens to this stuff
nowadays, as well. Quite the contrary, he adds that
“silence is top thousand“. Since moving to Greece, the
beach has become a very important place for listening
to music, as songs are played at the numerous beach
bars. “Lots of Bryan Adams, Dire Straits, Chris Rea,
Toto, Laidback…along with the latest beach flavor.“
Asked if he can recommend an album to a complete
metal newbie, which one would Johan choose? “Our
new one.“ Fair enough, and if you could recommend
two more? “Our last two ones.“
What’s the daily life of Johan Edlund in Greece? “I‘m either
on a sunny beach sipping margaritas, or at home
painting or creating abstract sculptures from junk.“
But more important is his wife: “She‘s next to me almost
24 hours.“ That sounds pretty cool: margaritas, the arts,
and a lovely wife. Are there any last words to your fans?
“Bare with us, brave soldiers.“

Simon, welcome to the pages of our flyer! Can you explain
the story behind the name FINSTERFORST? “Thank
you very much! We are very glad to be a part of the
Napalm line-up! Our band name FINSTERFORST is
a synonym for our home region – the Black Forest
(Southwest Germany). The band is very devoted to
our origin and roots, and we can wholeheartedly
express the connection to our homeland.“
How would you describe your music to a fan who has
never heard of you before? “Actually, it is not very easy
to put all FINSTERFORST releases in the same genre.
It is obvious that we created different music in the
beginning. The music developed into something
more mature and deeper - heavy guitar and bass
riffs, brutal drums, furious and aggressive vocals,
epic and mighty choirs, and hovering atmospheric
keyboard walls…On top of that, our accordion
sound combined with acoustic guitars delivers the
typical color of FINSTERFORST’s music. These epic
tunes contain all kinds of emotions and perfectly
represent the mystical and breathtaking spirit of our
homeland.“
Let’s talk about your latest recording »Rastlos«! “I think this
album is by far the most mature and grown-up work
we have ever created. The complex compositions
are perfectly presented by the powerful, massive,
and transparent production. We always want the
music to have the right sound. Therefore, we put
enormous effort into the recording and production
process without wasting even one single thought
about compromising anything that could have some
sound-harming result.“

Hymns from the Black Forest
Germany’s FINSTERFORST is one of the latest additions to the ever-growing Napalm
family! We talked to Simon (guitar) about the band and the new album »Rastlos«.
What are the lyrics of »Rastlos« about? “All the lyrics
of »Rastlos« have the same topic, as the album is
designed as a concept album. Since the music is very
emotional and transports dynamic and atmospheric
ups and downs, the lyrics do so, too. The main
protagonist of the story lost everything and was
forced to leave his homeland. It is not hard to imagine
what kind of emotions and feelings you have in such
a situation - hate, love, longing for the past, hope for
a better future, rage, and desire for revenge.“
Please tell us something about the recording process!
“As usual, we recorded this album at the Iguana
Studios, which are located in nearby Freiburg in
Southwest Germany. The recording sessions took us
around six weeks, while later on, the mixing process
with some additional programming had to be done.
The atmosphere in the studio is always brilliant. Our
producer and sound engineer ‚Almighty Christoph
Brandes‘ has become a great friend of mine, and
thanks to his relaxed and very disciplined working
method, we always reach perfect results. And with
the help of a massive consumption of pork knuckles,
I don’t have to tell you that we really feel comfortable
in the mighty halls of the Iguana Studios!“
Besides your individual band sound with an accordion,
you used other special instruments in the past. Can we
expect again interesting sounds on »Rastlos«?
“Yes! This time, I wanted to work with some
orchestral elements and experimented with different
synth/keyboard sounds. As usual, Sevan Kirder
(RED SHAMROCK, ex-ELUVEITIE) delivered some
marvelous flute lines which are totally mindblowing!“

