MY SLEEPING KARMA is back after two years. The band’s new
recording »Soma« is the first release on Napalm Records/Spinning
Goblin – time to sit down with MSK.
Welcome to the Napalm/Spinning Goblin family! How
do you feel, and what are your thoughts about your
new long-player »Soma«?
“We’re just feeling relaxed after nearly one year
working on the new songs and rebuilding our
studio as well as trying to figure out new recording
processes. All in all, we are happy with the result
and thankful for the chance of a worldwide release
via Napalm/Spinning Goblin.“
For those who are not familiar with your music, how
would you describe your style?
“We would describe MSK as hypnotic groove rock.
We started in 2005, more as a fun/jam project.
Before this time, we had another band, called THE
GREAT ESCAPE. The singer decided to leave the
band and moved to Denmark, so we played two
already-booked gigs with the new instrumental
project MSK. The audience was really enthusiastic
at these shows, so we decided to go on with MSK
without a singer.“
What’s the idea behind the artwork of »Soma«?
“Soma is the intoxicating drink of the gods which
connects the different levels of ‚Be-ing‘. The cover
shows the possible ingredients, which might be
used for the Soma drink in a surrealistic
landscape. Some art details can also
be seen as a kind of bridge, like our

sounds coming out of nature. In general, we like
the Soma idea as an album theme because it fits
MSK very well. Some people say that they are
having a kind of individual mind-trip by listening
to our music…just like with Soma.“
In autumn 2012, you will support MONSTER MAGNET.
Are there any further plans for playing live in near
future?
“First of all, we’d like to play good shows on the
MM tour. There are no specific plans for the time
after this tour, but there will be shows in 2013. We
have first requests for playing festivals, so let’s see
what happens in the next months.“
How do you prepare yourself for a show?
“Before a show we are trying to relax and focus on
the show. We have a kind of small ritual just before
entering the stage - we are staying together in a
circle, concentrating, wishing us good luck and
trying to get on the same ‚spiritual‘ level for the
show. We are always trying to feel the songs as
intensive as possible – and to share this feeling
with the audience.“
When you write music, is there any special process or
way to do it?
“When we started MSK, the main intention was to
create sounds/songs which could be used as a kind

of psychedelic, meditative trip. We just wanted
to feel the pure music – the beat, the melody etc.
We think that this is the good thing about music
without vocals - the song has no certain direction
which allows the listener to do with them what
he wants. In other words, instrumental music
leaves space and freedom for individuals. The
feeling during playing a song is still the most
relevant thing for MSK. According to this ‚rule,‘ our
songwriting always starts with a riff, coming from
our guitar player. We jam a little bit on it, and if
everybody feels good, we go on working with it.
If we cannot catch a kind of common feeling while
playing, we do not continue the idea. That’s the
main criteria; we all need to feel a kind of unifying
wave while playing the song.“
Lots of musicians play their instruments for years, once
they got the right feeling. Do you have a special bond
with your instruments?
“We think that the most important factor about
musical identity is the way you play. The instrument
is for sure also a factor, but not that strong. Our
guitar player, for example, shows a kind of special
technique to play, which is quite unique and has
a very big influence on the MSK sound. So, maybe
all is more person-related than instrument-related.
But speaking about the instruments, Matte and
Steffen, for example, have been playing the same
gear for years because they love the sound of their
instruments.“