The Wolves
are coming!
Viking metal band VARG can
look back on glorious years
since the release of »Blutaar«
and with their last album
»Wolfskult«, which was released
in March 2011, they hit the
official German album charts (# 33) for the very first
time. VARG move forward with huge and mighty
steps and they´ll crown themselves with the release
of their new album »Guten Tag«. With this record,
VARG go way beyond any boundaries of pagan,
death, black and folk metal, even German Rock and
„Neue Deutsche Härte“ influences are nothing the
band are afraid of. We have talked to VARG vocalist
Freki about their music and the new album.
Freki, tell us about your new album »Guten Tag«. How would you introduce
it and what`s the difference to the previous albums? “»Guten Tag« is like
waking up with a fist in your face. It´s a very diversified album, on
which we granted a little more space for elements taken from several
subgenres like hardrock, powermetal, death, thrash, etc. but in the end
it´s still 100 % VARG. When you listen to »Guten Tag« after having heard
our last record »Wolfskult«before, you will see that it´s not a real new era,
it´s just more or less just the next logical step for us, leaving more and
more boundaries behind. To label VARG as a pure pagan-band fitted only
for our debut. So many bands just recopy their style again and again on
every record, knowing that it´s the safe and good-selling way. I think we
managed it quite well to do that step forward, not fearing development
without betraying our roots.“ “Guten Tag” means “hello” in German. Why did
you choose this title? “On one hand it means only „hello“, but on the other
hand it means: „Wake up fucker, stop drowning in self-pity, stand up and
fight“. Whole life is a struggle and if you want to achieve something,
you have to fight for it. That’s the main statement and that’s why we
chose this title. Of course we knew that it would be confusing people,
just because it´s simplicity and it forces you to make your own theory.
Actually it worked much better than we ever could have expected.“ Freki,
your lyrics are mostly in German. Is it important to you to express in your own
language? Don’t you fear the international audience won’t understand what
you have to say? “Of course we are proud of all our records. Any of it is
something like a manifest of what VARG stood for at that time. And no,
we don´t fear international audience, quite the contrary! I think it´s
not a unique feature anymore, just look how big RAMMSTEIN have
become – the typical sound of german language just fits perfect with
metal in my opinion. The pagan-scene still seems to be a vital scene,
with outstanding bands, and most of them use their mother tongue
as a brand label. Could you imagine ARKONA with English lyrics? Or
FINNTROLL with German Lyrics? Or NEGURA BUNGET in Finnish? It´s
just the most natural way for us to express ourselves, to create a unity
of sound and words. But that doesn’t mean that we force ourselves to
write only german lyrics - on the new record you can find our first song
with English lyrics, with an amazing guest vocal feature of Jonne from
KORPIKLAANI, which makes the song even more outstanding then it
is already from its musical direction. We are really curious to see how
it will be accepted by our fans – but
in the end we always did what we
wanted to do and so it will be in the
future, maybe the next record is
in Chinese, you never know.“
Chart-storming wolves are out for
blood and serve their fans a record,
that couldn´t be more diverse. If there´s
a band in this usually oh-so-funny genre,
who´s got the balls to raise the middlefinger
high in the air, it´s VARG! The band are gonna
play the HEIDENFEST tour with WINTERSUN and
KORPIKLAANI this October/November. Watch out

ban. They‘re usually
thought-provoking.
They‘re typically
dangerous. They‘re
often revolutionary.
It might seem impossible to keep
anything private in the modern age of
Facebook and Twitter where everyone‘s
dirty laundry is up for a comment.
Nevertheless, the most impactful art
remains the most mysterious.
»Apocryphon«, which literally translates
to „secret writing“, is the perfect
moniker for THE SWORD‘s fourth fulllength
album and first for Razor & Tie*.
Wrapping poetic and poignant imagery
in a haze of crushing riffs and ethereal
melodies, the Austin, TX quartet delivers
haunting, hypnotic, and heavy rock. The
group—John D. Cronise [Vocals, Guitar],
Kyle Shutt [Guitar], Bryan Richie [Bass],
and Santiago “Jimmy” Vela III [Drums]—
is about to let the world in on a little
secret…
Coming off 2010‘s acclaimed concept
album »Warp Riders«, THE SWORD
approached their latest offering from a
new perspective. Instead of recording in
Austin, they holed up in Baltimore with
producer J. Robbins [Clutch, Jawbox] for
five weeks to craft »Apocryphon« in the
summer of 2012.
“It felt like a fresh start,“ affirms
Shutt. „We always made our
records in Austin. This is the first
time we left the city to
live somewhere and
make music. It was
good to shake things
up. Jimmy had just
joined the band.
We had new
management,
and we had just
signed to Razor & Tie.
There was a strange energy
in Baltimore, and it fit with
our attitude.“
Cronise elaborates, “The music is also
lyrically different. There‘s not as much
storytelling as on previous albums. There
are songs about real life subjects. Warp
Riders was a big undertaking. I wrote a sci-fi
story, and we made a record about it. This
was more stream-of-consciousness. In a way, I
realized music as a vehicle for expressing my
own views and thoughts. I shied away from
that before in favor of entertaining people
with colorful narratives. This is where I‘m
at.“
Cronise actually turned to various texts while
Forbidden Tomes of Wisdom
penning lyrics this time around. With an eerie synth,
captivating refrain, and pummeling guitars, the title
track references his deep and calculated research.
“The word ‚Apocryphon‘ came up while I was
researching Gnosticism, early Christianity,
theosophy, and other esoteric subjects,“ he goes on.
“They‘re books that were either banned or removed
from the biblical canon. The early church fathers felt
that these teachings were either too advanced or
dangerous for the masses to be exposed to because
they encouraged thought that was antithetical
to the church’s system of control, so they were
considered heretical and dubbed apocrypha.
You‘ve got to look beyond what you‘re told to the
totality of knowledge available to approach any
sort of true understanding.“
At the same time, he‘d also immersed himself in a
healthy dose of science fiction such as Phillip K. Dick‘s
VALIS and the work of Michael Moorcock. One song
‘Dying Earth‘ nods directly to Jack Vance‘s science fiction
series of the same name with an apocalyptic buildup
and distorted crash. Meanwhile, the first single ‘Veil of
Isis‘ careens from a propulsive beat and kinetic riff into
an impressive groove. It illuminates another side of
»Apocryphon«.
“That‘s one of the more metaphysical tracks
on the record,“ continues Cronise. “Some of it
is about Isis and the concept of the mother
deity. It gets into Egyptian cosmology and talks
about cycles of nature, which is a theme that
recurs in various places throughout the album.“
“It‘s the next logical step for THE SWORD,“ adds
Shutt. “It‘s got a big-ass riff and chorus. There‘s a
solid and memorable groove.“
Sonically, Robbins encouraged THE SWORD to tap into
something raw. As a result, the album echoes with
insurmountable intensity. “We loved what he did
with Clutch, and they highly recommended him,“
recalls Shutt. “He really helped us capture the dirty,
grittiness in the songs. It was there, but he knew
what we wanted, what we were going for, and how
to communicate it.“
That vision even comes across in the ornate cover
art by famed artist and writer J.H. Williams III. Cronise
sought out the Eisner and Harvey-award winning artist
behind Promethia, Batwoman, and Detective Comics for
artwork, and Williams excitedly obliged.
“I really wanted him for the cover,“ smiles Cronise.
“I‘ve been a fan for a long time, and what he came
up with is mind-blowing. It‘s more intricate and
involved than our previous album artwork. There‘s
so much to it. It gives the people who buy the CD,
LP, or cassette—yes, I said cassette—a beautiful
artifact to look at.“
THE SWORD consistently give their audience a fully
realized experience, though. They began turning heads
with Age of Winters in 2006 and its 2008 follow-up God
of the Earth. Metallica hand-picked them for a worldwide
tour, and they‘ve shared the stage with everyone from
MOTORHEAD to OzzY OSBOURNE. Their music has
been prominently utilized in films such as Jennifer‘s Body
and Jonas Åkerlund’s Horsemen as well as the bestselling
video game Guitar Hero: METALLICA.
Meanwhile, in 2010, Warp Riders reached #42
on the Billboard Top 200. They‘ve also received
widespread critical acclaim from the likes of
Rolling Stone, Outburn, The Washington Post,
and more. 2012 saw them ink
their deal with Razor & Tie*, and
a whole new chapter has begun.
Ultimately, THE SWORD will
continue to reveal what
other artists won‘t. “To some
degree, it‘s always been about
escapism,“ concludes Cronise. “Music
is supposed to transport people
somewhere away from their
daily lives. For »Apocryphon«, the
idea was to do that in a more
introspective and philosophical manner. I‘d like
it if listeners think a little bit more about life, their
existence, and their place in the universe while
taking this trip.“
That‘s one secret truly worth sharing.

GLOWSUN
Hailing from Lille in the North of France, the GLOWSUN story
starts in 1997 with the first edition‘ of the band featuring
Johan Jaccob (not only Glowsun‘s guitarist & vocalist, but
also a very talented poster designer). Musicians come and
go until Fabrice Cornille (drums) and Ronan Chiron (bass),
both ex-Attack Of The Mutant Camels, joined in.. In 2005 the
first EP „Lost Love“ was recorded and released. GLOWSUN
plays a very heavy, riff and groove-laden Psychedelic Stoner
Rock with a slight Space Rock feel here and there.

Blues, grooves and a bottle of booze!!
Inspired by heavy blues-legends, this hard hitting
band from Oslo, Norway is producing classic Hard
Rock, Stoner Rock with a lot of...blues. Mix it up
with 2 spoonfuls of doom and psychedelia and you
got Lonely LONELY KAMEL. With the third album
release „Dust Devil“ the Kamels have become a
household name not just in stoner rock insighter circles but literally throughout the
Rock and Metal world. The band spend all of 2012 on tour promoting the new new
album and are now back in the recording studio to work on new masterpieces!
MONKEY3
MONKEY3 started in 2001 in Lausanne (Switzerland)
as a jam-band community, influenced by a
Psychedelic and Stoner Rock vibe that reminds
Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Led zeppelin or 35007.
With their debut album „Monkey3“, the band got
great reactions and reviews all over Europe, putting
them on the map of the Stoner Rock scene. The
2nd album „39Laps“ was released in 2007 and features a highly acclaimed cover of a
movie classic, „Once Upon A Time In The West“ by master Ennio Morricone. The same
year, the band played the famous Roadburn Festival in Holland and did an European
tour.In 2013 MONKEY3 will hit the studio to record their debut album for Spinning

SVÖLK
SVÖLK punches hard without gloves and with
a match weight of about 400 kg. For the last
5 years they have established themselves on
the Norwegian rock scene, and it‘s spreading
throughout the world. Early in 2005 the band
released its first EP „Beast Unleashed“, engineered
by Don Dons from WE. SVÖLK released history‘s
first Bear metal album - mastercraft hard-rock from the deep forests of eastern
Norway. This recording has received standing ovations all over the world. As original
as the band sounds, it still pays a great homage to traditional eighties metal masters
mixed with good, old stoner. This results in a signature sound of its own: Strong, rich,
compelling and with a creative and intelligent twist.
THE GRAVIATORS
THE GRAVIATORS were formed deep in the woods
of southern Sweden in 2009, with a vision to write
and record music inspired by the sounds of the
great rock `n` roll groups of the 70‘s. With a mix of
heavy, yet melodic riffs, that will take you on a trip
back in time, when bands like BLACK SABBATH and
PENTAGRAM took heavy rock to new heights.
In 2010 THE GRAVIATORS had the great honor of supporting the American doom

With „V“, Karma to Burn releases the follow-up to their highly acclaimed
comeback album „Appalachian Incantation“. The trio from West Virginia
remain extremely reliable in delivering first-class stoner rock. „V“ celebrates
monumental riffs and spirited performances, as the band successfully
manages to create a hypnotic sound cosmos with purely instrumental
tracks that pay homage to the godly powers of the groove. With „Jimmy D“, „The Cynics“, and the
Black Sabbath cover song „Never Say Die“, Karma to Burn lets go of their long-held instrumental

Karma To Burn´s first full length record after the bands reunion in 2009!
Heavy riffs and catchy grooves are still the main ingredients of the
unique Karma to Burn sound that creates an atmosphere capable of
projecting the band‘s high energy live shows. With the intensity of an
American 18-wheeler, the band roars through their material, leaving fans
of the mighty riff no other choice than to join the party. The songs were
produced by legendary Kyuss bass player Scott Reeder. The limited edition includes a special

Lonely Kamel‘s musical debut is already considered a milestone of the
Scandinavian stoner rock underground and is finally available worldwide!
The self-titled release from the Norwegian quartet is a smoky mix of stoner
rock and blues with a proper pinch of psychedelic influence that gives
the overall sound a very special touch. Despite the mélange of varied
ingredients, guitars and appealing groves still take center stage on this production. Songs such
as „Damn You‘re Hot“,“Don‘t Piss on the Lizzard“ or „Spacerider“ are impressive examples of Lonely
Kamel‘s intoxicating sound cosmos, in which Thomas Brenna‘s characteristic vocals relate stories
of beautiful women, freedom, adventure, and party excesses.
Dust Devil:
Lonely Kamel‘s third album proves once again that it is absolutely not
necessary to be surrounded by desert sands and cacti in order to produce
genuine stoner rock. The four Norwegians are living proof of this fact, and
don‘t stop there. With the release of „Dust Devil“, they unquestionably
provide the genre with a refreshing brand of unrelenting and passionate
dedication. The opening two tracks, „Grim Reefer“ and „Evil Mann“, reveal
the road on which Lonely Kamel will travel. It offers much more than typical stoner riffs and
captivating rhythms, adding sing-along choruses and hypnotic melodies to its winding course.
